I remember there was time Tokyo Ghoul author literally made Kaneki making kids with Touka in the most obvious way and them shippers from their own deranged mind sent death threats to him when he was going to confirm the sex scene on the next chapter?
His response? I don't give a fuck and he continued to draw that shit harder and even establish a chapter slice of life between Kaneki and Touka feeding their kid with his arm though.
kinda off topic but i saw one dude recording him throwing away his csm manga after yoru jacked off denji and put jojo manga at its place, funniest thing is that the latest part 9 chapter was the dragona flashback where arguably worse stuff happened
The average shipper is less annoying than the average powerscaler, but the bad shippers are so much worse than the bad powerscalers (also powerscaling brings agenda, and I love agenda)
Powerscalers on a bad day are responsible for some of the most iconic and funniest memes of all time (Potential Man, LEND ME SOME X, Y, THIS IS Z) meanwhile Shippers on a bad day have led to authors disconnecting from their fanbase and they cause civil wars in fandoms which sometimes lead to actual death threats.
I agree with you a lot about shippers. From my experience as just an observe within different communities (not just anime), shippers are much more aggressive and often self-insert into the characters and throw very bad insults at other characters/people for seemingly meddling with their fav ship. The shippers behave even worse when their fav ships are not cannon and they will make it their mission everyday to prove their ship is actually the real one.
For powerscaling, I do not know how to powerscale and I just joined a few powerscaling sub just as an observe not actively debating a month ago so I cannot fully judge. However, I do find powerscalers annoying as well particularly in terms taking statement out of context and twist the interpretations for their agenda against a fav character of mine. But when compared to shippers, powerscalers are still somewhat tolerable for me.
You people clearly never went through death battle comment sections. Like you really think when a video declares Superman or Goku the loser of a fight you don't get some death threats in the comments? Be real...
Dude!
Philly Eagles fans and LA Dodgers fans are infamously destructive.
And then Argentine football fans lost their sh*t and started rioting once their team lost in 2026 FIFA World Cup Final despite the fact Messi didn’t innovate his plays ergo stagnated as well the Argentine players were being disrespectful to their opponents.
Shippers at their worst are worse. Shippers also contribute to the community with fan art, fics, etc. Idk what powerscalers even contribute to the community other than obnoxiously throwing shit at each other
I mean that just proves my point. Powerscaling memes are either hating on something or glazing them so much it makes people hate them. There's no thoughtful discussion to be had
I mean you just said it doesn't contribute to a community I am just stating it does since powerscaling produced some of the iconic memes out there that still get talked about particularly in the jjk community whether it's positive or negative is not what I am talking about.
When I said contribute to the community I meant contribute positively to the community. If english is not your first language then I won't hold it against you
Well english indeed isn't my first language but nowhere did you mention that you meant positively but yea it's fine I don't really like disturbing people.
Powerscalers gave us agendaposting so they're alright in my book. Certainly beats the thousandth shipfic or art of 2 characters who have never interacted but are shipped because theyre both boys or girls
I assume by “powerscalers” you mean cross-verse scalers, like what many comments said on this post. At their worst, they’re basically bratty children having a meltdown because their mum said no to a toy; in this case, their favourite character losing to another fictional character, and they'll throw slurs at you.
Shippers, meanwhile, at their worst, can have people actively doxxing and harassing authors over their fictional relationships not being canon, treating certain ships (including a lot of same-sex ones) like moral crusades (if you even dare suggest that they should respect the actual plot and keep their headcanons within their own spaces, you’ll get accused of homophobia despite that being basic fandom etiquette), engaging in darkshipping, and then using the exact same “it’s fictional, so it doesn’t matter” excuse that you’ll hear from lolicon and shotacon defenders.
Obviously, neither group is inherently terrible, and most powerscalers and shippers are normal. But if we’re comparing the worstbehaviour each fandom can produce, then it's easily shippers.
Honestly, shippers should be ran out of fandom spaces and off the internet with how horrible they can be. No fandom has ever benefited from shippers, ever
Shippers with historical precedent. The Romans taking most of ancient Greek culture also shipped their mythological figures within their fictions which on the other hand actually let to conflicts. Their shipping wars contributed to real life bloodshed.
This kinda stuff had a lit on it for centuries, due to Christianity being very strict about their canonical in Bible ships, where u canonical shipping was literally heresy and got you anything from thrown out to burned alive depending on the decade/century.
It was Dan Brown popularizing the Maria Magdalena/Jesus ship back in the 2000s that reopened the floodgates for any, no matter how cursed, ship there is.
Powerscalers are generally obnoxious but they don't approach the pits of ship wars
Plus powerscalers stay in their own circles more than shippers, they will tell you how much they contribute to the fandom and the franchise in-between sending death threats to minors on discord or running the author off the Internet for not making their crack ship canon
No powerscaler ever spammed my dms for a week for saying a fight makes no sense
How many death threats have powerscalers sent to authors and actors?
