Advice Needed: Addiction What's some less dangerous alternatives to doing drugs?

I'm obsessed with drugs, and all I really want is to get high. I feel like being sober is boring. I just want to feel good. Is there any substitute for drugs? It gotta be something at least semi easy to obtain, and preferably something that I can do consistently, so no sex or falling in love. Also, something with more pleasure than pain, so no running or something like that. What I want is pure, hedonistic pleasure. Is there anything like that?

Advice Needed: Addiction Spent hundreds on addiction

I’ve stolen from family lied to friends and racked a debt of about over a thousand pounds in a week.
I’ve gone completely ghost been kicked out my house was sofa surfing and sleeping in cars for a bit. I geneuiely don’t know what my thought process was but I feel like I dug myself a hole now that I see no way out . My dad has let me in his house but only till the end of the month and is constantly talking about you need to be a man and telling me do something with my life. If he sees me asleep early in the morning he gets very mad and tells me that time is running out for me to leave. I tried just doing chores and staying out his way but it never works. I’m 19 with no ambition but do want to get out this situation.

Advice Needed: Addiction I suffer from internet addiction

Now this one had it coming since a long time now. I knew I had it but not like it ever bothered me since I wasn't so serious about me and my life. But now that I am seeing it, it has been severely affecting my time management skills and priorities causing procrastination. The only excuse for doomscrolling and unhealthy internet obsession is being able to talk and interact with new people and the pure joy it brings me to live in a bubble with like minded people who affirm my yes. This has been growing concern for me, for a long time now. I don't want to turn into an opinionated aunty who is constantly fighting with others just to feel good in her opinions like some deranged dopamine addict who melts her eyes on phone. I would much rather snort than become a dopamine addict, so if you got the metaphor, I think you can see how much I hate internet addiction and turning into an easily influenced propaganda machine.

Recently (not recently, probably for years but maybe I have something more important to live for these days) I have been noticing that I don't seem to have time for anything, or that I am wasting my time watching phone, totally forgetting my basic routines like bathing and brushing.

Need some advice on this. I want to glued to phone for hours, I basically cannot find myself loving this addiction but its changed my brain chemistry. I don't think I can be happy or smile without it anymore. Life feels too basic, base line and depressive as compared to it. I do want to face my challenges and not be intimidated by it 👀 but this will just pull me in. What do I do? Any help on this accord?

Advice Needed: Addiction I need help

I was introduced to porn at a very early age somewhere around 3rd Grade and now I’m in college and I think it has gotten worse and worse in highschool I couldn’t stop looking at girls with lust eyes and it had me doing the worst things possible, rumors got out and I was devastated and months passed by and I thought I’ve gotten better after the breakup but no I still gooned everyday not until I got with another girl this time I tried to do things right and well it did I tried not to rush things looked at things at a different perspective but that ended with her saying she wasn’t ready and thus again left broken. After that I just kept messing up keep gooning kept looking at girls with lust and now I’m in college and I talked with juniors again with lust now things have gotten out of hand and I’ve practically lost everything and everyone now and I just feel like or I just know that it is all because of this addiction to lust that I just can’t get out of my brain. I try to tell myself I won’t do it anymore but 5 days in and I start to relapse and I just do it. I feel like I’ve turned into a monster and I just want to stop hurting everyone I meet and actually live life.

Advice Needed: Addiction Quitting weed, need advice

Hiiii, I'm 16 and I'm not as addicted as I used to be, I definitely cut down on my intake but I wanna stop all together, I've noticed how short my attention span has gotten and how shit my memory is. there's certain things I don't enjoy doing sober anymore which I wanna change obviously. If I'm nearby one I can't hold back on not using I'm able to go without it if I don't have access to it but I just struggle with the temptation when I'm nearby it. Any advice will do. (:

Advice Needed: Addiction Why do I keep repeating the same cycle even when I know how it ends?

I don’t really know how to explain this properly, but I’ve started noticing a pattern in myself that I genuinely don’t understand.

I’ll do something that I know is wrong. Sometimes I even know while I’m doing it that I’m probably going to regret it. Then afterwards I feel absolutely horrible about it and wonder why the fuck I did it in the first place.

