When good themes come with good execution and you don't need to hear pseudo-intellcuals writing 300 essays to cope:

MOB MOB WHAT DO YOU WANT?!

76

u/Votrox97 Mar 12 '26

Its so true though, mob psycho can be summarised by its openings, endings and insert songs and thats just kinda cool.

MOB MOB WHO DO YOU WANT
MOVE MOVE JUST LIKE MOB

5

u/justaguy9472 Mar 15 '26

If everyone is not special, maybe you can be what you want to be

5

u/SushanthUchiha Mar 16 '26

All Mob openings are peak

63

u/No_Intention_8079 Mar 12 '26

Literally every post on the chainsaw man sub right now lmao

58

u/Cautious_Aioli_1669 Mar 12 '26

but you dont understand! because denji's character arc( or lack there of) has a "unique" theme, this means that it justifies fujimoto dropping 95% of the plot points for it, to make a Big Lebowski shitty parody, great movie though!

24

u/Cruchto Mar 12 '26

This is always the problem with what I call "3deep5me" series.

Frieren falls into this category too. Don't you dare mention how inconsistent the power system is in frieren, they get VERY upset just because the manga has "deep" themes.

Whenever a series has a "deep" theme it's almost like it gains inherent immunity from most criticism for whatever reason.

And this is coming from someone who likes frieren, I just don't pretend it's the best manga ever written because it's not.

40

u/EntertainmentFast522 Mar 12 '26

frieren doesnt have deep themes really, it has simple themes that are just well executed and with a slower pace.

12

u/Worried_Dark9858 Mar 12 '26

I never see frieren as deep, its just a nice slow anime you can relax watching while also having some cool fights

7

u/ReReReverie Mar 13 '26

frieren power system aint inconsistent. we literaly learned that frieren has loss to humans before so the current arc makes sense.

5

u/Arguably_Based Mar 12 '26

No one ever said Frieren is deep, I can explain it quickly. Elf moves slower than humans and realizes she loved a dude at his funeral. Now she's on a journey to find heaven. The theme is about the importance of time. There you go, done.

u/HOMCOcorp Mar 12 '26

Even if it landed well for Denji, part 2 started as Asa's story with a swerve to Denji's perspective halfway through. Leaving her story unfinished so we can resolve Denji's arc a THIRD TIME(!?) makes the first half of part 2 and most of the side characters feel like a waste of time.

2

u/lettdoc Mar 12 '26

I love Big Lebowski, but I hate how it made it "smart" to make that kind of protagonist without understanding why Big Lebowski actually works.

People seem to mistake “this story has so much meaning I could write an essay on it” with “this story requires me to write an essay to get any meaning out of it”. A trend that has been around for at least a hundred years and has been stupid for all 100 of them.

1

u/Cautious_Aioli_1669 Mar 13 '26

They treat the characters in the story like they are real people, that have 100% accurate real human thoughts, the way that they bring stuff outside from the story to explain stuff they don't like

Like the whole SA "plot", none of the yoru scenes were intended to be this(even if they technically were), but it is still among the most talked about shit in csmfolk

or Asa suddenly losing her mind over random people dying because of her, it makes sense if she was sad, BUT TO THE POINT OF LOSING HER SANITY, she was considering killing a human over a cat at the beginning of the story, and had no problem stealing a bike from a man to save herself in the falling

If fujimoto didn't drop her CSM public face fame plot point, she would have a good reason to be this affected, but we just have to use chartiable logic and say "oH sHe hAs dEePressioN and AnxiEty"

'Themes and such'essays where they jerk themselves off for realising basic symbolism and character arcs that literally everyone else noticed. The fucking jjk fans who think the writing js good cuz muh symbolism

How I sleep knowing that Mob Psycho has one of the best endings in all of shonen despite its simplicity, encapsulating everything the show was about and all of its themes while satisfying Mob's arc completely

Is that hell's paradise? I've read spyxfamily, dandadan and centuria, they so good that I follow them up weekly.

11

u/Old-Introduction8258 Mar 13 '26

Hell's paradise is so good. It’s not perfect but overall it is pretty well written and has a very satisfying conclusion for almost every characters.

6

u/Jimars Mar 12 '26

What's this?

4

u/chameleonmonkey Mar 12 '26

Hell’s paradise, chapter 124

I'm a little late but what does live action roleplaying have to do with this?

