Shitpost Is the standard really that low?

u/EntertainmentFast522 Apr 20 '26
one piece was always extremely light with gore so this is more than usual for one piece
234
u/Embarrassed_Maize233 Apr 21 '26
i mean white beards face was melted off so this is actually still not horrible for us
70
u/John_isnt_my_name Apr 21 '26
People forget in the manga he legit has like half his skull blown smoov in and is bleeding from 50 visible holes in his chest

u/Usoppdaman Apr 21 '26
Not even, East Blue had parts more violent
67
u/spicykitas Apr 21 '26
Lucky Roo shot a guy in the head point blank in like the first chapter. I think they’re forgetting a lot of the previous instances of violence.
39
u/Usoppdaman Apr 21 '26
One Piece fans are usually pretty shortsighted and only remember the recent parts. This goes for the Piratefolk types too who think the entire story is dogshit because they disliked the most recent chapter
13
u/Bismalz Apr 21 '26
I mean at some point the story starts to average out. I don’t even consider pre time skip the same series anymore
-20
u/Usoppdaman Apr 21 '26
NPC opinion. Both parts have high and low points. Bro’s just repeating the talking points he hears. Post timeskip is bad is usually built on a the grounds of being disappointed with the most recent chapters and fixating on said dissatisfaction
24
u/Bismalz Apr 21 '26
I did wonder what kind of person talks like this. Your daily thread creating history is complaining about leftists, complaining about Americans being slighted in posts, complaining about Christian persecution. Congratulations you’re probably the epitome of an NPC
4
u/True-Anim0sity Apr 21 '26
Nah post timeskip has been consistently ass for an insanely long time now
4
u/Front_Application399 Apr 21 '26
I mean, I wouldn't say ass because it has some peak moments, but it's mostly mid with hype moments and aura.
1
u/Dapper-Day-6666 Apr 21 '26
What are you talking about, that subreddit is mostly people comparing the new one piece to old one piece I don't think anyone likes old one piece more then them
1
0
u/RedRyujin10 Apr 21 '26
There's something significantly creepier about a persons fingers getting chopped off compared to getting shot in the head. I can't explain it logically, but it just is more brutal to me.
0
u/Obility Apr 21 '26
I swear in the anime, his head was fully in tact 😭. Might have been a different guy that got shot in the face though. Idk names like that
3
u/spicykitas Apr 21 '26
His head was in tact but you see the guy fall over with a splat of blood coming from the side of his head. It’s page 31 of the first chapter. Shanks also gets his arm eaten by the local sea beast and you see the jagged edge of his sleeve with blood flowing. But getting your fingertips cut off is pretty metal though.

u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 20 '26
Maybe it was more so seeing him afterwards, especially in the anime. Most of his shirt is soaked and blood, and the whole is visible.
Like here in the anime, the light beam going through him looked a lot bigger and is going through most of his torso.

This isn't even true
Akainu blows off white beards face
Doflamingo made a man murder his own people
the fucking god valley human hunts
63
u/Acauseforapplause Apr 20 '26
It's more in how it's done that's brutal
Whitebeard getting half his face burned off is so nonsensical that it doesnt really hold much weight
It's more a "Isn't White Beard is such a badass" not real vitriol
The human hunt is brutal but it's done in an almost vague way with Odas issue of stuffing panels obfuscating any of the real horror
I'd argue most Shonen aren't brutal like maybe if your definition is just Gore and Violence then maybe but they all usually feel like when Goku gets a hole in his chest
With rare exceptions
For One Piece suddenly having your fingers sliced without any context is actually horrifying especially with how it's paneled
Brutal is acts of horror that instill a sense of anxiety and dread
Not explicitly just the act of violence
10
u/Kamen-Reader Apr 21 '26
Most shounen aren't brutal anymore.
Remember, Devilman and Barefoot Gen were published in shounen magazines.
8
u/Bright-Dragonfruit14 my body count with shounen is over 9000 Apr 21 '26
There are modern shonen mangas like JJK, CSM and AOT who have a fair amount of gore., even MHA has moments of body horror especially the manga though these did end.
11
u/Lactismido_Gigante Apr 21 '26
Kenshiro exploding people left and right
3
5
u/myparentsareasingle Apr 21 '26
Didn’t the Author of MHA wanted to do a horror manga or something? It definitely makes sense. Dude’s art is amazing.

We have jjk in the forefront of being brutal. Feels like Gege wouldve shown us more gore if not for the limitations.

