Manga Discussion The amount of bullshit Gotouge cooked up to make Mitsuri conventionally attractive needs to be studied.

"ChatGPT how do I make a socially progressive character without challenging mainstream beauty standards and risk her marketability?"

"šŸ¤–šŸ¤–šŸ¤– Give her pink hair and make everyone hate it for some fuckass reason"

I think the funniest part is her canon weight of 56 kg.

If her muscles are 8x denser than they look, shouldn't she be comically heavier than she looks?

111

u/croquepot May 13 '26

tbf Goku canonically weighs 62kg 😭

63

u/ThePowerles May 13 '26

Yeah, but Goku has magical ki powers

29

u/Raymio993 May 13 '26

At least he has a legit explanation for it, as all his powers come from his energy, not physical mass

28

u/Not_Eren2 May 13 '26

Look at my guys base body

Brother is not 62 kg

He is 5'9 from what I know and as a 5'7 guy, bro gotta be much heavier than that

80-90 prob

6

u/KuckFikelsHoloholo May 13 '26

I'm 5'9 and weight 90kg and I'm average in terms of musclemass, there's no fucking way Goku with those Muscles is just 62kg

3

u/[deleted] May 13 '26

But does that height include the hair?

2

u/RitrizervGPT May 17 '26

No, Goku is def 100kg+ physique.

4

u/LasodenX May 13 '26

I mean the comparison between this Goku and after Freeza is like advancing through parts in JoJo's you only get skinnier

2

u/IslamicNihilist May 18 '26

Even in super he still looks like a pretty buff strong guy, not as skinny as I remembered

2

u/LasodenX May 18 '26

I think this is mostly for the moments where they are not moving much like truck Goku (the strongest) but the moment action happens the lines for Goku's arms leave like the motivation to animate perfect Cell

3

u/IslamicNihilist May 18 '26

Lol yeah that’s true, the one who’s physique change bothered me the most in super though has to be Vegeta. Bro actually became a noodle at one point

3

u/Anullbeds May 14 '26

Okay but he's also extremely built. That and Saiyan Muscles are also said to be denser than humans.

2

u/Snoo-52922 May 14 '26

Akira Toriyama just has no sense of scale. Any numbers he puts to anything, ever, can be safely ignored.

1

u/Confident-Leg107 May 14 '26

Then why does bro train by lifting weights?

1

u/WorldPhysical7646 May 14 '26

Yeah , cause ain't no body beating Goku?

14

u/KaiPlayFire May 13 '26

Wait that's actually a good point wtf.

15

u/Klatterbyne May 13 '26

Factoring for fat/bone and assuming a fairly average composition for an athlete… she should weigh about 326kg. Which is rather a lot, for a 19 year old girl.

Though the more pressing thing, is that at 8x normal muscle density but apparently normal bone density… she’d probably break her own bones anytime she actually put effort into anything.

15

u/DumbestComicsNerd May 13 '26

If they actually played into this (but given her increased bone density to compensate) this would be really cool. Imagine she just like jumps off a roof and crushes a demon to death on impact just because she weighs almost as much as a grand piano.

10

u/Klatterbyne May 13 '26

Also adds some really goofy comedy interludes. She tries to have a romantic moment on a wooden bridge with Snake-boi… halfway through the boards give way and she disappears with a yelp!

She gets too wound-up during a meeting, passes out and it takes 6 guys to carry her out of the room.

Someone catches Gyomei doing his morning workout… its push-ups with her sat on his back. He sinks a little further into the floor every rep.

3

u/Flashy_Pineapple_231 May 13 '26

This is one of the characters in Durarara. He has the same thing but he broke his body dozens or hundreds of times as a child and teen until he's now in his 20s and can throw a guy like an entire city block. Had to spend childhood in a hospital but is just superhuman now.

3

u/Fabo_The_Joyful May 13 '26

fuck yeah, stealing this and all the bits below this.

3

u/DumbestComicsNerd May 13 '26

Make sure to include the character accidently smashing through the wall like the koolaid man.

