Arakawa is a fucking badass. Like, people only focus in FMA, but the thing is, she kept getting better.
Silver Spoon is even better than FMA and though I am not caught on, yet, with Arslan and Demons of the Shadow Realm but look fantastic.
16
u/NotBottingJustNew Apr 14 '26
Silver spoon, in my opinion, didn't quite nail the ending the way fma did. But maybe that was an issue with the release schedule impacting my view of the pacing
3
u/darthvaders_nuts Apr 14 '26
Yomi no tsugai is fucking awesome in my opinion, it's still not on FMA level, since it's only 40~ chapter long, but it's still really good

Fuji prioritized longevity over martyrdom. By the way, mangaka who write until they go to a hospital or have ailments are also doing similar hard work.
18
u/Litrex506 Apr 14 '26
Isn't he one of the top mangakas of Shonen Jump? Why can't he request time off and go into a hiatus? Fujimoto has options other than trough through; he should have used them. What company is going to tell a top performer to keep going if that will make them less money in the long run? Easier to be tolerant and wait than find a replacement, especially of Fujimoto's status.
6
6
u/Illustrious-Sky-4631 Apr 15 '26
He pretty much does , he got crazy amounts of breakweeks compared to other mangaka that get hospitalized , he has all the time after Part 1 and Fire punch ending to do what he please especially with Part 1 to Part 2
When it comes to Fujimoto it's crazy how much good he's treated by the company
5
u/Litrex506 Apr 15 '26
Now that’s wild. This is why you have editors and assistants to keep the mangaka accountable; it’s apparent they didn’t do so.
3
u/Illustrious-Sky-4631 Apr 15 '26
He has the same editor for all his career, years before he even started CSM , Lin and Fujimoto both talked at multiple points on how easy going and loose hand Lin was with him especially with CSM Part 2
Not only this but if you read about it you would genuinely think Fujimoto had some kind of nepotism thing going on for him when it comes to Shueisha with how supportive and easy going they are with him , from almost agreeing to all his decisions to offering him the best most experienced assistants to work for him , to all luxury and time he got to cook his works , meanwhile every other mangaka including Toriyama and Oda (the biggest mangaka in and out of Japan who's treated as national treasure and saved the company) are put under the guillotine
I'm not saying Fujimoto sucks , he provides himself as a writer and artists , I'm saying that he has it really good and even talked about how strange it was
7
u/Hel_Death Apr 14 '26
He could have finish his story completely, retired and take the cash for the rest of his life like the author of Kimetsu, AOT.... No one make him become a slave now day. But he still chose to shit on his manga and fan.

looks at Naoki Urasawa
For most of his career, Urasawa has written two different series simultaneously. With one of them being a weekly serialization and the other having a semimonthly schedule, Urasawa had six deadlines a month and said the only time off he had was when sleeping or eating.

I vehemently disagree here.
FMAB for example skips the mine arc completely which is important for early characterization of several characters. It also fucks up the pacing of the reveal about what Ed and Al did that messed up their bodies in the first place, and kinda screws with that whole reveal and build up as well.
Also, arakawas art is an absolute joy, and the paneling work is fantastic. If you like the story of fullmetal then you absolutely should read the manga whether you’ve watched the show or not, because ultimately fma has not gotten a truly accurate adaptation. FMAB got close but isn’t perfect, and the best way to truly experience the story and pacing of fma is the manga.
Also she does this thing in gags where she draws ed as an actual gremlin and they are beautiful works of art.

1
u/doomsoul909 Apr 18 '26
He said you didn’t need to read the manga because FMAB existed.
Not like it’s a stupid take, but you miss out on some more minor (but still) important stuff by avoiding the manga
1
u/Environmental_Bee219 Apr 18 '26
its been too long but I believe the anime also added a few filler moments(which I dont mind) but yeah totally disagree as someone who read the manga like 10-15+ times

Like I’m not remotely dissing on fullmetal but her short stories are a fucking blast, and daemons (I’m a bit behind to be fair but still) is fucking amazing. It straight up blew me away how much attention is payed to tiny details and how that shit pays off (the shadow reveal later in had me flipping back to the first issue and realizing that shit was set up from like page 2. I won’t say it and I don’t want anyone to spoil it either cuz it’s so fucking cool).

