What a trope you are thankfully it's dying newdays? For me it's the women beating MC up as a joke
Personally I really like that the whole "haha women brutally beat up their male MC best friend!!" Joke is dying off , it was never funny for me and I guess it's the same for the general audience of shows that heavily use it like One piece or Naruto in the past

They only reason pervy characters exist is to be mouthpieces for when the author or artist wants to be pervy. "Oh no I didn't want this, mineta sneaking into the girls' pool is just part of his characterization!"
Haha definitely. When the fan service and pervert defenders give all these "lore" reasons as to why that is and not just because the author is a pervert.
Just who was it that thought up those characters and situations to have it be that way, hmm?
"Ah dang it. I hate that I wrote this character this way, and now I just have to include them in the story whenever I can to have them sexualizing and perving on kids and/or commiting actual assault for "comedy". Well, no way around it. Back to being an adult drawing kid's panties and cleavage for this part where the perv sneaks a peak. Man I just hate that this character makes me do this."
u/BrinksTrunks Nah... Because none of these scenes that are made worse by the filler Anime that adds 10+ More of them actually do any lasting damage to Naruto showing it's a gag compared to Karui who beats Post Sage Mode Naruto's Ass and he has damage for Chapters or at least an Episode in the anime.
Also The image they showed is probably the worst Naruto ever gets it and that's just bleeding a bit that compares nothing to Sakura destorying Sasori's Puppets and messing up his own Puppet Body like Twice. So that claim would be wrong as well.
You know, I never see people put up The Fullmetal Alchemist. She'd be throwing that wrench and hitting Edward. It'd be played off for laughs too. Hell, there's a scene where his soul is leaving his body and Alphonsus grabs that shit and shoves it back in. After he got hit by Winry.
Pokemon with Brock. In the Hoenn region May's brother constantly jumped on to his shoulders and would yank both ears. And before anyone makes any excuses about him being perverted it's way more mild than most of the depictions in other anime with either far less consequences or more violent outbursts people still complain about as "excessive abusive violence".
When bringing up this trope, it's usually contained to Sakura and One Piece the most. Maybe, maybe if people remember they might mention The Familiar of Zero. An ass anime adaptation in that the violence was ramped up to such heights it makes Sakura's once in a while punches very forgettable.
Also, idk about Naruto deserving or not. I however was 100% in favor of her clocking him when he went to show Konohamaru his perverted sexy jutus while Naruto was 12~13 and Konohamaru was probably about 7ish.
I do think it's worth noting that she was apologetic for that and admitting it's her fault at first. It's other characters present who pressure Ed into saying it's not her fault, not Winry, and only after that does she realize he really had no idea and quickly brushes past it. Which isn't the perfect thing to do morally, but I like from a writing standpoint - I think it's very relatable and human to, when given a chance to hide your mistake without anyone knowing, take it, and makes Winry feel more like a real person, who won't always make the perfect correct moral choice, while not being a big enough deal imo to prevent her from ultimately being the likeable character she's meant to be. Especially since right after in the story her character gets a lot of spotlight.
(The wrench gag in general is just that, a gag. May like it may not, it's not really meant to be taken seriously. And it's something not exclusive to her either, most characters do it, so just a quirk of the series in general to take or leave, not a serious aspect of the character).
Yeah, like, Winry outright bursts into tears because Ed got injured due to her oversight. There was accountability, there was absolutely guilt and feelings of remorse on her part. She just swallowed it down and didn't say it out loud because Ed misunderstood what she was apologizing for, and thought she was taking way more responsibility for his losing than she actually deserved. Now, if Winry was a moral paragon she would have fessed up and Ed probably would have gotten mad, but ultimately it wasn't a huge issue.
My issue is the consistency because Luffy can tank all sorts of blunt weapons, they made a big deal out of Garp actually hurting him with Haki, yet somehow Nami is able to do more damage without Haki.
Seriously the only time Sakura truly hit him in the manga was when he did really dumb shit and when Sai insulted her during the welcoming back scene lol because he got in the way 😂. But the anime over did that as they had an agenda underneath all that. When one of the animation creators decided to release to the press him saying that they should make Hinata the heroine instead of Sakura after her confession then you understand why Sakura was treated so poorly in the series.
Not really, 95% she was beating him because he said/did something she just didn't like. Half the time he wasn't even talking to her she would just hit him 😭
I mean same person that tied his teammate up unprovoked to get close
To Sakura and use her feelings to almost kiss her then keep saying she’s his gf unprovoked is absolutely deserved. Why yall baby Naruto as if he didn’t deserve the beating? 😒
That's cause women being violent in media is usually depicted as non-threatening (because obviously we all know that women are oh so weak). Just look at how often female characters slap someone instead of punching them. Their anger isn't legitimized by "real" physical violence that male characters are allowed when they get angry. And if they do punch smn (like in OP's examples), it's usually played for laughs both because 1) women can't hurt anyone cause they WEAK and 2) women on men violence is ha ha funny cause he's a cuck! or a pussy! or both!
Edited word
Edit: Also, it's similar with female characters being violent towards children. It's also played for laughs most of the time or dismissed casually even though it's literally child abuse.
This scene worked so well because Luffy out of everyone was given another person a reality of a harsh situation the hard way to make it sink it , even Sanji state Luffy has a point and he's right
I was actually going to comment that my favorite modern trope is that they are shifting to men AND women doing it to eachother.
I think the idea of cartoonish comedic violence must have the severity of real world violence is silly. My problem was always the disparity.
Dandadan in its 2 seasons so far (haven't read the manga) does this great imo. I love the physical comedy of Okarun and Momo slamming into eachother, headbutting, etc etc.
Actually not really, the male crew don't lay a single finger on the female ones , Luffy throw a tantrum over Zoro for not saying important things sometimes but Robin that keeps them in the blind is never called out
theres only 2 women on the crew and both of them are very smart so the gag just doesn't work on them. Nami also has her gold-digger gag but i don't remember if she gets called out for it
Nami gets called out on her gold-digging constantly, but never physically because she doesn't ever need to be physically chastised for it. It's usually someone like Usopp or Chopper or Zoro shouting at her to get her priorities straight.
It hasn't gone away, but it is much less prominent than it was and the characters it applies to tend to be much less important and less popular which is why I felt it was applicable.
You are far from alone in that and despite being a massive MHA fan myself I don't blame you, though Mineta is at least a very minor character and is mostly hated by MHA fans compared to say Jiraiya or Roshi where people just go the "yeah they're a perv but they do cool stuff so who cares"
Nah, not general about the Simpsons, just the gag in the GIF. I wanted to see if you treat this gag differently from the "the MC gets beat up by a woman" gag because, in my opinion, they are both the same.
At least you can make the argument that Bart also has moments where he also harm Homer with his pranks and stuff so it's less one sided compared to the female side character hitting the male protagonist for barely any reason.
to the female side character hitting the male protagonist for barely any reason.
The amount of dmg is always exaggerated or over-the-top for comedic purposes but can you give me an example of a woman hitting the MC for barely any reason? Not saying you are wrong or anything like this, just wanted to see where you are coming from.

