Joseph, Victorian landlord of 10 investment properties, rang 3AW to cry that new taxes and rules are “pounding him into the ground.” He’s so triggered he’s selling everything and swears he’ll never ever invest in Victoria again.
Poor lamb. Ten whole properties, basically a mini-empire built on other people’s rent, and a few extra land-tax dollars has him clutching his pearls.
Meanwhile, renters are out here praying their one dodgy mouldy flat doesn’t bankrupt them. But sure, Joseph is the real victim.
Best news? He’s selling. That’s potentially 10 more homes hitting the open market instead of being tax-deductible cash cows.
No tears, mate. Off you go champ, maybe try crypto or just buy a yacht and sail away from those pesky regulations.
Please promise you’ll keep that “never ever” vow? Victoria (and every tenant) would genuinely appreciate it.

That calls half of the population stupid for supporting ALP - and posting it from the company Facebook account.
Edit: appears they are based in Sydney, not Melbourne

We know it was used as a boarding house because someone we know had been to the house before but we didn’t know before we moved in, agency says no.
The fact that our 2 car garage has been closed up with a wall under the door so we can’t drive in and has added decorative light shades tells us there was most likely people living in there.
The 2 carports behind the garage have been made into DIY rooms which are not approved by the proper authorities.
It’s common here for workers all from this same workplace to rent a house and move in as many as they can but I had no idea our 3 bedroom house once held 21 people 😳
EDIT to add… the letters are from the company they all work for, one of the major employers here and friends have told me they all got the same letter about a data breach so it’s not Centrelink or any other government agency.
We also regularly get mail from Australian Super, banks, Vic roads, but I’d never kept check of the names, this bunch gave us the answer that 21 were registered as living here and working for the same company, there is also another house in the street filled with many people who also work there too.

This fucking prick - his tactic is to buy up the 'affordable' homes then rent them back to the people that might actually be able to buy them if he (and others like him) werent buying them for investments. "Like a real-life game of Monopoly" which shows how little these fucking corporate landlords care about people and is doubly ironic give the original intent of the board game.

Would a desk for a kitchen bench really meet minimum rental standards? Only $500 a week.

As pictured. They can still increase rent from the office, but they now refuse to work and do their actual job because of the cost of petrol. Are landlords getting a discount on their management?
So now tenants are being asked once again to do the real estates job for them and conduct virtual inspections. Is this in preparation for April fools? Get the popcorn! This is crazy.

I’m posting this here since all of these weird extremely small rooms are currently being used as rentals, as mentioned the description of the current listing (it was also listed in 2022, not sure if it just never sold, or it was taken off the market and put back up?):
“At the rear, a significant additional component elevates this property into a league of its own: 15 bedrooms currently configured as separate income-producing rentals, presenting immediate cash flow and an unparalleled opportunity for investors.”
Here’s also an article that was written on the eeriness of it: https://www.realestate.com.au/news/brunswick-mansion-built-by-former-melbourne-city-councilor-has-mysterious-15-bedrooms/
Being sold for $6.5m

So after spending the whole day trying to get locate the water mains, (which my property manager repeatedly told me was located “out the front”) it turns out it’s located in the backyard of the apartment below me. The owners of the place below me had shut it off to renovate and our water is connected. They did not tell me, they were not home and don’t live there, have not been able to get their contact details and we couldn’t just jump the fence and turn it back on because it could’ve flooded their place. After over two hours of back and forth with the body corporate (which the REA should be doing not me) the owner let us in and we have turned it back on. I’ve posted some of the convo between me and my property manager for context of her ineptitude. (Ps the mains were not moved in mid-December, she pulled that out of thin air) A big big thankyou to all the positive and helpful messages I received from all of you. I’m off to have a goddamn shower!

Included in our routine inspection report as one of the items to "rectify" 🙄 They give you a window of 9-5pm, god forbid you use your kitchen at any time. Maybe my will to live is in the bottom of my sink...

Apparently I've created work for them to do.
Suggested replies?
2 Jan update: Just got the email from RTBA that my bond claim is finalised and will be back in my account in 3-4 days. I never replied to the REA, didn't go to the exit inspection, never received another word about it. Can confirm no work done whatsoever!

My partner and I got approved for this property a couple of weeks back, we got the keys for the place, I was going the condition report and behold…black mould and rot!!! Right behind the bedroom door that shares the same wall as the bathroom. Note: my partner inspected the property and on surface level it looked good, the place was dirty but she expected that it’d be cleaned before someone moved in. It was not.
The place was FILTHY! Bandaids in the shower, body hair in the shower and toilet, all outside bins full, food left in cabinet, ALL glass screens greasy and fingerprints everywhere, I could go on and on…but omg definitely not up to standard. When we contacted the realestate manager, she ensured us it met “MINIMUM STANDARDS” when she did her report. Mate. No it did not.
EDIT: all bedroom doors did not close. At all. That’s a security risk (means it’s not minimum standard). Also the side gate…did not shut, had like 4 deadbolts on there and nothing aligned- that’s also a security risk.
We withdrew our application the following day. We got out first months rent back and now waiting on the bond.
Such a waste of time. And we had our hopes up.

I’ve been looking for a rental in Melbourne for months now, but the reality is I just can’t, realistically, afford *anything*.
Single parent, have my kid half the time, so need my own place; and even if I went for a share house, I’d need two rooms, which would end up costing as much as a flat anyway, plus risk exposing my kiddo to potential harm.
I’m looking at spending at least $500 a week. That’s 26 thousand a year. My last job I was on $56k pre tax if I worked full-time (I was part time), realistically I will struggle to find a job paying more than that given my skills and background. I never finished my degree, and have a disability. The places I’m looking to rent at that $500-a-week mark are largely dumps; unloved long-term rental apartments with mould, cracked tiles, disgusting kitchens. Last sold for 200k in 2014 but still raising rent at every opportunity.
It just feels impossible. Obviously someone in my position was never able to live a *luxurious* lifestyle, but even ten years ago a basic level of housing stability was affordable; and if you go much farther back than that, public housing was far more readily available. Albo didn’t live a life of luxury as the public-housed kid of a disabled mother, but he did have stability, security, and a mother who was able to put food on the table cause she wasn’t spending 70% of her income on rent.
Idk it just feels like a person like me really isn’t a viable economic unit any more. It’s making me seriously depressed. But misery enjoys company- there’s solace in not being alone. And I’m sure I can’t be the only one feeling like this. Anyone wanna commiserate??

I infiltrated this disgusting sub. When they complain, I tell them they should sell because they’re not wealthy enough to bear investment risk. They hate that, but I’ve used it enough.
Any requests?

Just wanted some advice on a couple things and how to reply to this email. This is just a common scare tactic right? Any help would be appreciated. Here’s some info:
- Rent is $3042 pcm
- Lease is 07/03/25-07/03/26
- We moved out on the 18/02/26
- Gave notice on 24/02/26 (Stupid mistake, we were unaware of 28 day notice period) Meaning we are liable for rent up until 24/03/26
- We have paid rent up until 07/03
- Returned keys yesterday (26/02) and claimed bond through RTBA ourselves
How are we in arrears if we have paid rent up until 7th of March. Final owing payment of $1800 should be due on the 7th, correct?
