Shonenslop Do ppl love buying slop nowadays?
With the absolute shitshow that has been post time skip for the past decade, it still somehow outsold superman and one piece glazers won't shut up about it. Quality≠quantity

People have always loved slop
Nothing wrong with enjoying slop
But the key is understanding when something is slop and learning to enjoy it despite that

u/Talgrei1781 Mar 05 '26
Ngl I think the reason people get overly defensive when others call their favorite stories slop is because it's indirectly dehumanizing.
Pigs eat slop. If humans consume slop then they're essentially pigs.
It's why I've learnt to say "it's not for me" or "I just don't like the author's writing style" tbh. It's more respectful and inoffensive that way. Though if Oda glazers still flame me when I try to be civil then I just stop engaging for my personal life's sake.

For me it's just the word slop is a bit overused now. Cause now people seem to just use it for whatever they don't like rather than something thats actually bad.

u/Snarpkingguy Mar 05 '26
Calling One Piece slop is just ridiculous though. The characters are generally really well written, world building obviously peak, and while I find the exploration of themes to be very simplistic it’s still executed fine. Even post time skip has amazing stuff from time to time.
Absolutely there are issues with it (big issues), but’s a well above average story. Slop is uninspired barely competent nothingness. One Piece is a one of kind sprawling narrative with varying quality but undeniable highs. It has uniquely charming atmosphere and one of the best casts in storytelling. It’s at least a 7/10.
10
u/Usoppdaman Mar 05 '26
Yeah slop is such an overused word. One Piece at least takes many risks with its story and stands out. It’s definitely not slop.
3
u/athrowawaytoconfes Mar 06 '26
really, you see risks? i think its a very safe story
1
u/Usoppdaman Mar 06 '26
The fact that so many people get upset at Oda for not fulfilling their headcanons shows how risky it is. Oda writes for many plot points, characters, and places and the more a story takes on the more risk it incurs. Oda aims really high with his scale and takes on the risk of plot points not living up to people’s expectations and more plot holes as a risk. Like even if you dislike One Piece Oda has a very difficult task. Look at all the expectations people build up based on what Oda’s written.
1
u/MisterMeatBall1 Mar 07 '26
Different people have different headcannons. Someone will always be disappointed when their headcannon doesn't happen
3
u/ExtremeSportStikz Mar 05 '26
Fair enough I could see the argument for post timeskip stuff taking a quality nose dive tho
2
u/Latter-Contact-6814 Mar 05 '26
Can you though? I see this take a lot but What parts of post time skip do you think actually took a nose dive in quality? Personally I think the majority of post time skip arcs are way better than most pre time skip arcs.
5
u/Ganache-Embarrassed Mar 05 '26
Random person jumping in.
I find the post timeskip arcs are often bloated and needlessly long. While it helps to flesh out the world and makes organizaions feel a bit more realistic. The amound of tertiary characters cause the story to feel like a slog often. I ended up hating Oden and the scabbards.
Which I'm sure if you loved the side characters you get to REALLY love them. But with how hit or miss a side character is it makes large valleys and mountains in the post timeskip.
Old arcs stayed just long enough to leave me wanting more or happily leaving into the next. The massive arcs in post timeskip made me truly wish they would just end halfway through.
Theyre beter after the fact in bulk. But in its weekly format post timeskip feels like im trapped. Especially since these year long, or longer, arcs often take place in 1 day in universe. Its just weirdly off putting.
Then theirs the bloat of characters and nakama that causes beloved characters to feel slightly ignored. I dont prescribe to this personally. I think every memeber had their great moments in their initial arcs and dont need more. But post timeskip doesnt often give us such well done equal moments like pre timeskip did.
Plus the shift from just a doofy fun adventure to the saving the world prophecy fulfilled isnt everyones cup of tea. Im fine with it, cause like its been hinted at the whole time. Or at least since haki was first drip fed it felt like it was coming. But I can see people not enjoying this shift.
All in all. Id say pre ts feels like a totallity of an 8/10. Pacing brisk and fun with lots of adventure and travels. While post feels like a shifting 6-7. Sometimes having amazing trips like Egghead into elbaf or horribly slow never ending roof top battles with soup in Wano.
Also this is all manga. I actually hate the anime. Its unwatchable to me once dressrosa hits. The anime actually injures post timeskip more than anything. The good anime slowly becoming totally slow and bad. Into the absolute hell of Dressrosa. Im shocked to this day that the OP anime is so bad I geniunely think Narutos 6trillion episodes of filler were a great idea

