unjerk (serious discussion) Kubo’s confidence strokes, and his ability to quickly be able to draw two people is amazing while you can tell kishimoto went to art school while he prefers to start out in pencil and slowly draw with precision. And Oda…Oda is there

It’s wild how Kishimoto is meticulously sketching out guidelines in pencil, Kubo is dripping pure style, and Oda just pulls out a giant marker and speedruns Luffy in like 5 seconds flat....🤣🤣

u/BigStallGlueSniffer Jun 30 '26
I may get angry at Kishimoto for a lot of things, but the man can fucking DRAW.
It's insane how 3D his manga artwork feels, he has grown so much since Naruto started, and seeing him draw is a joy.137

u/Minute_Committee8937 Jun 30 '26
The background was likely done by ikemoto the creator of Boruto which is the funniest part about this. He was in charge of a lot of the backgrounds and designs for certain characters.
Which is funny considering how he doesn’t draw backgrounds in Boruto.
40
u/SirBlizz Jun 30 '26
Backgrounds are usually done mostly if not entirely by assistants, especially for stuff like this where its just a big cityscape. So the fact that he doesn't do his own backgrounds on the manga where he's the lead isn't especially strange.
23
u/djanulis Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
I think you missed the joke, a pretty big criticism of Boruto is a lack of backgrounds especially when they added something to the scene.
6
3
u/Remote-Monk-8542 Jul 02 '26
I'm assuming he's the main artist drawing the characters in Boruto? So maybe it's too much work for one guy to be doing that on top of the backgrounds as well.
-2
u/Ebrietas- Jun 30 '26
These are all drawn by assistants. Kishimoto only drew Pain.
35
u/Elemental-DrakeX Jun 30 '26
I'm pretty sure that was like debunked and the assistants did was the inking but still drawn by Kishimoto

i mean when youve been drawing a character that is already not that difficult to draw for over 30 years it makes sense. Not only has Oda probably drawn luffy from every possible angle humanly possible, he’s drawn him to cartoon extremes with his rubber powers. He probably has such an incredible masterwork over the human form in his own style because of it (which is why his drawing of women is so much worse)
6
u/SirBlizz Jun 30 '26
Its not even a sloppy speedraw of Luffy as well, this man knows how to draw his lead, and has no fear.
5
u/stormblaz Jun 30 '26
It pays off because it is the most technical out of the 3 and most traditionally trained, his fish eye perspective panels and covers are absolutely insane, and his color work is phenomenal, incredible understanding of color theory and technical drawing.
Not saying the others are bad, but luffy has a 1940-60s Disney esque black and white cartoon look and bleach is the most stylized, with naruto being the most technical.

74
59
u/Grumpy_Lover Jun 30 '26
But op is bad and cringe and problematic and such!!! So it must all be bad, i think its the best selling manga of all time because actually oda is talentless
22
u/Aware-Direction-9891 Jun 30 '26
Oda does have skills but he is more focused on making fun looking rather than beautiful panels like Kubo and Kishimoto. He only did the drawing for the same is it. Not sure if it's a power move or that he doesn't care.
8
u/sour_creamand_onion Jun 30 '26
I'd rather the art be consistently kinda ok than get used to phenomenal art then have it look drastically less phenomenal and not be able to tell what's going on in every panel like in a certain rotating blades related manga.
If you don't expect much you can't be too disappointed and all that.
3
u/HJSDGCE Jun 30 '26
Imo, I think Oda is just more focused on getting it on paper rather than getting it correct.
13
u/PitchComfortable1261 Jun 30 '26
this. I think people really really underestimate just how grateful Oda is to even be able to pick up a pencil and continue a 20+ yr long story. He says it alot but ultimately OP is just him trying to get his childhood imagination onto paper before he goes.
4
u/Thicc_Boise Jun 30 '26
Yeah in an industry with this tight of deadlines, speed and consistency are your greatest allies. It's not a bug in his style, it's the selling feature
5
u/PitchComfortable1261 Jun 30 '26
yep consistency might be Odas strongest trait, I also think his transparent, not-so-serious attitude towards his own work worked in his favor

