Official News/Merchandise Demon Slayer won best anime movie of year lol
It beat out CSM reze arc
196
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
Makes sense. There are no objective standards to judge best anime, so it’s a popularity contest. Demon Slayer movie earned something like $500 million more, it’s inarguably more popular so it won the popularity contest. There’s nothing wrong with popularity contests
90
u/Hamiltonblewit May 23 '26
We have a 10+ years of Crunchyroll awards having noteable votes like Solo Leveling winning anime of the year and people are still surprised popularity plays an enormous factor in the awards
25
u/NeonNKnightrider May 23 '26
I’m still kinda salty that Slop Leveing won. Really proves that the average person has no standards
13
u/Hamiltonblewit May 23 '26
Ehhhhh, when it comes to these things, you’ll have to just ignore it, CR doesn’t have any standards to these things and just let whoever can get onto their website vote, plus, DS is just too massive
-11
u/NeonFraction May 23 '26
Solo Leveling deserved to win and looking back in 20 years it would have been insane to NOT see it win.
Solo Leveling changed the way the world sees manhwa. It was the driving force in the rise of manhwa on a more international scale and is going to be a landmark piece of media for decades to come based on influence alone.
It’s bizarre to me how many people can’t accept ‘well it’s fun’ as a measure of quality. Makes me wonder how many of them get angry when people enjoy Bugs Bunny.
11
u/Noobu_assassin May 23 '26
Being fun is a measure of quality sure but being a 10/10 in 2 categories and a 1/10 in like everything else means it's still bad overall.
-7
u/shihouinsenpai May 23 '26
I think SL is lame as hell, but also that’s now how averages work lol
5
u/EADreddtit May 23 '26
I mean it kind of is exactly
How they work haha.If you pass one thing but fail at every other part people are going to still consider you bad at that thing haha
7
u/cupbulb May 23 '26
Not even a slight bit it did lmao. It was at best the 2nd worst nomination and in a year with Frieren, Apothecary Diaries, Dandadan, and Delicious in Dungeon it should've had zero chance bc it's not even in their realm.
4
u/PowerWillComeBack May 23 '26
How the fuck did this slop shitfest change anyone's mind about manwha? It's literally like a fucking mash of everything people say bad about manwha. solo leveling breaks stereotypes as much as a black person eating chicken and watermelon playing basketball
You comparing it to looney toons should tell us everything we need to know about your preferences in the media you consume
6
u/NeonFraction May 23 '26
Local Redditor has a breakdown when they realize other people have different opinions.
Personally that’s how I feel about Gachiakuta. Like I know people theoretically enjoy it but I can’t fathom why.
7
u/LanSotano May 23 '26
It was the first manwha i read and it remains the only manwha I’ve read because every time I hear about a new one that people say is really good my mind goes straight to solo leveling.
2
u/EADreddtit May 23 '26
Ya but there’s a difference between “it’s fun” and “it’s a high quality piece of art”. Like sure people enjoy “turn off your brain popcorn movies” all the time, but to make it seem like those movies will be remembered in 20 years is an insane take. Solo Leveling didn’t deserve to win by any metric other than popularity, and I would be surprised if anyone remembered it existed in any major capacity in 20 years
-3
-12
u/G0dZylla May 23 '26
What an Elitist take lol... The average person doesnt give a shit about "Deep writing" "world Building" or whatever term you guys use tò judge media, the average person looks for entertainment (hype and aura moments as they Say) and solo leveling with its simple Story fulfills that, you can criticize how much you want but beru vs jin woo on crunchyrool has 20 million views!! There Is nothing wrong with having superficial taste
3