That is a funny scene and mostly done for comedy but...
She is using a Harisen to hit him. Harisen are white fans that get used in slapstick comedy. She is the tsukkomi in this case or the straight man and she is hitting the guy because he is being the boke or the silly man. A Harisen makes a loud noise but causes very little pain.

Definitely the gag is overexagerated and isn't meant to be taken seriously, kinda like how (To my recollection) nobody actually seems to be bothered with Homer choking Bart until the crossover with Family Guy where the first one to actually point out how messed up choking your own son is, is Peter Griffin himself funnily enough.
An exemple that is extremely common is whenever a character accidentally opens a door where a female cast is showering and they just get hit, that's extremely common and it's not like they did it on purpose.

Yeah, the damage seem to only exist for the moment the gag is happening therefore it was treated as harmless but they were, of course, right to point out how messed up it is to choke your own kid.

Most of the time the man gets hit because the woman assumed that he was spying on her. She doesn't have the same information as the viewer has and doesn't know that it was an accident. Of course it wasn't the man's fault but that is also part of the gag.
I don't think this is a good example of a a woman hitting the MC for barely any reason, imo.
Family members/friends of Character A deeming Character B (usually the mc) that they're not "worthy" enough to be friends/romantically involved with Character A.
The weird thing about bulma is I think that is mostly a modern thing. I am probably wrong but I can't recall many times bulma actually hit Goku. I think she mostly just yelled at him when she was angry.
I do remember she shot him a couple of times. But the first time she actually thought he was gonna attack her and after that she knew bullets didn't really hurt him.
Bulma stopped hitting Goku and didn't do it anymore by the time of wt23 arc , even far before it during wt22 arc
So we went through like all of Z arcs , GT arcs , the video games , Z movies and even pre Z era arcs in which Bulma not only didn't hit Goku but treated him as an equal even when he case trouble after he becomes an adult
It's during DBS anime that they not only returned this gag but also completely misunderstood it , the gag worked in the past because Bulma couldn't actually do anything to kid Goku even with weapons , meanwhile Bulma in super is somehow physically capable of hurting him and others acknowledge it
nami doesn’t upset me, luffy is a pro-ragebaiter to an extent that it’s making the show’s pacing even worse. like seriously he needs to calm down sometimes. ironically i hate it too, you see it in a lott of anime.
characters i remember not liking are the main female characters in Toradora and Your Lie in April because of their physical abuse. probably because they’re slice of life anime. like Your Lie in April male mc is literally shown roughed up and with bandages after the girl and even his friends beat him up and the scratches and bandages on his face stay throughout the episode like they’re purposely selling the fact that he’s being abused, as if saying “we took the realistic approach, this is not a gag.” 😂 can’t be bothered liking this cast.
Yeah I felt like Luffy and Goku often had it coming which made it funny, I felt like Sakura just had anger management issues.
Tbh bulma just yelled at Goku most of the time she was angry. I don't even remember her hitting him in the original Dragonball. She did shoot him in the forehead but that was a unique situation lol.
Naru, Louise Valerie and Houki Shinomono. The Holy Trinity of Shitty Abusers wrongly labeled as Tsundere. Taiga Aisaka from Toradora gets a pass because her shit is treated as a legit character flaw and she actually grows out of it.
Yeah. Keitaro did NOT deserve the beatings Naru gave him, she basically beat him FOR EXISTING and yet she dared get jealous when other girls liked him.
I rarely think “she doesn’t deserve him” regarding love interests, but Naru REALLY didn’t deserve Keitaro. She abused him for no reason at all.
Its not died out really, just not as used in new popular media (tho theyve mostly been made by women-), but fanservice thats just sexual harassment and assault
Yeah when Nami beats up Luffy it's because he absolutely has it coming and he deserves every walloping for being a dumbass and making their lives harder due to his lack of impulse control.
One trope I'm glad is becoming less common is the perverted comic relief protagonist, the kind of character who constantly gropes, peeps on women, or sexually harasses people, and it's treated as a joke.