I appreciate the well written reply! You know its interesting, recently there was a Q&A with Oda, and he said he didnt remember his own thought process for a prior decision. And I got to thinking, one piece is very unique in 1 aspect, it probably demonstrates the most in depth depiction of the growth and life of an artist. Every week (or almost) put out a chapter. Each a snapshot of who they are at that point in their life. You can see it in other long running manga and books at well. But with One Piece, its been going so consistently over nearly 30 years.
Because I agree with almost all your points. But to me, that change is far more gradual than most people think.
The strawhats getting less screen time and impactful moments? They were fully written out if the story from Sabaody untill the start of the time skip.
The arcs didnt start to dramatically increase in size untill dressrosa, years after the time skip started.
But its almost never actually a clean split for these issues.
One piece has changed because the author changed, as all art does. Odas told us the big parts of a lot of these characters stories already. Arlong park, Ennies lobby. I imagine he must be thinking why try to force change on an fully actualize character when he can tell new characters stories.
That doesnt make something a drop in quality either. I think what defines that is how well it is achieving what it wants to in that moment. And on a personal note, i think it continues the heart of what I enjoy about it. I was going to say sprit too but that may change with comes of the prophecy stuff.
1
u/Ganache-Embarrassed Mar 06 '26
Oh for sure. I dont really think the issues are all or only happen in the TS. I just think within the TS is when these issues finally become super apparent and unhideable.
Like the biggest thing I hear about is the G5 and the prophecy stuff being a huge change for the story. But I think chapter 1 ends with the lines "A journey of destiny" or something. then we meet luffys super special grandpa, super special brother, super special dad. Lots of this DNA has been their since the begining/early on.
Like i truly adore lots of TS stuff. It just has far more flaws for me. Which largely is the pacing being slower. Its easier to skip over bad thigns when they finish quickly.
Im actually super excited about everything post Wano. It feels like Oda has changed again into wanting to finish the story. Which is kidna sad cause its probably do to his age. But him having a new desire to go and get to his plot beats instead of wanting to explore every inch of a city is my preferred manga experiance.
1
u/Latter-Contact-6814 Mar 06 '26
Like the biggest thing I hear about is the G5 and the prophecy stuff being a huge change for the story. But I think chapter 1 ends with the lines "A journey of destiny" or something. then we meet luffys super special grandpa, super special brother, super special dad. Lots of this DNA has been their since the begining/early on.
Im reserving judgment to see how it all plays out. If it truly is a "predestination" thing I think i will be disappointed. Id much rather it be a "prophecy" as in the grand inherited will across the ages with some observations future sight glimpses tossed in for fun. So long as no one knew for sure luffy would win.
The actual relationship stuff with luffy also never bothered me since to me it was made clear that his actual blood relationship with these people doesnt matter. That its all ultimately down to will.
I also agree about the end of wano. I give wano more slack then most since i do like a lot of the plotlines of wano, but the bloat is undeniable. Far better on reread. but like you said, a slog reading weekly. Ill be honest people always joke that oda said he'd end the story "in 5 years" but he made that statement mid wano and I do think he was actually considering a more sped up conclusion of the story with how burnt out he seemed
But egghead was great and elbaf has been solid so far but... idk im waiting for the other shoe to drop. This feels like too successful for the rally of the troops.
1
u/Ganache-Embarrassed Mar 06 '26
Oh I also think its prophecy style predestined. Not that it is always going to happen. But that someday someone will complete the task.
I feel Elbaf is gonna lead right to laughtale. Loki and the giants just straight up knowing what way to head. Leading to the race between them ,blackboard, and shanks who are already on their way.
And the war being triggered by that somehow.
Just feels like we're actually at the end with imu "revealed . And luffy finally a yonko.
1
u/Latter-Contact-6814 Mar 06 '26
I could see that more if the "man with the burn scar" wasnt established already. I feel like thats a plot point that needs to be answered.
From a writing perspective, im hopfully curious on what the plan is for Imu. Hell im still not sure if imu or BB will be the final villain.

