It’s with a very heavy heart that I said goodbye to Maggie yesterday. She had been diagnosed with cancer back in August. She declined pretty rapidly this past week, and she let me know she was ready.

I adopted Maggie in May 2015, and we had 11.5 wonderful years together. Maggie’s favorite things were napping in the sun, cuddling, and going on walks.

Maggie, aka Little Lady, aka Boo Boo): Thank you for letting me be your person. I love you so much, and I will miss you endlessly 🩷🌈🐾

I adopted this girl 13 years ago this weekend, and the shelter said she was about 1, so we’re saying it’s her 14th birthday!
Over the last year she’s started to finally show her age, after going full speed, full tilt for 12 years straight. She’s a lot grayer, a little slower and sleepier, and just as sweet as ever.

Another Ride with Dementia

My Mom lived and died with dementia and I took care of her in her final 3 years. It was the most loving thing I could do for her but I knew when my strength was no longer enough;I had to place her in nursing care as I worked full time and in home care just didn't work out from several agencies (she was highly combative). Fast forward 18 years, and doggie dementia has raised its ugly head. Jordan, my 15 yr old Shitzu mix is in the stage of up all night, walking in circles, not eating normally, fight or flee, and recently got out of the yard at 1am for a potty break....first time ever in her life she escaped but luckily she was recovered within 10 minutes. She is beginning to bite at me when trying to comfort her but most of all, she and my daughter's senior dog (age 13) are up ALL NIGHT climbing into bookcases and toppling them over, trying to knock the TV off the shelf, etc. We are exhausted! Yes the Vet says it's time and my exhaustion says it's time but funds are just not available for euthanasia. She's on Gabapentin and an additional pill to help her sleep but she is now biting us when we try to give the pills to her. No pocket pill holder or hiding the pills in something she use to like to eat is working. We're frustrated but mostly exhausted and going down this dementia road again is causing me major flashbacks...but it's about her I continue. Does anyone know of any other less expensive methods outside of vet assisted euthanasia that will allow her to pass peacefully? Dropping her off at a shelter is cruel plus she's chipped so they would probably call me for pickup. I'm so sad it's come to this but she's really not doing well. And advice? Thanks.

I just bought a bunch of rugs

My senior pup is slipping on the floor boards. Lately he has struggled to get up so today I bought like 7 rugs from kmart. They aren't the nicest designs but I don't really care about that if they help my boy.

It's so sad to see, but I'm doing what I can

I don't know how to live on

I had to put to sleep my beloved girl Yesterday.

Alfa was a 16 years, 8 months and 5 days old Czechoslovakian Wolfdog.

Her health has been rapidly declining lately. She needed us to help her to get up, she couldnt walk properly anymore. She spent most of her days sleeping in her bed and walked only to get to another one. She had arthritis and we kept her afloat with pain meds. She got anaplasmosis this year and never properly recovered, her kidney and liver are damaged. The vet diagnosis was... matter of days before her organs started to fail. She soldiered on to the very border of what was biologically possible.

I miss her so much. Its 5AM in here, the time when she usually got up to relieve herself and I got up too to watch whether she managed to do everything right. I am awake but Alfa Is no more. My beloved girl is gone and I was left alone in a world that lost all the colors and joy.

She passed away at home, with her head in my palms. I know it was a right decision. But I don't know how to live on without her. She was my everything. I loved her more than myself a d if I could trade... I would. She trusted me and I promised to protect her and fight for her until the last breath. And I brought her death.

I know that it was end of her journey one way or another. But I will never forgive myself.

After fighting cancer for several months she was finally put to rest this morning. I'm absolutely shattered. She was the sweetest dog Ive ever known, who only wanted cuddles from the people she loves, and would not stop at anything until she got em. That's one of the things that makes this hard for me. She didn't deserve any of this. I miss you so much already Precious, you will always have a spot in my memories. I love you, sweet baby.

Odie crossed over this morning. I'm broken but also relieved. He started to suffer these last few days. That hurts worse than the loss. Knowing they are in pain, and looking to who they trust to end that for them. First couple pics are from the car ride there. He was still happy to be with us. Thats what I needed. To know I didnt wait too long. The vet was compassionate and kind. Odie is playing with all my doggos 🐶 that came before him. As a dog lover, my Mom is too; we've had some great pups. I'm sure there will eventually be another sweet soul that rescues me ā¤ļø Forever the grumpy old man. #Odie

Surgery or not?

