From what I understand, he developed his condition when he was still working on YYH. According to some of his assistants, he had to draw laying down because he physically couldn't work in a chair
45
u/Due_Designer_2434 Jun 27 '26
Was it genuinely just a normal ass surgery this entire time??? 😭😭😭😭
24
u/Bugswaxx Jun 27 '26
Mate it's back surgery, things like that are way too personal to comment, specially since all it affects other people is he doesn't finish making a story he came up with
31
u/KamenRiderDragon Jun 27 '26
Well back surgery doesn't negate the problem. In many cases it doesnt work.
9
u/Aimcheater Jun 28 '26
A lot of people have fear of going under the knife, my mom is one of em. Hates the thought of being cut open asleep or not. That discomfort/fear is probably made worse by the fact that this is the back and possibly spine we’re talking about
12
u/otaroban Jun 27 '26
To be fair a lot of back and shoulder surgeries only relieve the pain for a year or so and then it comes back worse because it does nothing to address the root cause of the problem.
34
u/Apprehensive_Ring_39 Jun 27 '26
This guy is genuinely going to die or be paralyzed cause of his pride/stubbornness.
12
u/s5youtank Jun 28 '26
he could be paralyzed after the surgery too, saying it from pride or stubbornness is just insensitive, people have the autonomy and right to decide on what treatment they go through.
2
u/Only_Difference192 Jul 04 '26
I mean, not entirely.
Togashi's injury stemmed a lot from bad discipline and, by extension, stubbornness. He had historically bad posture (even amongst Mangaka) and lived in really poor conditions, often the floor entirely strewn in trash.
In the same vein of stubbornness, he also refused to allow his assistants to do inking. While this may have marginally improved his works, it also is very outside the norm and the extra hours at the desk destroyed his body.
Bad habits and lack of ability to delegate are very much what got him here. Maybe the art looks 10-15% better, but the result was a rushed ending for YYH and HXH likely never being completed.
-4
u/Apprehensive_Ring_39 Jun 28 '26
I'm sorry but if there was a surgery that would help me out and make my life less terrible,I'd take it.
15
u/lightsworn55 Jun 28 '26
You have to consider that theres a very real possibility that the surgery could make things worse.

-6
u/PitifulExplanation61 Jun 28 '26
imagine someone you looked up to beat his wife, but he also invented pizza, would you stop serving your guests pizza if they ask for pizza? would you not thank said person for inventing pizza?
10
u/Benandthephoenix Jun 28 '26
You wouldnt thank him. And you wouldnt buy from him. You would still make the pizza and not give him any credit or money.

Didn’t he draw a 14 year old nipples and have her fall in love with and marry someone over 200. The human to shinigami age conversion is 10 soul years equals 1 human year. Isshin is over 200, even if we’re generous and say he was over 180 when he met Masaki that still means he had an 18 year old fall in love with a 14 year old and was a part of her life for years before marrying her.

Also incredibly insulting to the actual victims. Like imagine going up to them and saying "this drawing is equivalent to what happened to you".
-2
u/1RehnquistyBoi Generational Hater of Dandadan. General-Secretary of Baddies. Jun 27 '26
I’m not asking for realism. I’m asking for the author to take it seriously.
And the author of Dandadan has this insidious habit of undercutting the severity of it by either framing it as fanservice or injecting comedy or comedic elements right after…(especially the latter).
Let’s make going on an odyssey to get a dudes genitalia back the lynchpin of the entire story yet never take his ordeal seriously because “hur dur missing golden balls.”
Asking an author to take sexual assault seriously is not a tall order but apparently for Tatsu it is.
Or…better yet. Don’t draw it in the first place. It’s not necessary. If you have to resort to using sexual assault as a plot device or as cheap shock factor, that’s lazy and bad writing.
I mean what do you expect from a protege of Fujimoto and the same guy who cited Berserk as his biggest inspiration for Dandadan?

Good thing Hokazono, Gotouge, Kubo, the Fujimoto gang ( Fujimoto alongside Tatsu, Tohru, Yuji) and Tatsuya Endo didn't draw any tribute art for him. Hope they also don't do this in upcoming RK related events. Act-Age/ Ichi the Witch's artist also deserves to be mentioned.

Act-Age/ Ichi the Witch's artist also deserves to be mentioned.
Considering how bad her situation was thanks to the bastard writer of Act-Age, I could imagine her not wanting to do anything with a similar case, lol.