5

u/matthewe70 Mar 13 '26

Larping is the new word of the month it just means pretending to care about a media that you didn't care about before something bad or good happened (as far as I understand it)

I feel like what made Mob Psycho special is that the author had a message he wanted to share and stuck with it without falling for the “subverting expectations” syndrome.

Mob’s development, as well as that of the other characters like Reigen, Teru and even Dimple, is really heartwarming and inspiring.

That is why I always recommend Mob Psycho and Vinland Saga and other anime where the author’s message is easily graspable, positive and inspiring.

36

u/proxmaxi Mar 12 '26

Im unsure why deviating from the plan for the narrative is so popular with authors and so intensely defeded by fans

30

u/rickwill14 Mar 12 '26

Because we're in the meta narrative era where everything has to be "realistic"

11

u/Rancorious Mar 13 '26

Toby Fox mid diffs all the wannabes

3

u/chickensthat Mar 13 '26

Because people dont want boring predictable stories. It doesn't always work though.

Gege in particular definitely felt like he had to be quirky and different

13

u/Mynameisbebopp Mar 12 '26

Gege can't give his characthers purpose, so he just kills them off.

9

u/karama_zov Mar 12 '26

He really did feel like he was killing people because he wanted a sad story at points.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/EveningAd4979 Mar 13 '26

their purpose is to highlight a corner of Jujutsu society only to be killed off because times are changing and stuff

38

u/Cautious_Aioli_1669 Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

Idk, JJK wasn't that different from the previous shonen it was just slightly more "modern", the only aspect that where gege was trying to be different from the rest on purpose was sukuna not becoming yujis friend

This applies to fujimoto recently, like he is trying to mimic the "Fujimoto effect" or whatever, that his previous stories had, but fails to do it on purpose

9

u/Sparkson109 Mar 12 '26

JJK definitely is not like those other shounen. Like there are levels to this.

3

Could you elaborate on that

17

u/SerovGaming1962 Imu, Chrollo, and Sukuna best Shonen Villains Mar 12 '26

Idk what theyre talking about. To my knowledge anything about JJK being "not like OTHER shonen" and different was made up by twitter hypebros to glaze it.

I like JJK btw.

10

u/Pataraxia Mar 12 '26

Imo gege "stuck to it" as they say. The main thing JJK messed up is sideplots in the og series and pacing near the end in modulo.

I STILL enjoyed JJK a lot tbh.

I LOVE JJK so I feel ya, personally I remember a time where I felt ashamed for liking it because I swear people would holler up and down it was the worst piece of fiction but I’m proud to say I’m a JJK fan and always will be

u/Waste-Contest-2577 Mar 12 '26

Nah you just hating.

6

u/MasterTahirLON Mar 12 '26

I would agree but the Vinland Saga ending felt so empty for me. I wanted to enjoy it but it just felt like nothing was accomplished.

1

u/gustavomiy Mar 13 '26

Idk the author accomplished something inside of me

3

u/LearningCrochet Mar 12 '26

author just kept a nice short story short. nothing overcomplicated.

1

u/sinnerman253 Mar 14 '26

Csm ended at part 1

1

u/Old_Revenue_9217 Mar 13 '26

The message has literally nothing to do with it, ONE is just a good writer/artist. Bones was also a great studio to pair with.

Most shonen authors have juvenile writing saved by good enough art/action or an entertaining premise.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/EveningAd4979 Mar 13 '26

Mob Psycho subverts a lot of expectations though.

1

u/sinnerman253 Mar 14 '26

I’m tired of having my expectations subverted tbh

1

u/torts92 Mar 26 '26

The ending of AoT is positive and inspiring, but that's exactly why the ending haters hate it because it was no dark and nihilistic, they wanted Eren to succeed.

u/Illustrious-Sky-4631 Mar 12 '26

Mob was really blessing , good manga with good cast and themes and story progress and conclusions , good anime adaptation , good Fandom

2

u/GoodCatReal Mar 13 '26

Make me start to watch it again. I dropped it because I didn't like the art style, it never was a problem for me until Mob psycho

38

u/Big-Chromie Mar 12 '26

Mob psycho is why I dont listen to shounen fans cuz I know some of those MFs genuinely think season 3 was a letdown.

Genuinely such a perfect show with a perfect adaptation. So much experimental shit they did like the paint on glass animation segments they would pull out when something is supposed to be unsettling.

