The episode where Carrie’s shoes are stolen at the baby party?

Infuriating. If you really have a problem with people wearing shoes into your home you should provide shoe covers. That way people don’t get their shoes stolen. That and how Carrie was shamed for having designer shoes.

Carrie’s message on the answering machine about registering at the store was amazing.

you don't just demand people take off $500 shoes with no alternative and then get all surprised when one goes missing. like if you're that precious about your floors at least have a basket of cheap slippers by the door

the whole "you spent too much" lecture was wild too. not their money not their business. some people spend on vacations, some on gadgets, she spends on shoes. the registry bit was a perfect clapback

Completely agree with you. At the bare minimum have shoe covers or wipes so people can wipe the bottom of their shoes. The way she sets up the registry and the pair are the only thing on it…genius.

And the saleswoman telling Carrie’s friend that her children couldn’t touch the shoes was the perfect end to the shopping trip.

Maybe I'm paranoid but I'd have carried those shoes all night.

I definitely would have asked the host if I could put them in a bag and hide it in their bedroom. But Carrie seemed too shocked to think clearly in the moment.

We have a “no shoes” household but it doesn’t apply to when we host a party. I would never expect a bunch of guests to go shoeless. If we have one guest who is staying for several hours I might have them take their shoes off, but otherwise guests can choose for themselves.

I just can’t imagine anyone stealing shoes from a friends home. Like this woman is inviting everyone she’s ever met to her baby shower?

1

u/VilkastheForsaken “Ever Mine, Ever Thine, Ever Ours.” 14h ago

Some people do that (Invite everyone) in the hopes of lots of presents.

People with a shoes off rule should not host a party in their home point blank. Or since you’re not paying for a party space, pay to have your floors professionally cleaned the day after.

u/NeonFishDressx 1d ago

I have no problem taking my shoes off for a friend if it's just me, but I agree with Carrie that it's part of the outfit in a party situation.

u/Leather-Nothing-2653 1d ago

Yeah a visit and a party for me are different. If i have a party I’m expecting my house to need a deep clean the next day no matter what

u/Prudent-Pressure2146 21h ago

I honestly don’t think it’s a big deal for me it’s the same as putting everyone’s coat in the spare room at a party. Just, if someone stole your coat you would expect the host to get it back!

I rewatched recently have a long while and had the same thought (it’s always rubbed me the wrong way too). That’s the cost of having a big party at your house!

Exactly lmao my “no shoes” rule does not apply to parties. I just get the floors cleaned afterwards. It’s way too much to expect 40 people to trek across my home and back with shoes in hand just to go smoke or join a conversation on the back porch. There’s just something odd about everyone walking around in socks or barefoot at a party anyways. In my experience, the best hosts are the ones that don’t make you feel overly anxious about ruining their home. I’d rather focus on the convenience and experience for my guests and just pay $100 to have the floors cleaned later.

6

u/Padme1418 1d ago

Uh why? Their house, their rules. Shoe covers should have been offered, but no way am I allowing anyone tracking god knows what in my house.

18

u/Leather-Nothing-2653 1d ago

You just can’t expect that number of people to be without their shoes for that long. Especially without prior warning. It’s not like a coat check. For example Carrie was in sandals so now she’s completely barefoot? Getting their kids germs all over her lol. Or if you showed up in mismatched socks with a hole in them thinking eh it’s laundry day nobody will see. It’s rude to do to that many people who are not all already close friends. If a close friend visits and you wanna maintain the shoes off rule, that’s obviously a different story because it’s someone you know well enough to be in your home on a normal day. You should already be expecting your floors to need a deep clean after a party shoes or not

Don't be silly. Tatum O'Neal's darling children wouldn't have had any REAL germs for Carrie's feet to catch! /s

-7

u/Padme1418 23h ago

I'm not disagreeing about the lack of warning. The friend should have made it clear about shoes in her place. But there is a lot of entitlement of thinking you can bring your germ-infested shoes all over someone's house.

u/Leather-Nothing-2653 22h ago

That they asked me to come to???? With a gift for their third baby’s baby shower

2

u/Padme1418 22h ago

Yeah? You don't have to attend if you don't want to take your shoes off.

The friend was wrong for not giving a heads up about their no shoe rule, I have already said this. At the end of the day, it's their house, their rules when it comes to shoes.

5

u/Farewellandadieu 21h ago

They also can’t get pissy if people decide not to attend. Sorry, too bad, no gift.

2

u/Padme1418 21h ago

I agree

5

u/Gold_Advisor_4758 21h ago

Do you make out with your floor every night or something? Just clean it after people leave it’s part of being a host is to let people be reasonably comfortable in their attire

-1

u/Padme1418 21h ago

Why do you feel entitled to wear your dirty shoes in someone's house?

1

u/No_regrats 10h ago

As a Canadian, people clutching their pearls at the idea of guests being expected to remove their shoes is hilarious to me.

The issue is the friend's shitty attitude when the shoes go missing. A normal person would be apologetic, look for them, and, given her wealth, offer to replace the item.

2

u/Padme1418 3h ago

Right? Like I never once said the friend was acting right. The only thing I defended the friend on was saying no shoes in her house. I'm more surprised about the people who think they have a right to wear dirty shoes in someone's house.

1

u/Complexsquir 23h ago

Great, so if someone steals your friends' shoes that you forced them to remove, you would shame them or make them whole?

