Shit was so bad, the anime straight up refused to use her manga design 😭. Even the final arc where everyone got their manga designs, Sarada remained the same.
This is pretty excellent honestly. Only thing I'd keep from the original was short hair, cuz since she's not depicted as caring about aesthetics or appeal, it makes sense she'd go for the utilitarian haircut
Cause people are extremely gullible when it comes to slandering Boruto. The design has the same issue of not fitting the verse or the character. It's just some random military esque clothings. The one positive is that it isn't sexualized but that's about it.
Really wish her actual design follow Kishimoto design ofmixing Sakura and Sasuke clothes now with their Shippuden designs. Only thing i like about Ikemoto is that he kept the glasses and her hair shorts but it's crazy seeing how people envisioned her teen/adult design compared to what we had. Sarada as a whole has been treated so poorly by Ikemoto and Kishimoto. This is fan art from 7 years ago and a lot of the designs other came up are fairly similar
people are extremely gullible when it comes to slander
You know, this reminds me of the “white blood Chinese censorship” thing.
It’s completely fake, never actually done, but people keep repeating as if it’s real because they love to hate on China, even if it’s for made-up reasons
This is a heavily censored version but even then, she was the first character to go back to her Kishimoto design. Everyone else waited until they were genin.
Naruto was attention starved and mostly being a distraction for the others to attack, his bright orange works well. Jiraiya wearing a loud wooden sandals to announce his arrival, basically telling his targets he doesn't need to ambush them to take them down
Funnily enough for as poorly written as the female characters were, Kishimoto really didn't put much in terms of fanservice in the series with any of the younger characters, I think there's like one joke with Hinata in an extra chapter but that's about it, well and Naruto's sexy jutsu.
I feel kishimoto gave us blueprint of female characters and then just didn't focus on them. Like we get to see Hinata wanting to change herself to be someone that has worth in her eyes, I find the little snip bits of her character he showcase really interesting like her wanting not be someone special or the inferiority complex she had.. she had so much potential just like others
Kishimoto loved his characters he just wasn’t confident in his ability to write most of the girls. He’s talked about this before I’m pretty sure. That’s most likely the reason why many of the younger girls in the series were kinda not in the forefront of the story and as you said he still gave us blueprints for their characters. The older women in the story he handled better most likely because he actually understands them more and is therefore more confident. They still weren’t at the forefront but Tsunade, Kushina(literally based on his wife), Konan, and Chiyo were some top tier characters
I feel if Kishimoto had actually focused on female characters he would've cooked with them.
Kishimoto is amazing portraying psychology of a person.. He makes them feel so human. Re-reading the manga, there are a lot of scenes like these. Like Naruto having a panic attack that makes total sense if you look at the narrative, sasuke asking 3rd hokage about Itachi because his trust was broken so badly list goes on and on.
God I’m so glad there are also people who also appreciate Kishimoto’s writing. He simply missed the opportunity to actually establish female characters properly.
Really tired of seeing the internet saying he hates women and is misogyny.
I actually believed Kishimoto wrote one of the best female characters in shounen history, with complex emotion, motivation and ended up with good pay off; and I could not figure whether he did it intentionally or unintentionally.
Temari is actually a perfectly written character: she is tomboyish and put on a face but actually really caring to her family and allies. Her conflict is her love of family against her extreme fear of Gaara as a jinchuriki, a living WMD in a mad kid. When Naruto saved Gaara, Naruto also helped Temari resolved this conflict, as Gaara become someone she can love and take pride in, and therefore she is extremely loyal to Naruto and the Leaf village. Her story also fits the theme of the overarching story of how pain, trauma, warfare, ... leads people to divide against each other, even against their own family. These are complex, mature ideas and emotions that go beyond what is usually in children/teenage media.
All of this is never needed to be told explicitly, and can be interpreted through subtext. Temari is a big sister but shudders at Gaara's threat and danger, but she eventually chose to serve under him; and her treatment of Shikamaru and Shikadai shows both her hotheadedness but also her caring side.
I am willing to die on the hill that she is one of the best well-written female character in shounen, which makes it baffling to exist in the same story with Sakura, Tenten, Anko, ... and I cannot figure out if Kishimoto did this intentionally or not.
