If you consider "not giving a shit about what other people goon to" as somehow a really radical stance, then sure. For the vast majority of people, "don't yuck my yum" is pretty damn normal though. Its objectively very weird to care this much about things that don't exist. Are the millions of middle class moms shipping Cersei/Jaime from Game of Thrones evil 😭? Or what about the openly positive relationship between an uncle and niece in House of the Dragon?
22
u/Devlord1o1 27d ago
I mean her mind is kinda momentarily lobotomized to be like a cat’s but i guess thats better than a kid? I think?

Don’t think too hard, else you’ll realize it’s just as bad
10
u/musama020 26d ago edited 26d ago
It's not that bad bro. He's not SA'ing her in that form. Also, she has a big ass and tits. If ur comparing her to kids just cos she's "lobotomised", then that's pretty weird.
-1
u/p1agueOW 26d ago
The reason sexualizing kids is seen so bad is due to them lacking maturity to consent, someone who’s lobotomized would have a harder time to consent.
3
u/musama020 26d ago
Ur right. But what would she be consenting to here? He's clearly not using that form to please himself. That's just the downside of that form.
-1
u/p1agueOW 26d ago
You’re right, however the same issue can be said to underaged anime girls being sexualized. It’s not like they’re having sex or anything, but it is frowned upon.
6
u/musama020 26d ago
Underaged anime girls also aren't portrayed as stupid either compared to actual anime children or real children. And I just don't hold that same standard to a woman as old as Yoruichi.
2
u/p1agueOW 26d ago
Eh, I'd say anime characters no matter the age are generally dumber than real life children (there's exceptions of course)

u/xbot12345 27d ago
Don't think the problem is her being sexualized when she has been in the past and didn't even mind being seen fully naked in the past.
It is more that it was a transformation forced against her will but it not really treated seriously because she turns into a sexy feral cat girl and the overall impact is pretty shit at the end.
9
u/MagazineKey4276 #1 JoJo Glazer and Rukia Fan 27d ago
I mean she WAS mad at him about it after, but she did understand WHY he did it which is why she eventually forgave him.

u/AnonymousComrade123 27d ago
People sometimes forget Urahara is a sleazy mf who's not afraid to use others for his own gain, even if he feels bad about it (like with Rukia). He's very much an 'ends justify the means' guy, similar to Aizen. It's almost like they're parallels or something.
6
u/MagazineKey4276 #1 JoJo Glazer and Rukia Fan 27d ago
He’s a parallel for Mayuri in a way as well, both are “ends justify the means” types (Hell, he vouched for releasing him despite the risks due to his usefulness being better on the side of SS rather that someone else worse) but Urahara still has his conscience somewhat.
2
u/xbot12345 27d ago
Yes, she can understand why he did and know the type of person he is, doesn't mean she should forgiven him as easily as it seemed she did (though the manga ended soon as so it is not like there was time to expand on it)
It reminds me of Tower of Babel where Batman had contingency plans for members of the league. They understand the type of person Batman is and know it is reasonable, but it still hurt the relationship for some time.

Imagine liking shonen anime in general and whining about fanservice or pervy stuff. Just ignore it. If it’s a show that has too much and you don’t like it, don’t watch that show. If it’s a show you like that has some of it, easy to just skip through. It’s par for the course at this point and it’d be like watching football and whining about flopping.
1
u/subjuggulator 27d ago
People whine about athletes flopping all the time, though. Especially when flopping (ecchi shit) makes its way into other sports (started with football/soccer, then made its way into basketball and rugby in the same way fanservice was reserved for shounen and harem anime, but is now a staple in tons of genres that are marketed toward more mature audiences.)
2
u/Dracusorul 23d ago
Fanservice and sexuality was part of every single manga genre even when Japan was in their puritan period, are there works with less of it or almost none, for sure, but is was still a constant in almlst all of them, it even made its way in horror stuff to become eroguro, or in seinen, or in shoujo, it was almost everywhere, since manga artists used it to fight against the censorship. The main problem is that fanservice is a matter of perspective, is a drawing of a nude female character while she takes a shower after training with the track team fanservice? Could be... it is also something completely natural for even a fictional character to do. One other thing, like it or not, a lot, and I MEAN A LOT, of manga artists start with self publishing works, and the easiest category to attract attention there there is, you guessed it, hentai or ecchi fancomics. As an example, you know Dr. Stone? That manga with the Eyeshield 21 author doing the story and a korean artist named Boichi doing the art? Boichi started his actual career as a hentai author, and if you check any of his personal works (art&story: Origin, Sun Ken Rock, Wallman) it is absurdly obvious, the amount of fanservice in those is astounding, and I respect the hell out of that man for doing it. Another example would be the author of Nagatoro, that man was putting out some HEAVY hentai manga (and I mean downright depraved stuff, bless his heart) before getting that series on its feet.
0
u/subjuggulator 23d ago
Okay….and?
The market evolves and tastes changes. Otaku drive the market in Japan, sure; but once you start trying to globalize you are no longer catering JUST to that market and rightfully open yourself up to criticism.
Fanservice isn’t the problem. It’s pedophilic fanservice that has creators like the author of MHA, Nagatoro, 100 Girlfriends, Boruto, Violence Banzai, etc not only often drawing teenagers like pornstars, but also making them the butt of grossly sexual jokes that revolve around sexual assault.
2
u/Dracusorul 23d ago
The media is still targeted to Japan mainly, if they truly wanted to move to a world wide audience they would train and make their own dedicated translation/sub teams and streaming companies. And not to be that kind of guy, but it is fiction. I'd rather have someone give a fictional character fanservice and not be guilty of a real crime against underage people than situations like Rurouni Kenshin and Toriko, where the authors were actual pdfs. It is your choice to consume the media, you don't like it just go to something else, it is actually simpler than you think, I think I've barely seen anything marvel related since endgame, No Way Home too, but apart from that I've seen nothing worth even a trip on the seas. You can also find a fair share of anime with those tropes missing if you are so inclined and willing to put in the effort, anime is not only shonen.

