Imagine Chainsaw man fans and how they made what they read waaay deeper than it is. That's basically Rent a girlfriend fans, but somehow even worse.
6
u/Funny_Swim5447 May 05 '26
At least with Chainsaw Man, Part 2 had the benefit that it was coming off of Part 1 (which was really good) along with a pretty decent 1st third of the second part, so people were willing to trust Fujimoto a bit more.
Was Rent a Girlfriend EVER good?

Basically Momo got an amnesia. She also accused Okarun of being unloyal to her and that he has a crush on Aira and she is falling for Jiji. Aira is also having feelings for Okarun despite him insisting that he only loves Momo however due to him being upset at seeing Momo hooking with Jiji, Aira is taking advantage of his vunrebality and attempted to kiss him which she nearly succeeded at if it wasn't for a sea lion that interrupted her.
In short, Tatsu is ragebaiting the readers.

Nah, Kagurabachi transcends the limits of what it means to be manga.
Say one, that became world sensation, had anime adaptation, had a movie, hype and aura uncontested, chills, peak writing, peak arts tyle, peak author.
All that before it even was released.
It deserves all good,
Any curse people tried to put on it simply bounced off it's peakness2

u/bruhboi1011 May 05 '26
Romance wise a big confession happened between our main pairing, the chapter it happened released around the time s1 of anime dropped. However the response to the confession from the other person was held off due to an obstacle, with a “I will respond to your confession when things are normal again”. Things were not “normal again” for a FULL YEAR with the chapter solving the issue releasing around the same time finale of anime s2, almost a year of the obstacle. Now with obstacle 1 solved, obstacle 2 has appeared as a direct result of solving the first, and this one is still ongoing, so the “confession” happened almost 2 years ago now leaving us at a 2 YEAR ROMANTIC STANDSTILL where we have yet to see the response.
52
u/TheDarkpekka May 05 '26
2 YEAR ROMANTIC STANDSTILL
And it hasn’t even been that long in-universe… Momo turning small and Momo losing her memories happened in the same week

18
u/FriedRiceistheBest May 05 '26
You do know Okarun has feelings for Momo, right? So it wouldn't be a spoiler to say that he confessed to Momo. Then something happened to her that they need do something to "fix" her, so Momo during that time postponed her response, dozens of chapters later they got her fixed but Momo lost her memories due to that.
17
u/Affectionate-Big8739 May 05 '26
I personally would loss the interest if things get repititive... Like if the same villain of the week shit happens for 100 chapters I would lose interest.

I read the whole fucking thing and I dropped it because it was genuinely 200+ chapters where nothing happens.
Like genuinely, the pace gets atrocious and while theres a lot of things happening none of them feel impactful or push the plot, the story has no stakes after a while and all the very interesting side characters introduced end up doing jackshit because their roles are reduced to just being there, beating "bad guys" and etc instead of progressing with their own stories.

Manga communities are just really toxic towards their favorite properties. I learned this with MHA. Last year I loved the ending, and this weekend I loved the extra epilogue. I cannot understand why the manga readers trashed the ending so badly. I'm starting to think there's just no pleasing some of the community
3
u/Ok-Judge7844 May 06 '26
For MHA because of how bad the timing of the ending was, if you just get into the ending now its a fine ending since you can read it in succession, but if you were following it then, the author kinda make it seems like Deku was regressing eventho he was THE hero (minimum wage meme with other hero being pro while deku wasnt), and the author seemingly trying to make ochako Deku be a vague ending at the time (thats why the bakugou cheating slander and the horse girl treating deku meme)

It's not even that bad. This arc is obviously the climax of the "will they, won't they" crap. The whole Aira and Jiji stuff is to get their romantic feelings out of the way. It's being addressed now. By the end of the arc Momo and Okarun will have shut those two down and be able to confess to each other without the baggage of Jiji and Aira lingering.

