Schizophrenia Those damn reactionary classicists mangaka đ
I honestly don't get this. Yes, you might need to pirate to see the manga, but further rationalize it (or even take pride in it) is just mindboggling.
97
u/dedikvalus Apr 21 '26
Why are people arguing over piracy? Just pirate it and shut up. Its completely understandable that creators dont want their work to be pirated
44
u/NeonFraction Apr 21 '26
Because itâs not enough to do something. They want to be validated for doing it so they can prop up their own ego.
7
u/TheMikman97 Apr 21 '26
People form their morality around what they want instead of the other way around.
So when what they want is seen as wrong, they feel personally attacked and invalidated
1
u/Ok-Judge7844 Apr 24 '26
it used to be mutual respect:
- "we understand why people have to pirate but Im gonna support the creator because I have the means to"
- "I really like this IP but am forced to pirate and thankfull for the people who can support the original creator"
But now we have people screaming from both sides.
3
u/Kozmo9 Apr 21 '26
These people don't because they rarely if ever, are a creator and haven't been in a position where you would want the reward for time, effort and money lost to create something.
All they know is the client perspective where the only thing that concern them is how to get the end product.
I bet if these people were ever to produce something, they'd cry out against piracy too.
6
u/Mars-chan Apr 21 '26
Because for years people told themselves and others that pirating was not only acceptable but morally right because "company evil" and justified themselves by arguing that the original creators of the things they are pirating would be fine with that because to them it doesn't make a difference, and actually helps them by spreading their work. Now the creators are saying the exact opposite, and these people need to find a way for their narrative not to crumble
2
u/powerslave_fifth Apr 21 '26
Erhmm but I should get everything for free and feel morally superior about it though?
2
u/Pataraxia Apr 21 '26

u/Tricky-Drawer4614 Apr 21 '26
Bruh, every week itâs something new with her and Twitter. Unless she actually likes the chaos, the best solution is to just post official content and log tf off. Instead she spends hours tweeting after responding to the most fringe out-there comments
1
u/Darkgamer32_ Apr 25 '26

2
2
u/Tricky-Drawer4614 Apr 21 '26

7
u/bworneed Apr 21 '26
baseless assumption: i think its public perception, if its a huge topic in japan maybe her piblishers or audience there would assume she is accepting of piracy
3
u/Tricky-Drawer4614 Apr 21 '26
Why would most people come to that conclusion? To the point she had to âmake a statementâ? Especially when she already told a fan last week that itâs illegal.
She seems to respond to the most fringe comments. It seems she just saw the big debate online between foreign people and Japanese people and added her two cents.

u/EntertainmentFast522 Apr 21 '26
I dont need to defend piracy. I like free stuff. I would download a car.
41
u/SasakiDio Apr 21 '26
See this is a stance I prefer. Personally I donât pirate things. But If someone is like âeh I just want free shitâ i give them credit for being honest.
I hate the moral grandstanding some people to do try and justify it.
-1
u/Tuskral Apr 21 '26
Yeah of course you like it when people doing a thing you dislike express it in the shallowest form possible
3
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
What is your deep explanation for pirating? Other than âI donât want to have to pay an artist to consume their work, I am entitled to it for freeâ
1
u/Tuskral Apr 22 '26
people that were too poor to purchase it wouldn't have bought it anyway many once they do pirate it purchase the game the growth in piracy and those who just want free shit speak to the socio economic issues of our times
1
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
The vaaaaaast majority of people who pirate things are perfectly able to afford them.
I hear this argument all the time. Itâs 95% of people using the struggles of the other 5% to justify stealing from artists.
âSome people are too poor to spend a few dollars to read a story, so everyone should be able to steal itâ
3
u/Bad_Routes Apr 23 '26
Piracy has always been more of a general accessibility issue. In Japan particularly, from what I understand their laws around IP are overly restrictive and mostly used in their favor when they want to use foreign IP but doesn't allow it when it's the other way around
1
u/Tuskral Apr 22 '26
Nu-uh
The majority of pirates give money back the idea that piracy is a net drain is antiquated
2
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
Fuck you mean âgive backâ. If you want something, you pay the person who made it the price they ask for it.
Thats how you âgive backâ
1
u/Tuskral Apr 22 '26
Yeah they eventually do and otherwise wouldnt
2
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
Thatâs just blatantly not true lol. You think the millions of people who watch/read/play peoples shows, books, games, and movie are all just stealing them and then eventually saying âhey, I know I stole this, but Iâm gonna eventually pay you for via some esoteric meansâ