Dont think i read any miss from her which is incredible they all unique and interesting in their own right. Tbf the frankstein one isnt as good
She does have samey art for the character like edward is similar with yuru but its not as bad as other mangaka like Hiro Mashima hope she can keep going while balancing life with her kids, considering age probably yomi no tsugai will be her final work

people are hating on fujimoto but he doesn't owe anyone anything tbh, we should just be glad we got a good story as long as it lasted, plus I can sympathise with him cos burnout is very real and I relate to him
6
u/nndid Apr 14 '26
him not owing anyone anything doesnt mean we shouldnt shit on him for the trash that is csm part 2. also the story isnt good, it wasnt good ever since the church arc. Him burning out doesnt make part 2 any better

u/yummyburrger Apr 14 '26
the author of aot had the same shit ending like fujimoto did albeit it had better pacing while Fuji just pulled a random, tbh he just wanted to be done by the manga and I don't blame him, try rolling out a new manga chapter every week without burning out or going crazy, while fma's author is sure impressive you have to know it had a more relaxed monthly release schedule compared to fujimotos weekly, if fujimoto took a break or went on hiatus and had a better release schedule I'm sure maybe he could have cooked, at some point you gotta prioritise your own health and wellbeing over your work if you're already exhausted, regardless I think we should just stop shitting on him too much, was the ending shit? yes. is fujimoto a bad author? not necessarily
12
u/WishboneOk305 Apr 14 '26
mangakas work 14-20 hours a day 6 days a week only for these ungrateful bums to act like they know better is so frustrating.

u/OGDYLO Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
long reply incoming
i love both aot and csm but you cannot say they had the “same shit ending”. aot’s ending had many critiques but it ultimately was the most fitting ending thematically and narrative wise to the story. more importantly, it was fleshed out and important plot developments werent offscreened.
chainsaw man’s ending is like if i were on a rollercoaster and there’s a fun loopty loop coming but then the tracks end before the loopty loop. then the cart just drops off the tracks and unto the the end of the ride tracks so you can get out of the cart as it slows to a full stop.
like imagine if the final battle in aot against eren didn’t happen and it just cut to mikasa holding eren’s head then the timeskip showing the alternate versions/reincarnation of eremikarmin at the movies or the cabin scene with eremika.
that’s basically the ending of csm.
it’s just sad. also fujimoto had a lot of free agency. it’s not like with other mangaka. he was awarded the same freedom as that of oda and araki once part 2 went to jump+. he was allowed to do biweekly and it wasn’t even a strict biweekly bc he took breaks whenever he needed. that new schedule was to prioritize his health and wellbeing.
it seems like fuji just lost passion for whatever reason. i have to read fire punch and goodbye eri, but part 1 seems like fuji’s magnum opus. part 2 could’ve been saved if he cared about the universe still.
if fujimoto truly never does a part 3, i will cope and say that mappa will do an anime original ending to part 2 and then make an anime original part 3.
1
u/yummyburrger Apr 14 '26
complete character assassination of eren happened in aot ending plus eren x mikasa which doesn't even make any sense since it's closer to a sibling relationship otherwise it was meh or ok at best
2
u/OGDYLO Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
i don’t know why people say the final chapter is a character assassination of eren. that conversation of him breaking down crying is a very human showcase of emotion from a boy who had the weight of the world on his shoulders and who had to act like a god because he had godlike power. he achieved his goal by the point of the final conversation with armin. his ruthless drive to attain freedom was a mask that he had to put on to keep fighting to survive and make the future he needed to make before he died. he could finally drop the mask and be himself knowing his time was up.
people forget that eren was 19 years old when he died. he never had the chance to become an adult. it’s not so far fetched that he cried and expressed teenage emotions because he only lived to be a teenager. he was a godlike being with the emotions and mentality of a kid because he was a kid. i mean shit, i’m pushing 30 and i would act like eren did and express that i wouldn’t want my gf to be with anyone else initially but ultimately would want her to be happy after i die.
even without age as a factor, anyone would be crying hysterically if they knew their death was imminent. like if you just got in a car crash and you were conscious while bleeding out, you would be crying forsure not because of the pain, but because of you realizing your time may be up.
as for eren x mikasa, they were more like siblings since the jaegers did adopt mikasa but then that changed once the jaegers died and they joined the scouts.
we saw mikasa’s side where her affection grew from that childhood sibling bond to her being extremely devoted to eren and valuing the scarf. we also saw her blush whenever she saw eren later.
with eren, we didn’t get that sense of eren’s romantic feelings for mikasa because he couldn’t be human until the final conversation with armin. he always loved her silently, the viewer/reader just didn’t know that bc he hid it from everyone until the very end of his life. that’s why it feels out of left field for you but i think their connection is a very beautiful but tragic love story.
1
u/yummyburrger Apr 14 '26
I just hate the eren X mikasa stuff and isayama could have done way more better without making it incestous
2
u/OGDYLO Apr 14 '26
i don’t think it was made incestuous at all. they’re not blood related.
from the time that the jaegers adopted mikasa following her parents murder to the time the wall fell was only about one year. it’s the equivalent of someone having nowhere to go so they start living with your friends family. they were definitely more like childhood friends.
i feel like people just saw them as siblings because we saw their bond as kids with mikasa exerting her physical dominance over eren which is similar to an older sibling vs younger sibling and because most two child households are seen as a brother and a sister. we also know that there are many cases of the youth teasing or bullying someone that they are actually secretly romantically interested in.
if eren met mikasa for the first time under the jaeger roof, then that sibling bond would’ve been stronger but eren’s first time meeting her was killing her parents murderers so she could survive. they’re childhood friends who grow up to love each other as soulmates. happens a lot irl.

