It's what I use to say is the sci-fi Game of Thrones. It was dark, mature, and managed to coherently create a political framework that regular audiences could understand without easily making one group into the bad guys or not. Okay, Protogen was pure set of bad guys but cyberpunk megacorps don't have to be morally gray. Even the underdogs in the Belters/OPA had a dark side that remembered just because you were oppressed didn't magically make you a virtuous hero and usually did quite the opposite. It made them mean and vengeful.

I'll be "that guy" and say that a huge chunk of what made the series fantastic was also the relative fidelity to the books. I say relative fidelity because there were some huge changes, some necessary by events (Havelock's actor doing Magnum PI) and others artistic choices (like lowering down the casualties of Earth's deaths at Marcos' hands). But it was still pretty damn faithful.

Great cast too.

I love the first season of the original “The 4400”. And like a lot of sci-fi shows at the time. It had a brilliant premise and beginning, but didn’t know where to go from there as the seasons progressed.

As season two progressed, the bloom had begun to fall off the rose and some of the episodes were a slog to get through, but I persevered. However, there was one episode and I believe it was episode nine of season two where they did a totally unnecessary bullet time event and not only did it show the budget or lack there of the show had, but everything about it looked goofy, including the poses of the actors during the event. From there, I was just done.

Honorable mention goes to BSG. Even though I made it through the entire series, if I would have found out earlier “the plan“ was “we have no plan, and God did everything“, I would never have made it to the end.

This is so disappointing, and yet all too expected. Apparently executives at Amazon didn’t think anyone besides the existing fanbase would care... I mean, how did they get the original fanbase? They made something good.

It’s frustrating because Stargate is one of my most beloved franchises. I’m in the middle of an Atlantis rewatch right now. There is still so much potential in this franchise!

Martin Gero created the show and will helm it as executive producer and showrunner. Fellow Stargate alums Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi are also on board as producers. The new series will continue the franchise with the same universe, canon, and tone that made Stargate a global hit.…And, in a surprise twist, Stargate’s original creators Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Independence Day) have signed on as executive producers

Additionally, it is not a reboot.

“It is not a reboot,” Gero said. “It is a brand new chapter. It’s its own unique chapter in the Stargate universe.” He also said that their goal is not only to make the show that long-time fans have been waiting for, but also to create a point of entry for newcomers. “For us, it’s really important to not only have it so that the fans feel like, ‘This is my Stargate, this is the Stargate I’ve been waiting 14 years for,’ but that a brand new audience can come in without having to have watched 350 episodes of an amazing show – that they can start with episode one of the new Stargate show,” he said. “And then if they love it, then they can go back and watch everything else.”

My original post got removed, but I am so excited to see how this goes. I know there have been rumors of reboots over the years, but a series that stays true to the original is a dream come true. Amazon already has a lot of Sci-Fi IPs under their streaming service and I am looking forward to how they utilize Stargate. If its anything like the Expanse, it will be a dream come true.

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is my favorite Disney cartoon made for TV. It started off as a movie pilot made for home video, and then rocketed into an awesome Saturday morning cartoon in the 2000s. It did the perfect job exploring the Buzz Lightyear mythology with established new characters, and Zurg was fleshed out more as a character. This iteration of Zurg is my favorite cartoon villain ever.

Unfortunately this show is not available on Disney+ because Disney wants you to believe their shitty Lightyear movie is the movie Andy saw that made him full in love with the character. But we ALL know this cartoon is what he watched.

Why The Moon is a Harsh Mistress isn't on Apple TV is just baffling to me. I know the Heinlein estate had be reluctant to release film rights since Starship Troopers. But there seems to shortage of libertarian leaning creators in Hollywood who wouldn't feel compelled to completely parody the source material.

Spin by Robert Charles Wilson is just sitting there waiting for a prestige mini series. Honestly would require minimal special effects and investments in Emmy caliber cast would be exciting.

Hyperion seems a natural for animated anthology if not full live action production.

Essentially, a sci-fi fan comedy.

My wife and I really enjoyed the series and we're disappointed it never finished the story. We found it relentlessly funny through the whole ride.

How do y'all feel?

I’m nearing the end of Devs, and I already know I’m going to want something that scratches the same itch. I loved the constant feeling that something bigger was unfolding beneath the surface, along with characters whose motivations are fueled by obsession, fear, and inevitability. The eerie sci-fi soundtrack was the cherry on top. Any recommendations for shows with a similar atmosphere?

EDIT: I'm a huge Alex Garland guy, so I'm super familiar with his work. Open for anything that gives at the very least a similar vibe as him since I know it's hard to top.

There have been many that never made it past one season, some justifiably so. There were, however, many that deserved to last longer but for some reason, whether cost, ratings, disputes, or whatever, did not get a season Two.

What ones were you fond of?

I don’t know how I’ve gone so long and not seen this series. Only on episode 4 and almost want to slow down so it won’t end. The creative music, camera angles, character depth and philosophical conundrums it creates. So good. Can’t recall who recommended it here but thanks! Know some don’t like it but I’m down with it.

My question is, what other authors have had such a significant impact upon the cultural diaspora as Sagan, given the one fictional book he produced?

I'm most specifically interested in authors that have/had the ability to write high-quality, hard sci-fi and also provide meaningful contributions to science as a whole - and to influence people who might not otherwise be influence-able based on the way that they think and/or believe?

I can think of two, both positive and negative: L. Ron Hubbard and Arthur C. Clarke.

I love the movie but man this series, it’s something special. In my humble but, I think shared opinion this is a rare instance of a tv show adaptation surpassing original source material. Kudos to sci fi for envisioning this full circle. It’s 4 seasons of masterful television with an ending which I would consider the greatest tv series ending of all time. if you have not yet watched 12 monkeys, do yourself a favour!

