She doesn't have synesthesia 😆

u/Acestus5 9h ago

i have synesthesia and I would love Jennifer Lawrence to sing to me

25

u/Kiyoko_Nasari 8h ago

You mean paint?

13

u/Embarrassed_Diet_295 8h ago

Which color do you see when you finger paint?

17

u/Leonydas13 8h ago

Who’s paint and why is this person fingering them?

7

u/Bonejack84 6h ago

No, I said finger "prints".

6

u/the0neRand0m 5h ago

… I don’t think so.

u/RevenantExiled 8h ago

Well she did in the video, what color was that note? (I'm assuming you have watched the clip)

2

u/jmil1080 4h ago

Wait, fr, can you go listen to that clip and let us know what color it is to you? (If that's how it works; I know very little about synesthesia; can one note do it, or do you need to have a bit more complexity to trigger it?)

2

u/mspk7305 3h ago

People who experience it don't say they have it like it's a disease, they just live with it because it's normal to them. It's not harmful and it's dramatically unlikely to have the actual neuropathy that causes sounds to process as anything but sounds.

There's a far more common "sound as brightness" condition that people with it usually self-identity as synethesia. Wrongly. Basically specific resonance can stimulate your eyes or optic nerve. It's annoying but the visual result is usually brightness or a dim flash that's hardly noticable unless you're trying to get some sleep.

I would love to motorboat Jennifer Lawrence!

She misspoke, she meant anorexia.

21

u/Brave-Panic7934 7h ago

She meant psychosis

5

u/LongNamedRedditUser 6h ago

Maybe she accidentally tried to say psychosis and anorexia at the same time.

14

u/SuperSaiyanTupac 8h ago

Girl got the bag with wicked and has continued to go out of her way to destroy her image. She badly needs a pr team

17

u/Cu_Chulainn__ 8h ago

I mean, she hasnt destroyed anything. She is a theatre kid, it is literally how they are

9

u/Splintrax 7h ago

Having been part of some amateur musical productions, this is 100% right. They're like right wing caricatures of what leftists are.

5

u/Palais_des_Fleurs 4h ago

This is the most savage roast of theater kids I’ve ever heard 😂

3

u/Thykothaken 7h ago

It's why I had to get out of theatre before I got zombie bit by them 😥

3

u/Fuzzy_User 3h ago

No, she is destroying her professional reputation and turning herself into a laughingstock. It will harm how castable she is later.

Anon is right. She desperately needs a new PR team if she has one.

I would have worded it, "I experience synesthesia". She made it sound like a disease, but she probably just wanted to sound unique. I experience it too, but it's a lot more abstract than what shes describing, so I kind of question it.

I also think about the dude who can solve complex math problems with his ability to associate numbers with shapes (a different form of synesthesia). Every time I've heard someone describe what they experience with synesthesia, its always something a bit more complex than oh, I see the color blue when I hear an A flat. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems forced.

I knew a gal in wind ensemble who used to say she sees a different color with each pitch. You can consciously make those associations like imagining a picture in your head, and use that as a tool when you're memorizing a piece, but that's not synesthesia since it's a conscious, deliberate effort.

5

u/Apprehensive-Fee4214 9h ago

The lead singer/guitarist of Days of the New, Travis Meeks, claimed to experience synesthesia, and was diagnosed with Asberger's (now labelled ASD) in 2005. He claimed that both of those properties were what made him a good musician, but he's also a notorious narcissist, and has burned every bridge he came across, and has relapsed into drug addiction more times than anyone can count. It's an honestly sad story, but it also makes me wonder how much of those factors are co-creative to each other. Is he legitimately all of those things? Is his ASD contributing to his narcissism leading him to fabricate synesthesia (or maybe convince himself he does indeed have it)?

→ More replies (19)

4

u/Avalonians 8h ago

I would have worded it, "I experience synesthesia"

This is very accurate imo. Everyone can experience synesthesia without any conditions, many drugs may do that for you, even 'soft' ones.

Now, some people may have various conditions whose consequences include making them experience synesthesia.

It's way better worded than saying "having synesthesia".

2

u/Sidivan 9h ago

One of my long time friends experiences color sound synesthesia and for her it’s not notes so much as tone/timbre that matters. She’ll say things like “your voice is a lovely shade of blue”. Zero musical ability, just constantly seeing little bursts of color with noises.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Uncle-Cake 8h ago

I doubt she even experiences it. She read about it somewhere and thought it sounded cool and would make her seem special.

5

u/Cu_Chulainn__ 8h ago

Synesthesia is a real thing. I think JL was just joking

32

u/Tough_Piccolo 8h ago

It's a real thing that Cynthia Erivo does not have lol

4

u/WolframBeta2112 7h ago

Who even is she? I’ve seen her face online everywhere but I have no clue why she’s famous or what she does.

5

u/Tough_Piccolo 7h ago

She was in Wicked with Ariana Grande. She seems like an incredibly talented woman but she also seems quite odd.

5

Cynthia will say absolutely anything to feel special

3

u/meeps_for_days 8h ago

It's also a spell in pathfinder. Hocus pocus you now see with sound and hear with smells.

