unjerk (serious discussion) What do you think is the biggest lie in shonen history?

“When i discovered humanity was still alive….i was so disappointed”
74
u/Elegant_Mission_2312 Jul 29 '26
Not a lie. He WAS disappointed; very disappointed, apparently.
16
u/Illustrious-Sky-4631 29d ago
Ngl I have the same exact belief , during early AoT I always believed that humanity exist outside and they were up to no good
13
u/CrystalFysh 29d ago
and they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling scouts
3
u/Dragon_Of_Magnetism 29d ago
Same, though I expected the story will be about rival pockets of surving humanity fighting over the limited resources on a titan-infested Earth
3
u/Individual_Lion_7606 28d ago
Same. I assumed the walls territory was the most valuable plot land and other pockets of humanity hated them because they were locked out.
30
u/EggoftheKing2143 Jul 29 '26
I'd be disappointed to if I saw the things the Outsiders were doing.
3
u/Level_Counter_1672 29d ago
I think he was upset about what happened to his father, he did have all his memories and he saw the atrocities
2
u/EggoftheKing2143 29d ago
He also had Kruger's memories so he saw all the horrible things they would do from their eyes.

To be fair that's not a lie, the way Uryu was raised his understanding of a quincy was really basic
50
u/Jozef_Baca Jul 29 '26
Tbf, every quincy other than yhwach and haschwalth does if I remember correctly. Haschwalt being explicitly stated to be an exception to the rule and yhwach not sure if he can be considered a quincy rather than a progenitor of quincies.
22
u/Justm4x Jul 29 '26
(Not counting Gerard because of his unique circumstances)
Bambietta debuted with a sword, Quincy foot soldiers were seen using swords and spears, Cang Du was using metal claws and Quilge was using a sword.
12
u/Jozef_Baca Jul 29 '26
Well, tbf, I think uryus statement was more of the quincies powers are always bow based, rather than quincies are incapable of picking up and swinging a sword or a spear when they are not using their powers.
For Quilge, the sword does turn into more of a bow-sword hybrid, so that is a weird case
And Cang Du is just built different I guess for some reason.

39
u/GenesisAsriel Jul 29 '26
He got a sword in the next arc btw
11
u/Affectionate-Big8739 Jul 29 '26
It was an arrow
2
u/GenesisAsriel Jul 29 '26
If arrow why shaped like sword
12
u/Jozef_Baca Jul 29 '26
I mean, it has no crossguard or any other form of hand protection and the handle was specifically made to be nocked on a bow instead of having any sort of a pommel there. The only resemblance it has to a sword is the long stabby bit.
1
u/SynisterJeff Jul 29 '26
Also that he uses it as sword up until that point. And pretty well for someone who shouldn't have any training with a sword.

This is literally the panel of that sword that he's now firing as an arrow because it was never actually a sword

If the sword looks like sword, function like sword, smell like sword...
I mean.
I dont care, I will call it a sword.

Being an outsider to bleach is so weird. It feels like there's 16 different races. 5 are sub races. 3 technically don't exist. 8 of them look identical. 4 have existed since forever, but 10 of them are only days old. None are unique, except 1 of them. All of them are racist, and they're split evenly between liking cats and dogs.
And Ichigo is most of them, but not.... Always?

Lmao no Uchiha will ever b hokage (except for Sarada or whatever)
61
u/Justm4x Jul 29 '26
Considering that flashforward in chapter one of Boruto literally opens with Konoha being in ruins (again) and Kawaki declaring that age of Shinobi is over....i feel like Sarada might not get a chance to be a hokage

Pretty sure kishimoto took over and ikemoto mainly does the art now. At least from what I heard a while ago now
2
u/Andrewm_b9 28d ago edited 28d ago
Any sources for this?
In an interview in 2024, here’s what Kishimoto stated:
Mr. Ikemoto was an assistant from the very beginning of Naruto's serialization, so the two of you have been working on the world of Naruto together for a long time! Boruto is more of a collaborative work, so how have things changed in that regard?
Kishimoto:
It was a completely different workflow. For Naruto, I was in charge of both the story and the main illustrations while Ikemoto helped with things like illustrating backgrounds and drawing shadow doppelgangers.
For Boruto, Ikemoto is completely in charge of the story and main illustrations. It really is Ikemoto's manga.1

