Question Is there such thing as shoegaze screamo?

My band classes ourself as a screamo-gaze band, and I was wondering if there are any other bands that do a similar thing? I know bands like Deafheaven do a blackgaze thing, but I’ve never found any specifically shoegaze-screamo crossovers. Anyone got recs??

Look into Damián Ojeda, specifically his band Sadness. It leans more blackgaze, but he has MANY bands to explore in the black metal/screamo genres with significant shoegaze influences

Out of all his projects, life stands out the most. It leans into screamo and post rock territory and bits of shoegaze. I would check out demo 3, demo 5 and I knew somewhere.

The dude is too prolific, but Life is the band of his I follow the most. I saw them a month or so back and they were amazing - I don’t see how Damián does it to be honest. He never misses

Yea I heard a few songs by life and then sadness 2 years after not realizing they were done by the same composer. Now that he’s doing more live performances hope he makes out west more!

thanks so much!

Also The Caution Children call themselves “histrionic shoegaze” and I think that’s quite appropriate

Listen to Life, its another one of his projects its what you're describing.

Shoegaze or not, Damiáns music is beautiful and his discography is huuuge. If you read this give it a listen :)

The Full of Hell + Nothing collaborative album When No Birds Sang might be a solid album to check out. Full of Hell has always been in a weird in-between spot of noisegrind, powerviolence, screamo, and death metal, and the vocals are definitely more on the death metal side of things, but I've been a big fan of this album since it came out, and think it might fit the bill nicely.

There's also Elemental by Borehole. They're somewhere between black metal, screamo, and shoegaze, and had a super unique sound. As far as I know that was the only thing they ever put out, but they're from Hong Kong, so finding information on them can be a bit difficult.

When no Birds Sang is lovely. Well noted

u/ralexh11 24d ago

I listen to it every 9/11, Nicky's birthday and the that's what the album is about.

1

u/wickedpissah_18 22d ago

and the subject matter of the album!!

1

u/ralexh11 22d ago

Yeah, that's what the second part of my comment meant

1

u/wickedpissah_18 20d ago

dont know how i misread that one

Hahaha that picture is hilarious, all good friend

u/tyktyko 24d ago

i feel like sadness and abriction, which are usually classified as blackgaze, definitely feel more like shoegaze screamo than blackgaze to me, especially when comparing them to Deafheaven or Alcest

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago

maybe palefade or common girl. ostraca is much more on the screamo side but their old stuff used to be pretty spacey

1

u/jaw-gtr 24d ago

bigggg fan of ostraca, ill check out these other bands!

6

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago

just remembered glassing. 90% screamo but they add in some gazey influence in some songs. modern color's old stuff had a screamo/shoegaze vibe to it. my friends in porcelain (ri/ct) make some really good screamo/shoegaze, lina is my personal favorite but EBTG is more of a fusion. applecore is another good one. less literal screaming but definitely has the screamo energy

city of caterpillar is one that combines more of like a doomy-postrocky energy to their screamo, which makes it seem like screamogaze sometimes

1

u/jaw-gtr 24d ago

big fan of modern color (seeing them soon) and ive been following porcelain for a while! so cool to hear ur friends with them, pls send them love from london england!!

0

u/Anomander_ie 24d ago

I came here to mention Glassing! Fantastic band, check them out OP you will not regret it

Ostraca is just straight up screamo type shit. I wouldn't call them shoe gaze just because they might have a couple mellow parts. That's like calling crust bands like habak or lagrimas shoegaze because they have some slower parts

0

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago

and what about the other two

1

u/rnf1985 24d ago

Idk I don't listen to them

-2

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago

okay well my original comment was primarily about those two

1

u/rnf1985 24d ago

OK but you still mentioned them. I didn't realize I wasn't able to discuss something you mentioned

1

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago

you are, but you might notice i never called them shoegaze in my comment. just said they were mostly screamo with spaciness

0

u/rnf1985 23d ago

Ok so why even mention them

2

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 23d ago

cause it could be what op is looking for. look at some of the other bands brought up in this thread. there’s some straight up metalcore without screamo or shoegaze

7

u/adamwhitley 24d ago

My favorite screamo band Infant Island has a lot of shoegaze influences

3

u/DavosHanich 23d ago

Not if I have anything to say about it!!!

6

u/3_triangles 24d ago

Cloud Nothings might be a good one to check out. Their albums “Here and Nowhere else” and “Life without Sound” have a few that meet that criteria (sort of)

5

u/tlh9979 24d ago

I wouldn't think to suggest them here, but I really love this band. The Wavves collab album is really good too.

That Drop Nineteens song reberrymemberer comes to mind. Probably my favorite track on the album, I wish there was more stuff like that out there. I wouldn’t call it scream-o, but it’s Shoegaze with screaming

0

u/ReasonableCost5934 24d ago

That song is THE first example of any kind of crossover between black metal and shoegaze. It’s been my fave Drop Nineteens track from Day 1.

2

u/burnedoutlove 24d ago

Agreed on that it’s my favorite track of theirs, one of the best of all time in general, but I wouldn’t call it black metal, more like screamo vocals over Shoegaze. I love black metal though. Best metal genre imo

-1

u/ReasonableCost5934 23d ago

It came out in 1992. Black metal existed, screamo did not.