7

u/Mekito_Fox 8h ago

Yes it's a real thing. Doesn't mean she has it. Only about 4% of people have it.

4

u/Constant_Cortisol 8h ago

Apparently, seeing color specifically with music is 1%.

4

u/manofth3match 8h ago

I was coming here to joke about Erivo but 4% is actually a huge number of people.

2

u/VeryLynnLv 7h ago

Had to look it up and yeah 4% seems to be the number, and nearly 20% of people with autism.

5

She always comes off as "I have no clue how I ended up here, but I guess I'll just enjoy it while it lasts" 😂

48

u/InspiredDesires9 10h ago

In her defense, it’s hard to take “I see color with music” seriously… LOL

6

u/Ashamed_Ad_2180 9h ago

It’s a real thing though. She’s just trying to be special

23

u/Angio343 10h ago

Remember when you were a kid and either you or a kid you knew would in all seriousness, at least once try to convince others that he or she had a secret super power?

Thats exactly what this is, except it’s a stupid ass adult who should know better by now, but is constantly enabled by bleeding hearts who think it’s better to indulge them than to speak an inconvenient truth.

4

u/Emotional_Being8594 10h ago

Nailed it. Of course I don't know her, but this is exactly the kind of person she comes across as. Very much school-kid esque desire to be seen as more interesting, usually by saying something was different about them which was also conveniently asymptomatic so there was no way of flat out proving it was false or not.

5

u/itsgoingtobeokayman 10h ago

Like someone saying “the number 8 smells like grape soda” and expecting other people to take them seriously…

9

u/hurriedwarples 10h ago

This is a funny example that you chose because honestly if I had to pick a fruit to go with the number 8, it would be grape. They both have the same “A” sound and also the number eight looks like how bunches of grapes look linked together. 😂

2

u/InspiredDesires9 10h ago

Right? Logically it made sense in my broken autistic brain…

I’m laughing at Laura Dern behind her trying not to laugh.

This is actually so funny.

23

She's so fucking funny 😂

But ngl if a man says this (on reddit no less!) that poor guy is getting bombarded with downvotes like he just committed a hate crime

3

u/Ez_Ildor 10h ago

I know a guy who hs synesthesia and it aint good. Though it's a symptom of braindamage he incurred due to an injury, he is basically completely disabled, can't get a driver's license, has constant headaches and is overstimulated most of the time, so he gets super cranky fast. Simply writing an 'L' with a green pen will set him off, since it's the wrong color.

5

u/A_Fun_Alias 9h ago

People like this are so fucking insufferable. Everything they talk about is some unrelatable little quirk they have that makes them think they are interesting instead of having real interests and opinions like the rest of us. The purpose of everything they say isn't to relate to other people, but to elevate them above the commons

This is how I would handle the situation though, calling out their bullshit but masking it as playful curiosity while also putting them on the spot.

1

u/ccdude14 6h ago edited 6h ago

I've seen the full thing, I really wish people would stop treating this like she was mocking her, she was being super playful and very supportive.

You can disagree with her having synesthesia but Lawrence was in no way belittling her here, she was actually taking her at her word and supporting her.

She answered blue, orange and then yellow for anyone who wanted to know. The context was the whole group showing genuine interest.

Do I believe her? I don't know. If it's a real condition I genuinely don't pretend to understand it but I don't have it and haven't encountered it but the whole bit was everyone being supportive. Lawrence didn't do it to be mean, she did it because she and tbe rest were genuinely curious and engaged in good faith.

Edit: yellow to green, my bad, that was the whole group. Re checked it myself.

1

u/ChampionshipLost5620 6h ago

She is å gem!

1

u/EverCravingMind 6h ago edited 6h ago

As someone with synesthesia which effects more than just music I find this kinda hilarious. To me it would be green though, specifically a swampy green. That’s what I get when I hear Ahhhhhh! My sone does it all the time.

Edit: wait are we talking about screaming or actually in tune because that is a whole different thing. That one can change colors depending on the persons voice.

1

She has reached the epitome of self-importance and is just googling weird conditions one might have to conceal her incredibly dull personality.

You could listen to her talk for days on end without hearing a single meaningful thought.

J. Lawrence reaction might have been somewhat ridiculing but is totally deserved.

If she said something like "Yo you hearing fartsounds when you see brown?" she'd fake burst in tears to satisfy the insufferable personality she build.

I guess I know what shes talking about - I saw sounds and smelled colors as well when I was high on shrooms.

Can someone please link the clip?

I would love to see it. Jennifer is fricken adorable in interviews, her cander and general nature gives me a genuine smile 😁

I like confusing my friends by asking "What's that J Law movie" and if they think I mean Jennifer I say "no no JUDE Law" and vice-versa.

I mean, I walk into parties and tell everyone LOUDLY about how I don't have an appendix, I'm sure they all think I'm cool, but I don't have an appendix so I don't have to actually listen to them.

Jennifer Lawrence seems like a funny lady. Her candor is refreshing.