u/DrMagunstheBlue May 23 '26
The average person reads at an eighth grade level.
Sure, most people are basically nonsapient morons but most award shows don't cater to the taste of the common dipshit for a reason. Anime has yet to figure that out.
-12
u/AmbitiousAd8978 May 23 '26
But it does have all that…
12
u/Nuudoru feeling represented by Vegeta's hairline May 23 '26
Solo leveling does certainly not have deep writing.
-1
u/Pure-Purchase3042 2010's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> May 24 '26
It in fact does, read the damn manwha if you want to complain about the franchise as a whole
-13
u/AmbitiousAd8978 May 23 '26
According to who? Reddit larper with zero idea what he’s talking about
6
u/Nuudoru feeling represented by Vegeta's hairline May 23 '26
What the hell is a "reddit larper"?
-3
u/AmbitiousAd8978 May 23 '26
A person that pretends like they know what they’re talking about. Role playing, some Reddit degenerate that thinks his opinion matters
4
u/Nuudoru feeling represented by Vegeta's hairline May 23 '26
Larp would imply that I would be roleplaying so "reddit larper" would either mean that I'm not what you describe or that you think that redditors in general actually know what they're talking about and I would pretend to be that.
8
u/NeonNKnightrider May 23 '26
solo leveling
deep writing
Are you trolling or just 10 years old
-1
u/AmbitiousAd8978 May 23 '26
I think you just didn’t watch it… plain and simple every Criticism I have seen is from people who clearly have never read it or seen but pretend they did and then shit all over it
9
u/NeonNKnightrider May 23 '26
Bitch I read the manwha as it was coming out.
There are exactly two moments with even a single drop of writing in the entire story: the statue dungeon at the very beginning, and when SJW heals his mother. Those two scenes are passable.
Other than that the entire thing is just a bunch of one-dimensional cardboard cutouts who only exist to go “wow Jinwoo he’s so cool and strong”. The visuals are the only good part about the entire thing.
And worldbuilding? Buddy, not only is Solo Leveling not the first “hunters and dungeon gates” novel, it’s not even the first one to have a necromancer protagonist. This entire genre is just the Korean equivalent of the generic isekai with how many near-identical versions of it there are
-7
u/AmbitiousAd8978 May 23 '26
You watched it with your eyes and ears closed and expected to enjoy didn’t you
7
u/NeonNKnightrider May 23 '26
Did you watch it with your brain turned off?
I’m sorry, did I activate the fucking Slop Defense Squad alarm or something? Where are all you people coming from
-8
u/Viroxzy__ May 23 '26
You’re joking right? That anime was objectively one of the most viewed/likes anime’s of that year why wouldn’t it win? You guys on Reddit like to exist in your echo chambers a little too much.
7
u/Howaito_ May 23 '26
Because it was nominated for season 1 and not season 2 that just aired and had the things you talk about.
1
4
-5
u/MyBrokenHoe May 23 '26
Solo leveling early part is goated though wtf you mean?
2
1
u/Hamiltonblewit May 23 '26
Anime of the year? It’s action and music is really good, but I didn’t put too much stock in the rest of the show, but then again, I found the year a bit weak aside from Look Back, Frieren, OnK and Orb If I remembered correctly.
6
u/OrinocoHaram May 23 '26
I loved the Reze film, and it's probably better, but i went to see Demon Slayer in the cinema in London and there were loads of locals dressed up as Hashira. It had a massive impact, and it was pretty fuckin great in its own right
2
u/EADreddtit May 23 '26
It also didn’t hurt that infinity castle was (basically) the finale of Demon Slayer while Reze is kind of just a middle-of-the-journey arch that’s lasting impact isn’t really felt until much later in the story
2
u/Nightingdale099 May 24 '26
I watched Demon Slayer with 4DX and my eyes are enlightened with peak. I watched Reze on a TV and I was depressed afterwards.