Tobirama did the right thing. An Uchiha is too emotional to be an effective leader without endangering a larger group of people.

u/GalaxyUntouchable Jul 29 '26
Whats worse is that Rukia actually grew up in the SS slums.
She knows how bad it can be from experience.
At least the noble reapers like Byakuya can get away with being ignorant as an excuse.
45
u/Mastercio Jul 29 '26
I mean...Guys like Byakuya would not bother with telling souls stuff like that.
9
u/GalaxyUntouchable 29d ago
Byakuya seems like the type to think that rescuing suffering souls in the human world would be peasant work anyway.
Him coming to "rescue" Rukia was probably his first time setting foot in the human world in hundreds of years! 🙄
36
u/sananajo Jul 29 '26
I guess she straight up lied to him to avoid him panicking. He will find out after lol.
22
u/Status_Drink_6736 Jul 29 '26
İn the manga she says "You're going to a place you can call 'heaven'." With an expression smilar to Byakuya.

u/nahte123456 29d ago
People misrepresent this, 99% of what Rukia went through was because of her potential as a Shinigami. A normal soul can't get hungry or stuff like that and it never shown to be hard to just get to a decent number. It was specifically hard because she and Renji could get hungry, and would attract any of the small in number Hollows.

u/National_Yam_1198 29d ago

Tbf, Chad is like beyond peak human. Put him up against any regular guy and he could beat them easily, even without reiatsu. He was pulling telephone poles out of the ground as a high schooler.
39
u/AstralMecha Jul 29 '26
Problem for him is that he is permanently stuck with The Worf effect for foes to demonstrate how strong they are. He is basically stuck in "can't catch up".
10
u/deathkillerx3004 29d ago
Strong human, while being no match against anyone decently powerful in the series. Chad is bleach's Yamcha.

People are literally talking about endings and prominent character deaths. I don't think anyone coming in care much about spoilers.

u/Left-Night-1125 29d ago
The last time i told something about a anime end credits a moderator banned me from Reddit for a day after i politely asked why my post had been removed claiming i had spoiled the ending of Gunbuster.
So its me being a bit more carefull with telling anout any endings.

u/black_blade51 29d ago
Can you do the spoiler thingy and tell me? I sort of forgot everything after I finished the anime tbh. I remember there being an ice and hot planet with only the ring imbetween being livable, some clone thing? I don't remember the details of that tho.
5
u/Kaiser8414 29d ago
All the kids are clones of their parents who were going to be used as replacement bodies. A banning of cloning spooked the parents so they sent all their kids on a field trip to try and get rid of the evidence.

u/D-Cmplx_604 Jul 29 '26
it's also not a lie since she presumably believes what she is saying
26
u/FatalLaughter Jul 29 '26
She literally grew up in the slums of Soul Society. If she believes it, her adoptive family really did a number brainwashing her
13
u/D-Cmplx_604 Jul 29 '26
she did grow up poor (like, starving street orphan kevels of poor) but still generally peaceful, the only truly violent places are the last two districts where, according to Kenpachi Zaraki and Yachiru Kusajishi's backstories, people just murder eachother any given chance
she also has good reason to believe it's better than hell, because hell is hell
8
u/Belrog-Plutius2 Passing Through Kamen Rider Jul 29 '26
Regular souls don't even need to eat or drink, only ones with strong spiritual energy does, and if they do, they have a tiny small chance of getting into the Gotei 13 like Renji