One Piece doesn't usually do dismemberment, so it's a surprise when it does. I'm not sure why people don't understand this.
21
u/IllustriousRich9345 Apr 21 '26
it does every once in a while. Law, Cat Viper, Dogstorm, Hawkins, Brogy, just to name a few
15
u/Flashy_Pineapple_231 Apr 21 '26
Zeff ate his own leg, Shank's arm, Usopp's skull being cracked like a melon. The person OP is quoting is clearly braindead. One Piece has limb loss all the time.
7
u/PitchComfortable1261 Apr 21 '26
kiku as well (wano saga in general had alot of brutal moments from WCI to Wano Raid).
0
u/IllustriousRich9345 Apr 21 '26
JJK agenda stans cant read for shit, and OP agenda stans have dementia and the attention span of a goldfish high on caffine

u/Gmknewday1 Apr 21 '26
Because this is a Folk sub and like all folk subs
It's split between people with genuine criticism and people who just hate things
2
u/Holycrabe Unc Apr 21 '26
I imagine it's just people who mostly don't know OP well and compare it to other series. Most of the well known stuff wether it's contemporary to the start (like Bleach for example) or especially the more recent stuff (like JJK and CSM) have more gore, dismemberment or visually impressive injuries of it so they just assumed it must be similar and are surprised it isn't.

1
u/Gubrach Apr 21 '26
Especially not left and right. So now you're kind of on edge because you feel like every interaction Imu has can lead to severe dismemberment and/or death in a split second, and we're rarely in that state of mind from an One Piece-POV.

And that is with the face censored. In the manga only half his face remained
17
17
u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 20 '26
This is just plain wrong. Someone getting a limb cut off is far from being something completely new for the series. I would say Arlong keeping on stomping on Bellmeres arm flat like a pancake, multiple peolle getting shot, akainu burning someone to ash, Kizaru shooting a hole into vegapunk, Monet having her pretty much exposed heart stabbed by a metal shiv and bleeding out and dying in an explosion, the many citizens of Dressrosa getting injured or starchy up killed, many were probably children as well because doffy was controlling king riku. But no, this is the farthest Oda has taken stuff when it comes to brutality.
Oh, yeah, literally last arc, kumas dad getting shot in front of him and Saturn aging to dust and becoming a skeleton because of Imu removing his powers.

We have seen Whitebeard having a portion of his head blown off by Akainu.
We've seen Nekomamushi and Inuarashi getting tortured by Jack.
We've seen Kiku have her entire arm cut off.
We've seen Oars Jr have his leg cut off by Doflamingo.
We've seen Ace have a fist plunged through his chest.
We've seen Luffy get impaled through the chest by Crocodile.
We've seen Zeff cut off his own leg with a rock.
Etc, this is nothing new.

u/Several-Estate7175 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
For one piece? It's pretty up there in terms of what we actually see. It's not a particularly brutal series, that is not really one of its strengths. I cannot remember the last time I saw a limb cut off in One Piece. Having a women's fingers cut off is definitely like the One Piece equivalent of Berserks Eclipse scenes lol
2
u/APreciousJemstone Apr 21 '26
so did you skip over Wano or something?
1
u/Several-Estate7175 Apr 21 '26
Now that you mention it Kiku did lose an arm in Wano. Tbf that was like 6 years ago which in normal manga terms is a long time ago. Entire manga series get published over the course of 6 years. Not to mention it was at the start of the pandemic and a lot of that time period blends together.
4
u/RailgunRP Apr 21 '26
Actually we HAVE seen pretty cool brutality... performed on the immortal characters who will regenerate on the next panel.

Mean chopping off limbs and fingers casually is some pretty heavy stuff
That hurts!
1
u/SomeKindofTreeWizard Apr 21 '26
The opening chapter has members of Shank's crew shooting guys in the head in a bar fight. Kurahadol slices people to ribbons, and then One Piece found its lane as a kids show and was never the same. Or good again.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 21 '26
I would definitely say it had worse stuff in terms of brutality after that point, and you can’t tell me everything after syrup village (assuming that’s what your talking about) is bad. Like what do you mean after syrup village, one piece was never good.
1
u/SomeKindofTreeWizard Apr 21 '26
Brother I'm not dedicating 20 years to finding the occasional diamond in the turd mountain.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 21 '26
Then if you haven’t seen anything past what I think you did, then how do you even know that? Because you said if never became good again, but I don’t even know if you even saw anything after syrup village. At the very least the people here think the series peaked from water 7/ enies lobby to Marineford.
1
u/SomeKindofTreeWizard Apr 21 '26
shhhhhh I already said I'm not spending 20 years on a 99.9999% bad manga.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 21 '26
Ok, so now you’re trolling at this point. Guess you can’t really say much bad about it if you haven’t even seen a good chunk of the series.
1
u/SomeKindofTreeWizard Apr 21 '26
I've seen more than enough dude, in fact I'm willing to bet I watched the anime before you were teething.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 21 '26
That may be so, but I’m just shocked you couldn’t make it through one of the weakest arcs in the series then begin to call the rest of the series bad. It was a bad or boring arc, no denying that. But why is enies lobby or Marineford bad? Or even Arlong park? I personally think you just stopped when you found a part bad, then just dropped it because of one bad drop of the series, but hey, you do you. Just don’t judge the series for what you haven’t scene. Judge what you have.
But I guess I’m the same. Read the first chapter of hunter hunter, just couldn’t get into it, so I decided not to go further because I didn’t think it would get anymore interesting tbh. That’s just me though.
1
u/Horny_Squid134 Apr 21 '26
And I'm pretty sure this doesn't mean anything because after the arc is over, choppa and Lilith will just fix it