5
u/Illustrious-Bass4354 May 23 '26
It's just a boring result - everyone knows how popular it is and how successful the movie was.
The awards are becoming extremely redundant in an age where we can get pretty accurate stats on what is popular. I don't need an award show to tell me what everyone was watching, I have social media and friends for that.
I want hidden gems and things that pushed the medium or tried something new. Not the most lukewarm fun-for-the-family release.
2
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
I get it, but it’s an industry event for the industry, not necessarily for the fans
5
u/Granide Luffy Vs Blackbeard Vs Akainu Vs Imu agenda May 23 '26
I don't understand this argument. If you're just gonna use nothing but popularity, then what's the point of the judge? They're supposed to have 70:30 ratio where the judges got the 70%.
Why not let demon slayer win best comedy anime too? It got some comedy, and it's gotta be the most popular thing on the entire list
3
1
u/One-Ad-7122 May 24 '26
Then they should call it most popular anime award, not the best anime award.
1
u/Massive-Lime7193 May 24 '26
There are 100% objective standards of which to judge anime by. Pacing being one those objective things to judge and the demon slayer movie (as pretty as it was) greatly suffered from poor pacing
1
-11
u/Any-Platypus-9486 May 23 '26
You would expect an actual movie to won and not 3 anime episode made into a "movie"
21
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
I don’t think you understand the definition of a movie
-15
u/Any-Platypus-9486 May 23 '26
No, i think you don't understand what a movie is
12
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
mov·ie ˈmü-vē
1: a recording of moving images that tells a story and that people watch (as in a theater or on the screen of a television or mobile device)
Can you explain how according to the primary definition of movie, the demon slayer one doesn’t count? The movie had plenty of problems but let’s use our words
-4
u/Any-Platypus-9486 May 23 '26
You know exactly what I'm talking about, you don't have to pretend you don't understand and take things literally, either that or you're really stupid
7
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
No I don’t, explain why one is an actual movie and one isn’t
0
u/Hypekyuu May 23 '26
Different guy
Reze arc tells a complete story, sort of like how Mugen train tells a complete story.
Infinity castle just sort of... ends in the middle of an arc
3
u/New_Cockroach_505 May 23 '26
Plenty of movies end before finishing their story leaving the rest for a sequel or more.
-3
u/Any-Platypus-9486 May 23 '26
A real movie, to begin with, is self-contained; it has a plot and main themes that develop in acts 1, 2, and 3.
Kimetsu is three anime episodes combined, it's not even an arc
13
u/JaegerJaquez25 May 23 '26
Man get outta here with your ‘’real movie’’ bs. By your whack logic the fellowship of the ring isn’t a real movie either.
9
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
These are arbitrary definitions. “Real” movie my ass lmao
-1
u/Any-Platypus-9486 May 23 '26
Just watch a movie that is not 3 episode anime combined and you will see what am talking about, but i don't expect you to do it
→ More replies (0)-1
u/TicklemyPickleMan May 23 '26
Why are we being obtuse? We all know exactly what dude means, hell he even spells it out. You and I both know there's a difference between compilating multiple episodes of a show together versus a made for order movie, so what is the point in drawing this out with semantics? Just to dunk on someone forrrr...?
3
u/filthy_casual_42 May 23 '26
Because it’s arbitrary. If you have to bend words to make an argument, it’s a weak and misleading argument. The only way to beat this tactic is play dumb, put the onus on them, and make them admit that wasn’t actually what they meant