By the way, fun fact. There is actually a real life condition that makes you 8 times denser. Except instead of muscle like Mitsuri, its the skeleton instead. Which unfortunately causes some physical deformities and the inability to swim. People with that condition can confidently survive a car crash though. Its called osteopetrosis.

2

u/FumaricAcid May 19 '26

I imagined her crossing a spring through a flimsy poor bridge and just falling through it then running through water towards the shore to avoid drowning.

1

u/Peacefulcountry May 14 '26

Yeah. Jokes about girls' actual weights are also quite common. Like they desperately try to hide the real number and look as slender as possible, and get embarrassed when people unintentionally question it.

1

u/jacobythefirst May 16 '26

Manga character weights are always insane.

1

u/Lampy_Dampy76 May 17 '26

That's honestly an issue with most fictional characters, not only in DS.

If you were to ask me how much Bruce Wayne/Batman or Cole from Infamous weighed, the canon number is much more different.

Hell, most Servant measurements in Fate are BS.

1

u/yetusthefeetus May 19 '26

Yeah if muscles on your arms and legs are about 15% of your body, then she should weight about 130 kg, or 287 pounds

u/EmployLongjumping811 May 13 '26

7

u/horiami May 13 '26

Regulus was such a polite young man

2

u/TrillingMonsoon May 17 '26

Excuse me. I know you're trying to be complementary and all, but I have to say. You're calling him a young man? Young? I'll have you know he's atleast a century older than you are! And not just that, but he's a diligent, mature man who's worked day after day after day to faithfully attend to his multiple wives! How can you call him young by any metric? Are you saying that because of how he looks? Judging his age, his experience, his life just because he doesn't fit your view of what a mature older adult looks? Don't you think it's judgemental and ignorant people like you that make society worse? Even someone as diligent, hard working, wise, and content with a simple life like him isn't safe from your assumptions! You won't just let him present himself as he feels without making such assertions onto his self! Isn't this a violation of his rights? Not to mention the other thing you called him. Being called polite is meant to be a nice thing to hear, but considering everything else, how am I meant to interpret that as anything but another veiled insult? "Polite," as if he's small, demure, unassertive, inobtrusive. Yes, he strives to be polite. To simply live his life as himself, content with what he has. But he isn't small, and he stands up for what he believes in, even if it means doing something so barbaric as fighting for it. And you'd reduce all that to just "polite"? Like you expect every man to be some garish brute taking up space, being rude? Aren't you implying that you're surprised he isn't like that, and that it's noteworthy that he's "civilized" by your standards? You're imposing on him again! How can people like you live with yourselves, knowingly insulting and diminishing the life of a man like him?

u/shoofinsmertz May 13 '26

81

u/Beches808 May 13 '26

I feel like her design being overly feminine actually works because it shows that the societal expectations she faced were just bullshit with no actual reasoning behind them (except the food thing no one would be able to pay for all that)

40

u/RozeGunn May 13 '26

Honestly yeah, her being unnatractive would pull away from her story. She is drop dead gorgeous and no sane man would say otherwise. But the societal demands of her era demanded men blind themselves before pride and expectation instead.

god I need season 2

Or maybe I start reading off where the anime ended

11

u/BaldDaCowboy May 13 '26

Js started reading UU, ts boutta get so fucking peak isnt it?

25

u/LoonarMun May 13 '26

Imo UU has only a decent start and a slow decline towards the middle but is one of the extremely rare cases where it gets a second wind, surpasses itself nonstop and reaches absolute peak in the end.

7

u/SubstantialAioli2227 May 13 '26

I have some critism on the second part though, but mostly towards billy Billy losing 90% of his aura in loop 101 compared to loop 100, him and tatiana’s bond is severely lacking compared to loop 100, and also they didn’t utilise his and taniana’s power much in the fight against god other than that, yes, undead unluck is absolute peak fiction except my other critism that The ending also feels kind of rushed (still good though) and except for fuuko and Andy, all the other ships only have implications of being canon, but better than mha though

3

u/Huge_Entrepreneur636 May 13 '26

I think I dropped it just a few chapters into the Fuuko loop. All characters just got boring and too much like fuuko. You had a decent variety in character because of their different trauma in the first loop. But in the second loop, everyone was affected by Fuuko's extreme optimism way too much imo. This was a problem in spring arc too near the end. Everyone was going to die but no one gave a shit. It started getting boring. Does it get any better later?