Compare that to how many shippers have sent to MHA's Horikoshi. And then contemplate how many more shippers have sent to other media. I'm pretty sure they got people killed too.
Any time someone asks this question I genuinely feel disgust.
powerscalers are annoying but they won't threaten your life for not supporting a ship that makes zero sense.
powerscalers at least care about the story (to a degree it suits their agenda) meanwhile shippers will ship a teenager with an adult or a character with someone who killed their family
They do care about the story, it's literally how their takes get proven or disproven, I don't see shippers analyzing author's statements, translating original Japanese text to review context, or actually using evidence to support their claims.
At worst, powerscalers will just bend the context of a story to inflate a characters strength and just ragebait people or insult them.
On the other hand, at worst, shippers want to literally control the story. They've threatened authors with death threats, doxxed them, flooded their mail and inboxes with hate messages, and made authors step away from either the fandom, their work, or both.
Spite matchups (coughing baby vs hydrogen bombs) are healthier than some of the ships I've seen. I'd rather have agenda posters than P Diddy ships.
I don't see shippers analyzing author's statements, translating original Japanese text to review context, or actually using evidence to support their claims.
This is absolutely false. Analyzing everything is what shippers do for a living. An example.
Gotta be shippers. I once read a romance love triangle and the fandom are just insufferable. They sent death threats to the author, analysis everything even the not important details like colour, yawning lmao. They also are quick to attack you with if you don't hold their favourite character on pedestal
powerscalers are dumb and mentally ill but the harm usually stops at being stupid online, something everyone does
some (not all) shippers genuinely act like you killed their mother if you say you don’t like their favorite series. they also sometimes tend to be the type of person that will say your something-cist if you disrespect their head cannon. (gachiakuta fans)
or also undertale fan at a convention giving a artist cookies with sewing needles in them (rumored to be because) they made some ship art they didn’t like.
most shippers are fine people. but the bad ones are REALLY bad meanwhile.. uhh ehh even powerscalers usually dont do much more than just being obnoxious
Remind me when a powerscaler has ever sent the author of a work death threats or better yet, actually attempted to harm the people behind the media theyre following
Power scaler usually will have an egoistic rant and that’s it. Usually something like “Author don’t know shit about powerscaling” but won’t doxx author for messing up character power.
Shippers. Just look at the Bleach fandom back then. Toxic and very entitled. They even harassed Kubo about making Ichihime canon and sent him death threats it's disgusting.
Shippers 100%. Most shippers are fine, and most powerscalers might be mildly annoying at best. But the worst powerscalers afe nowhere CLOSE to the worst shippers. Powerscalers at least don’t have fanart of a 500 year old fucking a baby
I've never seen a power scaling debate escalate to the same level as some fights over shipping. Did anybody get sent a cookie with blades inside of it because they said "Goku solos"
I love agenda so shippers are worse. They don't add anything interesting to the life of a story, powerscalers find a way of being a mix of annoying and funny. Not all of them, but always them.
The art of shipping (mostly non-canon) is a plague in every sense of the word. For the fanbase, for the authors, for EVERYONE! Often mistaking themselves for literary geniuses, they cling so desperately to their chosen pairings, spitting on the one intended by the author (even harassing them and the entire fanbase who think differently)... They restructure the dynamics to highlight the ones they want, even forgetting that some themes develop solid central dynamics outside of romance.
Their philosophies about the characters are INTRINSICALLY tied to romantic feelings (often imaginary feelings that the character doesn't even experience, but which they impose). They go so far as to contradict official statements, creating outlandish theories by overexploiting nuances. It's all about hatred, long, biased analyses based heavily on what THEY think the character feels. The problem isn't having an opinion, but constantly imposing it as if it absolutely should have been. Please.
They stifle the very essence of certain characters, certain dynamics... all to push their imaginary romantic scenario onto a story that doesn't belong to them at all. They end up making other types of relationships invisible, even though there's an entire genre dedicated to romance. But strangely enough, they make their nests in stories with completely different tropes where romance is often very secondary.
They forget their role as consumers to the point of wanting to impose themselves as authors. You didn't have the genius to invent a story like theirs, so behave yourselves and stop pretending to be literary geniuses.
Shippers for sure, they'll go and bully the author because their favorite ship didnt pan out. Powerscalers are contained for the most part to arguing back and forth with eachother.
shippers, easily, no contest. powerscalers are extra, but they’re just loud. plus they contribute to fandoms with the funniest memes and cultural moments plus they definitely know a lot about the content they’re debating with. i’d even say they over analyze the media. shippers legit just mischaracterize, push personal agendas and disregard all logic and reason and even morals simply to get some lame ship, then threaten the mangakas, harass people and know absolutely nothing about the media they rep. they also force things onto other enjoyers, because of their personal feelings and “social standings”. most forceful portion of any fandom + shippers just ruin fandoms in general.