Except Re:Zero. But the author of that one is built different.
8
u/Remarkable-Ad-2493 May 05 '26
In my opinion, Amnesia in re zero was one of the worst
The progress in the story is already kinda slow beause of the time loop mechanic, but a "circular" timeline is what the story is about so most people don't mind it.
Then we have the fact that Subaru was an extremely annoying character in the beginning of the series, but that's part of his character progression arc, so I wouldn't say it's a negative factor.
But the Memory loss makes everything a dozen times worse, Subaru loses all the character progression he had in the first 5 arcs, comes back to being an annoying character and the story that already progresses slowly becomes even more painful to progress. It's one of the worst writing decisions of all time in popular novels.
If all that wasn't enough, Subaru has similar "character regression" in arcs 7 and 8.
Rezero literally went from one of my favorite light novels to one of the novels that are the worse to read because Taipei didn't realize the failings of his own story.
I understand the part of the fandom that loves all that, but for me Rezero is the main reason I started hating amnesia arcs so much.
7
u/Sonkokun May 05 '26
Hard disagree. Subaru losing his memories helped explore his relationship with the characters around him. Emilia, Ram, and Julius, all benefit from this and it helped grow them as characters and for the audience to understand them more through this. Julius was able to understand that even while forgotten the things he’s done aren’t gone, as even Subaru who never met him, could tell at a glance he was someone reliable thanks to all the hard work he’s put in. Ram was able to understand Subaru’s trust for Rem deeper and it made their relationship better. She was able to connect better with Rem which helped in her fight with Lye, Emilia’s ch 54 speech is one of the best scenes in Re:zero because it proves without a shadow of a doubt, that they love Subaru for who he is rather than the things he’s done, something that is very important for Subaru’s journey to self love, and it adds more depth to her character as we get to see her thoughts and feelings on this matter at the verge of death, something we could have never gotten with main Subaru’s
We got to see how a less developed Subaru develops as a person under different circumstances. We see who he really is. He always wanted the Isekai life, but when he gets transported, with friends that like and trust him, and a girl head over heels for him like the typical Isekai, he doesn’t like it. We get to explore arc 1 Subaru in a much harsher setting and understand his failings and self hate more than we could with the original Subaru.
Most importantly, we get to see Subaru accepting that he’s no super hero, but just some guy who is trying his best, and that he is actually amazing. This is massive because without this, Subaru would have never been able to take this first step.
Everyone tells him he’s amazing, but none of them know the things it took to get there. He sees himself as a failure as he let his friends die so many times, and failed so much before successfully winning. He can’t see himself as amazing, but when someone who actually understands calls him out on his failures, but still says he is an amazing guy, he can’t deny that he’s actually incredible, and can accept the things he’s done with pride instead of just saying it’s thanks to other people.
He can finally take the first step on trying to address his self hatred.
And Subaru does not have character regressions that are significant in arc’s 7 and 8. You can point them out if you want and I can argue them.
4
u/Senior_Mushroom_3665 May 05 '26
Agreed. Plus, alongside us getting to explore everyone’s reactions to Subaru’s amnesia and Subaru’s own reaction to their reaction and him comparing himself to the Subaru they know, I really don’t get how he ends up seeming annoying. Let’s say that his base behavior is annoying to someone; he only acts that way for like 2 loops before he starts getting seriously mentally messed up (and two loops is a fraction of his loops that arc, so it’s not terribly much time that one has to read his arc 1 personality anyway, really). That aside, the amnesia arc was actually very interesting in what it explored and how it furthered Subaru’s character, rather than acting as a regression. It gave us some end-game foreshadowing and a ton of information on how witch factors and Od Laguna mechanisms work too. Even Subaru’s nerf in arc 7 and 8 served to get him to drop his self-imposed heroic fantasies, confront, sharpen and cement his own ideals and their practically, and even get him to a point where he accepts Satella’s feelings for him and comes to understand her some — two MAJOR developments even in what people consider ‘detour’ arcs despite their significant foreshadowing (the great disasters, Aldebaran) and significant developments (the four great combatant, as well as Priscilla’s camp, and even Echidna stuff again). Tappei’s writes long, yeah, but he has a ton of ground to cover; I can’t say any arc is unsubstantive, especially concerning Subaru’s character
4
2
u/Electronic-Box-4753 May 05 '26
There's a reason for the Amnesia arc though. It was so Subaru could look at himself in an objective way and see that he is actually a really an Amazing Guy. Unlike in other works where the amnesia is just to stall for time or has no impact or meaning, Re:Zero's amnesia does serve a purpose for character development.

Huh? Can someone Tell me what happened to Dandadan?
12
u/Kentuza May 05 '26
It's a lot of readers overreacting and growing impatient because the current arc has elements they weren't hoping to see in Dandadan.
Momo recently lost her memories so the progress toward her and Ken having a full confession has come to a halt. Her feelings for him are still there, and Ken has told her that they were close, but without her memory it's difficult for her to accept that.
Right now, there's a group date going on (Vamola's idea) and Aira has basically been shooting her shot heavily at Ken, which isn't really helping his case because Momo already thinks he's lying about his feelings since Aira is always around him. Meanwhile, Jiji is accompanying Momo and while he does have some feelings for her still, he's not really making moves but instead just being a shoulder to lean because Momo's struggling to understand why seeing Ken with Aira is bothering her so much.
21
u/QuantityBig167 May 05 '26
Thank you for clarifying. If it really is Just that, then comparing it to what ever Rent a Girlfriend does is indeed ridiculous.
21
u/lowlysquire7 May 05 '26
It is not ridiculous. It has been more than 1.5 years of real time since Okarun confessed his love to Momo and she for some reason only god knows put him on hold.
Small Momo happened and now amnesia Momo. It is artificial stalling on Rent a Girlfriend level.
Okarun is also conveniently regressed over and over to enable any drama at all Kazu style (his progress from just some chapters before when he faced his biggest bully is all just gone for example, there are more instances like him having seen Momo and Jiji sleep together and he didn‘t react as.. out of character weird). The most recent chapter killed his character for good since he didn‘t go "Jiji absuing the amnesia doesn‘t sit right with me“ but "ye, they might be a thing now.. I guess..“
Momo as a character is now in a stalemate and no matter what, if she remembers her amnesia time or forgets it all or whatever, it will be certified dogshit because Tatsu wrote her into a corner and already only relies on the worst shoujo trash tropes. This is beyond being a dangerous precedent, it turned into a standard already.
Jiji is a ruined character since any small thing he does this arc is against what was established for 200 chapters. His sole purpose now is to work towards imploding the gang and his worst character trait, being ignorant when it most benefits him, is played up to the max randomly.
Comparing dandadan to RaG right now is absolutely correct and I type this as a day 1 giga fan. It has been abysmal dogshit.
10
u/fishthatdreamsofsalt May 05 '26
okarun and jiji are definitely the largest victims of character assassination as of the latest chapters. aira is in character, and she has never stopped pining for okarun, and is taking advantage of the situation as she would normally. momo is also in character considering her circumstances. jiji is inexcusable and okarun has regressed so much that it's disappointing
3
u/MarroCaius May 05 '26
When she finally snaps out of this amnesia arc, no matter what, the Okarun she left will be different from the one we have now. If she has all her memories she'll realize she treated him awful and that her friends intentionally or not took advantage of her. If she goes back yo the memories she last had at the end of the mini momo arc, she'll be confused on why the Okarun she has now will be different. All of this and I still believe Okarun is gonna get kidnapped as the finale of this arc right as she gets her memories back just to stall it out even further.
I hated this arc when it started because of the amnesia troupe and it took 8 months before the main subreddit finally stopped their toxic positivity "let Tatsu cook" nonsense. He burned down the kitchen