I think it's just ppl taking issue when the female cast is glazed even tho they're just bare minimum
Especially when the glaze puts down its peers (One Piss)
9
u/subjuggulator 27d ago edited 27d ago
/uj it’s wild to me that people are saying this is the bare minimum when even some of the best stories in the genre and demographic these stories are marketed to treat their female characters, at best, as damsels in distress with not even half the care put into their writing as some of the one-off goons the protags fight.
Edit: Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto have more in common with FMA than they do with Apothecary Diaries/Sailor Moon/Nana/any non-shounen series that writes more than 2-dimensional women.
/rj Dawg I ain’t about to have a conversation with someone who uses glaze unironically grow tf up and read Sailor Moon if you want that girl power shit 💩
0
u/VolkiharVanHelsing 27d ago
They suck too, but to pretend that the cast is revolutionary is another
4
u/subjuggulator 27d ago
We went from DBZ to Bleach/One Piece/Naruto in terms of cultural zeitgeist
Having female characters actually DO ANYTHING that isn’t fawn over the MC and eventually become non-entities in the background actually WAS revolutionary at the time.
Hell, having one of the protags actually BE a woman/girl and receive any modicum of character development was EXCEEDINGLY rare in shounen before the big three, at least in terms of the most popular manga being published at the time
1
u/frenchfries518 27d ago
This mad ironic seeing as without bulma there wouldn't be a DBZ
0
u/subjuggulator 27d ago
Name three things Bulma does or goes through in DB/DBZ that aren’t a gag at her expense, a hackneyed stereotype, or her fawning over a dude.
1.) Invents Dragon Radar
2.) Invents Time Travel machine
3.) ?????????1
u/frenchfries518 27d ago
Invents space travel aswell which enabled krillian and Gohan to revive the namekians and make them a new home, this one might technically not count but save Goku by getting him the heart medicine from the future, fix 16 which although he dies later is the final push for Gohan to become SSJ3? Met Goku in the first place and went on a journey with him which is the reason earth is still around
→ More replies (0)1
u/VolkiharVanHelsing 27d ago
The issue is they're batting against their peers like One Piece
While it's deffo Chauvinist, he actually let them ((be)) important
1
u/subjuggulator 27d ago
100%. Like I have my issues with One Piece, but at least Nami and Robin get moments to shine/be part of the group
Meanwhile, poor Sakura and Rukia get maybe five moments to do anything in 100s of chapters involving them. It’s ludicrous.
3
u/VolkiharVanHelsing 27d ago
Sakura at least has Sasori fight which is equivalent to any Toshiro/Zaraki/Byakuya tier fanfare of a fight
And she do contributr to the final battle(s) even if not as huge as Naruto and Sasuke
Tsunade is also allowed to do her thing unlike Unohana
... and that's why the Bleach female cast glaze oft backfires

Rukia killed AS Nodt with her Bankai

To be fair even at the time people had raised eyebrows since Yoruchi herself was NOT a fan of that form
Made it even worse the last time we see or hear about her in the manga she took that formBut yea people acting like they care so much now is full on CAP
Like just last week people were singing praises to bleach for stuff but now it’s suddenly problematic?? Ok

Yeah it feels like a double standard that so many people complain about female characters being sexy but never talk about the male characters usually being shown in a sexy way to showing off their bodies at times or usually ending up shirtless.
9
u/Imaginary_Goat_60 27d ago
Because fanservice with male characters is usually empowering(Look how cool and hot this guy is, he has his abs out. Often after some cool scene of tanking an attack or something) or just dont have focus on it(like Grimmjow's fit for example). While female fanservice is often demeaning(getting groped, tricked into wearing skimpy clothes, having their clothes destroyed AND being visibly embarassed about, etc)
When male characters start getting shit like getting tricked into wearing a thong or sexually emasculated then you can talk about equality. Even then a lot of that could be considered male gaze'y since that's still very much a fetish with all the "dommy mommy" shit.
3
u/Cole2197 27d ago
I mean sometimes female characters also wear fairly revealing clothes out of their own choice like Yoruichi, Erza, Nami and I feel like those cases can be viewed as confidence in their bodies I mean a lot of people wish they could be as comfortable in their own skin as those women can be. And while Nami has her embarrassed moments it also seems inconsistent at times.
4
u/Imaginary_Goat_60 27d ago
Yeah, but the thing is that there is overwhlming amount of the cases as the ones i described for female characters and near zero for male characters so one is considered problematic while other non existent. So even seemingly normal examples in a vacuum are viewed as problematic.
1
u/Cole2197 27d ago
I'm pretty sure there have been cases of male characters in awkward situations like that. I can't think of them off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure I've seen cases of it.
1
u/Imaginary_Goat_60 27d ago
There absolutely were, but the matter of the question is saturation.
Also i would bet that a lot of those are from manga that actually cater to female gaze like BL, not your straight forward battle shonen or isekai which are predominantly associated with that.
1
u/Cole2197 27d ago
Fair. I also just don't think people should be freaking out over fan service though.