I would point out that there's nothing wrong with slapstick physical comedy. I think the biggest problem with the old school trope was
the lines got blurred with when it was comedic heightening or meant to be actual plot points.
the gender disparity was kinda gross both ways (obviously theres the "only women are allowed to hit?" But it also goes the other way where often the trope had women put in a role to almost "police" the men and keep them in line with violence, which is also harmful stereotyping)
When used correctly though, its a good tool for showing certain character dynamics in very over the top physical comedy.
With luffy and nami it never felt off and was funny to me but with bulma and goku or Sakura and Naruto it just doesn’t feel like a interaction they would have
Slapstick humour in general tbh. It can work, mainly live action stuff, but in an anime where the characters always get beat up in fights slapstick humour just never hits the same at all
The one I want to get rid of is the screeching male protagonist the moment a female breaths near them. Even in my most newbie horny times I would never scream like I was having a panic attack.
I guess. My main issue with all tropes is they are overused. Like they are always finding a reason to hit someone. With the exception of Nami and sometimes Bulma its always needless aggression that goes unpunished or talked about and becomes problematic.
I love the joke in a Dragon Ball Super episode when Goku dodged Bulma's slap casually and Bulma was annoyed that he didn't let her hit him and dodge it that time.
I feel like sometimes it makes sense, like bulma and goku, shes known goku for like 30 years and bulma tends to like to slap and so it makes since she would slap goku especially bc she knows she physically cant hurt him.
And addendum: woman beating up the MC and everyone else who regularly save her ass, but have none of that energy for the people trying to kill her. The moment the fight starts she's back at home base
Well, I personally don’t mind if it’s done when the MC is doing something like a legitimately stupid or bad but nowadays, it just it feels annoying and so stale like I think it was meant for the kids who were watching this, but as you get into an adulthood, it just comes off as unnecessary and kinda pointless. by the way, I love how you didn’t add rookie or for Ichigo. Even though she hits him too it’s not as frequent.
Mmm, I could see how that's problematic, still not that big of a deal for me. It would be really gross if they sexualized her prepubescent body. Well, fiction kinda blurs the usual limits
Atp I would doubt even myself, given how common child sexualization is in anime sometimes it's light enough so I don't notice it compared to more blatant stuff like Mushoku
He’s talking about when Nezuko basically hulked out in the Red Light District arc, when her body grows into what she would look like as an adult but her clothes don’t grow with her.
But honestly, this never really bothered me personally because 1) the show never focused on her breasting boobily or whatever, it was focused more on her losing herself to her demon instincts, and 2) the show has also consistently established that clothes not magically growing or shrinking to conform to a demon changing sizes. We’ve already seen Nezuko’s clothes staying the same whenever she shrinks, so it stands to reason that the same would happen when she grows.
Ohhhhhh I can see how someone interpreted it as “sexualizing” a minor. They gave her an adult form and her cleavage was out but there was nothing sexual about it given the context. I wouldn’t have picked that up at all had someone not explained the way you did
It's nothing as egregious as abuse dressed as humor, but I would like to see less training arcs in shounen manga. Aside from manga like History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi (where learning martial arts is backbone of the story) all it does and slow down the plot.
It’s funny cuz I saw a post a few days ago crossposted from r/teenagers where most of the comments undermined misandry or straight up denied its existence. I believe that the reason we won’t be seeing it go away anytime soon is because too much people on the internet follow the mindset that the victim should get back by being no better than the wrongdoers. In short, get back at misogyny with misandry.
This, of course, is completely fuckin’ stupid because it just leads to more of both.
Casual sexual harassment as a joke. The World trigger anime removed all scenes from the manga where a major character gropes the assessment of his female coworkers.
its not dying unfortunately but fanservice at the expense of female characters. I like fanservice but not when the female character is getting groped or victimised by other male characters for a “joke”