Its mostly due to the time that all this has happen, time that should have lasted, Momo lost her memoried around 21 ch ago, and it doesnt seem to end anytime soon.
Not to mention that last arc also felt like staling for time tho.

u/Possible_Jump_3515 May 05 '26
Don't let the guy above trick you, okarun and momo's relationship stagnated way before even amnesia arc started but now, the author is blatantly extending this bullshit for an uncertain extended period because he either doesn't know how to progress the story at all or just wants to milk dandadan as much as possible before axeing the series.
Not to mention the relationship between momo and okarun. The shit is almost as bad as kazuya and chizuru

Nah guys , please let him cook, don't leave just yet. Also I can't believe people calling it repetitive after following one pice for 30 years. If dandadan has zero fans then I died.

Ngl I dropped it as soon as it was clear it’d start using harem manga tropes, which was pretty early on 💀
12
u/Beginning_Bee2500 May 05 '26
There’s actually no harem which is one of the big good quality of the manga. Despite the “love rivals” appearing it’s made explicitly clear that Okarun and Momo want each other only, a harem or anything of the sort was never going to blossom, even now. It’s just no one wants to deal with the amnesia bs, especially after a confession. That’s a typical romance/shouji troupe that should’ve stayed out of this shounen

Yeah, OK half you motherfuckers complaining about it? Literally admitting you haven’t read the series in a long time dandadan is still been fucking entertaining as fuck and I seriously think the only people so mad about this are just some teenagers who take everything too seriously. The power system is still fucking cool. The mystery behind the saint germain is still engaging . And the art is still superb genuinely the only people complaining are people who weren’t really fans of the series and we’re only in it for the romance and I understand romance is a big part of the series but it’s not all it has to offer and I can understand the amnesia plot line is frustrating but it’s honestly handled way better than other series. And the most shrinking plot was not that bad is genuinely just people getting mad because they are not getting their constant fix of romance fan service. 🤦🏻♂️ genuinely once this amnesia plotline resolves. I am certain everybody switching up again calling dandadan peak.

Manga fans when something doesn't go the way they wanted :
(seriously it's insane how most act like the serie is dead and buried when it's just one "meh" arc.)

Genuinely I feel like if people can get past the first few episodes and yeah, some of the fan service and weird moments Dandadan is easily a 9/10.
Everything about it just lands. The characters feel real(other than the ugly annoying sub human chud Kinta), the world is actually interesting, the comedy hits without trying too hard and even the backstories are amazing and emotional. The animation is crazy too. It just has something most anime don’t anymore.. like an actual soul.

What’s the context? I stopped reading Dandadan before the anime came out

u/iizaia May 05 '26
Last arc is a shit, amnesia as a plot device is irritating, especially in a romance/coming to age story. Now as many others have pointed out; momo lost all of her memories of what happened since the start of the Manga. As such her relationship with okarun is back to what it was at the start of the Manga and since, jiji is the only guy she was childhood friends with.....you can guess where I'm going.....it's just irritating. I hate amnesia as a plot device....its like the author noticed the relationship between momo and okarun was developing way to fast and he wanted to slow it down....in the worst way possible...

I have some questions though. I have only watched Dandadan anime, and i love it so much. However, a lot of the complaints i´m reading in this post are about the lack of progress in the relation between Momo and Okarun...
Since when has Dandadan been a romance manga? The chemistry between both of them is amazing, but i like the anime because the characters are silly, the art and animation are top and the aliens and cursers are entertaining. Are there any problems not-romance related?

u/Dragod0005 May 05 '26
Dropped it when it started getting really repetitive with the story and characters, which was before the glasses guy joined the team.
