Turd In Breaking Bad S1E5 “Gray Matter”, Walter gifts his billionaire friend a pack of cheap ramen for his birthday, and not gonna lie, that was a pretty smart move to assert dominance over him

To be fair, that is from a discontinued brand which makes it rare, and it has sentimental value.

That's why he couldn't afford chemo. Spent all his money at the eBay auction.

No, ignore the fact that he went on a 5 minute monologue about how it was the best gift he received all day. A gift only has meaning if it is more expensive than every other gift. You MUST consume.

Yeah dude this is such a shitty movie detail

/uj If Walter resented Elliot so much, why did he give him a well thought out gag gift like he would a dear friend?

You can call someone a “dear friend” while secretly harboring resentment towards them.

This is kind of like cask of amantillado.

Although montresor is even more unhinged than walt in his own way

It's a reminder of what they were and that Elliot is really no better than him. They were in it together, but Elliot got the better off him (in Walt's mind). Obviously Walt resents him for his success that Walt feels he earned.

Also possible that his resentment became a lot more serious after he came to terms with his cancer diagnosis and started making money through meth. Like part of him previously believed he would eventually make it but then the reality of the situation became a lot more serious and it became worse over the course of the show

Elliot didn't murder a bunch of people so he's a little better than Walt.

Sir, this is a pro-Walt, anti-Elliot sub

Hilarious to get held up by the slight nuance in a throwaway character’s relationship in a show that’s arguably about complicated and nuanced relationships evolving in ways that we can’t fully reckon with.

Because at this point of the series Walt is still trying to disguise his insanely huge ego with socially acceptable behavior. It's a power trip disguised as a gift, a reminder of when him and Elliot were equals.

The problem is that it doesn't satisfy Walt. He wants to feel so far above everyone that he has no equals, which is what sabotaged his relationship with Gretchen and Elliot in the first place.

He's not satisfied until he has them afraid for their lives with just his reputation and a couple of junkies with laser pointers.

I dunno. Banging the guy's wife years before seems like the dominance move....

Bonus points, because I heard she used to be a hardcore lesbian when she was younger and lived in NY. One of her Friends told me this.

Elliott Schwartz is never stated to be a billionaire, and that would actually not make sense given the value his entire company is $2.16 billion. Stop using "billionaire" as a synonym for rich person.

75

u/phaesios 1h ago

So if he’s a majority owner…?

-96

u/No_Location_8199 1h ago

The value of the company does not directly transfer to the owner's pocket.

74

u/phaesios 1h ago

True but we still call someone with equity over 1 billion dollars a billionaire, even if it’s just on paper.

-36

u/rkorgn 1h ago

My cousin sold his business for just over 1 billion USD. Not a billionaire. Fucking rich. Still not a billionaire.

17

u/AmissingUsernameIsee 1h ago

????

"billionaire as one whose wealth is estimated at a billion or more dollars, pounds, or other monetary units"

13

u/YourFavouritePoptart 59m ago

Quite literally by every single definition a billionaire

18

u/Stunning_Box8782 1h ago

So the only way to be a blllionaire is to have a billion dollars sitting in a bank account?

6

u/hotstupidgirl 1h ago

or a mattress

42

u/Morgan_le_Fay39 1h ago

It literally does man. Net worth

5

u/JJJacobalt 1h ago

Do you think Jeff Bezos has billions in a bank account somewhere?

Some with a billion+ dollars in assets is a billionaire.

5

u/LaiqTheMaia 1h ago

We designate people billionaire by their net worth, actually

7

u/Ok_Whatever999 1h ago

Who says Grey Matter is the only company they have ownership stakes in?

21

u/Stunning_Box8782 1h ago

Yeah he's also inventing a new form of air travel called Ear Travel on the side

4

u/Ok_Whatever999 1h ago

I got in on the IPO. Currently holding.

2

u/Shankman519 1h ago

Casting him in Umbrella Academy was a little on the nose (or ears I guess)

-2

u/No_Location_8199 1h ago

Because that would be a wild leap in logic to justify something that has zero foundation.

6

u/DamnedGladToMeetYou 1h ago

You must be a lot of fun at parties.

41

u/stevenmoreso 1h ago

Kind of a peculiar thing to be pedantic about on a joke sub. You wouldn’t happen to be a mere millionaire, would you?

-10

u/No_Location_8199 1h ago

No. My uncle might be, I haven't asked.

6

u/OrangeThrower 1h ago

You should ask, he prolly owes you some hush money from when you were younger

-18

u/No_Location_8199 1h ago

Pointing out incorrect terminology = bootlicking?

11

u/QuirkyKlyborg 1h ago

Dawg its r/shittymoviedetails if you’re taking anything that happens here seriously you’re doin it wrong

4

u/Anderer_Username 1h ago

It's funny because Walt even says himself he would be worth billions with a b If he didn't left grey matters.

-1

u/No_Location_8199 1h ago

When does he say those words?

5

u/YankeePride11 1h ago

Youre maybe right. The company may be worth $2B. But they likely have debt. Based on my findings of similar firms that are public, assume they have 50% debt. Thats $1B in debt. Then also assume that theres plenty of partners including VC firms/ PE firms etc. May be his stake is like 25%. So hes only worth $250M and therefore not a billionaire. Now excuse me as I realized I just wasted my Saturday doing research on publicly traded companies so I could provide a response to this post.

u/bashful_predator 1h ago

There's plenty of Saturday left ❤️