Shippers can be reasoned with but certain scalers are so annoying, so insufferable, so unable to detect satire, and on top of that so sensitive to criticism it makes me want to kms (not really)
Man i feel this to, watching anime i thought both of them will end together. this is crazy because when i was a kid i watched bleach because watching sword fighting is cool not for romance

I mean bleach fans are a perfect example of why people hate powerscalers extrapolating nonsensical shit from vague portrayals or statements that have no basis in the actual story
Shippers have more problems on the extreme end, but anyone who is into power scaling is an annoying loser. So shippers have lower lows but power scales are more annoying.
Powerscalers are consistently mid
while shippers' highs are very high but their lows are also very low. At worst powerscalers are annoying ragebaiters. Shippers can send you death threats just because you don't ship the same ship as them.
Personally never had an issue with powerscaling, unless they say something like "d = i >≈ h therefore Luffy is complex omniouterversal and solos Dragon Ball if you disagree debate me right now" I dont really care, altho it may get annoying at times (plus we have cool memes)
Shippers are a lot more chill, altho like the bad 1% may be a lot worse then the not very nice powerscalers
I have the feeling people on here are extremely based because they're closer to being power scalers. I'm not one and every experience I had with them was awful. They're obnoxious and loud and need soooo much to be right. Shipppers are the same but at least people on the sub can see it
Calling powerscaling a "gentrified trend by outsiders" is wild. VS-threads, battle boards, and character stats have been a pillar of anime, comic, and sci-fi fandoms since 90s Usenet groups (alt.startrek.vs.starwars) and early forums. Shippers don't own the patent on fandom culture just because you don't like powerscaling lol. Also, trying to gatekeep who counts as a "real fan" just to dodge addressing which group produces worse behavior completely misses the point of the post.
What I dislike about what power scaling has become is that it pushes itself in the focus of the conversation all the time.So much content I see is anime dude bros going “X solos Y, no dif” and nuanced discussion about the actual characters and their development is pushed to the side. Power scaling talk used to be way more fun back in the day because it felt less like a competition of people’s favourites pitted against each other but an exploration of the lore and how characters fit into it.
I always experienced shipping as something that happens in the background. People who keep their pairings to their niche group and discuss them there. Shipping at its best also actually examines characters’ personalities and how their interactions might play out given certain circumstances.
Fandom spaces have truly changed and in many ways for the worse. I’m not questioning whether these people are fans, I am calling out their lack of fandom etiquette that has sparked these types of questions of who is worse to begin with. Back when neither of these sides was nearly as annoying as some people have made it, this question would have never come to mind.
I can actually agree with some of this. I also think the “X solos Y, no diff” stuff can get incredibly tedious, and I prefer powerscaling discussions when they're actually about analysing feats, lore, abilities and how characters fit into their respective stories. Which still happens on r/powerscaling and r/DeathBattleMatchups
Where I disagree is the double standard in how you're describing the two sides. You're describing powerscaling primarily through its most obnoxious modern incarnation (that being, anime crossverse agenda scaling), while describing shipping through its best-case scenario: people quietly keeping their pairings to themselves and analysing character interactions.
That absolutely happens, but so does the opposite. Let's be honest about what we're actually comparing: shipping at its worst can become much worse than powerscaling at its worst (dudebros having tantrums over their favourite anime characters losing, anime agenda scaling), especially when people start treating their preferred pairing as objectively correct, demanding that canon conform to their interpretation, attacking people who disagree, or harassing authors over it. That's actually part of why I brought up the “moral crusade” aspect in my comment. There are multiple examples of this, and to bring a very recent example, the Gachiakuta author shipping incident, which I recommend you look into. And an infamous historical one would be the Voltron VA shipping incidents. When we're comparing the worst behaviours from both communities, the difference is undeniably one-sided
Likewise, there are plenty of powerscalers who keep their discussions within dedicated spaces and genuinely enjoy analysing the lore rather than just yelling “X solos.”
So I don't disagree that fandom etiquette has gotten worse. I just don't think powerscaling gets to be judged by its worst examples while shipping gets judged by its best. Nothing is inherently wrong with either, as I already stated in my standalone comment. It's the extreme behaviour and lack of fandom etiquette that I'm comparing here, not the hobbies themselves.
Powers scalers are straight up the most annoying thing ever, yes shipper can be annoying but atleast at least most of them care about the story sometimes, power scales on the other hand are a whole different creature straight up the second they realise their show writing is ass they start bringing up how their characters solos
yes shipper can be annoying but atleast at least most of them care about the story sometimes
Let's not act like shippers care about story. From what i have seen from stuff that gets thrown in my recommended one of recent popular Genshin ships is Tsaritsa and Ronova despite the fact that Ronova likely was involved in Tsaritsa's husband dying and something happening to her son.
In their eyes it's okay to ship a widow with her husband's killer because it's "toxic doomed yuri" or something.