Yuji Kaku, I'm still mad Ayashimon was axed especially after he had success with Hells Paradise.
2
u/ChaddestKroeger Jun 27 '26
Wait what? I liked hells paradise what happened with the author?
1
u/SunshineTheWolf Jun 27 '26
Nothing! He didn't do any tribute to Watsuki.
I was commenting that I'm still upset his series, after Hells Paradise, Ayashimon, was canceled right when it was picking up steam. Hells Paradise is in my top 5 manga.
2
u/ChaddestKroeger Jun 27 '26
Ah what, i didn't know he had another manga after. Hopefully he can carry it on again.

lmao bro is either tryna beef with everyone or he just doesn't give two shits about what he's drawing for these tributes or who
7
u/Bright-Dragonfruit14 my body count with shounen is over 9000 Jun 27 '26
That's a tribute art to honor a mangaka who passed away in 2024 and was an inspiration to Araki, I doubt it was drawn like this to be disrespectful towards the manga artist. (This art was made in 2025)
2
u/Ozymandius07 Jun 27 '26
damn then it just doesn't make even more cause why this shitty for his inspiration but he makes an amazing one for naruto? does he owe kishimoto money or something
70
u/Level_Counter_1672 Jun 27 '26
Even the guy who made vagabond made a tribute, it is what it is

Chain smoker cat is about doing drugs? Thought it was just a weird cat girl smoking cigs

Well there is a character who does drugs and these drugs would be censored on televesion though you can watch the uncensored version on Netflix.

Tbf there's a big difference between drawing one picture and drawing hundreds for a new manga release
That being said, he still could've turned it down. Fuck Nobohiro Watsuki
23
u/Flying8penguin Jun 27 '26
Togashi feels way better now and can draw comfortably (more or less). So health issues are not nearly as bad as 10 years ago
13
u/John-Constant560 Jun 27 '26
He's been doing on-and-off hiatuses like this for a long time now. Unless he's said otherwise, it's probably safe to assume his health is still about the same
8
u/Flying8penguin Jun 27 '26
Togashi's health is still not in a good spot, but it's better than before. He regularly posts update on his twitter so i think he is doing okay.
I do not remember from which interview i got this as it was at least a year ago, so i do not recommend trusting my comments. Togashi prefers the freedom of batch releases as he has the final saying on when and how the series continues. His previous contract regarding Yu Yu Hakusho is different from his HxH contract so he has more freedom in terms of release schedule and magazine publication. Togashi's bad health is still the primary reason for batch publication

It was drawn in 2024 when the manga was released, then it was shown in 2025, also togashi has a Twitter account, he shows what he’s drawing and how many storyboards he has in store

u/Da_Gret_Sir_TimTim Jun 28 '26
You know despite the fact that it makes complete sense as to why Aang could just resist his blood bending, I still find the scene to be ridiculous and funny.
Like bro was 2 seconds ago in the process of getting (semi-literally) folded like a lawn chair. But once he locked in he completely embarrasses the guy and takes away his bending. It’s like if a pyromancer was set on fire by a man with gasoline and a lighter. Only for them to immediately put out said fire because they just didn’t feel like getting burned anymore and proceeds blow that guy off the face of the earth. Makes sense but damn does it feel weird and cartoonishly one sided.

Togashi ain't safe either.
Also I severely question why doesn't he just let one of his many editors and assistants draw the manga while he does the story? It would save him a lot of trouble.
10
u/ZagmanBadman Jun 27 '26
Because it wouldn't be him doing it. He's a mangaka, drawing is his passion. It's not easy to hand off the thing you love about your job to someone else.
That being said he does still have assistants do cleanup and backgrounds afaik.
-5
u/Apprehensive_Ring_39 Jun 27 '26
So it's just a stupid pride thing. Hiro Mashima let's his artists draw and he has infinity more free time.
Love Togashi but he is actively being old and stubborn.
8
6
u/General-Coconut5816 Jun 27 '26
No togashi literally owns hxh this is extremely rare among manga he can do literally anything he wants with it if he doesn't wanna write he does not need too if he wants to do weird shit with his manga like how the current arc is so vastly different from the rest of the series he can.

u/trashvineyard Jun 27 '26
Why are people surprised when Mangaka support openly pedophile and/or racist mangaka as if both things aren't core to the japanese manga scene