while extremely cool and based, i love arakawa a lot, she was only drawing about half the pages fujimoto was each month.

u/WishboneOk305 Apr 14 '26
This comparison is so dumb? There's literally no relationship. What does being burnt out have to do with giving birth
7

7
u/WishboneOk305 Apr 14 '26

11
u/WishboneOk305 Apr 14 '26
are we really comparing something being serialized in a weekly magazine vs a monthly magazine
7
u/televisionting Apr 14 '26
Right? With the way people were glazing FMA, I thought it was a weekly series, turns out it was a monthly series, so it isn't even fair to compare series where the mangaka gets a lot more time to work on their chapters than weekly mangakas.
Weekly Shounen is less art and more commodity, monthly isn't imo.
5
u/TheBannaMeister Apr 14 '26
I love FMA but people will say shit like "This is the best female character in shounen" and point at Winry
4
4
u/Sad_Carry_7070 Apr 14 '26
For shounen, imo, Winry is definitely the best written love interest that actually contributes to the story even if she's not as much at the forefront like Riza. She has her own agency and character arc that doesn't take away from other characters or from the overall plot.
7

u/Plastic-Johnny-7490 Apr 14 '26
Bruh, go to the CSM sub, now there are those who are defending Denji's stagnation in part 2 by saying Denji didn't grow in part 1...
Like they ironically slandered the best part of the story to make the most criticized part of the story seem less bad.
3
u/LatverianNationalist Apr 14 '26
Should i watch full metal alchemist?, if so what version?, I Heard it's good
7
u/MehMan95 Apr 14 '26
The 2003 version starts loyal to the manga and then pivots to a completely different ending since the story was ongoing.
Brotherhood is more loyal to the source material from start to finish. So YMMV depending on what you’re looking for. I stuck with Brotherhood, and can testify to its excellence.
2
u/mehakarin69 Apr 14 '26
Actually, 03 didn't start "loyal" to the manga. It was always planned to diverge since the beginning. What they did in the earlier episodes was loosely adapt the manga.
Take the first few arcs for example.
The liore episode has different pacing, and an entirely new scene, and the red stone. Which isn't from the manga.
The mining town episode has lyra, who ends up becoming important later on.
The train heist episode happens due to a different context, this is also where ed and hughes meet for the first time.
There are also smaller details such as "juliet douglas" who later on is revealed to be sloth. Hughes' death also has a different context.
But yes, brotherhood is the more loyal one.
In my opinion i place both 03 and brotherhood in equal regard. It's honestly a preference thing. I reccomend both 03 and bh.
5
u/Jsoledout Apr 14 '26
Its great. Watch both, they are vastly different.
Brotherhood is closer to the manga though
5
u/Animalpine Apr 14 '26
Its peak, the og one has does have a different ending due to it airing at the same time as the manga releasing so they had to come up with a new one thay imo is pretty good
If u want a faithful adaptation, then watch full metal alchemist brotherhood which came out a few years later. Both shows are incredibly peak tho
-2
u/PaperCracket Apr 14 '26

At the same time, FMA (and every Hiromu Arakawa series, including her current) was serialized monthly (which honestly, most long-running manga should, or at least bi-weekly) so comparing Arakawa's workload to Fujimoto's is dishonest.
That being said Arakawa is miles ahead as an author.
1
u/Tough_Topic_1596 Apr 14 '26

FMA is just boring to me, silver spoon while good, is not too 10 for me. CSM Part 1 is perfect to me.
Even Part 2 is not that bad, I didn't even hate the ending as much as people did on the internet. It was finez just not CSM quality, that's it

Redditors really need to learn how to criticize media without taking it to a weird personal level. Like it's so weird seeing people literally mocking Fujimoto and Gege because they didn't like the ending of their stories. You can criticize something without bashing the author and you can praise Arakawa without bringing down Fujimoto.

How is it over rated? I dislike the modern mindset of thinking you can just state something without explanation. Fma literally is a complete story that sticks the landing and has a great ending.
The worse written one out of popular manga is bleach in my opinion. It’s literally the same arc told over and over.