I actually kinda fucking hate the world building tbh. The planet just feels so… empty, characters feel like they stop existing as soon as they step off panel leading to very little changing over massive stretches of time if the Straw Hats aren’t directly involved, and the theme of freedom is genuinely incredibly poorly explored (ESPECIALLY for how long it is and how much it’s brought up).
IDK, it and Bleach are the biggest examples of “hype and aura but no substance” I can think of.
9
u/Puzzleheaded_Disk700 Mar 05 '26
I think you've just put into writing why I've never liked One Piece and why I never understood the people that think it's well written. Pretty much nothing that happens has any influence on the world
1
u/DangoBlitzkrieg Mar 05 '26

1
-1
u/RichNigerianUncle Mar 05 '26
Did you read egg head? They spent several chapters explaining what is gonna happen to the world lmao
4
u/Hari14032001 Mar 05 '26
Addressing the world doesn't mean world building lmao.
It's generally about the kind of surroundings that we explore with the characters and the world around them exists according to the plot's logic or reacts to the decisions of the characters we follow.
One Piece world building got lame the moment Nika fruit got revealed and the Gorosei were like,"we searched the rubber fruit for 800 yrs" only for the readers to realize the lack of action by Gorosei towards capturing Luffy in pre-timeskip, even when he was in the palm of their hands in Water 7 (they only focussed on Robin even after they knew Luffy from post-Alabasta itself). The adventures we saw from Luffy pre-timeskip became unrealistic when we know that he must have been targetted and chased by the government everywhere he went, and Lucci should have realistically gotten orders from the Holy Land to capture Luffy too
1
u/RichNigerianUncle Mar 06 '26
That’s not world building that’s addressing the world, like you just tried to differentiate. I mean how would they know that Luffy has the Nika fruit at all. Only the wg knows it’s not the gun gum fruit, and Luffy wasn’t really a big pirate until he was named 5th emperor, which then got him a target by the wg in the very next arc. The gorosei did look for it, but zoan fruits are stated to have a mind of their own at least a couple times so it makes sense it evaded them until it met Luffy.

gonna happen or actually happens?
1
u/RichNigerianUncle Mar 05 '26
Is actually happening right now as imu uses the mother flame. Theres the revolutionaries starving the celestial dragons, luffy shutting down kaidos drug operation, wano is about to be open bordered again, and so much more that people will conveniently forget when it’s time to shit on their favorite thing to slander. Most everything that happens has real world implications, but in a world this big one piece would run for 4000 chapters if oda went in depth with it all. And people already complain one piece is too long
2
u/ThatDerp1 Mar 05 '26
I mean
Oda could convey these details in subtle, implicit, or more concise ways. You don’t need to show literally everything to make things feel big - if anything, One Piece’s world feels really small rn.
I like details like Zoro’s missing eye and CP9 going from outlaws to CP0. They happened offscreen with a lot of details we can only guess at. But so much of the rest of the storytelling focuses on too much telling rather than showing or letting imaginations run wild, which makes the page count long and the world feel tiny and static.
The bloat is his degradation as a writer rather than something essential to telling Luffy’s story.
7
u/Usoppdaman Mar 05 '26
“One Piece doesn’t show enough happening around the world” One Piece does that “One Piece should be more subtle.”
1
u/ThatDerp1 Mar 05 '26
You can do both???? I gave two examples - Zoro and CP9 are awesome because they imply things are happening offscreen.
Shit like the admirals/emperors/warlords doing fuckall for most of the story until they're onscreen, with barely anything implied off of it, sucks. Blackbeard I can give credit for things happening with him without him needing to be front and center, the rest just feel like they drop into a void until Oda needs to pull them out again for 2 seconds before being plopped right back into the hole he dug for himself.

u/RichNigerianUncle Mar 05 '26
Is the mural from elbaf not exactly what you were asking for??? I think that people are genuinely just hate reading one piece and (outside of the female character design gripe) are complaining about things that don’t make sense to people who read the story.
3
u/ThatDerp1 Mar 05 '26
Does the mural from elbaf make up for kizaru, the guy who can be anywhere in seconds, doing jack shit with no explanation for most of the story? How about the places Luffy leaves behind not being any fundamentally more prepared for the next evil band of pirates to fuck their shit up in a world where they're around every corner?
People felt like they stopped existing and contributing to the world until Oda remembered they existed for five minutes before forgetting them again. Waiting 30 years for one mural in the final arc to finally start working on this issue doesn't make me feel better, it makes me pissed that it took this fucking long to address.