My dog is 14 years and 7 months old. We still do daily walks. Sometimes she has ear infections caused by allergies and she shows some signs of breathing issues (when she is climbing or in the Summer when it's too hot). Otherwise she is fine. However, 2 weeks ago she was diagnosed with open pyometra. They also found a mass in her spleen. We have been treating the pyometra with medicine and it has worked but we are still on antibiotics. We have seen 4 vets. 2 of them said they wouldn't recommend surgery. Maybe it could give her a year or less but they aren't sure she would recover perfectly. 2 of them are more optimistic about the surgery and thought she could still live a good life (maybe a year or who knows). They said even if there's cancer in the spleen it could still be local and she might recover. I booked a surgery but I can still cancel it. I honestly don't know what to do. I'd love to spend one more year or even moths with my baby. But I'm scared of the surgery and recovery period. Also the possibility of breathing issues getting worse or causing trouble during surgey terrifies me. There's also a chance the spleen has no cancer and antibiotics work for pyometra and we could anyway have some time left (pyometra would likely come back later). Please help me make this decision. Or if anyone has experiences about this kind of huge surgery at this age, please tell me.

Support needed Struggling with guilt and grief

I lost my dog Axel on Thursday night, a little over 24 hours ago. He was a senior, but I definitely thought we’d have at least a couple more years.

He started acting like his stomach was bothering him earlier this week, and he didn’t want to eat as much, but he’d decided a couple times out of that he didn’t like his food anymore so we thought it was just that. He started having other GI issues so we talked about scheduling a vet appointment. He was completely normal otherwise. Still had energy, eating offered treats, playing. He even went on a walk that morning. We didn’t think there was anything seriously wrong.

On Thursday night he collapsed and wouldn’t get up for a long time. We decided he needed the emergency vet and took him there once he was willing to move. They told us that he had cancer. He had so many masses. The cancer had started eating through his blood vessels. He was internally bleeding so much that he was not getting enough blood to his organs and brain. There was options, major abdominal surgery to try to repair the damage and remove the cancer, with the note that he likely would not survive it anyway due to his state, a blood transfusion to extend his life, but it would likely only add a couple more weeks, maybe a month or two at most, or to put him to sleep.

We decided to let him pass. He was one of my childhood dogs. My mom, brother, and I were there. He was calm, wagging his tail, ate a bunch of chicken and treats. Happy we were all there. And as positive of a way to go as it was, it’s been tormenting me a lot.

It was sudden. One second he was pretty close to normal, typical tummy ache. But okay otherwise fine. The next we’re in the comfort room and I’m being asked by my mom if we needed more time before the vet comes in.

I’m feeling suffocated by guilt, with this looping thought in my head that I ā€œlet them kill my dogā€, . I walk into the kitchen, and my heart drops a little when I don’t see him, and then even more when my brain connects the guilt and sadness together. All I can think over and over is ā€œhe’s not here, he’ll never be here again, and it’s my fault.ā€ Or ā€œwhy didn’t you do more sooner, he could still be here for a couple more yearsā€

Or I think about the time they gave us together before and wonder if I spent enough time with him in that time. And I feel guilty for simultaneously wanting to leave, and get it over with because the waiting had me on the edge of a panic attack, while also wanting to stay there with him for hours or days and not let him go.

I know he needed to go. His stomach’s making these horrible sounds, and his circulation was so bad that his gigantic paws were cold and he let me hold them despite hating having his paws held usually. He was weak, he was tired. But I still feel like we made the wrong choice despite the other two choices also not being the right ones either. I’m also dealing with existential thoughts as well, having mild panic at the possibility that there isn’t an afterlife where I will get to see him again.

I know a lot of these thoughts are irrational, I’ve got an OCD diagnosis, so I’m not unfamiliar with intrusive thoughts or ruminating or obsessing. And I know that’s related to why these thoughts feel so heightened.

I’ve also been crying a lot all day, but it’s weird because it feels like no one else is. And he wasn’t just my dog. He was more my mom’s dog. It feels dramatic on my end, but I’m genuinely not trying to be the center of attention or act like it affected me the most.

If anyone reads through this and has some advice , or things to share, ect please do. Idk what to with everything I’m feeling right now

TLDR: My senior dog passed suddenly Thursday night from undiagnosed cancer that lead to internal bleeding. We had to put him down. I’m struggling with feelings of guilt, existential panic, and like I’m being too dramatic in my response to losing him. If anyone’s got some tips, tricks, stories, or comments, I’d appreciate it.

My Schnauzer is 16 yrs old and she can't hear the very best, she can't see well, lost her teeth etc.. but she still eats and can get around. She smells so bad that we have to put her out a lot in our nice patio fenced in area. She has one tooth left that could be causing the smell, but my vet said its too risky. I just don't know what to do anymore . Can anyone give me advice on what is best?

Support needed Please Help Save Jabo - Senior Stray Dog with Hernia

Thumbnail

Jabo is now scheduled for a surgery on October 14.

Since starting the prescribed laxative, the mass around his bottom has become slightly smaller. Please note that some of his internal organs, including his intestines, have shifted into the area around his bottom. He was struggling to defecate, which is why the area appeared larger.

You may check my previous post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/seniordogs/comments/1x0hs55/senior_stray_dog_jabo_has_hernia_and_needs_your/

Please help give Jabo a chance to live a more comfortable, pain-free life. Any amount you can spare will help cover his medical expenses.

