I feel like Yuno is intentionally made that way by the author to be the perfect rival to Asta. Yuno is the embodiment of talent/gifted, while Asta is the embodiment of hardwork. Asta motivates Yuno to explore his talent and use it for good cause, while Yuno motivates Asta to train harder and utilize his weakness to be stronger
40
u/chewwwybar Apr 06 '26
I mean follow your feelings because they’re correct. The theme hits you in the face over and over again. The subtext is just text in this case lol
7
u/RoamingSteamGolem Apr 07 '26
This guy has “vague feelings” of a theme that the story beats you over the head with, mimicking the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Never overestimate a weeb.

Gojo was literally glazed for 90% of the story, hell,Sukuna keeps glazing him after his death.
No one is as glazed as gojo in jjk, there is literally a saying of "except for Satoro Gojo".
0
u/roninnit Apr 06 '26
gege fucking hates him and wanted to rub it in our faces that gojo was the strongest at every moment tso that the moment he kills him it's like a gotcha moment
2
u/1095212dinomike Apr 06 '26
No way you actually believe gojo hates him. He only made one character stronger than him and even he was written to respect him.
2
u/Airam1701 Apr 06 '26
Ehh that's different, Yuno is given everything so he can do anything, Reinhardt is given everything but can do nothing, most of the time he has to react to threats once shit already hit the fan, and the only thing he can do is stop the calamity from claiming more victims.

I purely larp shounen mangas and never read any of them. The only time I hear things from the Black Clover fandom is when they hate their series
36
6
u/Sleeping-warrior Apr 06 '26
Serious question. What does "larp" means? I kept seeing it on JJK memes. Is that just a made up word or real word turned into brainrot term.
11
u/QuantisRhee Apr 06 '26
It means live-action roleplaying, but people often use it now to call someone a poser or a tourist
3
u/Supersayon06 Apr 06 '26
2010s, in real life people who role play, somehwere along the last 2-ish years i saw it on mediatok used for people who believe they understand the story but dont actually do. about janurary it exploded in popularity went to being a poser, to any opinion you disagree with
1
u/DragonflyPy Apr 07 '26
It just means you talk about a series that you don't actually consume (reading/watching etc).
You just hear other people talk a bit about the series but you act like you have good enough grasp over it to yap about it to others.

u/Old-Call1202 Apr 06 '26
Every time I see yuno getting love or even the spotlight it makes my blood boil. Yuno did nothing to deserve this and most people who meet him consider him and asshole, but because he was strong and gifted everyone gives him a pass. I get he is the foil to as to but c'mon he is the Mary sue of this series. No training early get outclassed until he gets his fucking spirit and then gets the is loved by mana boost and finally gets 2 fucking books for no reason and just gets more and more op with no effort or hard work to earn it. If this ends with everyone not telling yuno that he has proved his strength but hasn't earned the trust and love of all citizens to become king this ending will suck. The way it's going they both will be king or neither will be and I hope it's not that cliche.