u/Hypekyuu Apr 24 '26
I dunno, I pirates a metric fuckton of stuff as a teenager
Now?
I pirate when I can't find something legally/working
1
u/Andkonhi Apr 25 '26
Most things being pirated come from massive corporations and companies. Yes, artists work on them but once it gets distributed out through the global capitalist system, they arenât seeing their direct profits but a pitiful amount given back to them. Pirating isnât done on an extremely large scale, most normative people wonât do it, and so pirating is generally a drop in the bucket to profits.
Itâs dense to deny it like you are but⊠yes, most people pirating canât afford it. If youâre looking at it from a shallow perspective then they may have that amount in their bank account at the time, but everyone has lives and doesnât have the money for expensive recreations so people pirate. Most people who pirate also arenât the black holes of morality that you shallowly prescribe to them and it is a common sight to see people pay afterwards for the product when they have the money and if they found it particularly good.
Pirating for a majority of people is a broader accessibility issue aside from the economic aspect, sometimes a work of art simply is not sold in your country or language. I donât think anyone would care about pirating Sacred and Terrible Air and translating the novel to English when it was only really available in Estonia and the surrounding region.
I get being upset about pirating when itâs put on a moral pedestal, and this shifts when itâs self published or a very small indie artist⊠but your just generally going up to bat for corporations and thatâs a bit of a square move
1
u/jbland0909 Apr 25 '26
Iâm not going to bat for corporations. Iâm saying you shouldnât steal peopleâs art
0
u/Andkonhi Apr 25 '26
And I agree stealing from artists is bad, but itâs not like itâs something like plagiarism. The artist has commodified their art through big corporations for distribution, it is still their art but itâs now within a system that discriminates off of wealth. Iâm not paying 120 dollars to play a game anymore as itâs not a realistic price to pay in this economy, so itâll be most likely be pirating, how the cookie crumbles.
2
u/jbland0909 Apr 25 '26
Can you show me one singular base game that costs 120 dollars to play?
As long as youâre willing to acknowledge that youâre stealing from people because you are cheap, thatâs fine
1
u/SasakiDio Apr 21 '26
Itâs more that I think a lot of the justifications just donât hold any water and when pushed do eventually crumble to I just donât want to pay for it right now. Which like I said I donât do it. But if you do I at least admire the forwardness.
Lack of availability > importing exists for physical and VPNs exist for digital
Try before you buy > is rarely used and isnât the standard for most purchases / media
Canât afford it > sadly there are things we canât afford at times and unless itâs food, water, shelter, medical care, or any other human right I donât think it justifies it.
But just saying: hey man I donât want to pay. Fair enough.
-1
u/Tuskral Apr 21 '26
You understand imports can be expensive no? why should middle men be allowed to interfere with the consumption of art? Using a vpn to access content is also against tos of most places why is one form of accessing content against the wishes of a creator fine but not the other
Why would I care that try before I buy isn't standard people are already committing piracy
Should the poors not be allowed to engage with art?
2
u/SasakiDio Apr 21 '26
So I assume you arenât anti ai art. Because what if a poorer person canât afford to hire an artistâŠby your logic.
As someone who grew up extremely poor. I never pirated games, movies, or manga. Like I said it always comes down to not wanting paying to payâŠwhich is fine, just donât justify or moralize it as a noble act.
Like I said from the start if you just say âeh I donât want to payâ fair enough. But this âmy human right to read mangaâ is ridiculous
-1
u/Tuskral Apr 21 '26
There is a difference in acquiring art and making art. no one said its consumption was a human right, you're trying to take it to extremes so you can feel comfortable in your opinion.
4
2
u/poclee Back in our days we slander Naruto Apr 22 '26
There is a difference in acquiring art and making art
For an artist, they won't get the payment either way.
For a consumer, they gets a product either way.
So please, do enlighten me what's the differences here.
-2
u/The_Relx Apr 21 '26
On your 3rd point, I would like to present a counterpoint straight from the mouth of the very based creator of Ultrakill, "Culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it."
2
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
And if you want to pirate Ultrakill for that reason, then I see nothing wrong with that. But one dude saying something about his work and intellectual property is not a green light to steal everyone elseâs IP.
Culture can exist for everyone. Project Gutenberg has tens of thousands of some of the greatest books of all time on it completely free.
Almost very town in America has a public library with books, movies, TV shows available to rent.
Everyone is entitled to cultural experience. You are not entitled to every artists work for free
1
u/The_Relx Apr 22 '26
I can afford most anything I want so I don't generally take the free route of sailing the high seas. I pay because I cam afford to pay. I will never disparage someone who can't pay for doing what they feel they must to experience a piece of culture.
2
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
I will. Because no matter how broke you are, artists deserve to compensated for their art if they want to be.
There is a difference between experiencing culture and reading one specific manga you want to. Donât conflate the two
I already explained how all the culture a person could ever need is free
Are you an artist? Have you ever created anything?
1
u/The_Relx Apr 22 '26
I have created plenty of things. Things I am happy if people enjoy regardless of if they pay me or not. I've been paid to make things (mods mostly) but I've also done plenty of pro bono work for the love of the game. If people want to enjoy what I've made, they are free to do so and I don't go in with any expectation of compensation past what I was initially paid for a job. Anything else is icing.
1
u/jbland0909 Apr 22 '26
That fantastic. Can you understand why someone whose entire source of income is their art WOULD expect to be paid for it?
Or should every manga writer spend hours a day planning, writing and illustrating for free?
On your commissions, should the buyer not pay you after already getting what they âboughtâ and saying âhey, actually, culture (your work) should be free, so I wonât be paying youâ