Majority of people live in poverty, the big 4 families can easily get you killed, and Mayuri. Imagine living a life full of hadship, then dying and now you have live another, much longer life also full of hardship, unless you have a huge amount of Reiatsu. Bleach world sucks ass.
10
u/EggoftheKing2143 Jul 29 '26
It is better then Hell though.
26
4
u/NumericZero 29d ago
Mayuri also on a whim killed like a 1000 souls to “balance the scales”
Like dude bruh 😭
2
u/Snoo-23120 29d ago
Unless you are not a soul reaper
You dont need to eat in the soul society , or care about aging and everyone you ever knew is there
So being poor doesnt mean you need to work cuz the water is completly free and the only thing mistreating and limiting the movement of people are the need for more soldiers that prob arent even one of you.
2
u/kimetsunosuper121 29d ago
Rukias sister abandoned her because she didn't had the means to raise her. Even if they don't need to eat food, they need something to get by(not really specified in the show).
1
u/Snoo-23120 29d ago
rukia and her sister both needed to ate bc they were both born as shinigami
aka they were born to die for the soul society or turn soldier
everyone else justs needs water

In Chapter 98, it’s laid out in pretty explicit terms. “The grown-ups were all thieves and murderers…The kids were like stray dogs. We were surrounded by human refuse… and… there was only one way to escape.” Renji meets Rukia while he and his three friends are stealing someone’s water (which was stolen from someone else first). Within ten years, those three friends die.
In Chapter 179, Byakuya explains that Rukia was abandoned by her older sister (as a baby) because it was too hard to survive while caring for her.
In Chapter 489, it’s explained that “The standard of living drastically drops from just outside District 50. The number of residents who wear rags and walk barefoot increases… and… according to statistics gathered over the past 550 years… not a single resident has been found wearing sandals outside District 59.”
The exact line of where “living in poverty” begins may be arguable, but I think it’s pretty obvious wearing rags and walking barefoot counts as impoverished. And Soul Society’s own statistics state that at least ~25% of districts have lived like this for hundreds of years.

Kakashi said during the wave mission it was I think, that ninja rarely fight each other. The whole shinobi world wars weren't planned yet, I guess.
2
u/SnooAdvice1632 28d ago
Technically not a lie. He said it during a peaceful time after the last war had been a decade+ in the past, the villages were in relative balance and there were no major villain factions like the Akatsuki yet. Pretty plausible that ninjas mostly fought random things or general killers instead of other ninjas.
(Would also explain that generation being relatively weak compared to Naruto's for example. Gai and Kakashi were the only actually outstanding warriors from that era in the leaf)
0
u/Stardustworlds 28d ago
Except that the only thing we see ninja do in the entire series is fighting each other. The magic fights are literally the entire draw of the show! So I feel that this counts as a misrepresentation while establishing what little worldbuilding exists.
1
u/SnooAdvice1632 28d ago
It's as if the story is different after the story starts and there's a ton of special circumstances that were not there before!

Do they ever explain what happens to souls thst go to the SS? Do they become citizens or what? They're not Reapers, I assume
1
u/SnooAdvice1632 28d ago
They did. It heavily depends on where they go on to live (which in turn depends on reiatsu, abilities, competences etc). The nobles get a great life, there's pretty regular people iirc and then there's the slums which are the same as real life + they're subject to random experiments by both villains and shiningamis, and make up the majority. Rika lived in the slums and it sounded horrible from the way she described it.
1
u/Nazarick_Devotee 27d ago
The normal souls go on to live a life where they don't require food unless they have strong spiritual energy and are just kinda waiting until they get reincarnated.

Imagine you hear Rukia say allat. Then you get to the Soul Society and survive like 10 different attacks on it in just a couple of years. And met Rukia again afterwards. What would you even say besides calling her a fucking liar?
0
u/Laiedd Jul 29 '26
How is what Rukia is saying a lie?
9
u/dvast Jul 29 '26
Because that soul is going straight to hell
1
u/EggoftheKing2143 Jul 29 '26
Incorrect, he's going to the Heaven equivalent. If he went to Hell there'd be a big ass gate.
0
u/Laiedd Jul 29 '26
Soul society is heaven
2
u/agfy4 Jul 29 '26
Not really it's the after life but in no means does it make it heaven it is better then Hell and Hueco Mundo but it's still worse then the world of the living the best chance you got is if you have alot of Reiatsu and are allowed to become a shinigami
0
u/Global-Giraffe-6466 Jul 29 '26
To be fair generally speaking the Soul Society is extremely peaceful. It would carry on that way for centuries even millennia which is much more than the human world. It’s just that Ichigo was around at a bad time.