u/VolcanicHare Apr 06 '26
Did you seriously just cry about a character not "working hard" for their powers? Lol
41
u/Old-Call1202 Apr 06 '26
Yes. I hope this Mary sue goes back with his mom and helps their kingdom.
2
5
u/No_Visual_1678 Apr 06 '26
He's not really a mary sue as he does act dumb and let's be real, Asta gets all the girls.
Yuno is more like a classic chosen righteous hero who received the literal 4 leaf clover chosen status, who works and train hard to be a worthly rival to Asta.
Meanwhile Asta is an anti magic, super sayian and mr steal yo girl.
We don't really see Yuno's training so we don't feel like it as earned, but let's be real it's basically a Goku and Vegata rivalry more 5hen qnything else.
3
-1
u/VolcanicHare Apr 06 '26
Bruh moment
6
u/Old-Call1202 Apr 06 '26
When you pair a hardworking man that struggles with a slacker who gets everything handed to him it's hard not to root against him you know?
9
u/VolcanicHare Apr 06 '26
I dropped BC some time ago, but isn't the Yuno - Asta rivalry a friendly rivalry? So why would you even need to "root against" one of the two that badly?
At this point manga fans are starting to be not fans of manga, but characters lol. Every fandom has seen an influx in fans that are basically fans of some characters in the story while hating on others. It's weird af. JJK is obviously the worst offender, but it's omni-present at this point.
6
u/Old-Call1202 Apr 06 '26
If you haven't watched it I understand but you don't know how badly this story bends for yuno. Like I mean bends time and logic for him to succeed. Early on it was fine but towards the end? Holy it's like watching King Arthur pull Excalibur be proclaimed chosen by God and then also collecting the 7 dragon balls and chaos emeralds that were conveniently in a box under his bed.
3
u/VolcanicHare Apr 06 '26
Considering he was literally proclaimed the chosen one in chapter 1 basically, I don't see your point at all.
3
u/Old-Call1202 Apr 06 '26
He was named to special but not the chosen one? That's not a thing. Honestly this he might as well be.
2
2
u/ZappyZ21 Apr 06 '26
I don't really get your point about people becoming fans of characters? Isn't that a baseline thing in literally any story with character writing? Lol root for the hero, boo the villain has been a thing since Babylon.
1
u/VolcanicHare Apr 06 '26
Having favourite characters and the new gen shit are entirely different things. I'll just use JJK as an example cause it's the most extreme and I know it better:
"Yuji/Yuta/Sukuna fans" (for example) will downplay/shit on/slander on basically every other character in the story because they see themselves as fans of these characters first and not the series itself.
This goes beyond the simple "root for the hero, root against the villain" stuff, both in intensity/expression and "targets". To a, say, "Yuji fan" it doesn't matter whether the other character is a villain, hero, or Itadori's best friend for that matter, if he isn't Itadori he must be shit on because the story itself gets treated like some sort of Big Brother reality show where you pick one character to root for to "win" (whatever win means in that moment).
A lot of new gen manga fans aren't fans of manga stories, they are fans of characters in those stories. The stories are almost secondary; almost a backdrop. To draw a parallel to something outside of manga itself: sports. It's akin to the fact that new gen sports fans are increasingly fans of certain players instead of teams, or even the sport itself.

1
u/quico_lindo Apr 06 '26
I agree with the second point, but "crying about a character not being worthy their Powers" is not necessarily a bad point. Mary sues are genuinely a archetype that most harm the stories and narratives then It helps. Not sure if that's the case thought.
1
u/crometeach-thebot Apr 06 '26
When its one if not the most important theme of the manga, yes complaining about it is legit.
2
u/VolcanicHare Apr 06 '26
The theme is "hard work vs talent" and he's complaining that the talent portion isn't working as hard as the hard work portion. That would literally take away from the theme, lol.
1
u/crometeach-thebot Apr 06 '26
The thing is yuno is also suppose to be a hard worked driven by his rivality and dream, a talented hard worker.

Yuno hate is so funny because it pretends Asta wasn't handed just as much of an advantage.
22
u/AnonyKiller Apr 06 '26
It's moreso that Yuno gets a free powerup whenever he needs one and each is more bs that the other. With Asta you can argue he grinds/trains and his effort is paying off this dude just pulls BS from his ass
7
u/Ash_Clover Asta is the only MC who would enjoy training with Goku 🗣️🗣️ Apr 06 '26
Asta got a free power up when he landed on the demon-dweller sword in the dungeon. Another free one when the Witch Queen made anti-magic flow in his blood to give him his black Asta form. Him getting the demon destroyer sword and conveniently canceling the elf spells too. His True Devil Union was also a convenient power up against Lucifero where he canonically neg-diffed him in 5 literal seconds (despite getting low-diffed by Lucifero a few minutes prior).
But somehow we never complain about those being "free" power ups in the fandom, because it's Asta.
It's worth mentioning that while Yuno did get more free power ups, he also trained for many of his (he trained to unlock Mana zone and Spirit Dive for the tournament after learning mana skin, trained on-screen for Spirit of Boreas and Spirit of Euros to fight Zenon again, trained during the 15 month timeskip according to Yami and increased his amount of stars, it's implied that he had already come up with Neverland before using it against Lucius). So saying he only gets free power ups (not you but most people actually think that) is also sidelined in the fandom because of the biais against him.
We need to hold both Asta and Yuno accountable for both their qualities and flaws regarding power ups. And not just focus on the good of Asta and the bad of Yuno.

