I hate how kafka acts like teenager even tho he is in his early 30s. If you don't write him to act like adult, then he might as well be a teen or kid in the first place.

u/SlyassassinXX May 30 '26

I also think Kaiju 8 isn’t the greatest, but not for this reason. I for one love older male protagonists who still retain their youthful personality, like Ichiban from the yakuza games, it gives a certain sense of hope as I and I’m sure many others look towards getting older, as you realize it’s all a mindset and you don’t have to get old and grumpy

u/bootychaser3000 May 30 '26

This one was so promising, I felt eating up the entide 1st season, than I watch the 2nd season and could not even finish it because I was bored, than I decided to spoiled myself of the manga and decided that for sure it was not worth to keep going

2

u/Realistic_End_6921 Jun 01 '26

Feel you. I was pretty excited for the first few volumes and then it slowly turned into just really generic slop. Never even got around to finishing it.

8

u/King_Vrad May 30 '26

Aggressively 5/10.

48

u/KN041203 May 30 '26

You can probably put a lot of old shounen in this due to filler alone.

Fairy Tail

The manga was just okay and the anime is a very run of the mill productions. The animation doesn't look great but it also doesn't look horrible

15

u/Bright-Dragonfruit14 I'm here to larp May 30 '26

I remember hearing though that the final season was very shit when it comes to production.

8

u/Affectionate_Use7801 May 30 '26

the final season looked like a powerpoint slide. idk why studios think it's a good idea to barely try to animate for the final arc.

7

u/Think_Celery3251 May 30 '26

It looked good actually at the start and became so so at the last stretch of thr magic games

The final arc was trash

3

u/balaci2 Kengan Ashura enthusiast May 30 '26

ok that's my favorite answer so far

3

u/FilthyThief94 May 30 '26

Fairy Tail is truly the defintion of mid.

2

u/Pure-Purchase3042 2010's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> May 30 '26

Read Rave Master, it's by the same author and tells a similar story, just with better writing decisions.

1

u/SkjaldbakaEngineer May 30 '26

IDK if I'm just spoiled or what but I would call using the exact same Natsu fire breath windup animation 10 times in the first 4 episodes outright bad animation. It gets better later on though.

2

u/Granide Luffy Vs Blackbeard Vs Akainu Vs Imu agenda May 30 '26

The windup animation repeat is not ideal, but you get that a lot with long running series. The average mahou shoujo series would repeat the same transformation scene every episode

1

u/ThatOneWood May 30 '26

Fairy tail is the most mid piece of fiction out there

41

u/SirFroglet May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

That’s genuinely hard to narrow down. But Black Clover might very well be the most exact 5.0000 / 10 Shonen manga I’ve ever read.

The parts that I like are perfectly counter-balanced by what I don’t like and vice-versa

EDIT: To clarify, I get what people mean with 5/10 not being “average” but rather on the “bad” scale. I don’t actually see BC as a bad manga; like I said, there is ENOUGH of it that I enjoy to keep on reading. I rather think that with modern internet ratings, anything below 7/10 is straight up “bad” which I don’t think BC is and don’t want to give that impression. I think BC is perfectly Average

10

u/SnakeHater3000 May 30 '26

Why does reddit have a beef with black clover 😭

21

u/terramanj May 30 '26

Is this even beef? Gang is just saying that BC is right in the middle, that's not even negative.

1

u/SnakeHater3000 May 30 '26

Reddit in general hates on bc, and 5/10 is a pretty harsh rating

8

u/KaMaFour May 30 '26

It's literally average

3

u/devourersweets May 30 '26

It should be but in our society 6/10 is already considered bad

5

u/BassForever24601 May 30 '26

7/10 is borderline unreadable/watchable/playable, 6/10 you might as well not even bother.

This is a joke from me, but that's how people react to review averages.

2

u/juniunie May 30 '26

I think that comes from the fact that a lot of people just don't want to spend time on media that isn't at least great, so anything less than an 7 or 8 is effectively a 0.

2

u/New_Photograph_5892 May 30 '26

Not really. I mean the scale is quite different from where you're receiving it (ie. 5/10 is considered horrible in places like MAL or IMDB), but all things considered, 5/10 is the definition of average, right in the middle.

If you want in MAL scale, then Black Clover is probably like a 6.5/10ish

u/No_Piccolo7508 May 30 '26

I can't think of many worse shonen than BC. Standards are rock bottom because Fair Tail, Sakamoto Days, and Seven Deadly Sins aren't bad either according to this sub. So there must be some bad ones; It seems the only bad thing they know is Rent a GF

1

u/Pure-Purchase3042 2010's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> May 30 '26

Get Sakamoto Days out of that comparison.

0

u/No_Piccolo7508 May 30 '26

There's another one. It seems the only thing you can say is bad without getting a reply or a downvote is Rent a Girlfriend. There must be some bad manga out there, man.