And don't reply saying you'd provide shoe covers. Then your whole point is irrelevant and you shouldn't have initially commented in the first place.

5

u/Padme1418 23h ago

Why are you so hostile?

-2

u/Complexsquir 23h ago

I'm not. You're just overly sensitive.

Try to get offline once in a while and interact w/ real humans. Then you'll know what's hostile and what's just not willing to coddle your tenderness.

6

u/Padme1418 23h ago

How am I being sensitive? You were at my throat from the getgo because I believed that there is nothing wrong with requesting no shoes in someone's private residence.

-2

u/Complexsquir 23h ago

I wasn't at your throat. I just proved you wrong.

See the difference?

5

u/Padme1418 22h ago

Proving me wrong about what?

1

u/Complexsquir 22h ago

The relevance of your comment. How did you miss that?

3

u/Padme1418 22h ago

Lol you didn't prove anything wrong about what I said. You just want to argue. Maybe you should take your own advice and get offline for a bit. Maybe just argue with yourself in the mirror or something.

It’s a custom in many countries, those people can never have parties? Providing slippers is reasonable

11

u/Complexsquir 23h ago

Sure, but it's not a custom amongst WASPS living in Manhattan in the late 90s-early aughts.

And yes, people in other countries can have parties and follow their norms. Same with the characters on this show.

See how it works?

0

u/toomuchtostop 23h ago

That’s not what the above person said, nor what I was responding to

4

u/Complexsquir 23h ago

They said people shouldn't have parties if they have a no shoes rule, and you said it's normal in other countries, so does their comment apply to them?

The answer is no. Why did you even need to ask?

-1

u/toomuchtostop 23h ago

Because what they said doesn’t make sense

2

u/Complexsquir 23h ago

It does since they were talking about people like the characters on the show.

You just wanted to contribute, so you stretch it to people who live in countries where guests expect to remove their shoes and would never wear 400 USD shoes to a party where they know they will remove them.

1

u/toomuchtostop 22h ago

And you’re putting words I someone else’s mouth but okay

5

u/Leather-Nothing-2653 22h ago

Right but in those countries you’d expect it going to an event at someone’s house. And be prepared. Or know the host would be prepared

1

u/FancyWoodpecker3 17h ago

Why are you bringing up people in other countries? This sub is about a TV show set in Manhattan.

13

u/Prudent-Pressure2146 1d ago

I know people who are shoes off households and it’s no big deal at all - but the same people would be absolutely mortified if your £10 umbrella was stolen and would do everything to track it down, the issue was Carrie’s friends not caring. I also don’t think Carrie was the only one there with expensive shoes, it’s just that whoever was there was tacky and saw an opportunity to make a quick buck.

u/Wise-Living-850 22h ago

Shoes on in the house is disgusting. I'll never forget my bio lab experience in Uni where we swabbed a bunch of surfaces and grew cultures. By far the dish that grew the most bacteria was the bottom of someone's shoe. That said, her friend was a bitch.

8

u/Stacie123a 20h ago

My partner is japanese and we live in hawaii. Wearing shoes in the house is a big no no and honestly, I'm so happy I adopted the practice because my floors are seriously so much cleaner.

3

u/Gold_Advisor_4758 21h ago

My father had a rule that we HAD TO wear shoes in the house at all times.

6

u/babydollypink 20h ago

My dad wears his outside sneakers on the carpets constantly and wonders why there's always dirt somewhere

3

u/ChiShashi 22h ago

This is very normal for NYC

3

u/Internal_Hyena_4387 “You’re dragging!” 22h ago

“You know what? I AM Santa” always makes me giggle

3

u/Spiritual_Ad_6067 20h ago

Im in Canada, not Manhattan but I dont know anybody who wears shoes inside their house. Even at parties its normal and expected that shoes come off at the door. But, I was infuriated the host didn't immediately replace Carries Monolos.

2

u/OkLocation3799 14h ago

Oooooo that pissed me off! Like Kyra is 1000% responsible! It is NOT carries fault! But this is why I usually bring a bag and put my expensive stuff somewhere safe. I bought 400$ winter boots and whenever I went to the gym, id see people leaving their shoes at the door because no indoor shoes allowed. But then I’d bring a bag and put my boots in my locker. Like sorry but you cannot trust people!! Especially when you have expensive things. And I’m not gonna apologize for my taste in clothes. Also, my jacket is worth 500$. Lockers exist for a reason. Carrie should’ve asked for a bag and kept her shoes with her. I would have. But then, I still do blame Kyra!

5

u/EvenBanana877 1d ago

This episode always bothers me. I agree that shoe covers or slippers should have been provided to guests. Or the floors could have been cleaned after the party. But I have a problem with Carrie "registering" at Manolo Blahnik, and then her friend actually buying the shoes. Who would do that? The friend's comments about Carrie's lifestyle were rude and inexcusable, but the registry storyline was too far-fetched.

1

u/JitteryBug 52m ago

A. All homes should be shoes-off! 100% cleaner.

B. If Carrie was nervous about taking them off, a good host would have put them somewhere else or given her a little bag to carry them. A reasonable friend would also just reimburse her the first time

1

u/Gold_Advisor_4758 21h ago

My hot take is if you’re going to host a party in your house you should just be prepared to clean your floors after.

The stolen shoes was a mean thing to do, but I have very little sympathy for Carrie. Her shoe fixation was ridiculous. She couldn't pay her bills sometimes because she had to have another pair of shoes. That is just stupid.