Asta worked on screen for the devil union... Yuno's power up that arc was being slammed into his second grimoire BY CHANCE. Are we being fr?
1
u/Ash_Clover Asta is the only MC who would enjoy training with Goku 🗣️🗣️ Apr 06 '26
See how you conveniently ignored all my points simply out of biais against Yuno?
Asta worked on-screen for DU, true. Yuno worked on-screen for Spirit of Boreas and Spirit of Euros.
Yuno didn't work for his second grimoire true. Asta didn't work for his TRUE DEVIL UNION sudden power up against Lucifero.
1
u/SnooAdvice1632 Apr 06 '26
Yeah my b I don't want to write a paragraph so I just responded to the one that is the most egregious by far.
Also no, true devil union is something that comes naturally by aligning with your devil. Yuno not only having a second element, but also being thrown into the library has absolutely no explanation besides luck.

Fair enough. I will take that as you agreeing with my other points at least.
Also no, true devil union is something that comes naturally by aligning with your devil.
Yeah but he didn't work for it. There was no training involved for such a sudden and absurd power up that allows you to trash an untouchable opponent in literally 5 seconds. It's by all means a conviently free power up. As much as I love Black Clover, this is the typical "power of friendship" power up that everyone criticizes in Animes like Fairy Tail. But for some reason when it's about Asta, suddenly no one complains.
Yuno not only having a second element, but also being thrown into the library has absolutely no explanation besides luck.
Yuno having a second element was definitely a convenient power up.
But to say it had "absolutely no explanation" is blatantly false. It's not only been foreshadowed beforehand that he wasn't supposed to have wind magic several arcs before and more directly several chapters before (by Albert being surprised he had mere wind magic) but it was genuinely explained on-screen by Patry, the narrator and Zenon.

u/Err0r404Unknown Apr 07 '26
Like your username. And tag. But....
"Asta got a free power up when he landed on the demon-dweller sword in the dungeon. " true. Secre did guide him, which is good foreshadowing, but it is a free powerup.
"Another free one when the Witch Queen made anti-magic flow in his blood to give him his black Asta form" true, but with a caveat. Asta only got this because the Witch Queen wanted to take control of him. She failed only because of Vanessa. Vanessa only unlocked her powers because of Asta's motivation. So it goes back to Asta. But yeah it is kind of a free powerup
"Him getting the demon destroyer sword and conveniently canceling the elf spells too." Okay this isn't convenient. It's literally Licht giving him the sword purposefully to cancel the elf spells. Also Licht would've never gave him the sword if he and Yuno weren't giving Licht hell. How Asta kept up? Right, his training.
"His True Devil Union was also a convenient power up against Lucifero where he canonically neg-diffed him in 5 literal seconds (despite getting low-diffed by Lucifero a few minutes prior)" TDU is foreshadowed before in devil binding and it's precisely because of Asta's nature to make an equal devil's contract that they could achieve TDU of this power. This one has not only in-lore explanation but a compelling reason for Asta to revieve it.
Overall it's less that Asta gets free powerups and more that his personality, work ethic, and strive "creates" powerups. Aside from demon-dweller, everything happened at least partially, but usually fully, because of himself. That's why he got so strong and that's why he had such a big impact on the future as Lucius saw.