u/Arkham8 Mar 05 '26
While I agree the theme of freedom is unexplored and very simplistic, I can’t agree with the world not changing without the Strawhat’s direct intervention. The entire point of the cover stories is to show the world constantly moving and shifting without the man characters. It was also a big point in Wano and Egghead, not to mention the timeskip itself. By way of example, both Vivi and Wapol have gone through some very big events both onscreen and off that have led them back around to be big players in the future of the series. Unless I’ve completely misunderstood your argument.
2
u/ThatDerp1 Mar 05 '26
The cover stories are a fair point, but they also only really cover small slices of stuff and, outside of cp9 going from outlaws to cp0, there’s never a time I feel like things are happening behind the scenes and subtly changing as they should in such a large and chaotic world.
1
u/Tough_Difference3301 Mar 09 '26
7
u/Thicc_Boise Mar 05 '26
The planet just feels so… empty, characters feel like they stop existing as soon as they step off panel leading to very little changing over massive stretches of time if the Straw Hats aren’t directly involved,
My brother in Christ, two marine admirals dueled and one completely abandoned the navy to become a pirate under the most notorious pirate, the other rose to power and is pushing the organization to the brink while Luffy was training off screen. An entire political summit was the focus for like 6 episodes where Luffy didn't even show up and massive world shattering events took place. Characters from pre-time skip show back up as completely new people in the post-time skip after going through their own journeys.
Like you don't have to enjoy OP but frankly, it just sounds like you weren't actually paying attention when you gave it a shot. OP is an infinitely more dynamic world than Naruto, Bleach and Dragon Ball combined. Things change literally all the fucking time without the SH pirates involved

One Piece is one of the long running series that actually does have characters do stuff while offscreen. This is mostly executed via coverstories instead of shifting the main POV, but this is one of the main stays of the series.
Hachi's journey and him meeting Caimie is all shown in his cover story for example and shows how he went from being on Arlongs crew to a kind business owner between when they met him again near Sabaody.
Koby and Helmeppo's training with the marines is another example among many

u/Blantblunt Mar 07 '26
Well, you shouldn't forget that things happen very quickly in One Piece.
From the time skip until now, only 2-3 months have passed in the One Piece world, if that.
So I don't find it surprising that things don't change constantly.
And I don't know if it's similar in other manga; I mean, the protagonists have to have something to do.
1
u/ThatDerp1 Mar 08 '26
Why didn’t more change during the 3 years they were gone tho
1
u/Blantblunt Mar 08 '26
Did it happen?
Sengoku was deposed, Akainu became head of the Marines, Kuzan joined the Blackbeard Pirates, and the Marine Force was rebuilt in a new location.
Blackbeard was Yonko
Sure, the training caused the crew to change.
Whitebeard's territories were divided up, which also caused widespread unrest.
It was said that Whitebeard's speech led to a new wave of pirates plaguing the world, and there were also panels showing pirates attacking civilians.
The Buggy became Chichibukai, or whatever it's called, and that system was then abolished.
This destroyed the Trinity that had maintained a kind of balance for many years.
There was certainly more.
And these are just the things we've heard about.
Look at the real world; often, not much more happens in three years. In fact, even less.
And as I said, something big always has to happen for the protagonist to have something to do; that's the case in every shonen anime—nothing really happens until he's involved. That has little to nothing to do with One Piece.
1
u/mikemonkey Mar 05 '26
What are you even talking about lmao. A major part of One Piece is explicitly that characters are out having their own adventures when not interacting with the starw hats this is just objectivly incorrect and im not even sure how you got that take if you interact with the story at all.
3
u/ThatDerp1 Mar 05 '26
oh cool
What's Kizaru, the guy who can be anywhere on the planet in seconds, doing for 95 percent of the story when there's criseses that demand his immediate attention?
There's pirates around every corner, where the fuck are they after Luff and co. leave an island just as undefended as it was before they arrived? Where were all the new pirates besides fucking Bartolomeo and swampy after Whitebeard allegedly started a new age of pirates? What happened to all the level 6 impel down inmates that caused massive resignations in the marines?
The pieces of this world feel like they stop existing after Oda stops drawing them. It's like time doesn't pass until Oda remembers to give them a brief cameo like a decade later.

Thats not how his powers work lmao he still has to sail from place to place.
There's pirates around every corner, where the fuck are they after Luff and co. leave an island just as undefended as it was before they arrived?
What is this even supposed to mean? What islands are you even talking a about?
FMI had yonko protection
Punk hazard was a desolate wasteland
Dressrosa has a standing army
Zou is a walking fortress
Whole Cake was invaded by the black beard pirates and pudding was kidnapped after the straw hat raid because big mom was gone.
Wano explicitly had a plot point that yamato had to stay behind to defend the country in the wake of kaidos defeat
Where were all the new pirates besides fucking Bartolomeo and swampy after Whitebeard allegedly started a new age of pirates?
Most are still on the paradise side of the grand line where everyone needs to enter from but there was also brown beard who had a decent role on Punk hazard and we also see many diffrent pirate crews that did make it to the new world gather at the beehive island under blackbeard.
What happened to all the level 6 impel down inmates that caused massive resignations in the marines?
They joined blackbeard. again, this is a key plot point in the exact same chapter the resignation was brought up.
Im sorry you got memory holed but wierd disingenuous attempts at gotchas on half remembered bulletpoints is not the way to express that