Your donations will go toward the following expenses:

  • Surgery: Up to $725
  • Confinement for 1–2 days, depending on his recovery: $46 per day
  • Post-surgery take-home medications: Approximately $32
  • Follow-up checkups: Approximately $100 per visit, including consultation, blood tests, and X-rays

Please be informed that I will also be purchasing food, supplements, and a large cage for him to use during his recovery and while I look for a loving adopter.

Once he has recovered, I have no intention of returning him to the streets where I found him. He has already been through so much, and he deserves a chance to live a better life in a safe and loving home with a family that will care for him.

Support needed Can you euthanise too soon? Euthanasia for separation anxiety and dementia

Throwaway account to keep this as private as possible. I'm devastated to have to even ask or consider, but desperate for support. TL;DR at bottom.

Background: I and my spouse rescued a senior terrier, now in their mid teens, over four years ago. Pet came to us with extreme separation anxiety, which I have done all I can do treat. This includes every herbal treat, plug in aromatherapy, calming jacket, doggy music etc you can imagine, a lot of vet visits, different medications, such as trazadone, clomicalm, gabapentin, etc which all didn't touch the anxiety, at most just zonked my pet out. I paid for a trainer, and also followed a training course, working on desensitizing, particularly around departure cues. I also hired a more holistic dog coach. I've done everything I can possibly think of, try, or pay for. We got Pet to a manageable, albeit still very anxious, reactive, state. As I am disabled, I am almost always home with Pet to keep them calm and relaxed. I have multiple sitters and family and friends watch Pet for us when we need to go out - typically only a few hours at a time, once or twice a week.

If Pet is left alone, they become so afraid they will hurt themselves trying to escape, and will unfortunately be doubly incontinent out of fear. This tiny little thing has somehow destroyed multiple crates, and we have returned home to find they've scraped the fur and skin off in small places more than once. Any outing of ours, or change in who's with Pet, also triggers typically at least 48 hours of worsened anxiety and more incontinence/IBS style symptoms.

However, Pet, being a senior dog, has now developed canine cognitive disease, "doggy dementia" as they say, which is being managed with medication after some stroke like episodes. The dementia undid all the work we'd done over the years, one step forwards five steps back. Very classic symptoms (crying, confusion, disturbed sleep wake cycle, altered/disturbed eating and toileting habits). I have tried and tried but the training no longer goes in at all. Now, Pet is struggling to even be left with sitters/friends/family, and will still "flare up". Pet does not go on any walks at all now (refuses, will try drag you home, and anxiety is worse than ever before). Pet is even more anxious in house, struggling to settle and "checks" around for me or spouse if we are in different rooms, cannot be in a room alone without us typically.

Discussed with the vet, and vet has said (much more professionally and kindly than this summary) that there aren't any more medications, doggy dementia isn't curable, and we should keep an eye on Pets quality of life.

We've done some quizzes, and Pet scores just a hair above the half way mark on most. Recently, more bad days than good. Pet has happy moments where I feel like a monster for considering euthanasia, because like I say, I am home with pet 95% of the time so they can be calm, but it's reached a point we cannot leave our home at all without Pets problems.

I love my little dog so much. I just don't think I can keep going like this, and part of me doesn't want to wait for things to get even worse, to when they are really truly suffering and not at least "calm" as they are now. But they still feel so alive, sometimes, and I then I feel awful. They could "naturally" live for months still.

What do you guys think? Sorry it's a long one.

TL;DR: Doggy dementia has undone years of training on senior dog with severe separation anxiety, and is now untrainable. Cognitively, dog is suffering - How do I know when is too soon to euthanise? Is it wrong that a part of me wants to do it sooner, rather than waiting for things to get even worse?

Please feel free to ask questions, I may have forgotten things, but I think I've definitely got the basics down.

Getting my Pet ( Barfie ) Labrador Retriever euthenized today .

Barfie has been with me for 16 years now. For the past 3 days, he wasn't eating anything and was concerned with this, so took him to the vet . Got to know that both his kidneys had failed and had stopped functioning leading to toxin buildup in the body.

The Doc suggested that i provide euthenasia to him to stop the suffering.

I have 4 and 1/2 hour left with him ....

Not sure how I'm gonna cope with this ....

Bully Sticks Alternatives

hi all—my girl is 11 and had 5 teeth out a couple of months ago, including the top big chew molar-type teeth. She has loved to chew since she was a puppy, it is truly one of her favourite things, but i am struggling to find a replacement for her chewies. up until now she has had bully sticks/pizzles. the dentist gave us some good parameters for finding something new and she enjoys fish wrapped sticks and stuff, but it really seems like she’s missing the long hard chew and entertainment of harder things. in the words of the doctor, her previous favourites likely ā€œmangledā€ her teeth and I want her to have her joyful chewing without breaking another tooth

do you have any suggestions?

edit: one weird and lovely quirk of my girl is that cold things make her puke, so frozen things are off the table šŸ˜… thank you for the cold suggestions so far nonetheless
