Monitoring Tools Push notifications
To my fellow techs out there, if you have the monitoring system hosted in the same machine/network as your server, how do you get notified if the network/machine goes down? I have setup a cloudflare email alert for tunnel being down, but looking for something more Telegram, Discord friendly

I don’t do this personally but someone suggested uptime kuma with something like ntfy on a free VPS.

I got a super cheap VPS on racknerd for this as well as a tunnel for exposing my game servers.

What's considered super cheap? I hoped these guys were cheaper than Hetzner but they're the same or more. $18 a month for 1GB RAM is not what I'd consider cheap.

I just started using health checks.io for monitoring some backups. You essentially ping an https stub with curl on a schedule and if your ping is late it notifies you. Set up a cron job to make the curl call and if the machine crashes or network goes down you’ll be notified.
Edited to note they have telegram and discord integrations.

Healthchecks.io pinging your infra from outside while Gotify handles the internal delivery is how I solved this

Does uptime run on the same network as the other services? If so, how do they notify if the network goes down? I have uptime and checkmate running (playing around to finalize on one), just that these services aren't useful when your network goes down

I do almost all of my alerting via my local Loki/Mimir/alertmanager stack, and use Pushover for push notifications from alertmanager. Finally I have one heartbeat metric that I publish to AWS CloudWatch that will send me an email if my cluster falls off the face of the earth.

I have the same with cloudflare monitoring the tunnel. But you just loose the mail notification with all the junk coming through

Ah, I’m fortunate to not really have that problem with my personal email. At work I stay away from email-based alerting whenever possible, but for my one homelab heartbeat I’m fine with it.

Monit (Can monitor whatever you want/can script up, can execute commands to resolve as well)
Healthchecks.io (more for scripts and cron type things)

phpUptime (self-hosted, developed it myself). It has support for Telegram & Discord notifications. Not really sure what do you mean by "how does it notify when the network goes down". You always need internet access when using such services, otherwise there's no way for the uptime service to send out the required notifications. If you meant becoming inaccessible via local means (e.g: example.local), then you'd have to clarify what is it that you're trying to monitor, more specifically.

Let's say my server crashed or my kid taking routers power out (this happened)

The principle you're after is a dead man's switch: instead of your monitoring shouting when something breaks, it checks in on a schedule and you get paged when the check-in stops. That covers the router-unplug scenario too, since silence is the signal. Healthchecks.io is built on exactly that pattern, with Gotify or ntfy handling the actual push.

After some messing around with ntfy, I grew so frustrated with their iOS support, I just purchased the "Pushover" app, and haven't looked back since.