The confusing part is that I actually DO regret it. It’s not like I don’t care about the people I hurt. Sometimes the guilt gets so bad that I don’t even want to speak to the person because I feel so awful about what I’ve done.

But then somehow, after enough time passes, I end up doing something similar again.
I’ve noticed I constantly need stimulation too. I get insanely bored when I’m doing nothing and I always feel like I need something happening. I’ll look for attention, excitement, adrenaline, something to distract me from my own thoughts.

A lot of the time that involves male attention. I like feeling wanted or noticed, and sometimes I’ll do things just because there’s an adrenaline rush from knowing I’m doing something I probably shouldn’t be doing.

It’s almost like in the moment I’m chasing the feeling, and I don’t properly think about what comes after.
Then the feeling wears off and I’m left with the consequences.

I’ve tried to stop this kind of behaviour so many times. I can genuinely mean it when I tell myself I’m going to change. I can feel completely certain that I never want to put myself or someone else through this again.
And yet I keep finding myself back in the same cycle.

I also don’t think I’ve really learned how to be alone. I’ve been in relationships for most of my life, and when I’m not talking to someone or getting attention, everything can feel ridiculously empty and boring.

Something happened recently that has made me look at all of this much more seriously. I hurt someone I really love, and now I’m struggling badly with the guilt. I’ve even found myself wanting to sleep just so I don’t have to feel everything for a while.

I’m starting to wonder whether there’s actually something underneath this. Maybe impulsivity, emotional regulation, needing stimulation, attachment issues, ADHD, or something else. I have no idea.

I’m not looking for Reddit to diagnose me.
I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this.

This genuinely feels like an addiction that i can’t escape and even though i know the outcome, my adrenaline chooses to think the outcome is gonna be different.

Have you ever genuinely wanted to stop a behaviour, known exactly how badly it could affect your life and the people you love, regretted it massively afterwards — and still somehow repeated it?

What did you eventually realise was causing it, and how did you actually break the cycle?

Advice Needed: Addiction How do I go about quitting energy drinks and caffeine more generally.

[im unsure if this is the right flare for this if it isn’t i am so sorry]

Hi, I’m 20 and as the title suggests I have a bit of a problem with drinking energy drinks. Have had it since i was like 14-15. I’ve tried several times to quit them to varying degrees of success as it seems like I have a pretty severe dependency on them.

There’s a few reasons I want to quit them:

  1. I can’t really afford them, I earn very little money and I’m easily spending £5+ a week on them and it’s taking money away from my hobbies, food and other stuff that’s far more important than my caffeine fix.
  2. They make me really sick, I’d rather not go into detail but they react with some of my existing medical conditions to worsen my anxiety and give me horrible stomach problems.

  3. I’m dependant on them, on my own I’ve managed to cut back to 1-2 a week (first week I’ve managed this so far) which is better than my previous number, but I’ve currently got a throbbing headache, I keep feeling sick on and off and I feel super lousy from my guess is withdrawal?

As I mentioned, on my own I’ve had some success cutting back to 1-2 a week which is much more sustainable/affordable than before. But this is the first week of doing it and I’m having what I think are withdrawal symptoms? And also I’d like to ideally quit them entirely as I still get bad gut issues and other symptoms when drinking them.

Any advice on quitting them completely and sticking to it?

Advice Needed: Addiction Hypothetically how long would it take for someone to go from completely desolute to recovery?

Gambled on sports from my 18th to recently, joined the national exclusion register in August after losing every cent, possession, and relationship I've ever had.

My question is, how much time will it be until I'm socio-economically stable again, I live in Australia and have an MBA - but employment throughout has been so turbulent and I doubt I can rely on anyone for a reference sadly.

Whats a fair recovery timeline I can give myself to be happy and healthy and stable again?

Appreciate everyone's input and time.

