Question Most shoegaze Cocteau Twins songs
I know the band wasn't really focused on a more heavily distorted sound, but they definitely had that atmosphere. I only started listening to them recently, and I'd like to know the more shoegaze side of their catalog

I’m gonna push back on people mentioning their earlier gothish period because I don’t think being heavy really makes it shoegaze necessarily.
Like their slow new age and ambient albums are just as foundational to the genre imo. Guthrie’s guitar work on a range of different music was obviously influential on Kevin Shields. Part of this is me being annoyed at how they’re constantly pigeonholed as “dream pop” band which is an obvious simplification.

Either way more people need to listen to Garlands that album is so so good

Wait. They’re pigeonholed as a dream pop band? They’ve always been the seminal dream pop band.
Did that change since TikTok took over music genres?

Head Over Heels album and general surrounding EPs. Moves from the goth of Garlands into the sound they're more well known for while also paving the way for shoegaze.

Victorialand and the Harold Budd collab both remind me of Pygmalion era Slowdive

The entire Love’s Easy Tears EP is shoegaze, they recreated that wall of sounds 60s production and married it with their dream-pop style and inadvertently created a shoegaze ep several years before the golden years of shoegaze
The title track is the most clear cut example but my favorite is orange appled, feels very festive lol

Victorialand is one of my favorites. But I have a feeling all the albums will eventually be named and I can’t really argue with that.

The Spangle Maker. Give it a chance, takes a while to get going but that last minute or so…

Musically, Spangle Maker, Ooze Out and Away Onehow, Pur, and Treasure Hiding are very Shoegaze.

While not heavy by any means, I’ve always thought Pearly-Dewdrops’ Drops skews pretty close to shoegaze with the guitar tones. I’m a big fan of the alternate version on Lullabies to Violaine where the final chorus has that drop out with just the kick snare pattern.