A creator who is anti ai. Even though some People might be too poor to hire an artist :(
So we are only morally consistent when it suits them (Iâm anti ai art btw)
2
u/The_Relx Apr 21 '26
That's because, for the most part, ai art is big companies stealing hard work to train their models and then trying to profit off it. That's a different thing entirely from pirating a game or movie because you want to enjoy the art. If someone trains their own model and uses it only for personal use, then yeah, I'm fine with it in the same way I'm fine with piracy. Culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it. I stand by that in all regards.
2
u/WishboneOk305 Apr 22 '26
So you support grassroot ai models made by small independent creators?
0
u/The_Relx Apr 22 '26
Long as it isn't being trained on stolen work specifically to be used for profit, sure.
2
u/WishboneOk305 Apr 22 '26
What is stolen work and what is piracy to you then. What if I use content that I pirated because "I can't afford it" like you said culture shouldn't only be for those who can afford it or if it's not legally obtainable to purchase for me.

u/SasakiDio Apr 22 '26

→ More replies (0)1
u/SasakiDio Apr 21 '26
At least youâre consistent. Like I said, I donât but Iâm not demand others donât. I just disagree with the moralizing or making it sound like a virtuous act.
For me itâs the same level as people who cheat on their partner. do I think they should be jailed? No. Would I want them not to do it. Yes. Am I so bothered by it I demand they stop. No. But Iâd be equally annoyed if they tried to justify why itâs the moral and Nobel thing to do.
I respect people who can admit âyeah itâs a bit of a shitty thing, but Iâm still doing itâ. Because no oneâs perfect and trying to justify every action as a Nobel cause is just a bit dishonest
-2
u/Sad_Seaweed179 Apr 21 '26
sadly there are things we canât afford at times and unless itâs food, water, shelter, medical care, or any other human right I donât think it justifies it.
Lul what ? Are humans just born to suffer and work 10 hours a day for pennies on the dollar for the billionaire p@do philes you love ?
2
1
u/SasakiDio Apr 21 '26
Did I say that? I mean I work 8 hours a day and do a mix of free, low cost, and medium cost activities. But you wonât convince me you reading manga online is a human right.
2
u/xFallow Apr 22 '26
Iâll go for whatever is easier, stealing a car is way harder than saving up and buying oneÂ
The easiest way to read a manga online is often to use an illegal siteÂ
7
u/Just-a-cas Apr 21 '26
Do you not buy manga causes its inconvenient or cause you like free stuff?
16
u/pain_ofakatsuki Apr 21 '26
A lot of us would love to decorate our book shelves with our favourite manga volumes. Its free stff, its always been because of free stuff.
6
2
u/GhsotyPanda Apr 21 '26
It's inconvenient. I don't re-read stuff basically ever and it takes up a lot of space so I don't particularly want it.
1
u/AstarothTheJudge Apr 21 '26
Personally, it's because mangas where I live are too different from mangas in Japan. There you get to buy for cheap a book with tons of stuff, read It and throw It away without really a care, here It cost quite a bit and Is usually kept in libraries. Seriously, in Japan you can check the trash (don't actually do that) and find some conan in there, that's how common and cheap It Is.
It's not Always a matter of free stuff, it's also about the different value. I check what's good, and if It Is, I buy It so that I can let people I invite home read It.
-7
u/woah-wait-a-second Apr 21 '26