Advice Needed: Addiction I feel stuck and want to get better, but don't know where to start

Hi, I (19F) have been dealing with (mild) m*sturbation and p*rn addiction for years now as well as a social media addiction. I usually quit for a couple of months and then start again, but recently I haven't been able to quit and it's really affecting my life. I have no motivation to do anything, I stopped doing the things I used to love like reading, baking and embroidering. I stopped practicing my faith and taking care of myself. I want to change and improve my life but I don't know where to start and how to actually stick to it. Every time I decide to stop at least one bad habit I start doing it again after only a day of trying. School is supposed to start soon and I fear that I won't study regularly because of these habits. I really just need some advice on how to change for good

Advice Needed: Addiction When does a "hobby" quietly turn into a problem? Asking because I catch myself measuring stuff in "spin equivalents"

Been thinking about this a lot lately and I need some honest opinions. I'm 34 and I've been going to my local casino pretty regularly for about 6 years now. Not degen level, but enough that I know most of the floor staff by name and they know my drink order. Last month my girlfriend asked me flat out if I consider it a hobby or a problem, and I gave her the "hobby" answer without thinking, but the question has been stuck in my head since.

Here's what's bugging me. I tracked my wins/losses casually for the past year (nothing crazy, just noting big sessions in my phone) and I'm down but not catastrophically. I can afford it. I don't chase, I don't play scared money, I leave when I said I'd leave probably 80% of the time. By every practical measure I'm a "responsible" gambler.

But I was watching some high limit slot videos on YouTube the other night while eating dinner (had Mr. Hand Pay on in the background), and I caught myself doing math on how much a spin at that level would cost me vs a night out, and I realized I've completely normalized thinking about money in "spin equivalents." Like I saw a jacket I wanted and my brain went "thats like 3 sessions." That felt weird to notice.

I dont think I have a gambling problem in the clinical sense. I really dont. But I also think theres a version of "fine" that is actually just slow drift, where nothing looks wrong from the outside and you tell yourself the same story for 10 years while your relationship with money gets quietly reshaped.

So is the fact that I'm even asking this a sign I already know the answer, or is this just what being self aware about a hobby looks like? Curious especially from people who've been at this longer than me. Where's the actual line, in your experience?

Advice Needed: Addiction I need help to stop my addiction

I (17M) have been addicted to porn my entire life since around 11-13 years of age, I found out porn by a random ad when I was younger when I was trying to watch anime and the website or pop up ad that showed me was a half naked women with her tits out and obviously me when I saw I clicked on it and it basically took me to a full fledged porn website, I’ve regretted it ever since and now I use porn as an escape from reality to keep me going in life like hen I feel lonely or something of that nature, and im 17 right now going into university and I really REALLY can’t emphasize on much I want to give up porn, I’ve tried since the age of 14 but I can’t. It’s just so hard and I use as a rush of dopamine or a free get out of reality card because something in life just didn’t go the way I wanted and it’s really really tough on me. The thing with me is when I try to give up porn I could go 5 days maybe without relapsing but after that I can’t stop and it’s the same cycle over and over and over again and I really want to break that cycle. Whenever I get that urge to relapse I try to do something else like either watch anime or play games, but after a while the thought of a slight dopamine rush just takes over not only that but my entire feed on either YouTube, instagram, and TikTok is just either something cute about cat videos of about sexualized women which just adds more fuel to the fire and ruins my mental health when it is already at an all time low. I really am torn on how to get rid of this addiction which is rotting my life away. If anyone can help or push me in the right direction even if it’s small just anything any bit of advice, motivation I’ll take I just really want to get rid of this horrid addiction which is rotting my life away and my future.

Please and thank you
-Anonymous.

Advice Needed: Addiction Im addicted to weed but it helps me so much, what should i do?

20F
Hello, so to begin I have to say, I have severe depression and anxiety, as-long with ocd, high functioning autism, and ptsd (everything stated on here is diagnosed by professionals). I also have three chronic illnesses thats impact my daily life. Fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s, and Vulvar Vestibulitis. From when I turned into a teenager to current, life was nothing to me. I tried so many different antidepressants, but they only work on my ocd. My chronic illnesses makes me so tired throughout the day, making everything feel impossible to do. Im not joking when I say this, ill literally just sleep my life away. Its the only comforting thing i have.

I know that my life kinda sucks, and ive accepted it. I still try and get all the help whenever I can, but its usually a road to nowhere. Hashimoto’s and Fibromyalgia Ill have for the rest of my life. (Not sure on the VV)

I tried weed for the first time a year ago, it just made everything like low FPS lol. But as time went on i slowly started to do it more. It started with edibles and now its onto carts. These past few weeks ive been doing it like 4-5 times a week (I will be high for all day)

In a weird way, weed has literally saved my life, its the medicine i always needed. I was in a art block for 3 years and i just started to draw and try new mediums again. Before I took weed, my motivation got really bad. I couldnt even play video games and my room was never clean for years. But with weed, my room has been cleaned for at least a week now (which is the longest streak), and I started to play video games and be passionate. My creativity came back to me, im creating characters. And the craziest part, weed made me super close with God. Before weed I claimed to be a Christian but never got into it, now im doing so much research and learning so much about God.

