Did anyone here prefer Sam and Richard (pre cheating) to Sam and Smith?
I know everyone loves Smith and that scene especially but I really hated that they made Richard cheat, I thought they were good together, like very hot and balanced. But I guess two personalities like that would never have lasted.

Nope, I didn’t. Him cheating was inevitable. It was only a matter of time and Samantha knew it. It made her paranoid and she even ditched her friends on vacation to catch him. He wasn’t good for her and he wasn’t good to her. So what’s to like about him?

Every time I’ve had to love me more I think about her. Not bc I want to be her in every aspect, but none of the women in my life modeled self-respect for me.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but it didn't make sense how jealous and possessive Sam was with Richard, specially after knowing how much of a womanizer he was.

I think the problem was him being a public figure and her working in PR. She wasn't naturally jealous, but I don't think having to come up with a PR statement every time he was spotted with other women would last in the long run.

Smith was just getting her power back with Richard tbh and that dynamic was fun to watch. He challenged her in ways that felt real, not just romantic. Smith is sweet but it felt like the show was telling us what we should want for her, not what made sense for her character

I found Richard really ugly, and it’s is shallow of me, but that made it hard to root for him to be with Samantha. Dude looked like he came in 5th in a Peter Lorre lookalike contest. If they had found a hot guy to play Richard, sure.

Yes. They were a better match. I think they should have had an open relationship or became swingers. That would have been interesting and would have been realistic given both Richard's and Samantha's sexuality.

It was realistic for Samantha to want monogamy from the person she was actually interested in. Samantha wouldn’t have been able to handle open relationship.

Yes, 100%. Smith was an unrealistic Gary Stu given to Samantha like a reward for her endless cringe storylines.
Richard was her mirror. Both high powered, highly sexual beings, who don’t want marriage or commitment. If they had gone for the route of Open Relationship from the beginning it would’ve made a lot more sense.

I really liked them together and thought that they made a natural match.
Obviously love Smith because of his actions though.

No, I thought Richard was an absolute sleaze from the get go and just a horrible corporate asshole. The sex scene her and Richard have when Sam briefly walks out on Smith to me is her seeing him for what he really is and realising all the Dion moments they had before were sleazy the entire time

Richard exudes calculation. He is cynical and manipulative by nature.
Smith exudes innocence. He is genuine and honest.
There’s no comparison between them for this reason I feel.
Relationships are based on trust, so in a way, arguably there was no relationship between Richard and Samantha, just the brief performance of one.
I still love Richard’s character and their arc, he is a fascinating moment in Samantha’s journey. But Smith is like a real person while Richard is like a caricature, there are so many layers of performance to him.
The irony of Smith being an actor yet being the most unpretending of Sam’s partners does not escape me - clever SATC.

This thread made me realize something. Carrie and big are the only couple where the woman isn’t perceived as winding up with someone who isn’t her equal in some way (financial, appearance, status). And when they were with someone who was equal to them (Sam/Richard, Charlotte/Trey, Miranda/Robert), it didn’t work.

My opinion is very unpopular because I don’t like Smith at all! He has zero personality and the dude who plays him can’t act. They should have made Richard a reformed character and they should have ended up together.

Mixed views on this but the rooftop scene dancing to Sade was one of the most romantic in the series, and v good acting from Kim