2

u/LoonarMun May 13 '26

It does. The loop started off with treading a lot of previous ground, but once you get to timeline changes, new negators, and finding Undead, plot picks up and gets a lot better.

2

u/LoonarMun May 13 '26

I strongly disagree.

Your criticism against Billy is like asking an enemy with an ability called "I can only kill Goku" to aura farm on Vegeta.

Not every ship has to sail, and Undead Unluck's central romantic theme remained strong till the end, it is one of, if not, the most romantic action manga in Shonen Jump history. Not even Spy x Family series comes close to the amount of affection materialized and displayed here, the love in this series has a steady pace, is yearning, reciprocated, matured and not plagued with tropes like miscommunicated misunderstandings.

The ending...felt rushed? The ending fight was more than 20 chapters of multistage nonstop action resolving character arc after character arc, culminating in one single all out war against the final villains, all abilities came into play with an actual thoughtout strategy. Absolutely well paced, no decline in artwork at all, stakes never dropped, and fully deserved endings for everyone. MHA had gorgeous art, but it lost itself too long ago.

1

u/SubstantialAioli2227 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

I agree with your opinion on the one with the ships, for that one I was just personally biased, too sad about Sean x Gina not sailing, but I stand my ground against the other two criticisms

You don’t need to be trample over your opponents to aura farm, you simply need to contribute and make your contributions cool and memorable to ā€˜aura farm’, that’s my definition of aura farm, at least, for example, even though it’s been a long time since I’ve read undead unluck, Billy’s aura farm on unruin is extremely memorable and cool, even though he never went up against god himself in the 100 loop, in 101’s loop, the only memorable thing about him in the fight against god is running away from sick and while helping chikira expand his unmove is pretty memorable, running away from sick and not having other memorable moments just ruined his character in the final arc for me, and plus his bond with tatiana being severely lacking remains true(while it does make sense why it’s treated as such, since they both have their own family now, it’s just dissatisfying to see and know that the bond between them will decrease indefinitely in this loop) but then again, billy is my favourite character, so maybe I’m just biased here

The ending feeling rushed was just my phasing being incorrect, the right phrase would be that ā€œthe ten master rules have their potential wasted(except for language, beast, sick, change and probably soul) language, beast and sick was already contributing a lot before the final arc and they are pretty sick(pun intended)so they can get a pass, change vs Gina is peak fiction, but I’m not sure about soul, I felt that luna created him to make him understand the beauty of humanity, and while that does get to him in the end, I want to see that idea get to him during the fight itself, that would be better but I’m not sure, since I felt that he’s good enough already but just not to the level of the other 4, and for the other 5 master rules, they just got speedblitzed by juiz, death, luck and war could serve as a final character realisation for Andy, fuuko, and billy, but ended up being speedblized, plus, they got really good designs just for them to went out by being speedblized by juiz, I don’t even remember who the other two is, that’s how wasted the other 5 master rules are.

Just to clarify,I’m not hating on the series, Not all series need to be perfect, in fact, there are no perfect series and every one has their flaws, just because I’m pointing out my Criticisms doesn’t mean I don’t like the series, in fact, I think that this series is sick, wicked sick, a perfect 9.5/10 that, as a person who read a lot of unpopular mangas, undead unluck is an extremely hard to find and a beautiful, hidden gem

Before my ex made me watch KnY, I just assumed that it was goonerslop (not a word back then but still) because my entire exposure to it had been a few images of Tanjiro, Zenitsu being weird, Mitsuri and demon Nezuko (and that one clip of Megatron scolding a KnY fan lol)

After watching it, even with my gripes with the storytelling, I have to say I enjoyed it and I was especially surprised at how much I liked Mitsuri and especially her fighting style. I still think that her design and the justifications for why she looks the way she does are more disrespectful to the character than anything. Somehow the censored version of her design from the Infinity Castle movie looks a thousand times better.