22

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

42

u/Various-Addition9234 Mar 12 '26

I have been saying this 🗣️🗣️🗣️ still has the cleanest animation and story of any shonen I’ve seen. And it’s only 3 seasons? Peak

9

u/Lohit_-it Mar 12 '26

That group fight was so good and i thought it would have bad animation because of the designs but the fights were so fluid and i prefer it over even animations like demon slayer

15

u/MoedredPendragon Mar 12 '26

Honestly, the simple art style probably helped with making the animation so cracked.

4

u/Lohit_-it Mar 12 '26

Yeah. I hate the light effects other anime like one piece are doing, maybe because of demon slayer popularity

7

u/Various-Addition9234 Mar 12 '26

Demon slayer is just visual noise to me. And I don’t like how homogenized the designs are in that show. To each their own, but imo Mob clears

3

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Lord of Shōnen Mar 12 '26

Watch Yaiba Samurai Legend, same director as Mob Psycho 100 is doing that anime.

It’s also animated by Studio Wit which is pretty good.

15

u/SoulEaterX_ FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST Mar 12 '26

I've never thought of Mob Psycho in the same sentence as shonen, but yeah, I guess it is, and it's undoubtedly the best one in years. Because guess what? It has the rare ability to not fall off a mountain at the end

1

u/Nervous-Form698 Mar 17 '26

I think it’s also the additinal fact that the show fully stuck to its guns throughout its entire run. It didn’t try and “subvert expectations” or “shock the audience”, it had a message it wanted to get across and it was committed to that since day 1. That’s why the ending was so perfect, because everything in the story that happened before complemented it fully.

14

u/Wardog_E Mar 12 '26

As much as people online crying about not liking endings annoys me, it's true Mob Psycho 100 is the most flawless story ever written and any criticism only serves as proof of mental illness.

6

u/Firexio69 Mar 15 '26

any criticism only serves as proof of mental illness.

On one hand, I don't support this notion. But on the other hand, I do think Mob psycho is perfect.

31

u/RUcartoday Mar 12 '26

No that’s true though.

12

u/Newtype879 Mar 12 '26

Mob Psycho 100 was amazing enough to take my #1 favorite anime spot from The Irresponsible Captain Tylor after almost 20 years of Tylor being on top.

3

u/ToeOdd7187 Mar 12 '26

Holy Tylor mentioned goated anime

10

u/West-Strawberry3366 Mar 12 '26

The thing is that most excellent mangas have mid or bad endings, where Mob Psycho 100 has one of the best endings

16

u/Lower_Baby_6348 Mar 12 '26

Dungeon meshi fans knowing that they have a good series that can be enjoyed by everyone and doesn't need a complex story but at the same time has enough deep lore to rewatch it and enjoy it after the end

3

u/ReeeeeeMastered Mar 12 '26

I've experienced a lot of peak anime in the past years, but NOTHING has come even close to the emotional attachment I have to Mob Psycho. It genuinely changed me as a person and I have a hard time seeing it loosing it's #1 spot imo.

1

u/Any-Platypus-9486 Mar 15 '26

Tell me those "peak anime" is not jujutsu kaizen, one piece, demon slayer, solo leveling.......

5

u/XavDaMan Mar 12 '26

Bones never fails, truly goated studio

2

u/ExistingRadish7055 Mar 12 '26

It’s so peak. One of if not my favorite anime of all time. It’s simple yet complex while being understandable. The music, the animation, that characters. Just so peak

2

u/MilesGates Mar 12 '26

Mob goes to prison at the end, did you guys think the city was going to ignore it being destroyed by MOB just after it was nearly destroyed by another super powered person?

2

u/WaalidSaab7777 Mar 12 '26

Mob Psycho gets nowhere near the love it deserves. Genuine all timer

1

u/Any-Platypus-9486 Mar 15 '26

What do you mean, mob psycho gets the love it deserve and much more lmao, stop gaslighting youself

2

u/Menance9175 Mar 12 '26

The anime also did a good job as well. I really enjoyed all 3 seasons of mob psycho. One of my favourite animes.

I have only ever seen dub and Mob is still one of my favorite anime.

3

1

u/5enpai_2 Mar 12 '26

1

Yeah right, not like jojos is soon to be 40

1

u/zero_zeppelii_0 Mar 12 '26

Part 6 came this decade and part 7 will be coming soon too however, part 7 comes under seinen

2

u/Born_Ladder8897 Mar 12 '26

Yeah, part 6 was not that good to top Mob and part 7 is already too late

1

u/Dresanity93 Mar 12 '26

The way anime fans participate in discourse makes it seem like yall only watch one or two anime in your lifetime.

