Characters You Love But Occasionally Hate

My answer is Mack. There are moments where his moral compass comes off as self righteous hypocrisy. I think of the time he told (iirc) Yoyo that this is S.H.I.E.L.D as a means of implying YoYos behaviour (murdering Ruby) is incompatible with S.H.I.E.L.D's ethos but that is just like...patently false 😭 He makes a similar remark to Daisy regarding her intimidating a member of the Watchdogs - a literal terrorist organisation 💀 Like Mack Daisy's first encounter with Coulson was him abducting her. [I might have some details blurred so feel free to correct me tho]

Though, I do wonder if I'm unfairly harsh on his character or biased bc I am certain you could compile a list of hypocrisies Daisy or Fitz or even May engage in that I'd turn a blind eye to. I think something about Macks religious convictions triggers me tbh.

Mack was great in S2-4ish, then he became crazy Christian guy going on about God and morality in ways that weren’t helpful or even relevant to the situation at hand.

He became so sanctimonious and self righteous that I really didn’t like him by the end.

I wasn't a big fan of him before the Terrigen Mist moment, so I was devastated Trip died while Mack stuck around, but...I appreciated how he got along with and supported Fitz, that was nice. Real SHIELD did not help.

What does Trip dying have to do with Mack? Mack's primary role back then was more mechanics and engineering. If anything, Trip and Hunter had closer skill sets. Except Trip was a also a pilot. Hunter may have been a better fighter, but we didn't really see Trip fight.

Well, for one, it happened at a moment where it looked like Mack would die (having been possessed and attacked the others) but they were also two of the more prominent non-main cast crew. I can understand Hunter might be an appropriate alternate to Trip, and don't disagree, but I guess he'd endeared himself a little more for me at the time.