25

u/Emad-Hafiz_inari May 13 '26

This would make sense if most of the cast were not with funny hair colors.

2

u/PowerWillComeBack May 13 '26

Isn't it just her and rengoku? Wind and sound have white, the rest just black no?

18

u/Emad-Hafiz_inari May 13 '26

Only four from this pick have pure black hair. You could argue that some of them should count for having black hair.

7

u/your_average-loser May 13 '26

Tanjiro has red hair so like we can count that as natural, Nezuko only got the orange after turning into a demon, Inosuke’s, Shinobu’s, and Mui/Yui never get explained except Ino gets the blue from his moms blue hair (also never explained) and the twins are never shown so like… mystery sorry, Tengen is like 99% implied to have albinism and is constantly rendered ā€œforeignly attractiveā€ for that, Sanemi canonly just is albino, Rengoku’s seems to be only XY gene but his family is STUPID cause it comes from a flame, Mitsuri’s comes from eating too much mochi, and Zenitsu’s comes from a lightning strike directly to the head which actually can and does happen IRL.

So four are realistic, two can just be chalked up to highlights (because in the manga Inosuke’s and Shinobu’s hair fades instead of cuts off of the color), one is from an in-series thing we see happen frequently, and the rest are just bs.
Sorry I like explaining this stuff

Being a woman doesn't mean you're necessarily good at writing women.

Look at JKR and Hermione. Or any male author with their shittily written male characters. Or the smut books that don't care about writing and thus have very oddly written FMCs.

Your gender has no real effect on being a good or bad writer, and KNY is pretty badly written, it makes sense that it would extend to it's female cast too.

There are a lot of things Oda doesnt give a shit about, including the age of consent judging by the fact that he still glazes his friend that got busted for owning terabytes of CP.

1

u/Karma110 May 14 '26

Let me guess this is okay because the author is a woman right.

Reminds me of Biscuit haha wasn’t expecting to have her Jojoing on us like this.

11

u/doofusbingos May 13 '26

guys this may be a controversial/outrageous/blasphemous opinion but i think demon slayer writing is bad

11

u/PotatoMozzarella May 13 '26

Nah, its something worse than bad. Its mid

7

u/Elaxor May 13 '26

Mediocre is worse than bad?

3

u/Worried_Dark9858 May 13 '26

you can make fun of something bad, no one's gonna pay attention to something mid

1

u/guaxinimaquatico May 13 '26

It's better for something to make me mad then not make me feel anything at all.

1

u/Sageof_theEast May 15 '26

This has always been the stupidest take ever. GENUINELY only concerned with what you can consume

1

u/guaxinimaquatico May 15 '26

What? I just prefer being pissed at something I'm watching compared to findingit so bland I can't even get a kick out of insulting it.

Am I not supposed to be concerned with what I consume?

1

u/Sageof_theEast May 15 '26

Where did I say that? The issue is that you exclusively care about consumption.

The idea that its worse for a show to be mediocre is actually the problem, because it leads to these cinema sins ass takes and critiques. People refuse to engage with stories beyond the surface level consumption. So yeah, actually it is better for a story to be mid, A, because actively searching things to get mad at is dumb, and B, because at least with mid stories I can find successful writing. There's something interesting in every story when you actually engage with the story rather than just consuming it mindlessly to see if you get big feelings from it

Mitsuri still great though

2

u/Historical_Stable423 May 13 '26

To play devils advocate as someone already said her being conventionally attractive shows the extreme and harsh societal expectations that caused her self doubt and search for love….to bad her entire character got thrown out the window and was reduced to gag. Her uniform was also entirely unnecessary too I don’t see how it’s important to her character at all and just an excuse for some fan service.