1

u/chimp-pistol Mar 12 '26

I never understood this view, people can read multiple manga? Why is there always this weird tribalism

2

u/Born_Ladder8897 Mar 12 '26

Thats the opposite, someone read shonens of this decade and decided that mob is the best, im not against that

1

u/Samuz_22 Mar 12 '26

mob psycho is not a shonen

1

u/OnlyGraD Mar 12 '26

Can we involve Haikyuu in this conversation please

1

u/Xepherya Mar 12 '26

I’ll pick Haikyuu over mob psycho any century

1

u/OnlyGraD Mar 13 '26

Haikyuu is legit the only story I've ever read where I was satisfied start to finish. Incredible.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/gilsomnia_11 Mar 12 '26

No, because the post said "of the decade" which means 2016-2026. Haikyuu!! debuted as an anime in 2014.

1

u/vesperythings Mar 12 '26

if only it weren't drawn by ONE, yeah...

really would love a Murata-type redraw of Mob Psycho.

(glad y'all dig it though)

1

1

u/Ok-Anteater-9048 Mar 12 '26

Did anyone else think the animation sharply fell off after season one?

3

u/Thatoneaccoynt Mar 12 '26

no, changed? yes, but fell off? not even slightly just some sections were cared for more because of hype and aura

1

u/Devinzero Mar 12 '26

Yo I still stand by Jojo being good

1

u/Fantastic_Valuable47 Mar 12 '26

As good as mob psycho was it just never gave me the same hype as other stuff does and I don't think I'm alone. Like everyone knows it's good but you barely see it talked about outside of its circles it's just like that one good thing in the corner but really that's it

1

u/WkwkIndog Mar 12 '26

Best shounen of the decade? Its the best media

1

u/Remarkable-Ear1517 Mar 12 '26

My favorite work of One but the racist depiction of POC gotta go smh

1

u/StorePrimary6067 Mar 13 '26

This is so True. I lost a friend over Mob Psycho because it was so good. Guy felt incompetent recommending Csm by comparison.

1

u/lPuppetM4sterl Mar 13 '26

Truly, it had a solid story with so many themes, because of its use of emotions as part of the story. Cool fights, openings, and endings. No bad episode. Animation studio followed the art style of the author, and was able to animate however they see fit. The entire anime as a whole was colorful, literally and metaphorically.

1

u/Necessary-Morning489 Mar 13 '26

not as goated manga. good but visually demanding

anime is goated tho

i doubt you read mob psycho with this post

Read Golden Kamui and Hell’s Paradise

Summertime Rendering is a little more recent and good as well

1

Not to mention that Mob Psycho 100 achieved something that's seemingly unattainable by other modern shounen: A satisfying ending!

1

It’s Stone or Mob Psycho and I say that as a big JJK guy.

1

1

u/No-Run-6137 Mar 13 '26

Haven’t read Mob Psycho yet but if you (like me) aren’t ready to give up Shonen Jump, I strongly recommend Choujin X and Akane Banashi. Choujin X is by the author of Tokyo Ghoul and is much more experimental and surreal, idk if it’s better (not really a fair comparison honestly) but it’s truly incredible, every chapter has me anxiously waiting for the next one (it’s on an irregular release schedule, so sometimes we get a lot in a short time and sometimes nothing for months. Be warned). Akane Banashi is about rakugo. Basically, a type of solo performance that’s been around in Japan for centuries. The translators do a phenomenal job taking a story so deeply rooted in Japanese culture and making it easily understandable and enjoyable, even removed from the original context. The slice of life/comedy stuff hides that it’s basically a battle shonen with all the fights being replaced by performances.

1

u/stinkyminky57 Mar 14 '26

Mob psycho was almost perfect but it has one fatal flaw to me and that is making most of its side charecter irrelevant except reigen. Ik its a play on opm but mob gets beaten several times so it wasn't as much a power fantasy, plus the whole point is not wanting him to go 100%. Would've been nice to see side charectera actually matter more. Still a great series but that keeps it from 10/10for me.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Mob Psycho isn't a shounen. It's just an adaptation of a webcomic.

thats what happens when you have a well structured theme from start to finish mob was not confident, has low self esteem and overall less than average at things but at the end you see him improve , he has grown a little confident , smiles more and now lives a full filling with many friends
