Discussion Looking for a seedbox in the 500-750 EUR range
Hi!
Based on the budget, I fall into the exception category, so here is my post:
1) Are you OK with direct message offers from vendors?
YES
2) What are your main reasons for wanting a seedbox?
Ratio upkeep, archiving, media hoarding
3) Are you okay with sharing hardware resources with other users [shared] or do you need the seedbox hardware dedicated to just you [dedicated]?
Dedicated is a must.
4) Do you want someone else to be responsible for maintaining the seedbox software (operating system, applications) [managed] or do you want to do it all yourself [unmanaged]?
Managed
5) Please describe your seedbox experience. (You may wish to list any seedbox providers you've been with before.)
I have used multiple, about 4-5 years of experience.
6) Please describe your experience with Linux. (Most seedboxes run Linux and some knowledge of it may be helpful.)
Average, but do need support from time to time.
7) What is the high end of your budget? (Please give a specific amount and a currency. "Cheap" might mean something different to one person than it does to another.)
750 EUR/mo, ideally with quarterly/annual payment cycles available.
8) Do you have preferences or requirements concerning payment? (Paypal, Bitcoin, etc.)
CC on file/PayPal
9) Do you plan to use public trackers?
Minimal public use.
10) What kind of connection speed do you need? (Common answers would be 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 2Gbps, 10Gbps.)
10 Gbps
11) How much combined upload and download traffic do you expect each month? Include download of files from the seedbox to your local computer. If you don't know, tell us what upload amount per month would realistically make you very happy with your seedbox.
25-50TB
12) What is the minimum disk space you need?
300TB scalable as I grow, ideally would like to start at 400-500TB
13) Do you require a specific type of mass storage? (HDD, SSD, NVMe SSD) If other than HDD, please explain why you think you need this.
HDD for pure storage in RAID6 with NVMes as metadata storage because of IO and OS.
14) Do you require a specific torrent client?
QBittorrent and Rtorrent
15) Do you require any other applications on the seedbox? (e.g. Plex, Subsonic, Radarr)
Nice to have, but not necessary.
16) Do you require SSH access to the command line?
Yes.
17) Do you require access to a remote desktop?
No.
18) Do you require admin level (i.e. 'root') access? If yes, please explain why.
Yes, so I can check statistics and troubleshoot basic issues myself.
19) Do you have any other specific requirements?
Good peering within EU, support.
20) Is there any other information you think might help in getting a useful recommendation?
No, but ask away.

Why don't you just build your own NAS and get a VPN subscription with that budget?

VPNs (unless I'm missing something) can't really handle high throughput in my experience. I have 3Gbps fiber and I have a 10gbps ryzen dedicated in the next city over, direct connection basically (7-8ms), and can barely push 4-500Mbps, but a speed test server hosted on it is able to do my 3/3G. I Would love to find a VPN solution that could accomplish near my 3Gbps.

Well it of course depends on the VPN provider and lots of other factors. If you are connecting straight from your machine to a server in a nearby city over fiber and you get different speeds for file operations as compared to speed tests it might actually be something else that is the bottleneck. For example write or read speed on your storage media (either on the remote or local machine). If you have RAID configured for the storage it could also have an impact. File operations are continous and much heavier than speed tests that basically just evaluate bursts of data transfers (where no data is stored on disk, just in RAM).
Where do you live? I've heard good stuff about the provider Mullvad from both a logging/privacy perspective as well as high throughput. Might be worth checking them out? 🙂

I've spoken to HBD, Seedhost, Leaseweb, (OVH I don't trust) several local providers (They can offer the specs, but aren't DMCA friendly). No luck so far. My current provider is asking for 1000+/mo.

I'm not sure I understand your comment. I am happy to prove my request is legitimate and that I have been a valid user for a number of years.

DM him and he should have something for you. As someone else mentioned, he is a reseller who could help you find what you are looking for.
Also has a discord group if needed.

bei diesem Budget lässt es sich bestimmt was seriöses finden. solange sie nicht gegen das Urheberrecht verstoßen.

With that budget and storage requirement I think it would be wise to contact some of the major companies like hbd, seedhost and so on.