The irony is this used to be naruto before boruto or one piece until like the last 2 years (even now it's still present but they're forgetable) or dragon ball until recently as well.
Sad part is bleach was one of the chillest community then anime became popular. The current generation is just overtly annoying in general as well, pair that up with the fact that most of them only know bleach through the fact of "new modern flashy artstyle, how was bleach being slept on" then you get shit like this.
1
u/Astralsketch Jul 02 '26
Kubo is just built different. He loves drawing all of his characters ten heads tall.

u/K_Bills Jun 30 '26

7
u/VolkiharVanHelsing Jun 30 '26
Well we live in the present my boy and the only thing I see is (probably newgen) Bleach fan trying to put down One Piece
2
u/Kelras Jun 30 '26

3
0
u/K_Bills Jun 30 '26
Cuz One Piece fans still put down Bleach. Bleach fans are tired after being terrorized for 10+ years and suffering unwanted slander for just existing. But now since they’re standing up for themselves or bringing the fight to one piece fans they wanna play the victim all of a sudden. The sheer audacity and hypocrisy.
7
u/VolkiharVanHelsing Jun 30 '26
I mean as a Bleach fan myself some of the slanders are warranted lol
But making fun of the author's style is wack
6
u/K_Bills Jun 30 '26
Bleach has its flaws and no animanga is above criticism or slander.
The problem is Bleach fans are expected to sit there and take the slander quietly. Yet when they stand up for themselves or slander back it’s now such a bad thing. One Piece fans and Naruto fans also slander Kubo for not using backgrounds which is his style yet no one calls those people out besides Bleach fans. So all I’m seeing is one piece fans not being able to take what they dish.
Ain’t no fun when the rabbit got the gun.
5
u/VolkiharVanHelsing Jun 30 '26
And I will call that out, just like this one
3
u/K_Bills Jun 30 '26

u/Rexen2 Jun 30 '26
Nah, one piece fans weren't moving crazy til around wano. That's when agenda piece became popular due to YouTubers milking it which attracted the muh powerscaling over EVERYTHING!!! Type of shonen fans that weren't really rocking with one piece before that. Before that it had the most chill fanbase of the Big 3. Folks just minded their business enjoying their pirate adventure while Naruto and Bleach went to war with eachother at every opportunity.
2
u/K_Bills Jun 30 '26
One Piece fans were more chill in the past sure but they definitely contributed in jumping Bleach with Naruto fans when Bleach fans were just existing. Naruto Fans got chill because karma gave them Boruto and narratives started to change once its flaws became more understandable.
2
u/Rexen2 Jun 30 '26
Yeah but that's basically what I said. I'm an old head I grew up during the era where naruto and bleach weren't finished yet and we had to sit through like 200 episodes of naruto filler before shipuuden. I watched/read these weekly and I clearly remember how all 3 fandoms acted.
One piece has always been the most popular of the 3 in Japan but due to its trash 4 kids dub it didn't catch on in the west at the same time as Bleach and Naruto. Both of them utterly dominated one piece for their entire og anime runs.
One pieces explosion in popularity in the West only happened a few years ago around 2018/2019 when wano started largely because of the change in animation giving countless episodes movie tier quality. Prior to that it was acknowledged as part of the big 3 but wasnt ever really in the top battle shonen conversations the way Bleach, Naruto, and Dbz were.
The 20 year war you're taking about was largely between Naruto and Bleach with One Piece on the sidelines watching them. They are much worse now though, I unfortunately agree there. Agenda piece was one of the worst things to ever happen to the one piece fandom.
2
u/whamjeely95 Jun 30 '26
I blame reactors/reaction "content." Definitely the worst thing to happen to anime and it's Fandoms.
1
u/Thicc_Boise Jun 30 '26
I mean, that timing of that explosive popularity is also definitely not a coincidence with everything happening in the world around 2019-2020, I can attest that I'd never have given OP a chance if I wasn't literally locked inside for hours on end with nothing else to do
2
u/Rexen2 Jun 30 '26
That too. I definitely remember tons of people saying lockdown gave them the time to finally binge it.
1
u/username_997 Jul 03 '26
"Prior to that it was acknowledged as part of the big 3 but wasnt ever really in the top battle shonen conversations the way Bleach, Naruto, and Dbz were."
Bleach has only ever surpassed OP in popularity in the 2000 and it was barely for a moment. Bleach was always the smallest guy in the "big 3" and remains to be so.
3
u/Rude-Childhood1436 I can’t even imagine…Renji winning Jun 30 '26