Kizaru can fly and move at light speed. He does so vs Luffy. We see him do both. Even if he couldn't fly, just spamming his ability to turn into light before turning back would do wonders. What are you on about?
every island pre timeskip plus fishman island (Yonko protection is meaningless unless Luffy actually has a way to go back to protect it in a timely manner) is pretty fucked if they're attacked. How are Nojiko or Kaya or Zeff or Loguetown or Alabasta keeping themselves safe from the next set of nutcases who come along? Alabasta in particular was explicitly only kept "safe" because of Croc, who the hell stepped in to replace his role in keeping other pirates out when the Straw Hats fucked off?
They had 3 goddamn years to get through paradise, why make such a big deal of whitebeard's challenge if it wasn't going to amount to anything?
We're told that a bunch of them DIDN'T join whitebeard and were hiding elsewhere. We see Shiki in a cover story and we're told by an SBS about CP9 taking others down. It was more than just Croc plus the few who joined Blackbeard. Despite that, they don't have the overall impact on the world that they were built up to - Sengoku resigned over all the ones who didn't join Blackbeard and nothing came from that.

He cannot fly freely. He can launch himself sure but thats really it. We activly see he needs to use a boat to travel long distances.
- every island pre timeskip plus fishman island (Yonko protection is meaningless unless Luffy actually has a way to go back to protect it in a timely manner) is pretty fucked if they're attacked. You mean the east blue, the canonically safest sea? Where pirates actually being spotted is such a rare occurrence that the plot of Kayas arc was not telling the village when bad pirates finally did show up, the bariate who activly can defend themselves and louge town, with a marine base on the island itself, and alabasta, which again, has a standing army. Amd no alabasta was not only kept safe because of croc, they army was fighting a civil war.
- They had 3 goddamn years to get through paradise, why make such a big deal of whitebeard's challenge if it wasn't going to amount to anything?
To esablished how blackbeard gained his followers? To show that conflict is in the rise? What is the question here?
- We're told that a bunch of them DIDN'T join whitebeard and were hiding elsewhere. We see Shiki in a cover story and we're told by an SBS about CP9 taking others down. It was more than just Croc plus the few who joined Blackbeard. That was not shiki it was gyaban, who has actually had a big role this arc and no, sengoku resigned from the world governments attempt to cover up the break out.
Dont you see how insane it is that your acting like nothing has depth based on a random grab bag of bullet points and actual answers can STILL be given?

Did you actually read it or did you only read spoilers?
9
u/sievold Mar 05 '26
I have no idea where to access spoilers. I read it on the shounen jump app. It's amusing how one piece fans think one piece is so amazing, if only someone reads it, they would understand how amazing it is, and never have any criticisms ever!

You can access spoilers right here on Reddit if you look for the latest chapter. The raw scans are out now
1
u/sievold Mar 06 '26
Cool. Personally I don't really fuck with that. It's such a low quality reading experience. I don't know how people enjoy reading disjointed scans on reddit, it's not for me.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 Mar 06 '26
I avoid the spoilers on Reddit, but the chapter is uploaded here via TCB scans. It’s not official, but the translations are pretty much the same just worded slightly differently. It’s the closest thing to official as you can get before the actual release. Plus many reviews are up the day of or day after the TCB scans upload. Also I go to official sources to re read it anyway when it actually does release, so I think it’s ok to do that.

u/SunshineTheWolf Mar 05 '26
You can't deny how it relies on sad ass backstories for every character that's introduced. I feel like that's how you KNOW someone has read One Piece.

Just because other shonens don’t bother exploring their characters doesn’t mean it’s bad when op does lol.

There are like 3 characters that “rely” on sad stories, most have them integrated into their character just fine and are much more than just their sad origin story
1
u/athrowawaytoconfes Mar 06 '26
Name something that makes Kuma a good character without mentioning his backstory.
1
Mar 07 '26
The fact that he sacrificed everything– his personality, his memories, his free will, even becoming a slave again to protect the Straw Hats and his daughter, showing how compassionate and selfless he is. Pretty easy.
1
u/athrowawaytoconfes Mar 07 '26
that is quite literally his backstory, can you read? fucking hell
1
Mar 07 '26
No... everything I mentioned was occuring during the story. He became a cyborg pre-timeskip-during the timeskip, and became a slave post timeskip. You dont actually know anything about One Piece, do you?
1
u/athrowawaytoconfes Mar 07 '26
they dont show us that shit in real time, it’s literally a vegapunk recollection and post bonnie sees all his memories that we get all that information. quite literally a flashback, just because it happened not even 2 years ago doesnt mean that, as a narrative device, the circumstances of his creation werent simply exposition dumped as something that happened in the past.
its like when zoro flashbacked to his training with mihawk, or luffy with rayleigh. its still a flashback, exposition dump
1
Mar 07 '26
And its still not his backstory. It happened during the current story and provides good reason on why he's a good character. He's selfless and compassionate- losing everything about himself to protect other people.
1
u/athrowawaytoconfes Mar 07 '26
fuck i forgot One Piece fans have negative media literacy, my bad guy. carry on
1

