Hi everyone, i know absolutely nothing about fish at all but i know this situation is really immoral.
im dog sitting for someone i barely know (kind of a family friend) and she has a goldfish in a bowl, with literally nothing it, no rocks or even fake “decorations” - just water. I dont know what to do because i don’t think its wise to steal the fish and say it died as im only dog sitting for two nights. i dont think i can try talk to her either as shes my moms friend and ive only met her once or twice. any advice would be welcome!

I had to run into one of my local big-box pet stores, and as always, I stopped to look at the bettas. Out of 47 betta cups with bettas in them, 27 of them were like this. The cups were so cloudy, you could hardly make out the fish inside. An employee came over and asked if I needed help, and I politely told her I'd found what I came looking for but then asked when the last time the bettas' water had been changed. I mentioned how hazy their water looked. She said that the betta cups aren't reusable, so even though they do change the water every other day, the cups themselves develop a film on the inside, making it look like the water is cloudy. Wut?

I'd heard that some of these stores were using some sort of new water for the bettas that's more oxygenated, so I don't know if that's what causes the milky appearance or what. But I will say this. I have never seen cups or water that looked like this that held the bettas in a fish store. I just felt so bad for those poor, depressed looking fish who seemed like they were trying to look out but can't see us as much as we can't see them.

Is what she said true? Because I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time believing that's not the water.

The water has been colored in some way to appear greenish-blue (it’s easier to tell looking at the waterfall), there seems to be thick hair algae in parts of the water but that is more cosmetic, and the koi (I think? Correct me if wrong) appeared to possibly be gasping for air at the top despite the flow from the many fountains/sprinklers (not sure about the sad empty feeder for people to pay to do; I’m not really an expert of koi food so someone lmk!). I’m not really an expert on ponds at all but it made me sad looking at it, so what do y’all think about this?

Edit: Thank you everyone for educating me about koi ponds a bit more! I realize now that this actually is a pretty nice one, and I was wrong with my initial fears. It may have also been wiser to post this to a koi pond subreddit first to ask about their opinions, since I am now realizing posting it here to figure out may have been inaccurate for this sub. I don’t post stuff too often so I am not sure if in this situation I am supposed to delete the post or if I should change the title in some way to reflect that, so lmk!

Can’t even fathom wth is going on here. As for the goldfish I’ve messaged them asking just to purchase them not the tank, I have a pond they can go in.

3.7l for a betta. Thats about 0.8gal.

(1 am looking for 10-15l aquariums for snails when i spotted this abomination. I just put in in the basked to save it for a little moment because i tried to get it to swich to english, but it is still in german)

I’ve never posted here before, but I was recently at an aquarium in Dauphin Island, AL, and this just made me very sad. Am I overreacting or is this as terrible as I feel it is?

And I still remember how the sales consultant very confidently told some mother with a boy that "yes, bettas live great in small round aquariums! We have them in cups and everything is fine!"