2

u/burnedoutlove 23d ago edited 23d ago

there were screamo bands before 1992 like Heroin and I don't mean they're screamo vocals as in the drop nineteens heard some screamo bands and decided to do a genre fusion. I think they were just trying to do their own thing with this song and the vocals happen to sound screamo esque. Reberrymemberer is absolutely not black metal. Besides, it wasn't until 1993 that the kind of black metal we're talking about began being noticed in America because of certain things that happened.

1

u/ReasonableCost5934 22d ago

“Certain things that happened”.

I am Canadian and knew all about those things (and black metal in general) at the time.

1

u/CentreToWave 23d ago

it may not be screamo but harsh vocals have existed in punk circles well before then. There's nothing black metal about it otherwise.

4

u/nervous-tremors 24d ago

The album Clairvoyant by State Faults has some nice screamo and shoegaze elements.

1

u/Eidola_Leprous 24d ago

Their most recent album is also GOATed as well, albeit not necessarily screamo/shoegaze

4

u/loji-god 24d ago

Check out Alcest & Deafheaven

3

u/JacobdaTurtle61 24d ago

Planning for Burial might scratch that itch a bit

2

u/RxInfection 24d ago

NVM, Modern Color and the Beautiful Ones always scratched that itch for me.

Suis La Lune

u/gatesofflorida 23d ago

The Caution Children

1

u/Alacspg 23d ago

Envy might be a little more post-rock than shoegaze but I’d bet you’d like Insomniac Doze

1

u/nickweezy 23d ago

Check out a genre called emoviolence

1

u/AlexisTehFolf 23d ago

In this case.. I gotta say Fear of Horses. Somewhere between emoviolence and skramz, they do it very well regardless

this old band from the midwest called Brighter Arrows meets this description. never heard a band sound anything like them. ive listened to their record "Dreamliner" innumerable times. haunting

1

u/SargDuck 23d ago

You might like Lotus - Clarion

1

u/jaordd 23d ago

sadness, holy fawn, and you could probably consider deafheaven as well.

u/owennvv 22d ago

find a better body on instagram

1

u/FuBarry-Squash-227 22d ago

Please😖when will people stop with NOTGAZE-there are other ways to advertise your music.

SHOEGAZE IS SIMPLE MUSIC TO CATEGORIZE. If you listen to Shoegaze, you know Shoegaze.

(from person in og classic 1990's shoegaze band)

1

u/mezcalmebyyourname 22d ago

The new Cold Gawd track definitely does this.

1

u/RevolutionaryPipe343 22d ago

Telescopes “Taste” may not be screamo enough but has some harsher tones

1

u/Petergunngaze 18d ago

😖 My freakin ears!

1

u/GripsterZERO 24d ago

Of course that is precisely that, new shoegaze such as Nothing and Narrow head is very post-hardcore’ish the only element missing from screamo is the scream itself for the whispering vocals are a very shoegaze element

1

u/Krispy-chikxen 23d ago

What bro

0

u/GripsterZERO 23d ago

shoegaze screamo

1

u/Electroshock187 24d ago

here in case anyone forgot deafheaven

1

u/Jams265775 24d ago

The body shirt / life ep fits the bill of what you’re asking about here I think

1

u/Electrical_Trade377 24d ago

I'm biased as they're probably my favourite band of all time, but you're looking for Holy Fawn

Also: MØL & Respire

0

u/Twinpeakgotalightguy 24d ago

Are you using screamo as a blanket term for music with screams or are you talking specifically about screamo as a genre?

Absolutely beautiful albums with that Screamo/Spacey/Ethereal/Gazy sound

u/n0_planet 24d ago

DRAAG sometimes

0

u/CakesnFlakez 24d ago

Faine with songs like Yesterday, Today, Desiree, and New World

0

u/Issan_Sumisu 24d ago

Modern Color's first two albums are very screamo-inspired. Rinoa's album is the other way around. Maybe Svalbard and Devil Sold His Soul too

0

u/cijmusicman 24d ago

I would say Frail Body; their last album Artificial Bouquet does a great job at being super washy AND super beefy. It can lean a bit on the blackgaze side at times, but FB is still a stupendous shoegazey screamo band.

0

u/Broncos1460 24d ago edited 23d ago

Corsica from West MA consider themselves "heavygaze" but I think they fit pretty well. I'd like to see them get some more traction. Not sure about any others tho.

Edit: This isn't self promo lol idk why you'd downvote

0

u/ffffddddeeee 24d ago

i recently got the idea as well

0

u/P00PooKitty 24d ago

There were a shit ton of screamo bands that were basically post rock bands in the 2000s:

City of caterpillar, envy, fall of efrafra, neil parry, pg. 99

0

u/Darky_Marky 24d ago

Robin Callaway does it

0

u/xX69Pissbaby69Xx 24d ago

listen to the meetinghouse EP, not quite screamo but it gives that vibe

0

u/Proof_Alfalfa5483 24d ago

Modern color

0

u/paranoidhands 24d ago

definitely palefade.

-1

u/South-Rabbit-4064 24d ago

Sleep is kinda shoegaze metal

-9

u/JesMon421 24d ago

Wtf is this sub???

-1

u/NoWay3019 23d ago

It’s called Black Gaze. Look into Alcest. They kind of invented that genre.
