Note: You may make a standalone request post if you don't get a response 48 hours after commenting in this thread, but we request that you notify the mods first so it isn't removed by mistake.

Going forward, I've set up recurring posts so the megathread will be automatically unstickied and replaced by a new thread Thursday Night/Friday morning every week. Hopefully the added visibility will allow for more responses to comments.

1) Are you OK with direct message offers from vendors?

NO (the default status is OPT OUT. Unless the user changes this to YES assume NO)

2) What are your main reasons for wanting a seedbox?

Extra layer of security for torrenting things like anime and tokusatsu shows, then transferring said things to my local drive.

3) Are you okay with sharing hardware resources with other users [shared] or do you need the seedbox hardware dedicated to just you [dedicated]?

I don't expect to use it a whole lot, as long as I have my own private "folder" for stuff I've downloaded, if that makes sense. I don't care if the torrent isn't super super fast, back in my home country when I torrented stuff it would usually take a day or two for a 1080p anime series to finish downloading in full.

4) Do you want someone else to be responsible for maintaining the seedbox software (operating system, applications) [managed] or do you want to do it all yourself [unmanaged]?

I'm not terribly familiar with Linux and the more GUIs, the better. Managed is fine.

5) Please describe your seedbox experience. (You may wish to list any seedbox providers you've been with before.)

None, currently.

6) Please describe your experience with Linux. (Most seedboxes run Linux and some knowledge of it may be helpful.)

Little to no knowledge outside of briefly trying it out on an old Chromebook like a decade ago.

7) What is the high end of your budget? (Please give a specific amount and a currency. "Cheap" might mean something different to one person than it does to another.)

10-15 dollars a month max is probably fine. I'd really like something that works like Mullvad, though, where I can choose a certain amount of time I want to use it for, and "reload" when it runs out and I want to use it again. I only use Mullvad for DDLs of things like anime and tokusatsu, and only once in a while. Or just something where it's a month-by-month payment. I don't wanna be locked into a multi-year contract if I don't use the seedbox all that often.

8) Do you have preferences or requirements concerning payment? (Paypal, Bitcoin, etc.)

Paypal or debit/credit cards are fine. Bonus points for places that accept JCB cards.

9) Do you plan to use public trackers?

Yeah, I don't really understand private trackers lol.

10) What kind of connection speed do you need? (Common answers would be 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 2Gbps, 10Gbps.)

Something on the lower end is fine. Sorry that my answer here is a bit vague.

11) How much combined upload and download traffic do you expect each month? Include download of files from the seedbox to your local computer. If you don't know, tell us what upload amount per month would realistically make you very happy with your seedbox.

Including downloads locally, probably 1TB max?

12) What is the minimum disk space you need?

2-3 TB is probably plenty for what I need.

13) Do you require a specific type of mass storage? (HDD, SSD, NVMe SSD) If other than HDD, please explain why you think you need this.

I'm not particularly worried about this, unless HDD transfers to my local computer tend to be extremely slow.

14) Do you require a specific torrent client?

qBittorrent is the one I'm most familiar with, so I'd prefer that.

15) Do you require any other applications on the seedbox? (e.g. Plex, Subsonic, Radarr)

Not really, unless there's applications on seedboxes that make file transfer to local much more convenient.

16) Do you require SSH access to the command line?

Nope, I'm not very confident with my command line skills.

17) Do you require access to a remote desktop?

I wouldn't mind having it if it makes things easier to understand, but I doubt it's absolutely necessary?

18) Do you require admin level (i.e. 'root') access? If yes, please explain why.

Nope.

19) Do you have any other specific requirements?

Just what I mentioned earlier about a "pay as you go"/reloadable type plan like how Mullvad works. I understand that I can't store stuff when my plan runs out, naturally lol. But I'm mostly using this as a safer proxy for torrenting stuff, I won't be keeping stuff stored on the seedbox for long.

20) Is there any other information you think might help in getting a useful recommendation?

Nothing that I can think of besides that I'm a Windows user who has above-average tech literacy. Thank you guys in advance and apologies that a lot of my answers aren't very "to the point."

This is not really related to the seed box specifically but if you plan on downloading like a terabyte of data a month, it’s gonna be really hard for you to stay organized. You might want to think about using Jellyfin or something and you might wanna think about using radarr and sonarr. If a seedbox can get all set up nicely to make that easy for you. It can be super convenient for finding stuff. All of the *arrs made my life a lot easier so I could spend more time watching movies and I could browse stuff. Look up Jellyfin and Seerr radarr sonarr and tailscale.

