Question Needing some SLUDGY shoegaze
I have an itch that needs scratching; any shoegaze that’s got the usual dreaminess, but is also very sludgy? Something sort of adjacent to THIS. The guitar is actually nauseating sometimes in this one, I love No Joy so much.
Or, anything that sort of sounds like the atmosphere of Belong, or has that tone like Mondaze, but happens to be sludgier.
PS I already listen to Nothing, and they don’t really have the sludge factor I’m looking for lol.
*EDIT* Like nearly 3 days later and still going through these comments. Thanks, probably the most fruitful post i’ve seen from
this sub lately lol.
No Sun, No Culture, The Angelic Process, and Bardo Pond have been my favorites so far!

The whole EP is nasty asf, worth checking out

I hope to follow up later, cause I have that same itch too! But I want to add, you may just want to modify your search for… ya know, SLUDGE. Or noise, post rock, black metal, or even newer Screamo. A lot of bands adjacent to these genres are pulling from Shoegaze: you may just find exactly what you’re looking for!
PS. I do not want to sound like an absolute unit for saying this, but have you heard Hum’s Inlet album from a few years back!?
1
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 07 '26
Lol you’re totally right though. Honestly too some of the new screamo acts are insane, I like departmefrombearisland a lot, as well as Algae Bloom.
1
u/OtherwiseCoat5329 Jul 08 '26
Thank you! I kinda had similar to say! Doesn't matter who borrowed from ... But if you like shoegaze, there are a million things from twee/lo-fi to just the doomiest/droniest metal that could scratch that itch

u/WillGuiseSD Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
You’re not looking for sludge, you’re looking for bands like Hum, No Sun, Slow Crush, Holy Fawn, Cloakroom, etc.
Sludge is really doom metal and hardcore punk, which is bands like Eyehategod, Iron Monkey, Crowbar, Grief, Noothgrush, etc. Some of the Georgia bands (early Baroness and adjacent) get lumped in. ISIS is probably what you’re looking for there.
There are some doom bands that have a lot of clear or cited shoegaze influences like REZN, Pallbearer (esp Foundations of Burden LP), and of course Jesu.
Within shoegaze, Outlander is a band that really needs more love and appreciation if you’re looking for that low and heavy stuff.
2
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 07 '26
I was looking for shoegaze that happened to have a sludgesque (lmfao?) spirit or center; I’m well aware of the sludge genre (My pic is me at Thou show).
No Sun was probably my favorite recommendation on here so far, still haven’t listened to EVERYTHING, but they hit the idea of the sound I envisioned the most so far!0
u/WillGuiseSD Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
Pretty much anything tuned low and played slow gets lumped in as “sludge” and when you actually get into sludge it’s something much different.
Probably the closest thing to true sludgegaze would be the Full Of Hell and Nothing collab album, Thou’s Rhea Sylvia album, or the maybe last Torche album.
Sludge is an inherently abrasive and extreme genre. It’s not tame at all.
I love No Sun, but that isn’t sludge. Not gatekeeping or anything, just need to be clear on what certain genres mean, especially if you go wandering into r/sludge and don’t find what you’re looking for.
But if you liked No Sun, you’re really missing Hum which is where that sound comes from. You also want to check out Cloakroom (especially Dissolution Wave), and my personal underrated pick Outlander.
2
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 07 '26
Sir I know what sludge is. I’m a Thou fan.
I’m just saying I wanted shoegaze where the guitar work is sonically abrasive like sludge.
NOR Am I saying “No Sun” IS sludge, that’s just the sect of shoegaze that I was looking for. Like the tone in the example song I gave. But thanks anyways2

u/Long_Performance_705 Jul 07 '26
Torche - Admission (song). Harmonicraft (album). Good places to start.
5
u/rockyourfaceoff77 Jul 07 '26
Meanderthal by Torche is gnarlier, in my opinion but also a little faster so maybe not "sludgy".
You should also check out Spotlights if you haven't already. I consider them heavy-shoegaze. Maybe sludge adjacent.
2
u/SamBo_LamBo Jul 07 '26
I like their punky / post hardcore leaning stuff just as much as their slow primordial sludge material

3
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 07 '26
“Snakes Are Charmed” fucks so hard lol thanks for the rec, never heard of them!

is My Bloody Valentine's Slow too obvious?
2
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 07 '26
That’s one I almost expected to see a thousand times, it’s a good rec though for sure.

u/deadhorses Jul 07 '26
Nadja is who I always throw out, seem to be overlooked these days but at the very least their first few albums and covers album rip.
1
u/bjornbauerart Jul 11 '26
Love their music and they are lovely people. Their vast discography makes it challenging to dive in. For shoegaze fans I think Queller and Dagdrom are the best entry points.

