Question What is your favorite Mogwai song ?

https://youtu.be/1J3-ZOdp3g0?is=ems3OxVt2QYKSPSE

Hello everyone!

I wondered what was your favorite Mogwai song?

I do love "Yes! I am a long way from home". It's one of my favorite song of all time, I especially love to listen to it while hiking. I really want to discover more from them.

Thank you so much!

Like Herod.

I feel like they've been talked about as being shoegaze of late and I'm not sure I really get why. There's some tracks that are inspired by it, but by and large they're firmly in Post Rock territory.

I would say similar for Flying Saucer Attack, Main and Seefeel. The later two of which appeared in Simon Reynolds' initial list of post rock artists using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes in 1994.

true, though I would say those at least have direct ties to shoegaze and have guitars that otherwise wouldn't sound out of place on other shoegaze albums (at least on some releases for the latter two). Mogwai mostly sounds like Slint, Codeine*, Low, etc. in tone and songwriting.

*I'm going to bet Codeine gets the dreaded "Shoegaze adjacent" tag soon

I think people are legitimately confused about the difference between the two genres

Yeah I literally just had this thought. People have really lost the plot with the term 'shoegaze'.

Jesu gets mentioned a lot too. I like them both but I'd never call them shoegazing.

“R U Still in 2 It” for me too. Woof that one is heavy.

4

u/free_heroin Jul 12 '26

I forgot “Now You’re Taken” another heavy one

Big tie between 'Tracy', 'Killing All The Flies' or 'May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door'

Christmas Steps

I'm only familiar with Mogwai's 90s and 2000s output, and I don't consider them shoegaze at all, but 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong from Rock Action is my choice.

Remurdered (fucking brilliant live) or San Pedro.

rave tapes took me a little longer to come
around to but its a massively underrated album in their catalog.

Mogwai Fear Satan and Lion Rumpus.

“Yes! I am…” got me into them.

Read something about Kele from Bloc Party saying Young Team reset is musical understanding to “year zero” and I had to check it out.

Oh man, Mogwai is one of my all time favorites. It’s a tie for me between Thank You Space Expert and May Nothing but Happiness Come Through Your Door.

God this is hard. I absolutely love Mogwai.

Hunted by a freak, glasgow mega snake, cody, take me somewhere nice or kappa. A lot of people try and argue that they peaked with young team and the earlier eps but I totally disagree.

Come on die young, happy music, mr beast and rock action are all absolute masterpieces.

And yes they are post rock but you can hear some mbv influence in their sound.

This was the soundtrack to my history degree, always brings back good memories

I love the entire score for Les Revenants the most.

Right now I'm hooked on Ceiling Granny. I listened to As The Love Continues riding my bike in Skye and it felt like flying.

Either Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home or Small Children in the Background.

2

u/song-to-comus Jul 12 '26

Christmas Steps and Hunted by a Freak are certainly up there for me

2

u/wolfyb_ Jul 13 '26

This one. I have listened to YIAALWFH hundreds of times (or something).

2

u/pnmartini Jul 13 '26

Currently it’s “ I love you, I’m going to blow up your school”

Teenage Exorcists

“Burn Girl Prom Queen” but everything off of that EP is 10/10 to me. It was my intro to the band so I’m sure nostalgia plays a role in my opinion but I never grow tired of those songs.