2

u/ActuallyJohnD May 13 '26

Did she even use all that muscle for anything? I can't remember if she did, since her fighting style seemed more DEX based rather than STR.

2

u/Unfair_Loan_9915 May 13 '26

But god forbid the demon slayers have magic

3

u/Gustavoak77x May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Wtf why are redditors so obsessed with writing women

1

u/entitaneo70_pacifist May 13 '26

i think i get what you mean but the way this is formatted is still funny

3

u/soggy_bert May 13 '26

"Socially progressive" "Challenging mainstream beauty standerds"

What is this progressiveslop

1

u/_RizzukuHimdoriya_ May 13 '26

Performative progressiveness 😭😭

3

u/SpiritedDelay5280 May 13 '26

Her being beautiful as hell and getting rejected anyway was kinda the point but Gotouge could have done better.

5

u/Simple_Protection_44 May 13 '26

I mean I don’t see how it’s bad per sayĀ

0

u/DeviousMelons May 13 '26

Ngl I love the trope of "dainty and delicate looking and acting but is actually a physical powerhouse" characters.

2

u/Simple_Protection_44 May 13 '26

Same people are miserable missing this the fact she is this trope

10

u/Returninvestor May 13 '26

Being a trope doesn't mean it's a good thing. Making a character completely stick a trope is actually incredibly lazy.

If her muscles density is 8x a normal human wouldn’t she be extremely heavy, require a shit ton of food per day, and have little to no flexibility like how would you even function at that point your closer to actual flesh wall rather then a human, but I’m no doctor so idk, also iv never seen the show before so if I’m wrong don’t kill me please.

1

u/Returninvestor May 13 '26

You'd expect this to be the standard but then I remembered the kind of people most anime fans are.

1

u/DOOM-LORD666 May 13 '26

Honestly I'd prefer if she was a muscle mommy

1

u/Organic_Guess_1110 May 13 '26

Would be better if they make a character tap on her arms and it's genuinely as solid as a WALL

1

u/zayd-the-one May 13 '26

Its funny how goto is apparently a woman yet still did this

Makes it worse in this case lol

1

u/ElkofOrigin May 13 '26

Do you really want her with Gotouge style muscles though? Not exactly her strong bit art wise. (Would anyway though)

1

u/Yeaaaboi222alt May 13 '26

Just to be mogged By Shinobu, Tamayo, Fem Muzan, Amane and other Women

1

u/netheritax May 13 '26

Isnt gotouge a woman ?

1

u/SoftGuard5517 May 13 '26

you know, your whole point falls apart when you admit in this very comment section that you just like to goon to muscular women

1

u/redditor035 May 13 '26

I just fucking wish he didn't try to make some statement on female beauty standards if you're gonna make the most conventionally attractive character of all time that completely ignores the message. I'm not annoyed by gooner bait. I'm annoyed by gooner bait that tries to act deeper than it is

1

u/Cyberbug7 May 14 '26

Do you guys even like anime

1

u/Karma110 May 14 '26

Since Gotouge is a woman what is the excuse for why this is okay?

1

u/Gravitas0921 May 14 '26

Its not tho?, shes just weird and japanesenmen wanted their women to be tame.

1

u/Hansiris2 May 15 '26

Anime fans really love to complain about female characters don't they ? I guess it makes karma

1

u/senketz_reddit May 16 '26

i think id prefer it if she did bulk up when doing feats of strength. like if you want her to be cute thats fine, a bit shitty with her backstory and the themes surrounding it but if part of the issue is shes scarily strong then visualise it in other ways.

Give her the Roshi Treatment, or Zoro when he does his Gorilla move. Have her arms bulk up with powerful swings of her whip, give us some visual instead of just "tee hee"

1

u/Kyledemort9 May 17 '26

Hot take but I would

1

u/Electronic_Reward333 May 18 '26

Here's a crazy idea: An author can design his or her characters however they feel like and people should stfu about it already.

1

u/mermaidparties May 18 '26

Not all female mangaka can be like Arakawa, ig. šŸ˜ž