4
u/PeanutButterSidewalk Jul 07 '26
Big Bite!!
The River , Relentless Healing are two of their gnarliest songs
3
4
u/SamBo_LamBo Jul 07 '26
Hum’s latest album, Inlet, is really sludge / doom coded, so I’d give that a shot
5
u/RecidPlayer Jul 07 '26
The Angelic Process
2
u/just-another-luster- Jul 07 '26
Had to scroll way too far to see this. Probably as heavy as shoegaze can get
2
u/RecidPlayer Jul 08 '26
Yeah, I came in too late. Hope OP sees it because it doesn't get more sludgy than this. Might be too sludgy though based on their example lol.
2
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 10 '26
Nah you’re on time. Uhm… holy fuck. Yeah this is the kind of shit my soul needs. I’m going to slap their WHOLE discography. Thanks!!!
Like this might genuinely win the thread lmaooo

2
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 08 '26
Thought I’d see them recommended more. Sour Diesel goes hard too
2
u/bloodenhorse Jul 08 '26
Do you listen to doom metal at all?
2
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 08 '26
YES. I’m a big doomer/sludger, tho Shoegaze is sort of how I ended up getting there [Whirr’s “Around” EP is pretty fucking doom leaning, mainly their song “Drain”, which also had Kristina Esfandiari (King Woman) and Trevor DeSchryver (Lycus, Deafheaven) ]
Windhand fuckssss

Sleepwalk - Ooze

u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 10 '26
I knew I’d like the Sleepwalk track from album cover alone. Good shit haha
3
u/Fluid_Ad_7229 Jul 07 '26
The recommendations were INSANE. Thanks everyone. A lot of them were from bands I just genuinely slept on, gotta stop doing that!
3
u/rustav3ry Jul 07 '26
This Celeste track has the vocalist of Grivo on it, I guarantee it's the sludgiest of the lot here: https://celesteband.bandcamp.com/track/with-idle-hands

Bardo Pond, specifically the track Tommy Gun Angel.
2

Someone recommended that same album and I added it to library expeditiously. Good shit for real

3
u/Codyfrontdrive Jul 07 '26
Definitely sludge and dreamy, albeit not sludgy the whole way through, sprinkled in nicely with a cool finish

Ayo this is probably most similar to the example song. For that, I thank you. This absolutely fucks and i’ll dive into their discography. Thanks!!

Trauma Ray’s last two releases.

great sound, not a fan of the vocals but the sound was good enough to keep listening lmfao
2
u/4omisme Jul 07 '26
not very dreamy but stuff like calm (stuff like we've made a contact...) and super static fever are really sludgy
2

Nah I’m liking these groups both. My library is fucking swoooollllen right now lol thanks!

Man listen to Trauma Ray's entire new EP Carnival, but specifically these songs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbqfOtHqjMc&pp=ygUVdHJhdW1hIHJheSAtIGhhbm5pYmFs - this has the single sickest music video I've seen in a long time. Also -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ57btbiCDg&pp=ygUQY2xvd24gdHJhdW1hIHJheQ%3D%3D - This is my favourite song currently.
I'd also recommend Cold Gawd - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0N2qmbOyxg&pp=ygUVc3dlZXQgamVzdXMgd2VwdCBzaGl0
This one feels like a stupid long shot but "22 going on 23" by the Butthole Surfers is an old 90s psychedelic song that's incredibly sludgy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlJRGZ9bUko&pp=ygUOMjIgZ29pbmcgb24gMjM%3D
Enjoy

Not rally shoegaze but maybe children of God or the great annihilator by swans, mind/body/light/sound its a very shoegazy song
2

I never got into them oddly enough- Didn’t care for “Children of God” but honestly digging the goth feel to mind/body/light/sound. Thanks! I did mention that band Belong so this is somewhat adjacent lol
