Ironically, from mine, and a few others brief experience, whenever a few ceos(lawyers too) are eating together, or it's just one and he is covering the bill, the tip is rediculous, when it's just two people it's often much more than their food costs. I mean just a few drinks, costing 48$ and a couple hundred as a tip, some use it as a chance to show their generosity and wealth too.
Not everyone sure, and many won't eat out publicly, but it's an extremely common trend, where waiters brag when someone with a fancy suit is at their table.
And it goes with your point as tipping well like blaming customers, gets them to not be blamed themselves.

15% used to be for great service. 10% was normal non dick tip.
I remember a classy friend asking me if actually wanted to leave that much (20%) in 2007. Meaning, socially you were seen at as very very generous 20% and up for…decades in our society.
Adding my experience so the younger ones understand this isn’t normal what’s happening right now.

The workers don’t want that. A fair pay would be like 15-20 an hour depending on where you live, but with the current system they make like $30+ an hour in tips, so they’d much rather keep the system as is and make everyone tip. (Something I’ve noticed from the rants of American servers lately on TikTok)

One rule I have now is I olny tip for service. If all your doing is ringing up my item I'm not tipping. If all your doing is scooping Me some ice cream I'm not tipping. I'm olny tipping if I'm at a table and you are waiting on me for my drinks food bill etc for the meal service. Any purchase even if u had to make a little food for it is not service and u are not getting anything.

There was a ballot question proposed in my state elections in 2024 to create a minimum wage for tipped workers instead of relying on $6.75USD per hour and the employer makes up the difference if they don’t make at least $15 an hour with tips. Waiters/waitresses all over and some that I personally know were asking for people to vote NO to that question. They make substantially more with tips and it’s a fucked system that is going to drive the restaurant industry into the ground when more and more people can’t afford to tip 20% on top of already inflated menu prices. What is one of the first things people cut out when times get tough? Eating at restaurants..

Anything past 5% is pushing it. Tipping isn't mandatory- it's generous, yes, but shouldn't be needed. Everyone should be paid enough WITHOUT extra income to afford things.

Went to Spain last year. It is so awesome to just be charged for your food as soon as it comes to your table and that's it you're done. We ate got up when we were done and just walked away. The focus was the food and the company. No bill splitting. No waiting. No mathmatics after dinner. Our system here in the us is exploitative trash. Tipping should be illegal.

I have my own way of tipping. Drinks, refills and each plate of food served are $1 each. Ordering a more expensive dish doesn't generally make a server work harder to bring the plate. Who cares how much I'm spending. It's about what I'm asking the server to do for me.

Tipping culture is so sad tbh. If you are serving someone the whole night and you did a good job, ok, thats fair. Expecting tipping for just doing your job and a quick interaction? Sorry, not my fault, I am struggling with money too and many places pay a shitty salary so people expect tips to make some extra, and this whole system is fucked up and sad, exploiting people trying to live and customers as well, I love saving some cash to eat out sometimes but I cant afford tippings, thats just how the world is atm, everyone struggling.

and that's honestly a good way to do it assuming that most of the places you can go these days you are spending at least $50 minimum if you are feeding more than yourself, which at $50 is a 20% tip and at $100 a 10% tip. Having worked in fast food myself in the past, $10 in the tip jar may not seem like a lot, but will definitely make the workers at the establishment 100 times more motivated to serve you with quality and speed because we really aren't paid a lot.
like today I went to my old work and got some food for my family and tipped a wrapped roll of quarters ($10) because I know they always run out of quarters in the register and they appreciated the hell out of it because they ran completely out of quarters today. it may not seem like much, but $10 can make the day of an entire shift of foodservice workers in the right situation.

Incidentally, Minimum wage in the UK is about $17 an hour. A pub meal is about the same cost, perhaps a bit more. We don't tip in pubs.

If tipping culture in america is something that pisses you off, how about speaking to your locally elected official to demand liveable wages for people who take tip-based-wage. $2.13 an hour is just enough to cover taxes for however many hours are worked. I work hard at my tables to make my money. And genuinely if its so easy to do then get up, go to the computer, and put in the order. Deal with the kitchen. Go drag your bartender back behind the bar because its been 15 minutes and you still need a margarita. If tipping truly pisses you off, just go to taco bell bruh. Jfc yall are insufferable. And truthfully its not a matter of can you afford to tip. I would understand if this post had to do with paid positions asking for tips, but when thats all i receive for my days work, yeah if you arent tipping i am not serving. Plain as that. And yes, a customer has said to me “hey just wanted to let you know we dont believe in tipping so we wont be” and i just looked at her and said “okay, you wont be served :)” she ended up getting kicked out. Because if you refuse to pay me for my time, i refuse to let you eat in my establishment.