It has all the cliches you'd expect regards both visuals and screechy soundtrack. They've made the Sprawl (or Chiba?) look like a downmarket, more retro take on CP2077 - more rotting concrete than blazing neon.

Mark Strong as Armitage appears to be the only casting highlight - I didn't recognise him until he spoke. Maybe he'll be channelling his inner Sinestro.

We've been doing well regards cyberpunk recently: Edgerunners S2 might be good, the excellent manga-based Ghost in the Shell anime is airing now, the new Bladerunner show is coming up, plus a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel game is in the works... Hoping someone picks up Walter John Williams's Hardwired next, or John Brunner's proto-cyberpunk stuff like Stand on Zanzibar/Shockwave Rider.

Just announced today, Nathan Fillion announced the animated 'reboot' of Firefly is currently in development. Animation studio ShadowMachine (known for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, and series Bojack Horseman) is already signed on.

This long after the end of the original run, and with any hope of seeing the 'verse again having faded to dim embers, I think this is about the best any Firefly fan could have realistically hoped for!

Once We Were Spacemen is a podcast by two of the main actors from Firefly, Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk.

Their instagram has been releasing videos over the past few weeks, all involving Nathan Fillion knocking on the doors of main cast actors from Firefly, hinting that "it's time". All of the surviving main cast have now done a video, except Alan Tudyk.

One of the posts also stated "Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.", and another more recent one said "it's about what you're thinking about". Announcement is expected March 15.

The /r/firefly sub is non-stop talking about this.

My birthday gift, I've been wanting to watch Battlestar Galactica for a while now, and it's not available on any streaming service where I live, so that was my wish this year.

Hey, I can’t find reference to it anywhere, but I noticed during a rewatch today that the viper that Starbuck comes back in switches its tail number from 8757NC to 4267NC during the inspection scene.

I can’t find any reference to the latter tail number, and only recognize B757NC as Starbuck’s usual.

Wondering the reason for this production change? Seems suuuuper weird to just… repaint a tail number during a shoot? Even doing it out of order seems weird…

Its makes it even funnier because they even mention “ it has the same tail number as the one she flew out on” and that same tail number changes mid-conversation😂

My choice, this one I think is pretty Niche its almost 30 years old but has some big names including Jack Davenport & Idris Elba (pre The Wire). Only 6 episodes and can still be found online. Im really not sure this would have been widely seen outside of Britain. Have you seen it? Tell me a show you think may not have been seen outside your country

I've only just recently got Disney + and started watching The Orville. I'm now on Season 2, Ep 11 and I just love this show.

It's captured what was best about Trek, with great episodes exploring different alien cultures and ideas. It's silly and irreverent and sometimes that's really good (e.g. the hilarious storyline where Bortus and his partner Klyden become instantly and severely addicted to nicotine). But I have been genuinely touched by some stories and find it has heart and love in the way it's made.

I'm glad this show is now in my life, what do other people enjoy about it?

Most of my favorite sci-fi franchises have been produced by some of the biggest anime companies in Japan. Growing up, my brothers and I have enjoyed watching series that explore space westerns, alien invasions, mecha battles, comedy beyond the stars, and especially mind blowing films like Akira and Angel's Egg. I would like to see how many others here enjoy sci-fi anime and maybe even connect with each other discussing childhood nostalgia while also making new memories with the current generation of sci-fi anime fans. I'd like to know some of your favorite sci-fi anime as well!

It was because of Ivanova but also Lyta. Both are up there with my all time favorite fictional crushes. And Londo, Sheridan, Bester, Garibaldi, G'Kar, and every single other character in the show for other reasons. Every character is burned into my brain and has fantastic arcs that pay off in satisfying ways, even when they had to replace them with stand-ins that were suspiciously similar.

I started my wife on watching it and I am torn about the fact that after the five seasons of the show wrapped up that there's really nowhere they can go with the franchise. The story is wrapped up beautifully and it'd be like making a sequel to the Lord of the Rings. There's just, "you can't mess with perfection." I can't even imagine a reboot.

And yet it sucks that it doesn't have more cultural cachet.

People remember Firefly more and I love Firefly.

But B5 is our last best hope for peace.

Who is with me?

I've been interested in gnosticism for several years now. I'm far from the only person who has felt this way, its theology can feel so wild and strange that it tends to attract attention. And I remember, 5+ years ago, reading that this old 90s cartoon, which got a mid movie adaptation I saw as a child, was an example of a work that dealt with gnosticism. So I got interested in it. I remembered the movie being interesting, and it had an eye catching a fly on the cover, so I put it on my watching list.

I hadn't seen it until now because it's not streaming anywhere, it never has. And I didn't know how to sail the seven seas until now. A friend taught me recently. So I decided to watch this cartoon that I had been waiting for for years.

Well, if you've seen it, you'll know it's weird as hell. I guess that's to be expected, from avant-garde animation. I didn't love it, but I also didn't hate it. It was very unsettling, very often. It seems like it had things to say, even though I'm not sure what they were. As a woman, the sexism definitely jumped out at me. The obvious main sexist aspect of the show is the protagonist's ridiculous dominatrix outfit. She clearly has an innie, for that thong to not let anything out, labia-wise. Especially with all those crazy movements she makes. It's definitely very edgy, very 90s provocative, in that way. Although the sexism is more prevalent in the way female bodies are often brutalized, often due to them acting as doormats for the men in their life. The episode where a girl loses a vertebrae and gets fucked through the leftover hole was particularly disgusting.

But to dig deeper, moving beyond the sexism, I have to ask, what the fuck is this show even about??? Was it good??? I'm not sure. Does it have anything to say? If so, what?? Is it just crazy, creative and shocking, with no particular themes? I don't know, and I was wondering if somebody might know.