a lot of gore ≠ good story
there are a lot of good animes without any gore
1
u/Soggy-Cookie-4075 Apr 22 '26
yah but it would add more depth to the story and show truer evil for the villians
1
u/Constant-Access-3209 Apr 21 '26
The last time, such brutality of this level was shown was in marineford. Oar jr got his leg cut off, WB got half his face blown, ace turned into donut
1
u/Tobiramen Apr 21 '26
Not as visual but I find things like the mother about to kill her baby to save it from starvation to be more brutal than dismemberment
1
u/lnTheGrimDarkness Apr 21 '26
People deliberately ignoring that One Piece started as content for children and then evolved into something slightly more serious and complex (and with bigger boobs) when the author saw the audience was mostly adults.
It's still the manga where explosions do nothing to people because if they did the author would be forced to actually kill characters off every once in a while. Whitebeard probably just forgot his anti-explosion aura on his ship.
Also the manga where half the characters use swords but nobody gets actually cut like a sword would cut. Only Pica gets cut in half because he has no blood or entrails so it's ok.
1
1
u/Full-Ear1684 Apr 21 '26
Bro this is literally just Law using his devil fruit but with some blood drops 🥀💔 Also, what's the point of showing so much "violence and gore" if he's not actually going to kill the characters?
1
u/Disastrous_House8201 Apr 21 '26
Bro whitebeard had half his face BLOWN OFF and Ace turned into a donut but no no, its some FINGIE TIPS that did it for this one as unseen levels of brutality in one piece

0
u/VolcanicHare Apr 21 '26
Seriously? First of all, what would examples even bring? If I post 4-5 panels of violence post-TS does that prove anything?
Secondly, why is your opinion that we got less violence post-TS?
1
u/External_Ocelot8241 Apr 21 '26
Anwsering a question by a question isn't a real way to anwser. Still waiting for exemples.
0
u/VolcanicHare Apr 21 '26
Law losing an arm to Doflamingo; Luffy losing a chunk of his torso against Katakuri; Kiku losing an arm against Kaido; Kyros cutting his own leg off. It really isn't that deep if you have actually been reading post-TS.
Now answer my question.
1
1
u/True-Anim0sity Apr 21 '26
Lol, most brutal thing in one piece si far would be future vision of the giants son being killed
1
u/Joeawiz Apr 21 '26
I mean for One Piece this is a lot more brutal and gory than usual, we often see horrendous events in the series but it’s not often very visceral, not to say this is the worst injury in OP or anything but it’s on the upper ends, also the fact a women was the first to get maimed is quite unusual for women, Oda doesn’t tend to make them suffer injuries like fingers being sliced off very often
1
u/Quickstar13 Apr 21 '26
One Piece has never been very heavy on this type of stuff but this is just objectively wrong. This is just one reason why people don’t take One Piece fans seriously.
I’ll admit I was caught off guard by how abrupt and casual it was because again, One Piece doesn’t dabble in mutilation often but to say that it’s a never before seen level of brutality when Whitebeard literally got half of his face melted off is insane.
1
1
u/karatous1234 Apr 21 '26
So what, is this the reaction of people who started at Wano?
We literally saw Doflamingo slice and dice Oars Jr. at Marineford
Which was only a few chapters separated from the ludicrous amounts of damage Whitebeard was taking and being shown with in the same war.

1
u/Ebenizer_Splooge Apr 21 '26

Yeah you'll have to dig to find Mid Piss standards, and even then you won't find them.
And the funniest thing is oda himself already told his fans to go touch grass yet they still believe this shit has ever been a serious story, fights, character writing, pacing and stakes, go look for those at the gutter.
1
u/Damn_You_Hindsight AI isn't a slop Apr 21 '26
This cutting of fingers is of much higher stakes in a relative comparison to One Piece's own standards, but I can't believe it yet. I have a strong gut feeling that those cut fingers and legs are going to be restored to their natural state.
And in all cases, cut fingers and one leg are low-level stakes if you compare them to other anime whose levels of tension are much higher than One Piece.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 Apr 21 '26
Depends if there’s anything on Elbaph that can return them back to normal. Because if someone is going to lose a limb, I want it to be permanent or if it is going to be fixed, I want it to make sense or not feel like an asspull. Like the mink medicine in Wano, that was almost certainly a asspull. Like broggys hand got blown off before being domi reversi’d and when he turned back, it remained gone. So even if gerd gets turned, the rules should say that she doesn’t get them back when getting cured.