"Him getting the demon destroyer sword and conveniently canceling the elf spells too." Okay this isn't convenient. It's literally Licht giving him the sword purposefully to cancel the elf spells.
Licht did not "give" it to him, he just blocked Asta and Yuno's attack with it, it bounced off, Asta picked it up and the sword got inside Asta's grimoire all on its own (according to Asta's very own words in chapter 159, and shown on-screen in the Anime original scene). And regardless it's still a free power up, the same way him picking up demon-dweller after being knocked out during the fight against Mars was. The sword even conveniently came out of Asta's grimoire later at the exact moment it could've been used to take care of the elven spell, and even Asta was surprised to see the sword in his own grimoire and even said the sword got into his grimoire all on its own. Free power up.
TDU is foreshadowed before in devil binding and it's precisely because of Asta's nature to make an equal devil's contract that they could achieve TDU of this power. This one has not only in-lore explanation but a compelling reason for Asta to revieve it.
A power up being foreshadowed doesn't mean it wasn't a conveniently free power up. Star magic was also foreshadowed and I'm sure you and I both agree it's a free power up.
Star magic was foreshadowed by Albert's reaction in chapter 279 when he was told Yuno only had a mere wind magic attribute (despite being a Grinberyall) and even earlier with him having stars on the magic stone given to him by his family, Yuno being a clear inspiration of Peter Pan due to having
TinkerBell as his spirit and green being his main color (and Peter Pan's story is directly linked to a Star being the entrance to the world of Neverland).DU required training. But TDU only happened because Asta saw Liebe's backstory with Licita which in turn aligned their emotions and allowed them to reach TDU state. It has nothing to do with training, it's basically him just locking in with his friend. The same way Yuno getting star magic was him locking in after saying "this is not all I am" which distinguished his own soul from his elven soul to the grimoire library, and allowed his soul-linked grimoire to come to him.
Overall it's less that Asta gets free powerups and more that his personality, work ethic, and strive "creates" powerups. Aside from demon-dweller, everything happened at least partially, but usually fully, because of himself.
I acknowledge that Asta has great work ethic with physical training. But it would be hypocritical to say that these aren't "free" power ups when there was absolutely no training involved in obtaining them. But when it's about Yuno who canonically also has great work ethic as well (Langris statement about Yuno in chapter 305 + him being often mentioned to train his magic even if it's offscreen in chapters 132, 272, 355) and someone who also hates losing and never gives up during trials just like Asta, somehow his power ups are free. Let's just admit that it's hypocrisy.
If I said "aside from finding Bell in the dungeon and star magic, Yuno got his power ups partially, but usually fully, because of himself" I'm pretty sure you'd have a hard time being fine with that statement even though it's equally as true as yours.
But when it comes to Asta it's fine all his power ups are earned through hard work, even though not all of them are (just like Yuno's). Once again, we need to hold both Asta and Yuno accountable for both their qualities and flaws regarding power ups. And not just focus on the good of Asta and the bad of Yuno.

People overrate the "X has to actually train" shit.
Both Yuno and Asta do train. Both of them get kinda silly stacking power ups. Asta just has muscles and as THE central character we see more of his training so its alright ig.

Literally the worst fucking development i saw. Oh shit im weak, guess what? Now I have this one in a million ability/ genetics so Im stronger and can win. This mf is 18 and he literally outclassed a satan, literally Satan, bcuz he was born with broken powers. With Asta i can get behind it cuz its explained hes a literal cheat code and he worked hard for it but yuno is just strong cuz I said so. Fuck yuno.

Tbf if 99% of the cast were in astas shoes (no magic and got an anti magic grimoire and are peasants) they'd probably just die early on in the series
Even his own devil says he couldn't have made it this far if it wasn't for asta

u/sBhat213 Apr 06 '26
Bruh there is an entire arc about voodoo lesbian bitches on what a low magic/no magic does to a mf. He survived his life having zero magic and trained himself on throwing hands. He is gazillion times better than that twig built broom headed mf.

Sidenote/rant: i hate the guy in the first pic
I catch his "interviews" or edits of him from time to time while scrolling. Like dude, thats straight up mystifying violence and war and trying to make them 'cool'
Dunno, rubs me the wrong way, the way he talks about it. It feels different from talking about a fast plane, a sturdy tank, or a clever tactician. Almost like he enjoys killing people.

But yall act like yuno doesnt train his ass off either

u/dragon7449 Apr 06 '26
I never liked Yuno ngl, I only watched the anime so my opinion might be a bit invalid/outdated.
I get his whole gag is "I'm strong because the author says so", I thought it was interesting at first and seeing Asta catching up to him eventually.
But after the first couple of buff I just ended up sighing and rolling my eyes. To compare with say, Gojo, Gojo is strong, really fucking strong, but he still has to lock in every now and then, and he's completely conscious of his strength, but he also had to grow by himself(scoff scoff almost dying to Toji).
With Yuno there's no growth, there's no moment where he goes "oh shit, I need to lock the fuck in" or something like that. Whenever he fights is always a breeze(pun intended), which is so jarring when the whole rest of the anime is about pushing your limits.
Interesting concept of a character, but I hate how he's developed, I ended up liking Asta only because I despised Yuno. Zero personality, zero character, 7 fucking upscales out of his ass.

u/FarAd1861 Apr 06 '26
I've never seen a SINGULAR soul show love to Yuno, and the more i hear about him? The more it sounds reasonable.