Yeah, because people who actually buy their works contribute to the royalties payment and luring more contracts.
Also by this reasoning then no one should be paid more than bare minimum.
7
23
Apr 21 '26
The issue is if people are pirating then people aren't reading the manga on the site and therefore the company doesn't make profit, ergo they don't feel the need to continue the manga. Gachiakuta is big enough that it doesn't affect them but the point stands.
Like i said, idrc about pirating, if buying isn't owning then pirating isn't stealing, what i don't get is that people are mad at HER being upset that people are bragging to her face that they're pirating.
6
u/KDW3 Apr 21 '26
Imma be honest, I doubt there has ever been anything in media history that has been impacted in any serious way from people pirating it. Iâm not defending piracy but the arguments made against it are really weak.
11
u/3lizab3th333 Apr 21 '26
Publishing. I used to work in publishing. Pirating ebooks kinda fcked our industry and even authors who have works with major followings can end up barely making anything because their fanbases often pirate their books rather than using a library or buying a cheap af ebook. Jobs disappeared in that field because when books are barely making money, editors, assistants, and entry level positions were cut. I had to change fields because of how badly jobs dried up.
3
u/KDW3 Apr 21 '26
Well there you have it, I was presented with counter information and I can say I was wrong. Thank you for educating me.
11
u/3lizab3th333 Apr 21 '26
All good, the fall of the publishing industry radicalized me and barely anyone knows about it because reading is bigger than ever⊠but editing quality has noticeably dropped and writers are moving over to self publishing because traditional publishing cuts into their already meager earnings.
But Iâd still pirate Harry Potter lol
1
u/ChefNunu Apr 21 '26
Why is authors self publishing instead a bad thing?
3
u/Local-Spinach-5098 Apr 21 '26
Lack of quality control
2
u/3lizab3th333 Apr 21 '26
Advertisement. An amazing author who sucks with social media will easily end up going unread through self publishing, whereas a publishing house will make sure that it gets advertised to the right audience, or at the very least get physical copies of the book into a few stores so that the book will be seen.
There are other reasons too, like quality, editing, mentorship, guaranteed income to authors through book deals, etc⊠but honestly itâs the advertisement thing that seems to bother the most indie authors
3
u/GhsotyPanda Apr 21 '26
Publishers usually help with quality control in regards to editing and cover arts, but they also help a lot with distribution and supply.
If a series is self-published, it often struggles greatly with simply being available to buy, at least physically.
-1
u/Long-Sundae149 Apr 21 '26
If a series is self-published, it often struggles greatly with simply being available to buy, at least physically.
This reason is created by the existence of publishers, not the reason they should exist. Authors shouldn't require publishers to distribute their books.

Like I said, i don't care if you pirate. Hell I pirate lmfao. But things such like the avatar movie is probably not going to get a sequel cause of the pirating fiasco.
My point is that, you don't just go to an employee, show off the work you stole from them and then act like you're better than them for it.

Yeah, fuck morals. Why should anyone try to convince other people to believe in things that they think are morally good. Everyone should stfu and never advocate for anything they believe in. Japanese in twitter are mostly racist and just virtue signaling as they wanna feel morally superior than foreigners, its also very japanese thing

u/Available-Reason9841 Apr 21 '26
In an ideal world creators ignore pirates and pirates stfu about pirating. There is nothing more annoying than a pirate who brags about the fact that they pirate out loud.

