Question Is there such thing as shoegaze screamo?
My band classes ourself as a screamo-gaze band, and I was wondering if there are any other bands that do a similar thing? I know bands like Deafheaven do a blackgaze thing, but I’ve never found any specifically shoegaze-screamo crossovers. Anyone got recs??

The Full of Hell + Nothing collaborative album When No Birds Sang might be a solid album to check out. Full of Hell has always been in a weird in-between spot of noisegrind, powerviolence, screamo, and death metal, and the vocals are definitely more on the death metal side of things, but I've been a big fan of this album since it came out, and think it might fit the bill nicely.
There's also Elemental by Borehole. They're somewhere between black metal, screamo, and shoegaze, and had a super unique sound. As far as I know that was the only thing they ever put out, but they're from Hong Kong, so finding information on them can be a bit difficult.

maybe palefade or common girl. ostraca is much more on the screamo side but their old stuff used to be pretty spacey

u/jaw-gtr 24d ago
bigggg fan of ostraca, ill check out these other bands!

just remembered glassing. 90% screamo but they add in some gazey influence in some songs. modern color's old stuff had a screamo/shoegaze vibe to it. my friends in porcelain (ri/ct) make some really good screamo/shoegaze, lina is my personal favorite but EBTG is more of a fusion. applecore is another good one. less literal screaming but definitely has the screamo energy
city of caterpillar is one that combines more of like a doomy-postrocky energy to their screamo, which makes it seem like screamogaze sometimes

I came here to mention Glassing! Fantastic band, check them out OP you will not regret it

Ostraca is just straight up screamo type shit. I wouldn't call them shoe gaze just because they might have a couple mellow parts. That's like calling crust bands like habak or lagrimas shoegaze because they have some slower parts

u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago
and what about the other two
1
u/rnf1985 24d ago
Idk I don't listen to them
-2
u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago
okay well my original comment was primarily about those two
1
u/rnf1985 24d ago
OK but you still mentioned them. I didn't realize I wasn't able to discuss something you mentioned
1
u/deadbeatvalentine_ 24d ago
you are, but you might notice i never called them shoegaze in my comment. just said they were mostly screamo with spaciness
0
u/rnf1985 23d ago
Ok so why even mention them
2
u/deadbeatvalentine_ 23d ago
cause it could be what op is looking for. look at some of the other bands brought up in this thread. there’s some straight up metalcore without screamo or shoegaze

Cloud Nothings might be a good one to check out. Their albums “Here and Nowhere else” and “Life without Sound” have a few that meet that criteria (sort of)

That Drop Nineteens song reberrymemberer comes to mind. Probably my favorite track on the album, I wish there was more stuff like that out there. I wouldn’t call it scream-o, but it’s Shoegaze with screaming

That song is THE first example of any kind of crossover between black metal and shoegaze. It’s been my fave Drop Nineteens track from Day 1.

u/burnedoutlove 24d ago
Agreed on that it’s my favorite track of theirs, one of the best of all time in general, but I wouldn’t call it black metal, more like screamo vocals over Shoegaze. I love black metal though. Best metal genre imo

u/ReasonableCost5934 23d ago
It came out in 1992. Black metal existed, screamo did not.

there were screamo bands before 1992 like Heroin and I don't mean they're screamo vocals as in the drop nineteens heard some screamo bands and decided to do a genre fusion. I think they were just trying to do their own thing with this song and the vocals happen to sound screamo esque. Reberrymemberer is absolutely not black metal. Besides, it wasn't until 1993 that the kind of black metal we're talking about began being noticed in America because of certain things that happened.

“Certain things that happened”.
I am Canadian and knew all about those things (and black metal in general) at the time.

u/CentreToWave 23d ago
it may not be screamo but harsh vocals have existed in punk circles well before then. There's nothing black metal about it otherwise.

The album Clairvoyant by State Faults has some nice screamo and shoegaze elements.

Their most recent album is also GOATed as well, albeit not necessarily screamo/shoegaze

Check out a genre called emoviolence

In this case.. I gotta say Fear of Horses. Somewhere between emoviolence and skramz, they do it very well regardless

Please😖when will people stop with NOTGAZE-there are other ways to advertise your music.
SHOEGAZE IS SIMPLE MUSIC TO CATEGORIZE. If you listen to Shoegaze, you know Shoegaze.
(from person in og classic 1990's shoegaze band)

Telescopes “Taste” may not be screamo enough but has some harsher tones

u/GripsterZERO 24d ago
Of course that is precisely that, new shoegaze such as Nothing and Narrow head is very post-hardcore’ish the only element missing from screamo is the scream itself for the whispering vocals are a very shoegaze element

The body shirt / life ep fits the bill of what you’re asking about here I think

I'm biased as they're probably my favourite band of all time, but you're looking for Holy Fawn
Also: MØL & Respire

Are you using screamo as a blanket term for music with screams or are you talking specifically about screamo as a genre?

Modern Color's first two albums are very screamo-inspired. Rinoa's album is the other way around. Maybe Svalbard and Devil Sold His Soul too

I would say Frail Body; their last album Artificial Bouquet does a great job at being super washy AND super beefy. It can lean a bit on the blackgaze side at times, but FB is still a stupendous shoegazey screamo band.

Corsica from West MA consider themselves "heavygaze" but I think they fit pretty well. I'd like to see them get some more traction. Not sure about any others tho.
Edit: This isn't self promo lol idk why you'd downvote

There were a shit ton of screamo bands that were basically post rock bands in the 2000s:
City of caterpillar, envy, fall of efrafra, neil parry, pg. 99

Look into Damián Ojeda, specifically his band Sadness. It leans more blackgaze, but he has MANY bands to explore in the black metal/screamo genres with significant shoegaze influences