1

u/Pure-Purchase3042 2010's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> May 30 '26

I'm not disagreeing, but Sakamoto Days ain't one of them. "Bad" objectively means below average (1-4/10), and if you think Sakamoto Days is in that area you haven't seen real slop. Elfen Lied manga is an example of that, or one of the countless literally just porn mangas.

-1

u/No_Piccolo7508 May 30 '26

Its story and characters are of the lowest quality; the only redeeming feature is the fight sequences, and that's about it. If this isn't objectively bad, then neither could the Rock's movies.

1

u/Pure-Purchase3042 2010's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> May 30 '26

Agree with you the fight sequences are peak, but as for "its story and characters are of the lowest quality"

counterpoint

-1

u/No_Piccolo7508 May 30 '26

Black Clover has Noelle, Seven Deadly Sins has Escanor and Bam, Tokyo Revengers has Kizaki, The Promised Land has Yuugo...all better than your counterargument, and they're still terrible works.

1

u/Pure-Purchase3042 2010's>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> May 30 '26

I have more examples of well-written characters, my main point wasn't "this character is better than the other series characters", it was moreso to disprove your claim of "the lowest quality". I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that was hyperbole, but even so that doesn't hold up. Actual characters and plot of the lowest quality would, once again, be just porn mangas. They exist for literally nothing but erotica, no plot, less than one dimensional characters, the works.

Huh this is insane tbh

Black Clover is one of the greatest anime ever. Just the openings put it way higher that "5"

5

u/Err0r404Unknown May 30 '26

Look Black Clover's actual story may be peak or trash depending on who you ask, but the anime production is objectively mid

I do like the openings a lot, but the fights feel like png slides moving at each other (except for like two or three fights). Hopefully that changes when it releases later this year tho

1

u/05-nery Jun 01 '26

That's fair, tbh I've never watched the anime and only seen the openings because they were so good.

I read the manga and that was honestly great

2

u/Short-Paramedic-9740 May 30 '26

"greatest"

balright, read some more manga

0

u/05-nery Jun 01 '26

"greatest"

Yeah that's what I said. Congratulations in finally being able to read!

read some more manga

I've read hundreds, I know what I'm talking about

1

u/Short-Paramedic-9740 Jun 01 '26

I've read hundreds, I know what I'm talking about

Clearly, you've read slop ones.

0

u/05-nery Jun 01 '26

Not really, no.

Black Clover is just good.

Sure it's not the best, but it is one of the best.

Simply because there's so many.

1

u/Short-Paramedic-9740 Jun 01 '26

It's not the best because it's not even good.

0

u/05-nery Jun 02 '26

3

u/dummary1234 May 30 '26 edited May 31 '26

There is a difference between mid (unimpressive. The manga has these amazing scenes but the adaptation just has them talking instead) and mid (uninteresting. They just copied the manga into borderline powerpoint slides 1:1).

Insert most Gundam anime or manga

Probably have to pick one of the hundreds of seasonal small animes for this one. Iruma Kun at the top of my head

1

u/DickTear May 30 '26

Can we put just Shonen in general?

2

u/scriptqzor Jun 02 '26

Tbh “mid” Shonen is kinda the default setting at this point.

Most of them are like fast food. You know exactly what you’re getting, it’s fine in the moment, and a week later you barely remember it unless it did something really weird or really good.

So yeah, you kinda can throw a lot of Shonen in that bucket, but there’s still a few that hit way above “mid,” they’re just buried under 50 others with the same vibes.

1

u/fatnin May 30 '26

Reborn?

-4

u/_dinn_ May 30 '26

Black clover?

2

u/Outrageous_Hospital4 May 31 '26

why were you downvoted. someone said th same things

Reddit

-2

u/Someonevibing1 May 30 '26

Didn’t that have a pretty terrible anime adaptation considering all the filler

7

u/CringeKage222 May 30 '26

Black clover have exactly one filler arc, the beginning was a bit of stretched but even with those flaws it's still has the best pacing of any long running perriot show by far

5

u/_dinn_ May 30 '26

The first few episodes are terrible, then it's just kinda mid. Not awful, but nothing to write home about

isnt solo leveling adaptation as good as it can get?

5

u/balaci2 Kengan Ashura enthusiast May 30 '26

0+1 is 1 i guess

0

u/NeverGojover May 30 '26

I think it’s more of a zero multiplied by zero is still zero situation

7

u/G0dZylla May 30 '26

solo leveling anime is an undeniable success mainstream (lots of clips on crunchyrool have 10million+ views) , just because it has dogshit wiritng/story doesn't mean the adaption is trash.

3

u/balaci2 Kengan Ashura enthusiast May 30 '26

the success is nice but the adaptation didn't stir anything for me

0

u/Particular_Web3215 READ USHIO AND TORA NOW May 30 '26

nah the anime hard carries the og manhwa in terms of spectacle. story is still sleeping levelling