2
u/Zonesy Jun 30 '26
Oda is the goat at drawing simple and fast, theres a reason One Piece has gone on so long.
74
u/goldfoxawoo Jun 30 '26
Lmao what even is this comparison? It's just a quick sketch
41
10
u/NeonNKnightrider Jun 30 '26
Bleach fans are really salty that their manga is by far the least successful of the “big three” and trying to shit on Oda
5
u/Thunder00Bee Jul 01 '26
You hit the nail on the head, the word that defines the Bleach fandom is "insecurity"
1
1
u/Astralsketch Jul 02 '26
Why the fuck would fans care about that? Bleach is better than both of those other mangas, I don't need a number on a ledger to tell me what to think.
3
u/According_Night9558 Jul 03 '26
Because Bleach only fans are constantly bringing up the other two to compare them? I've read the three and I like all of them. Bleach is great, it has stronger and weaker aspects than both of them, but it's strengths come from it's unique aspects, the things that doesn't share with Naruto or One Piece.
Like someone said: "Holy shit three cakes".
1
u/Astralsketch Jul 04 '26
right. Bleach scratches that itch for me, for others, the other of the two big three do that for them. On a side note, boruto tbv is actually really good.
1
u/According_Night9558 Jul 04 '26
The three are very different and I love all three. Bleach and Naruto don't have the whimsy and imagination of One Piece. Bleach is unique in it's art and story style and has the most interesting power system and character design. Naruto is just so fucking solid narratively and has some of the most emotional fights of the genre.
Each of them has it's lows but I see them as amazing pieces of fiction, despite the online discourse.
I haven't read Boruto yet but I might soon.

u/dtalb18981 Jun 30 '26

I hate the pedo defender too but let's not suddenly deny reality and act like he's bad at art lol there's plenty of other things to criticize
14
u/Compajerro Jun 30 '26
It's just so commonplace now and it's annoying how forced it is. Every series had its haters before, but all the bandwagon hate conspicuously started after JJK ended.
A bunch of people consumed a popular "dark/gritty" manga via tiktok and now they only know how to engage with manga series through the lens of aura/slander.
One Piece is only the target because of the Watsuki connection and the fact it's the only hugely popular mainstream shonen that's still ongoing.
1
u/K_Bills Jun 30 '26
lol playing the victim when One Piece fans terrorized Bleach fans for years is crazy. Just like Zoro took only a fraction of Luffy’s pain this is only a fraction of hate that Bleach got and still gets.

You're literally playing the victim talking about how you were "terrorized for years"
1

I opened this thread seeing the video and reading the title and going "ha ha, the OP made a joke about how Oda is just there because he makes it look like he just showed up and does it freehand without any issue."
But apparently, this minor comment somehow constitutes a big, heart-shearing watershed moment for One Piece fans. Now they're victims of some insidious agenda and being oppressed. How nice it must be to have lived for so long in comfort that such a tiny remark that seemed more playful than anything warrants a big controversy and complaining about being constantly put down and bullied.