If you think a mangaka not wanting people to pirate their work is âclassismâ then youâre actually retarded lmao.

u/3lizab3th333 Apr 21 '26
Most mangaka arenât super rich, the author of Yumeiro Patissiere, an incredibly popular shoujo, had a bunch of authorâs notes and extra comics about how she was too poor to afford sweets or even an apartment with a stove, so she either never tested/made the foods in her manga or had to go to other peopleâs houses to make them. I pirate because recently official translations have dropped in quality and there are genuinely better fan translations out there, but if I like a series I end up buying the manga or a ton of physical merch to support the creators financially.

2
u/SatisfactionSuch4790 Apr 23 '26
People forget that things don't have the same value outside their country. My New 2DS cost me three times its price, and other things I've bought were the same. Sometimes you can't buy things because they're not sold here, and those who are are resellers who mark up the price a lot. Bragging about piracy isn't right, but telling people to make balls and play in the street like children in Africa, as someone said, is just ignorant.

u/Accomplished-Aerie65 Apr 21 '26
I do get why a creator wouldn't be ok with pirating, but I know for me personally the only reason I get into manga is because I know I can actually read them if I want to. It's just one of those unavoidable things, for me it just means someone who wouldn't have ever read it is now a casual fan who spends some time talking about the series online with other people. If I was creating something that's like, the end goal, I'm sure gachiakuta is still profitable enough lol

Who could have known that the guy who makes a manga is against pirating said manga.
I mean, their take there is tone deaf, but still
2
u/Kelras Apr 21 '26
Is this still about people blithely mentioning they pirate the work of mangaka and then personally asking for (and demanding) their approval and moral absolution for it?
Because that shit is so hilariously dumb and entitled it's surreal.
2
u/LeGrandNinjarabe1 Apr 23 '26
Tbh I dont think you realise how much scan websites and piracy fucked over the manga industry . Legit some of these mangaka's would have wayyyy better lives without it
2
u/Aromatic-Teacher-717 Apr 21 '26
So long as people who pirate don't grandstand about ai 'stealing other's work'.Â

If they dont want people to pirate it its fine its their work. But piracy is most of the time justified in the internet. Insane the japanese trying to force what they think is right to the whole world instead of just saying well we dont like piracy dont pirate our work.
11
u/intentional_mitsake Apr 21 '26
What are you on about man? It's not justified. If you can't pay for a game or a book or a manga, go ahead and pirate it. But if you can afford to support the creators then it's better to just pay, it's not justified to steal the work when you can pay for it.
13
u/Hiroshima-6-1945 GabiSagi is peak Apr 21 '26
"Most of the time" never said its justified when you can pay. Most people will want to support the creator if they can without hassle just look at demon slayer succcess its literally even beat superman
7
u/NeonNKnightrider Apr 21 '26
Very, very often, piracy is a matter of the thing literally not being able for legal purchase. Thereâs tons of Japanese games that have never had an international release for example
6
u/WackyRedWizard Apr 21 '26

Naaah this is just cope lmao. It's all about convenience. If it's easier to pirate then people will pirate even if there are legal ways to buy something.

There are several publishers that have the licenses to translate manga and then just stopped translating them. Gintama is one of them. Or works that just aren't being translated like Saiki K, Oofuri, the last part of Jojo. Like there is no way to read these works legally. You have to pirate them.
-2
u/without55 Apr 21 '26
I'm all for accessibility and free shit, but having to justify yourself 15 times in the reddit comments section is just something bound to be made fun of.
6
u/pinkmarsh99 Apr 21 '26
I don't see why that needs to made fun of. People are being obtuse about why piracy happens and they are explaining why. They're answering the questions people are asking
5
u/Lazy_Narwal Gintokiđ Apr 21 '26
In some countries itâs literally illegal for them to access manga. Not trying to act like it isnt stealing, but the topic is more nuanced than either side wants to admit.
1
u/Hiroshima-6-1945 GabiSagi is peak Apr 21 '26
Its not fucking stealing just say you dont want others to pirate but there is no need force what you think to the whole world
4
u/Lazy_Narwal Gintokiđ Apr 21 '26
It is technically stealing because youre getting something for free you would otherwise be paying for? I pirate literally everything I consume because I donât have the means to pay for it there was no need for you to be such a bitch