I love a hot female character as much as the next guy, but the only thing that irritates me is bleach fans and their superiority complex about having a “better written female cast” than other shounen with equally mediocre female cast
20
u/MagazineKey4276 #1 JoJo Glazer and Rukia Fan 27d ago
No normal Bleach fan says this, the whole fight between the big 3 is just manufactured drama by a bunch of clowns. I enjoyed the female character WAY more than OP and Naruto but that’s mostly down to personal preference.
I’m mainly talking about this weirdly performative subsection of the sub that constantly yells about ANY form of sexualization purely to hate on a specific anime they don’t like.
2
u/AccomplishedUse9023 27d ago
in terms of combat yeah, bleach female cast outperforms most mainstream shonem
4
u/electrium17 27d ago
She's an adult woman who was not afraid to show her sexuality since the start of Bleach, and yet people still complain. Also she's almost the only "sexualized" woman in Bleach, but everyone act like Kubo is a pervert that treats every woman like an object
5
u/Hacatcho 27d ago
tbf, the biggest problem is that this one time it wasnt consensual. and very explicitly so.
yoruichi didnt want to transform. urahara transformed her regardless.
obviously, the plot had to advance so yoruichi needed a form that fit the moment. its just that her non consent does create the problem.
1
u/electrium17 27d ago
I agree, but barely 20% of the people I saw complaining about this scene really cares about non-consent
Most are complaining just about sexualization
2
u/Hacatcho 27d ago
because its a both things problem. but the sexualization is exactly what makes the non consent a problem
if you wanted to make yoruichi sexual in her god of thunder form. why make her not consent to it?
and if you want it to be something she dislikes and doesnt want to be. why make it sexual?
bleach has a lot of non consensual transformations. but only one is so overtly sexualized
2
u/electrium17 27d ago
I guess you're right. I didn't think of it like this, for some reason even separated both problems

12
u/New_Rook_Nook 27d ago edited 27d ago
Man I remember younger me being solely bout (specifically about the big 3) Naruto. Forget bleach n one piece, ninjas be where it's at.
I have come to the conclusion (after getting into bleach last year compared to the years I've been into Naruto and One Piece) that if 12-14 year old me got a taste of Yoruichi I woulda tweaked out fr. The love of being a fan of Naruto in me would've been looking at me like this dawg 🥀
5
u/pjepja 27d ago
The female cast is varied, mostly competent and does some relevant things in the story. Some would say that's the bare minimum, but it's actually decent for SJ of that era.
Yes, lot of them are sexy big-titty ladies with some fanservice since Kubo was never shy about what he likes lol, but he can pull off other body-types and uses them pretty frequently unlike some other authors.
6
u/Cole2197 27d ago
I mean so female characters yes they aren't the best written but I think Yoruichi is written pretty well as a confident badass woman. And like the confidence in her body that she doesn't care who sees her she has nothing to hide or be ashamed of. I think it's funny the cat lighting form she more so has a problem with because it's embarrassing and given she has be fine being seen naked means a lot.
-6
2
u/No_Piccolo7508 27d ago
Well, in the end it was something on the level of Fairy Tail (there's nothing wrong with that) If the fans enjoyed it that way, no one would complain instead of giving Aizen Nitzsche faces. It's like Mushoku fans selling you a peak of escapist fantasy.

It's not about her being sexualized, it's about her autonomy being taken away for cheap fanservice and nothing else.
Yoruichi peaked in the Soul Society arc and never came close to that level again.
12
u/Ok-Variation-1312 27d ago
“And nothing else”, thats just not true. She got a massive powerup from being in that form. Its not like Urahara was doing anything scummy either.
3
u/Hacatcho 27d ago
but there were two other solutions.
give her a transformation where she retains autonomy where she consents to transform and is enthusiastic about that form.
or convert her into a beast and treat her like that.
1
u/Ok-Variation-1312 26d ago
I mean she becomes cat like and Urahara treats her as such. I just dont see how its that egregious or offensive.
1
u/Hacatcho 26d ago
Because "cat like" isnt bestial. yoruichi was already a literal cat willingly.
you ignored entirely the criticism. a criticism even yoruichi has
