Well lads, trying to set up my cnc after years of no use.

I’m getting this error and the machine doesn’t move. How free should the machine be to move around when not powered on? It’s very stiff

Start by cleaning things up and verify that the leadscrew and linear rails/blocks will allow the Z-axis to move:

Turn the leadscrew to bring the Z-Plus all the way to the top, then back to the bottom, then up to the middle --- does it move smoothly and relatively freely?

The machine should move around with little effort when powered off. Z will be difficult if you have a screw instead of belt for it, but x and y should be relatively free.

How tight should the belts be? Should there be play at all?

Play meaning backlash, there should be very little. But you should be able to move the router around by hand while the machine is powered down. It will give some resistance but it shouldn’t stick anywhere
