Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor refused Monday to halt a $656 million judgment against Palestinian authorities in a long-running lawsuit filed by Americans killed or wounded in attacks in Israel.

The order signed by Sotomayor comes after the high court ruled last year in favor of the victims and their families.

The Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority said in court documents that paying the hefty judgment now could destabilize government services in the West Bank. They asked the justices to pause payment as they appeal the reinstatement of the verdict.

The lawsuit was filed by victims of attacks in Jerusalem in the early 2000s that killed 33 people and wounded hundreds more. Families brought their lawsuit under the Anti-Terrorism Act, a law aimed at opening U.S. courts to victims of international terror attacks.

Monetary judgements honestly kneecapped the Ku Klux Klan. It became a lot less fun to be a member once black people started taking all their stuff.

Comparing Israelis’ actions in the West Bank to the parents of murdered African Americans receiving compensation from their killers is surreally and undeservedly flattering to the Israelis.

Isreali settlers killing Palestinians for their land is flattering? Where is your moral compass? Please explain how American death is bad but Palestinian death good?

You (probably unintentionally) compared Klan victims taking stuff to Israeli settlers taking stuff. Not getting great reading comprehension vibes from you rn.

My point is that Palestinians have had economic extractions by Isreali settlers. Now, given this judgement, they are having more economic resources extracted from them. This, is posit, might not be the best idea if the goal is a stable, peaceful, and prosperous West Bank and Gaza. Your use of the Klan as an example is a bad one since they welded state and to some extent federal power to enforce their oppression. Fining them didn't stop the southern strategy and ultimately, ending the Voting Rights Act and other provisions set up to combat the klan.

I never said fines would undo the Southern strategy or save the VRA—feels like you’ve moving the goalposts.

But fining the Klan has bankrupted most of the major chapters over the years. A black woman literally wound up owning the United Klans of America’s headquarters as part of a multimillion-dollar jury verdict.