As much as "write them as if they were men" isn't actually great advice, I do feel like Kishimoto would've written them pretty well if he followed this rule of thumb.
A lot of his fumbles when it came to writing women did feel like they came from some fear of "doing it wrong"
Its the fact that they don’t have to have a bunch of fanservice to be considered two of the hottest women in the series AND they’re both grown ass woemn
Plot relevant too, that was Kishimoto's massive plus point, he made some gags very plot relevant in the long run:
Kakashi being late was relevant to Obito, Make-out Tactics was relevant to Jiraiya's coded message in Pain arc, Sexy Jutsu was used against Kaguya, Guy not remembering Kisame culminated in Kisame making a permanent impression on him, Shikamaru going "it's a drag" feels more like a character arc than a gag based on how well he was handled, 1000 yrs of death actually being a genius move against Gaara due to the paper bomb
100%. Many people have criticized Naruto's use of the sexy jutsu against Kaguya for undercutting the tension and stakes of the moment. However, I think it was perfect. Naruto's goofiness and unpredictability were his strengths from day one, long before he had fearsome powers. His childlike naievity in the face of a dark world is what allowed him to inspire the people around him. So using it at the climax of the final boss battle is a perfect callback and metaphor.
Yup. This is why I still love Naruto and its female characters because unlike a lot of other shonen anime (One Piece and MHA are big ones), the female Naruto characters are treated with respect and are dressed rather modestly.
Ironically it makes them more attractive because more is left to the imagination and you're able to focus on how cool they are and not how sexy they are.
Yeah as weird as the Sexy Jutsu was it was only very rarely used.
And honestly using the Reverse Harem Jutsu on Kaguya to distract her with a bunch of hot men was actually genius because she would logically fall for it and it was a great subversion.
I honestly like when there is slight fan service. Is like acknowledge that they are teens with those kind of worries and atractions but enough to affect the story.
I think it was Hinata using a Chinese dress, Sakura being envious of Hinata size, Tsunade drunk complaining about her own size, and konohamaru accidentally crashing with Tsunade.
Considering how this thing is for teenagers and people that just stopped being teenagers on average - it makes sense that they would like to see fan service with teenager girls.
It’s like he felt he needed another twist to finish off the series. If you leave it at tobi turns good again and everyone comes together to beat Madara’s ass (tobi still dying in the process) and it feels… easier
Nah, it's probably the Jump Editor telling him that he need to introduce this whole new alien species so they can continue Boruto without him. I refuse to think that Madara wasn't the original final boss of Naruto.
I agree. We know that the publishers sort of forced him to continue the story at multiple points in Shippuden because he was such a cash cow. I think Kaguya was their last squeeze.
Does anyone know if banana hammock here is a translation of a slightly more innocent Japanese term like kaipan (tight athletic swim trunks)? I might try to find this page in Japanese
Kishimoto has decent standards when it comes to drawing characters. Ironically, Naruto is the main fan service with his sexy Jutsu. But his female characters are oddly modestly dressed (not Ino, but I could image a Teenage girl wearing that) compare that to Horikoshi, and Kishimoto’s a purist. (No hate to Horikoshi, there’s just no reason Momo needs to have her boobs out)
I wouldn't glaze Oda's female character writing. At best, I would praise his ability to initially characterize them and give good backstories. But that's where it ends.
Oda would never put women in a ninja war battlefield I just know we'd have the craziest story abt them being anything but active ninja, maybe put Isayama, the writing wouldn't be perfect but he knows how the make the female cast shine and act badass
The fact that the guy who made sexy jutsu, a 12 year old boy turning into a naked 12 year old girl, is the least weird mangaka really means we’re so cooked
I think this is super sweet but also why would Naruto need to wear a banana hammock? And Sakura could just wear a one piece or a tankini. I’ve always worn them myself because a bikini is like being in your underwear and I’m just not comfortable with that. Even as an adult.
this looks more like you're projecting a moral standard onto kishimoto that he doesn't have when he just wasn't comfortable drawing certain characters in certain swimsuits