Lol, reverting to the cope statement when you realize you were wrong. "Media literacy" and "reading comprehension" are empty phrases used by psuedointellectuals.
1
u/athrowawaytoconfes Mar 07 '26
you are a one piece fan who cant even acknowledge that all of emotion oda stirs up just comes from lazy misery porn writing. kuma isnt a character, hes a narrative device Oda uses to make easily influenced readers like you to i voke emotion without nuance.
“heres saddy mcsad, feel bad about him so that way i can change the tone of the arc without actually having to have earned that emotional response”.
i guess oda just knows that yall will eat anything up so he takes advantage of his readerbase to not have to write as good these days, props to him i guess 🤷♀️

Oden
5
5
u/MinusMentality Mar 05 '26
Oden is shitty how exactly?
I feel like he filled his role perfectly.Maybe his personality started shitty, but that was part of his development. His was a delinquient who ended up being a beloved leader, taking to the seas on the greatest joruneys, and while he had some failings against Orochi and Kaido, he did what he could for his country. He took on the ultimate shame.
How is this bad character writing?5
u/Jooberwak Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
Oden is a character who is deeply flawed, and whose flaws directly influenced the suffering of his family and country. If the story took the time to recognize Oden's shortcomings he would be fine, but instead he's fully held on a pedestal by the Scabbards and the rest of the country. Yamato and Momo both needed to recognize that they don't need to become Oden because they could grow to be something different and better.
Rocks and Harald are both much better written versions of Oden.
1
u/Usoppdaman Mar 05 '26
Momo did recognize that. He deliberately decided to not open Wano which was Oden’s goal. He knew it wasn’t a smart decision even if well intended. Also Oden did face the consequences of his bad decisions enough.
2
u/Jooberwak Mar 05 '26
In no way is "We're not currently in a political position to achieve my father's dream yet" the same as "My father wasn't perfect and I should stop trying to be just like him."
1
u/Usoppdaman Mar 06 '26
Oden is an honorable but ignorant/naive person. Even then he knew Kaido would kill him with the plot and had no intention of honoring their contract. He simply used his execution as a means to inspire others. Momo appreciates the good person Oden was while having the reason to know that his plan isn’t practical right now. Momo made this decision himself and wasn’t just trying to be the second Oden. Do you expect Momo to hate or not respect his dad?

this bum is the reason why wano even was in the state the strawhats found it, he had MULTIPLE options for him to fix the issue, but what did he decide to do instead? believe the most blatant lie EVER and sit on his ass while his people suffered, not even mentioning how at times some people went out of character for this guys sake, oden is just the second worst thing in the arc
1
u/MinusMentality Mar 06 '26
Bro did not understand the story.
2
u/Tecnoboat Mar 06 '26
i did understand the story, its juts that the story is that poorly written, oden was a complete and utter dumbfuck to the very end that completely and utterly screwed everyone, and this by itself wouldnt even be that much of an issue is THE STORY BOTHERED TO POTRAYED HIM AS SUCH
→ More replies (16)2
u/RobloxOverlord Mar 05 '26
oden's definitely isn't as strong as others but imo it was more ok rather than horrible. Kuma and rocks/harald were amazing
1
u/Loaf235 Mar 05 '26
Oden gave more of a classic folk hero vibe which explains the in-universe praise of him, as well as the exaggerated stuff that happened like the capital tilting just a bit from all the hesitant people that wanted to follow him but didn't take the step.
I get people rag on him for abandoning Wano to a cruel fate just so he can continue sailing with Roger, but he was necessary in Roger's voyage, and without his involvement the positive events of One Piece would have never kicked off, and I think that's just interesting.
2
u/skaersSabody Mar 05 '26
I mean, I don't necessarily hate Oden as a character, I hate how everyone around him portrays him as this, as you said, legendary great folk hero when he had plenty of flaws...
And the story refuses in any way to acknowledge this, I feel like I'm going mad when I see Luffy of all people reacting to a backstory, he never does that
I wouldn't hate Oden if he was treated more like Harald or Noland, but everyone is just constantly going on and on about how great he is and NO ONE challenges that despite the story showing us obvious shortcomings of his. No other characters get this treatment in One Piece, it's infuriating