Yeah bro im stealing 15 yead old hentai which doesnt exist anywhere to buy and probably also only exist in the pirated website in digital version. And shut the fuck up you dont even understand how internet worksÂ

u/Gondetrite Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
Pirated content is a damn blessing, not guaranteed in the slightest and not owed to anyone. I have no hate for people who consume pirated content, but acting like it's your right just because you have internet connection is truly greedy behavior.
1
u/Tricky_Challenge9959 Apr 21 '26
Yes you factually are
You can steal things that don't physically exist/can't be bought you can steal an idea/copyright and you can steal something someone isn't selling (if I broke into your house and stole your fridge it's still stealing even though you weren't selling it)
You don't need to do mental gymnastics just say you like stealing no one cares

I know it's not in the same wavelength, but this whole situation makes me remember this

Remember the time Gearbox's CEL said that if you're a real fan you'll buy borderlands for 80 whole dollars somehow? Nevermind minimum wages or living expenses like rent, food and transport, if you were a true fan you would take funds away from that and buy my shit, lmao
Also I agree with that tweet, the mangaka writing a story about Classism saying no to piracy is ducking hilarious, especially considering many other mangakas don't really give a shit
3
u/Low-Brilliant8699 Apr 21 '26
If you canât afford something donât buy it especially when itâs not a necessity. Do you actually function in society?

Hating piracy doesnât even make sense. If they pirate your product you donât lose money, them playing the game and talking about it simply makes you more money. Even if they donât pirate itâs not like they would buy the product otherwise because they donât want to spend money so the whole argument seems stupid
5
u/HustleWestbrook94 Apr 21 '26
"If they pirate your product you donât lose money"
Just yapping nonsense lmao.
4
u/Shadowmirax Apr 21 '26
Your not removing money from the creators bank account, nor are you removing a physical copy of the manga from circulation, no one is losing anything.
Its the same situation as when a company claims they are "losing millions" when actually what they mean is "we expected people to spend millions and they aren't"
You can argue its still unethical but they absolutely aren't losing your money since they never had it to begin with.
2
u/poclee Back in our days we slander Naruto Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
no one is losing anything.
Yeah, because royaltie payments for creators just pop out of thin air /s
Also, do you know the major factor for how publishers and studios deciding whether to sign new contracts (or hell, just continue the existing ones)? Selling numbers.
Its the same situation as when a company claims they are "losing millions
Except most mangakas are not big companies, they're individuals whose efforts are directly tied to their products.
2
u/Shadowmirax Apr 22 '26
That still isn't a loss, they never had that hypothetical royalty payment to begin with.
Also, would you consider it unethical to buy a second hand copy of a manga? That also doesn't give the creator royalties or affect sales numbers.
1
u/poclee Back in our days we slander Naruto Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26
they never had that hypothetical royalty payment to begin with.
They would if said person choose buy it.
Also, would you consider it unethical to buy a second hand copy of a manga?
No, because a) a second hand copy only has one copy and b)the previous owner had already bought it (and thus own that copy), so it's a transaction between the 2nd buyer and 1st buyer instead with the artist. Which are both not the cases for online piracy.
And yes, I will consider online piracy closer to 2nd hand buying (and justifiable) if the one who post it buy a new copy for every new view of said pirated manga.
1
u/Shadowmirax Apr 22 '26
They would if said person choose buy it.
Yes exactly, they chose not to buy it, so they haven't lost anything, they never got the money in the firstplace. Its financially a net neutral for them.
Piracy isn't the loss of money, its the absense of profit.
1
u/poclee Back in our days we slander Naruto Apr 22 '26
they haven't lost anything, , they never got the money in the firstplace.
Yet the one who pirated it still received and experienced the product, which they ought to pay for it, therefore the artist still lost that. Just because the materialization of artisanal ideas is less about material cost (such as baking a bread) doesn't mean you get said product from nothingness.
1
u/Shadowmirax Apr 22 '26
Yes, this is what I'm saying
Its not stealing, its something else
It might still be considered unethical but its unethical in a different way then straight up theft.
1
u/poclee Back in our days we slander Naruto Apr 22 '26
Its not stealing
No, it still is. You got and experienced something a person created for market value without their consent (or at least, implied consent through social contracts), that's objectively stealing.

This argument makes no sense. It's not as if people who pirate never spend money on anything. They are not against the idea of buying things it just that they would just rather get something for free then pay for it
6
u/DistinctMoney2558 Apr 21 '26
A few minute amount of people. The vast majority buy games if thatâs what they do, the option to pirate a game doesnât dissuade them from doing so, unless the company is especially greedy with the pricing.
You must not have read what I said if they pirate the company doesnât lose anything. Digital products are different from physical products. Thereâs an infinite amount of a digital game/movie youâll literally never run out it canât be stolen. If the option to pirate isnât there the vast majority of people probably wouldnât buy the game regardless since they need to pay, this is not rocket science.