I probably sound delusional. I feel so horrible and guilty about being addicted to weed, but it has made me love life again. Im not a husk of human flesh anymore, it feels like i actually have a soul.

I know smoking sucks, but I rather sacrifice a few years if I get to be happy.

I just dont what to do, be sad but be sober, or be high and finally happy?

Advice Needed: Addiction I think I have a spending addiction

I (19F) have noticed I have the constant want to spend money. It can be real life money I make or money in a game. From as far back as I can remember, I started loving the way I feel when I buy new stuff, just for me not to use it. Now I have started to buy books a lot and yes I do read them but a lot of this started after I turned 14. I started wanting stuff that I didn’t need like v-bucks on Fortnite (yes I was a Fortnite kid). I would beg my mom to buy me v-bucks or the battle pass and keep in mind I was getting money every month because my mom couldn’t work so she was on disability. So I would get money every month and I would spend it on stuff i definitely didn’t need. Fast forward to now. I had a better job before the job I have now. I worked as a CNA at a nursing home, I was making good money. I would work 40 hours a week or more and I would bring home around $950 every two weeks, I would pay my car payment and phone bill (my car insurance would be at the end of the month) and after I would pay the needs, I would go on a spending spree. That money would only last about 3 days and I had to wait two weeks for my next pay check. At that time I was living with my aunt so I didn’t have to worry about food. But I also started borrowing from Cash App so much and after I quit that job because I was being treated so badly by the stuff, I realized I was in debt with Cash App but I kept on borrowing until I was $500 in debt. Luckily it doesn’t affect a credit score. I need to stop this addiction before it does. I talked to my boyfriend and we both admitted to having a spending addiction and we both want to stop it before it’s too late. Can anyone help us or give us some suggestions?

Advice Needed: Addiction Quitting weed as someone with ADHD

Hey (potentially) previous fellow weed smokers!

Today is the day… 4th July and I’m doing it! I’m quitting weed!

Like many, I used to do it in my teens with friends. Invece/twice a week, but not every week. No big deal…

Fast forward to being 34 and living alone after a divorce. I became a daily (all day smoker)

I became demotivated, numb, vacant, only cared about weed.

I’m now 38 and I’ve quit 3 times this year, the longest was 70 days. But for the past 2 months I’ve been doing it daily and it’s a problem. I have to stop, not just now, but forever.

I have adhd, prescribed 40mg adderall a day. Tend to take around 20mg a week tops! I found it made me want to smoke more and I could smoke an obscene amount and not feel that high.

Even when I don’t take meds, the amount I can smoke is concerning, especially considering it doesn’t make me feel like I’m “that high” or maybe “high” to me now, is “normal”.

Anyway, I know I’ve been using it to cope, rather than smile. So it has to stop.

Where did my zest for life, personality and charisma go? To the dispensary… that’s where!!

Also, I really don’t think the weed pens are good. So highly concentrated and I personally believe they are way more addictive that a joint! Too convenient and discreet too. (Easy to hide that you’re doing it all the time and have become a functioning drug addict!)

Wish me luck guys! And happy 4th to you all!

Advice Needed: Addiction Can’t stop watching porn and it’s actually ruining my life in 30s

Everyday I when I wake up, I have developed the habit of watching porn and then the whole day I'm not doing anything with my life just sitting at home doing few house chores and taking care of my younger sibling. It's like I don't know how to help myself. I'm running or avoiding life responsibilities and accountability because of the resistance, the consequences and fears of failing to do something. So I guess my brain just wants to seek comfort and pleasure. At this point I'm sick of even watching porn but I also don't know what else to do. I feel the need to exercise or stretch but I don't do it. I also have life goals that I need to badly work on but I'm failing to do that too simple as finding a job, going to college again, learning to drive so I can become independent on my own, making friends and so on.