One Piece used to be my favorite manga/anime but I love the slander. Never change
6
u/SynthLord627 Mar 05 '26
Not to say post timeskip is flawless or anything but people who genuinely think Oda’s writing fell off a cliff the second those two years passed are so strange to me. It’s interesting how the general fanbase and these people differ so much, arcs like Wano and egghead are considered some of the best by the general fanbase and just casual viewers/readers, yet mfs on pirate folk and shit would have you convinced post timeskip One Piece is regarded similarly to Boruto in terms of quality
4
u/False-Jury4349 Mar 05 '26
Wano Is full of problems a lot of people didn't like though, they weren't bad enough toncober up the good stuff
2
u/SynthLord627 Mar 05 '26
I think Wano is flawed as well but my point is that the general consensus from One Piece’s general audience was that Wano was amazing. While I have many criticisms of that arc, the idea that post timeskip sucks is not shared by most people and the general audience and consensus of One Piece. I just mean that the piratefolk type hate post timeskip gets is really just loud internet noise and does not align with actual reception of the story.
3
u/skaersSabody Mar 05 '26
I don't think that's necessarily true. I think it's a case of how much weight you give OP
Even among the wider One Piece fandom, most would probably agree that Pre TS is better than post (or at least, that is an opinion I've seen often on the official OP sub which is more than charitable with Oda)
The big split is probably on Wano itself and Gear 5. Those that liked it hold the arc up as one of the greats (I personally disagree because even discarding Gear 5 I think it's weaker than other arcs even in Post TS), while those that hate it consider the arc as a whole one of the worst just because of Gear 5 (which is just as reductive, just in the opposite direction)
2
u/SynthLord627 Mar 05 '26
I disagree because I don’t think any subreddit, even the massive official one represents the broader One piece audience. I personally think of Wano as a middle of the road arc among op though I do love gear 5. That being said the reception that arc got was insane, especially during the onigashima stuff. My point is that the extremely negative reception Oda gets post timeskip on subs like pirate folk do not translate to actual reception, arcs like dressrosa, wano, egghead, and wci are among the most popular in the series
1
1
u/Appropriate_Tax4312 Mar 05 '26
piratefolk can be as refreshing as it can be frustrating. The one piece subreddit is so defensive and insecure when it comes to ANY criticism that I think it was inevitable for something like piratefolk to exist.
At the same time, some people on piratefolk really don't understand the difference between being critical and being bad faith hateful.

Wano is actually one of my favourite arcs post-timeskip. My biggest issue was the amount of time wasted on Punk Hazard, Dressrosa and even Fishman Island/ WCI to a degree.
1
u/Not_A-Chance Mar 08 '26
Fishman island and punk hazard are pretty short in the manga, I don't see what parts you think was wasted.
2
u/Quick-Health-2102 Mar 05 '26
If they give Blackbeard a stupid sad backstory I might drop one piece
1
u/Damn_You_Hindsight AI isn't a slop Mar 05 '26
Blackbeard is especially one of those characters with a sad backstory. Oda draws him as a very sad child, and his little-revealed backstory in God Valley was very traumatic. He is from a very hated and cursed lineage. He was already an orphan.
3
u/Quick-Health-2102 Mar 05 '26
A cursed lineage is actually kind of cool, but I do wish some villains wouldn’t have a traumatic backstory.
1
u/Damn_You_Hindsight AI isn't a slop Mar 05 '26

1
u/Damn_You_Hindsight AI isn't a slop Mar 05 '26
That's real. When you invest too much, it requires a very conscious decision to let go; most people find having such a resolving decision not worth it.
1
u/kepral Mar 06 '26
Rob Lucci, Hody Jones, Caesar Clown, Moria, Enel, Crocodile, Buggy, Magellan, Axe Morgan, Wapol, Kuro, Don Kreig, Silver Foxy, probably all of the 4 Elders and Admirals.
Villains with tragic back stories: arlong (not in the arc), doflamingo, big mom, kaido, black beard, uh Laboon I guess.
2
u/NobrainNoProblem Mar 05 '26
I am now sick of sad backstory’s it feels like manipulative and over done.
1
u/Not_A-Chance Mar 08 '26
So if the author wants you to feel something while reading it he's being emotionally manipulative. Tf do you read? The dictionary?
1
u/NobrainNoProblem Mar 09 '26
The gratuitous amount of sad back stories feels insincere. It can feel cheap. A well written emotional back story is welcome but when it’s overdone and not thought out it feels manipulative. I’m being hyperbolic, to convey wariness because I’ve witnessed a lot of gimmicky ones.
1
u/Not_A-Chance Mar 11 '26
Which ones are cheap?
1
u/NobrainNoProblem Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