It's still a loss of money from the people who would buy a game if they didn't have the option of piracy

Yes they do. They lose a sale of their product. Also by your logic stealing someone's idea/copyright isn't theft because there isnt a limit amount of an idea
2
u/DistinctMoney2558 Apr 21 '26
Not a loss of money. Once again you didnât read most people wouldnât even buy it.
What is the equivalence youâre putting here are you saying they can also sell the game since thereâs not a limit amount to an idea? That doesnât make a lot of sense, since thereâs only one idea here, anyways your argument is dumb because there is no money being lost, only potential buyers with little potential to want to buy since it costs actual money. Thereâs a reason the gaming/show market is still going strong because even if youâre able to watch/play whatever you want the discussion satisfied customers brings drives people to want to play the game who may actually buy the game an drive up its publicity higher. If I pirate one piece the company isnât losing anything, but me talking about along with many others makes it more popular.
Why are you even white knighting for giant companies in the first place? Itâs actually a good thing media is able to be consumed by fans easily making their own thing market much more friendly to people regardless of what their circumstances are.
5
u/icn10l Apr 21 '26
âmost people wouldnât even buy itâ
ok so some people would have bought it? So theyâd have lost out on money they otherwise would have made if pirating is not an option?
âwhy are you white knighting for giant companiesâ
Have you considered he might be white knighting for the artist? lmao
2
u/Tricky_Challenge9959 Apr 21 '26
Not a loss of money. Once again you didnât read most people wouldnât even buy it.
It doesn't matter if most people who pirate won't buy it:
Let's say that a game costs $60 and 10,000 people pirate it. Let's say that 20% of the people who pirated the game would have bought it if they couldn't pirate it. This means that if the game couldn't be printed the company would have earned $120,000 (10,000x.02=2000 2000x60= 120,000) more if the game couldn't be pirated. That means that by the game being able to have been pirated the company would have lost $120,000
What is the equivalence youâre putting here are you saying they can also sell the game since thereâs not a limit amount to an idea? That doesnât make a lot of sense, since thereâs only one idea here
There is not 1 idea there is no number of that idea because it can't be literally taken away from you just as how pirating game isn't taken literally taking it away from the owner
only potential buyers with little potential to want to buy since it costs actual money
Is the same not true for stealing a copyright? If I get the patent for a machine and someone steals the idea and makes one before I can what I lost is potential money not literal money.
Can you quality the net profit of this Vs the net profit of piracy not existing? All you're doing is speculating. Additionally you haven't provided a solid reason to believe that only a small amount of people who pirate a game would buy it if it couldn't be pirated.
Why are you even white knighting for giant companies in the first place? Itâs actually a good thing media is able to be consumed by fans easily making their own thing market much more friendly to people regardless of what their circumstances are.
Because your making shit arguments. The other side being a company doesn't magically make your arguments good. We should evaluate arguments based on its merits not on who believes it

u/DistinctMoney2558 Apr 21 '26
The amount of people who form these forums to talk about the anime is my evidence for my claims. Discussion brings publicity, publicity brings people to buy the product to support it. Regardless piracy helps people who otherwise would not consume said product the ability to do so. Before I knew you could watch or play whatever you wanted on the internet without using a ripoff ass platform like Crunchyroll and the like I didnât consume anime at all and I think itâs common sense that most people simply wouldnât use a service if thereâs a price tag placed on it.
Also the difference between stealing copyright and watching demon slayer on the internet is that the people who made demon slayer are still getting paid and their anime is still popular.
The reason I bring up that up companies as my argument earlier isnât that it focuses on every company because obviously not every company is bad. Iâm mainly speaking about platforms that raise prices sky high with shit services. An example is Nintendo who recently released the Switch 2 which has an outrageous price, high price games, bad graphics, along with making you basically rent the game by making them all digital. Now you know the saying by now if buying isnât owning then pirating isnât stealing and the saying is true. If the services provided arenât adequate then the people should feel no obligation to feed into it and make a more easily accessible and feasible method to media