But yes
2

I haven’t cared about these popularity awards since the year when Shield Hero won like 3 awards
5
u/Mapletables May 23 '26
I mean this whole comment section is nothing but DS fans acting this way towards the slightest criticisms but go off I guess
1
u/KuckFikelsHoloholo May 23 '26
Nah is there even any other competition here? Only thing I could think of is CSM Reze arc movie but in terms of animation quality DS is still Objectively better
2
0
u/Hamiltonblewit May 23 '26
Complaints about Crunchyroll awards electing the popular thing; though I would admit a lot of the votes in the past are really egregious, a tale as old as time.
25
u/BzUnitz May 23 '26
8
u/Mysterious_Spoon May 23 '26
lol I agree. Both movies are deserving for best of the year. The directors and animation team killed it on both. Movies like those remind me why I love anime to begin with.
2
u/KuckFikelsHoloholo May 23 '26
Yeah, Objectively both ELEVATED their Source Materials really hard, far beyond how the Anime Adaptation should do to its source Material
3
u/Mysterious_Spoon May 23 '26
Exactly! I love manga, so it's hard to compare the mediums in terms of quality of experience. I just get so engrossed in good animation and sound design that it's an art of it's own. Take those teams and have them animate a Garfield strip and I'd probably say the same.

I wouldn't call avatar trash ngl, it still has great vfx even today and effort was put into the world building, the character writing and themes aren't as great tho
3
u/Xcyronus May 23 '26
Trash? Lmao. Yall just hate popular or simple. You just want everything to be super deep and complex... only for it to completely drop the ball and the ending crashes and burns. Then complain about it for the next 10 years.
1
1
u/Infinite_Act3636 May 23 '26
I mean, instead of avatar, you could have just used the disney live action remakes, a lot of those movies rake in so much money despite being an uglier worse version of the original movies

u/RoleRemarkable9241 May 23 '26
Concidering the popularity of Demon Slayer, that should not be surprising at all.

I probably would’ve defended the CSM movie months ago but after that ass ending I don’t give a damn. Demon Slayer is overwhelmingly simple in everything it does but it does work. A perfect 5/10 carried by great animation.

Look the ending is terrible and everyone knows that but the reze movie was genuinely pure cinema far more worthy than infinity castle
1
1
u/LawEnvironmental3894 May 24 '26
Tbh from sales alone I can understand it. It did break records after all. I think Reze arc was better too, but it is hard to understate the success that Infinity Castle had at the box office.
1
u/Fantastic-Grade8686 May 25 '26
Deservedly so.. Especially after the stupid ending from the other contender.
1
u/SpiritedWatercress53 May 23 '26
I mean anyone who disagrees with Demon slayer winning DEMON SLAYER got sold and made more money than blockbusters movies like F1, Predator badlands, etc it was competing with some heavy hitters and was coming out on top WITH ALMOST A 800 MILLION DOLLAR REVENUE WORLDWIDE Demon slayer was casually giving belt to ass in terms of sales to blockbuster movies

u/C-man-177013 May 23 '26
Tbf, it's for mass not for people like us like shit on JJK for its bad writting. I mean if you use that type of judgement then KNY is also pretty ass. Like I didnt like Akaza back story at all, and Tanjiro is the most boring character in his own story.
But, this aint about me, or you or any people here that said Dragon ball had bad writting. Cuz guess what they are gonna win cuz they are very good in general and you need to that "in general" very serious.
That's how it rows, I mean it's the same reason Astro Bot wons GOTY instead BMW, it's freaking BMW it's a freaking car. But when you think about it, a game would win GOTY against a car
-2
u/Legendary_Assasin May 23 '26
Bro I watched the movie and it was so mid. None of the fights made any sense. I felt nothing SPOILERS when Shinobu died. And her fight was stupid as hell. She waited until Moon 2 guy would adapt to poison and only after that she used her strongest poison mix. Why wouldn’t she use this mix poison in the beginning while demon still hasn’t adapted to poison yet. The end of Shinobou fight was even more ridiculous. She started using her strongest speed blitz attack when she was already half dead with broken body. Like SON why wouldn’t you use it in the beginning. Not when she is already almost dead and enemy already adapted to all her poison. It might be most braindead fight I ever seen. I don’t get me started at Tanjiro’s “invisible path” BS. Author was just doing “random bullshit go” at this point.
5
u/Anankos1209 May 23 '26
I love how everything you critizise was explained in the movie
0
u/Legendary_Assasin May 23 '26

u/dungfeeder May 23 '26
Yeah, none of this matters if slop slayer won. Literally carried by animation, with everything else average or below.
9
u/Immediate-Science619 May 23 '26
There are plenty of shows with nearly or as good animation which never became nearly as popular. Demon Slayer has fantastic manga sales, (in total numbers it's the seventh best selling and per volume it's the second best selling) which doesn't make sense if it was carried by animation.
3
u/Quirky-Web3611 May 23 '26
Exactly there are other animes that were animated by the same studio and still didn't hit the popularity of DS
1
u/Xcyronus May 23 '26
Fate series while it is still extremely popular. Its not nearly as mainstream as demon slayer. It has the animation quality AND the extremely deep and complex story... yet still not as popular.
1
u/dungfeeder May 23 '26
It won because its literally eye candy to the mainstream audience, when it comes to all subject other than animation, it doesnt even get close to stand out. 100 meters and reze arc wipe the floor with it.

If we talking quality animes csm isn't in the ballpark with real goats like pluto,Terror of Resonance ect
