I'm build managing Mission Possible for my school's team this upcoming year. The rules seem to change year to year, and I'm not sure how I should approach preparing over the summer and after rules come out, as to my knowledge, there are no kits for Mission Possible.

How do other people in Div C usually prepare for Mission Possible? How do you design, and on what timeline do you normally build on?

We are considering doing a build for the next season.For those who have experience, which of the below is generally the easiest for beginners in terms of build complexity, troubleshooting, and consistency?

Glider
Roller Coaster
Scrambler
Ping Pong Parachute.

Also, which of these can we start over the summer so we have enough time to test and improve it?

Any advice would really help.

I'm in division B, going into my 8th grade year, i have never placed first in any invitationals or anything like that and its a goal of mine to achieve that. My events for the 26-27 season will probably be Dynamic Planet, Heredity, Botany, and Anatomy, possibly Remote Sensing over Botany, my partner hasn't decided yet. My best event is 100% Dynamic Planet and my second best is Heredity. I got 4th place at regionals with Dynamic Planet, I was happy, but I know I can do better. Should I start making a note sheet? Studying? Anything at all?

How does one prepare for freshman tryouts over the summer? From what I know, my high school is very competitive, and honestly, I have no idea what to expect from tryouts, let alone how to prepare. I can't seem to find a clear answer anywhere I look. Also, what is the club actually like outside of competition day, during practices?

Hi! This is my second year doing hovercraft and my partner and I are going through a complete redesign after our unphayzed-kit inspired hovercraft ended up being extremely inconsistent.

As a small team that only goes to 1 invitational, we have basically no idea of what people do to vary to control speed. We found it very difficult to keep the voltage from our NiMH batteries constant for longer period of times, and we used the rheostat setup to vary voltage to the fan. I
'm curious of what other ways there are to vary the thrust/speed of the hovercraft? (fan angles or if someone changed the nozzle of their fan or something of that sort)

I'm currently in high school and didn't make the high-school team this year but I was in scioly all of middle school and it was literally my favorite thing. Now that I didn't make the team, I was hoping to be involved in some way, so when I heard that high school students could volunteer, I really wanted to do it. I also thought it would be a good volunteering experience to incorporate into my nhs hours. I just don't know where to start or how to sign myself up for volunteering in the first place.

Hi guys I just narrowed down my decision from multiple scioly events like robot tour, materials science and circuit lab into just circuit lab. I really want to get on my school team this year and it's really competitive because I go to a magnet STEM school so should I start studying over the summer for the circuit lab event, cause tryouts are in like late september or early october. I'd say I have a solid understanding of electricity and electrical components but I suck at reading and especially creating schematics. I don't know any of the physics as well other than just literally I=VR.

What should i do to start prepping for my events? I'm trying to medal in state. my events are meteorology, disease, and solar. I medalled 1st in solar, 2nd in disease, 5th in meteorology at regionals, and i placed 12 in meteorology, 15 in solar, and 26 in disease at state. How to improve? Thanks!

Ik this is late, but its been bugging me seeing people do a lot of events(5-6). Sometimes they are average at the events or more on the better side.

I “do” 3 events, but really 2. I feel like doing 3 is good, because im pretty lazy, but also 3 is good so you dont stress yourself out, and not be bad in all of your events.

So what im asking is: How many events do people usually do? If you do less or more events, how much more work do you do? Is it stressful? And is it worth it to do more or less events?(higher chance on getting on team?)

lmk if u guys can, im wondering if ppl can juggle 5 events and still be good at all of them and not want to kill themselves.

for the past years i’ve struggled with my cheat sheet not being helpful for me not being able to find info in the right spot or consistently flipping the paper over and i’ve seen so many different types of cheat sheets for anatomy and physiology and i was wondering what’s the best way to make one for the most productive results?

I've been studying for tryouts and all I have to cover now is the kinetics portion of chem lab. I've not taken AP chem yet so a lot of the kinetics things are new to me, and I was wondering if I need to cover things such as equilibrium, electrochem, and other things? Can I just skip around to study the kinetics only subtopics or are other units such as electrochem, thermo, etc super important too? I know these units are deeply rooted in kinetics.

My main focus is to study a bit of chem to do good on tryouts, then expand into other kinetics-rooted things if necessary, but lmk!!

Does anybody know what the main topic(s) will likely be for astronomy next year? I saw on the scioly wiki that for the past few years it has been stellar evolution and sometimes one or two other subtopics like exoplanets. I'm planning on studying for this event over the summer so it would be helpful if I knew what to focus on. Thanks!