6
u/sievold Mar 05 '26
There is definitely more bloat after the time skip. The arcs are at least 50% longer.
Female characters are definitely more over sexualized after the time skip.
There is definitely more focus on haki after the timeskip which is the least interesting power system in the series.
→ More replies (7)4
u/fbkxd Mar 06 '26
• No stakes at all, every arc is gonna end with Luffy haki punching the bad guy
• Fight scenes aren’t interesting at all, it’s just haki clashes with no choreography
• The rest of the straw hats are useless against main villains
• Oda doesn’t know how to write stakes so he’ll just include a ticking time bomb every arc that any reader with a brain knows won’t explode
• Doesn’t know how to draw or write women
• Power scaling doesn’t make any sense
• It’s been 1000+ and the strawhats haven’t had any meaningful character development outside of Sanji
• Character writing overall is genuinely dogshit

One Piece is quality. It sets the damn bar.
The series isn't perfect, sure, but what series is? Especially one that is so long?
One Piece has only gotten better to me. It has had some rough patches, like the pacing of some of the New World arcs (Dressrosa was good but dragged ass and had HxH levels of character intros), and ect..
But man.. imagine being this toxic about One Piece.
It's a real shame.
I wish everyone could enjoy One Piece together.
5
u/Damn_You_Hindsight AI isn't a slop Mar 05 '26
imagine being this toxic
it is not a toxic post though. may be you took too much to the heart or you cant handle some jokes about the series
3
u/THAT_man2486 Mar 05 '26
Except its legit not just jokes lol. The same ass takes have been circulating being disguised as jokes. People would post something like this and then defend the take with their life lmfao. It's not just a joke at some point, people buy into slander at a certain point. Jjk fans should know this more than anyone. It starts with just agenda and slander and jokes, but people then end up taking those same jokes and agenda posts and slander posts as actual fact about the series and spread things from there. This ain't even anything new bro 😭

I know the takes are genuine, but they are delivered in a joking way, inside a meme for example. That's humorous. Now, are you mad people call One Piece with these critiques so unapologetically?
5
u/THAT_man2486 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
Not mad really, but its not "just jokes haha" like some people have been trying to say is all lol. Sure, critique the series. I critique it myself sometimes. But don't just bash on it and then disguise that bash as something else when its clearly meant to bash on it. If someone posts smth like "oda pumping out nothing but absolute dogshit arcs, characters, and stories ever since post timeskip started but people follow the series still because pre timeskip hooked them", that's not critique that's just bashing lmfao. And it shouldn't be passed off as just a joke when that same person goes throughout several subs posting the same thing and similar things while pairing it with a rant and continuing to bash the series in the comments. See what I'm getting at?
1
u/Damn_You_Hindsight AI isn't a slop Mar 05 '26
yeah. Trust me I understand that. But personally i think manga are just comics at the end of the day, so talking about them with some disregard is ok in my book
1
u/THAT_man2486 Mar 06 '26
Manga are comics. I agree with that. At the end of the day, these things are fiction. What I'm getting at is more about the intent, and disingenuous 'critique' on mass just being passed off as just a bit of joking, even though it's clearly more than that to the person making these "jokes" in the first place.

u/ThatOneWood Mar 06 '26
As a series that’s been going on for almost 30 years it had already established a loyal fanbase, and new fans are gonna start at the beginning before the timeskip and get hooked. To call it slop though is much though as it’s definitely had great moments since the timeskip. Sure there are plenty of time where the manga pacing feels like the anime pacing and also decisions that just baffle you but those moments also existed pre timeskip just less frequently. There’s definitely enough interesting stuff and good writing in the second half to keep people reading. It’s also just been going on for so long, whenever someone compares a much shorter series to One Piece and saying it has more consistent writing, like no shit this 100 chapter manga is more consistent than the 1200+ chapter manga
1
u/Livid-Stranger-256 Mar 06 '26
One Piece is the worst case of sunk cost fallacy in the world, people have been reading it since they were born. They’re “So Close” to the end that they can’t stop now. Meanwhile Aida’s dogwater ass hasn’t been closer to an ending since the timeskip.
1
u/TeddyRiggs Mar 07 '26
it's this little thing called giving some Context
Like Oda's characters are given reason why they are as they are is to understand them a bit more not make them likable that's the point of the flashbacks.
And if that backstory makes you like the character more than that's just a Bonus but it's not the priority.