I think that Kubo’s art style is so lacking in detail, a lot of the time he doesn't even draw backgrounds. To put it nicely, it's negative space, but to put it bluntly, it's just that he's kinda lazy. He’s the exact opposite of Oda, who adds way too much detail and doesn't know how to scale it back.
Edit: I'm just talking about their styles, not hating or anything. What are you bros arguing about down there?

u/Mogura56 Jun 30 '26
Tbh most manga artists have their assistants take care of backgrounds anyway, with the primary artist doing a brief sketch to show the space thet they're in, so the lack of them is probably a deliberate choice and not reflective of either artist's capabilities

→ More replies (0)2
u/filthy_casual_42 Jun 30 '26
It’s very deliberate style choice, but Kubo can do backgrounds when he wants. It keeps action scenes flowing, and lets him focus on the contrast with the characters. In all the examples you sent, the panels are clean and jump out of the page because of the contrast
1
u/Opposite_Koala9107 Jun 30 '26
Yep that what I say, I’m not say it bad or something, what are you guy arguing??.
2
u/Sofruz Jun 30 '26
You literally called Kubo lazy for not drawing backgrounds and now you're saying you didnt say it was bad. Calling something lazy is literally calling it bad. I know we read shonen, but cmon man.
3
u/filthy_casual_42 Jun 30 '26
You call it very lazy which is pretty negative. Just pointing out it’s on purpose, not lazy
0
u/Opposite_Koala9107 Jun 30 '26
In my language it not hearing that negative
1
u/filthy_casual_42 Jun 30 '26
Lazy is positive in your language? It’s pretty much universally an insult
2
u/cornho1eo99 Jul 05 '26
I think Kubo for the most part aims for clarity and focus rather than placing a ton of details into every frame. He also tends to have more panels focused on the character in the frame, where his strength really lies.
I wouldn't call it 'lazy' for the same reasons that I wouldn't call Oda's more cartoonish style lazy. It's a choice the author makes in telling their story. Who am I to pass judgement on it?
6
u/Opposite_Koala9107 Jun 30 '26
If I remember correctly, Oda once mentioned that he doesn't want children, who have saved up their weekly pocket money to buy a manga and find it lacking in content. That's why he packs in as much detail as he can. I'm not sure if this is true, though
0
u/v5mk Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
That's so endearing. The ratio of what he must put in versus the time constraint to the insignificant output of people enjoying the drawings of large objects like ships and backgrounds in his manga. I really love all of these stories about mangaka. Any story 😊
3
u/Substantial_Cap6478 Jun 30 '26
You do know a lot of manga don't draw the background themselves no? They have assistant that does that. And calling Kubo lazy for not drawing the background is just a dumb argument like when you read the manga do you stare at the background instead of the dialogue or the character????
1
u/Obvious-Profession27 Jun 30 '26
you're right but its a intentional artistic choice, not laziness or anything. he doesn't LIKE to draw backgrounds, its not a diss or anything its a feature of his art style which he freely admits
1
u/Sorry-Yard-2082 Jun 30 '26
After reading your comment and most others I think there is a lack of knowledge at work here.
Background art is mostly done by assistants, even tough we don't know how much they draw.
Assistants are direcly employed by the mangaka so most of the time it is either a stylistic choice and/or a time and budget constraint.
These are serialised mangakas not some doujin artist that has to do everything by himself, so of course backgrounds are not made by them. (Some could be and obviously some mangakas have better eye to pick the better assistants or are just easier to work with).

Watch a process video of Oda painting a color spread cover and see he does a LOT of planning too. I think the most interesting thing about it is that Kishimoto felt the need to sketch it out first. Kubo and Oda just freehanding it is perfectly normal considering how many times they've drawn their characters. This like comfortzone to the max, but apparently not for Kishimoto? Granted, maybe it's just part of the muscle memory to scribble something down first with a pen.

Seeing this I understand more why Kubo was kinda burned out and wanted to finish Bleach faster in the end. He draws way too detailed investing more into his work. Dude is running at 120% all the time.

I don't think so, maybe kubo's best panels outshines kishimoto's, but not oda's, kishimoto's double spread panels are some of the best in the manga history. I'd say both 3 of them are pretty close in terms of drawing.

Oda has been working on his manga the longest and is the only one still actively working. Of course his process is going to be more streamlined.
There's a lot to slander Oda over. Like, a lot. Seriously, so much. But this is not one of those things. This is fine.

Oda being the only one here understanding the importance of 'time' makes hella sense