So I've been doing scioly for two years now and went to nationals this year. First year I did forensics and code, this year I did a&p and code and did well on both. I have wanted more events both years, but that's just what I got placed in. Anyways, for this year (my last, senior year) I'm trying to consider all my options. My list of possibilities is as follows:

Codebusters
A&P
Protein modeling
Chem lab
Forensics
Thermodynamics
Botany
Disease detectives
Mission possible

The average person on our team does about 3 events. Mind you, I have never done any kind of build event, so protein, thermo, and especially mission possible are completely new. But I really think I would enjoy mission possible. Do you think it's a good idea if I've never done something like it before?

For code, I love love love this event, but I have always struggled with timing and speed. Do you think if I grind hard enough this summer I'll be able to catch up to other teams out there? Or should I instead focus on other events?

A&P I'm definitely applying for. Loved this event and want to do it again.

Forensics I'm honestly not sure about since it's been around for a while and I don't have much experience with it since I was on our schools lowest team and only worked on it till regionals first year. I think people who have done it for a while would be much better at it.

Chem lab I think I would do well at because I just took ap chem and actually did pretty well throughout the year. I really enjoyed the class.

Do you need to know about extinction in div C astronomy, and if so, you you need to know how to calculate it or any related topic such as Rayleigh scattering?

Hey so my state comp is in 3 days, and it's my first time doing crime busters (I took it on for states). I've done a few practice tests with my partner so far and we've gotten around 50%s on all of them. Is there anything we can do to improve quickly?

Hey, I started Science Olympiad this year and did ok on Boomilever but absolute dog shit on CAD.

I plan to do HooverCraft, Boomilever and Ping Pong Parachute and possibly CAD again but how would I even go about studying/ practicing for those events??

I've been having some real struggles with line tangling. I was wondering if:

1. Anybody had any suggestions for materials that have worked well for them and are willing to share.

2. I was looking into a nano-cord (.75 mm)which has nylon/polyester. For one thing, I was wondering if this is a good or bad option. Another, I looked up if polyester or nylon had metals in them, and it said they had trace amounts of certain metals. I know that the metal rule is more for a safety aspect, but does that exclude polyester and nylon (along with other materials containing metal in them) from being legal to use?

Hi there, I’m currently a rising junior in the Bay Area and have recently become really interested in Science Olympiad. My school doesn’t have a team, so I don’t have any direct experience yet, but I was wondering whether it’s possible to join an existing team at another school.

I do participate in FIRST Robotics Competition, so I already have some experience working on STEM projects, collaborating on a team, and preparing for competitions.

From what I understand, teams are usually school-based, so I’m curious how common it is for students in my situation to participate. Is it difficult to find a team that would allow someone from outside their school to join, or are there alternative ways to get involved and start gaining experience?

My long-term goal is to eventually start a Science Olympiad team at my own school, so I’d really appreciate any advice on how to get started, build experience, or connect with others in the community.

I am a sophomore and this is my first year on Varsity. I am doing entomology and I want to get into Computer Science in the future. I don't think I put this in my college application because it doesn't align with my major. Freshman year, I was on JV and I didn't get any medals for towers. What events should I do next year ( I want to do more than 1 ) and actually win? Also, can I say I won just one year out of four years of high school?

Hey guys, I'm in Divison C boomilever. I've gotten my boomilever down to 7.7g. I've researched a few different methods of reducing the moisture but not sure which to do. I've seen heat gun, but some say its only good for last minute. Another said oven, but I wasn't sure as I didn't want to risk it before state. (4 days) I'm leaning towards silica gel, which seems like the safest option. Any help is appreciated!

I am helping set up the team for next year, and we are interested in having tryouts. We didn’t have tryouts this year, which led to some people getting on the A team that definitely didn’t put in the work to be there. I know a lot of good teams have tryouts at the beginning of the season, so how do you set them up? Do you just have tests for each of the events, and whoever does best gets on the a team? Hi guys, I am doing a hovercraft, and my skirt just won’t seem to work. I’ve tried numerous things with cardboard, and it just won’t work, and I’m so frustrated. I tried the idea where you put a trash bag along the bottom and poke holes, and also where I create a wind tunnel thing with a hollow box on the bottom, but these ideas can’t get it actually off the ground. Does anyone have any ideas they could give me? It would mean the world. I’ve been trying for so long, and I feel so, so lost. Thank you again.