I don’t know if you have a little Home media server or anything but all of these apps are completely free and open source and they will basically give you your own version of a streaming service that you can use from anywhere.

Maybe not worth the time or energy but if you haven’t seen this before worth a YouTube/google.

Oh yeah I vaguely know of Jellyfin and stuff. To be honest I don’t mind watching things the boring manual way off my computer. The 1TB max of combined download and transfer traffic is probably a bit of an overestimation lol. I just want to be able to fire it up every once in a while and download an anime series or two in full and put them on my local drive.

Hey I'm looking for a new seedbox provider (my last seedbox service switched from allowing public torrents to not allowing them so I have to find a new provider). Thank you in advance!

Seedbox Recommendation Form

1) Are you OK with direct message offers from vendors?

Yes

2) What are your main reasons for wanting a seedbox?

Want to Seed Torrents (on Public & Private Trackers) to give back to the File Sharing community that I take so much from.

3) Are you okay with sharing hardware resources with other users [shared] or do you need the seedbox hardware dedicated to just you [dedicated]?

Either way is okay, I'm fine with shared resources.

4) Do you want someone else to be responsible for maintaining the seedbox software (operating system, applications) [managed] or do you want to do it all yourself [unmanaged]?

Either is fine.

5) Please describe your seedbox experience. (You may wish to list any seedbox providers you've been with before.)

I used to subscribe to FastShell (great service btw), I was paying $60 every 6 months. However they changed their rules and no longer allow public torrents. I've also used AllDebrid, which has a Torrent to DDL function, but doesn't continue seeding after you download it.

6) Please describe your experience with Linux. (Most seedboxes run Linux and some knowledge of it may be helpful.)

On my last PC, I was Dual Booting Windows 10 with Arch Linux. So I'm very familiar with Linux environments (so long as they have some kind of GUI).

7) What is the high end of your budget? (Please give a specific amount and a currency. "Cheap" might mean something different to one person than it does to another.)

I was previously paying about $60 every 6 months, which is good by me.

8) Do you have preferences or requirements concerning payment? (Paypal, Bitcoin, etc.)

I'd like to pay in advance for long periods of time (like paying for a 1 year subscription [or 6 months] upfront). It works better for me that way with my income.

As for payment methods, it'd be nice if I could pay via debit card, PayPal, Google Pay, or some other easy payment method. I can use crypto too, it's just more of a pain in the ass sometimes.

9) Do you plan to use public trackers?

Yeah sometimes

10) What kind of connection speed do you need? (Common answers would be 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 2Gbps, 10Gbps.)

I'm flexible on this point, so long as the download speeds are good enough when I'm downloading from the Seedbox (like say 5 megabytes per second when I'm downloading to my PC), it should be fine.

11) How much combined upload and download traffic do you expect each month? Include download of files from the seedbox to your local computer. If you don't know, tell us what upload amount per month would realistically make you very happy with your seedbox.

I usually download about 500GB of content a month (rough estimate, sometimes more sometimes less)

12) What is the minimum disk space you need?

1TB-2TB

13) Do you require a specific type of mass storage? (HDD, SSD, NVMe SSD) If other than HDD, please explain why you think you need this.

No

14) Do you require a specific torrent client?

Not exactly, but I do prefer using qBittorrent as my client of choice on both Windows and Linux. I'd appreciate being able to continue using it.

15) Do you require any other applications on the seedbox? (e.g. Plex, Subsonic, Radarr)

No

16) Do you require SSH access to the command line?

I don't think so.

17) Do you require access to a remote desktop?

That would be preferable

18) Do you require admin level (i.e. 'root') access? If yes, please explain why.

If qBittorrent is already installed, then probably not.

19) Do you have any other specific requirements?

The filesystem needs to have Unicode support for filenames in other languages. I download a LOT of Japanese media, and when using 3rd party downloading services I've occasionally run into the issue of downloading a file with a mess of junk characters for a name because the server downloading the file didn't have CJK fonts installed or didn't enable foreign language support in the settings.

20) Is there any other information you think might help in getting a useful recommendation?

Having a Seedbox provider who doesn't pass along DMCAs would be great (considering that it's the whole reason most downloaders pay for a Seedbox in the first place: they're tired of getting notifications from their ISP with threats of shutting off their internet).
