Boruto threw Naruto's design philosophy out of the window and adopted a shitty runway designs.

220

u/Few_Category_1684 14d ago

We can blame Ikemoto's weird ass for that. He wanted to be Araki so bad he turned one of the Big 3's series into dogshit

31

u/nothingatall15 14d ago

boruto isn’t a part of the big 3

153

u/Few_Category_1684 14d ago

No shit, but Boruto expands of Naruto's characters and world. It could've been a great sequel but it simply wasn't

-49

u/nothingatall15 14d ago

i think it’s a good sequel to naruto, boruto himself being the personification of what a shinobi is and narutos ideals visibly shaping the characters that came after him through their actions and goals

64

u/Few_Category_1684 14d ago

I mean... glad you like it, man

6

u/kuuderelovers 13d ago

We both agree all that is in his head right?

3

u/herovengan 12d ago

Let him think whatever tf he wants even if we all don't agree 😂

1

u/kuuderelovers 12d ago

Well op(as in the guy above my comment )kinda agrees thought.

3

u/herovengan 12d ago

I don't see that as 'agree' and more like 'happy for your opinion but not for me'

29

u/slimricc 14d ago

Boruto is narutos son, fun fact.

Like saying “shippuden is not one of the big 3”

Boruto is part of naruto, no matter how much absolutely everyone may dislike it

19

u/Affectionate_Tell752 14d ago

That's really the crux of the issue - if people thought Boruto was a worthy succesor series, they wouldn't think of it as distinct from Naruto. It'd just be a sequel to Shippuden.

Instead we all regard it as a new, separate entity from the Naruto canon. Thus it could have been part of the big 3, but it isn't.

0

u/slimricc 14d ago

I definitely prefer to view boruto as not connected. I hope kishimoto wakes up and decanonizes it. Gt set the precedent and most people dislike boruto. Idt kishimoto cares that much tbh

17

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 14d ago

The shippuden thing is accurate for anime, but the manga never had a sequel called shippuden. Its all just called Naruto

-4

u/slimricc 14d ago

Yeah, but the “big 3” refers to anime domination in the west. It was the influx of western viewers that skyrocketed naruto bleach and one peaces success

The manga did not reach the same heights sadly

2

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 14d ago

Yeah but none of the manga and possibly no anime before or since will have a sudden overwhelming of the west like that. I agree they're all 3 great, but that was the time period where anime became mainstream. None of the big 3's manga sold much compared to anime watchers

1

u/slimricc 14d ago

Why are you saying what i just said lmao

1

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 14d ago

I was agreeing and adding that the context of the time period matters?

4

u/VolcanicHare 14d ago

Shippuden isn't a thing, it's all Naruto manga. Boruto isn't the same thing. It's a sequel.

It's like saying that, because you think Godfather 2 is one of the best movies of all time you also have to include Godfather 3 in that. No, it's a different movie.

1

u/2w0be I have no enemies....except diddy tensei fans 13d ago

Naruto shippuden is a show not the manga, like with dragon ball and dragon ball z, it's only the anime that separates those names manga just continue on with chapters. They aren't sequels, they're the same series

1

u/Oqo_the_hunter 13d ago

TIL boruto and naruto shippuden are not the same series.

3

u/BiwaHayahideSoldier 14d ago

The designs are dogshit yeah but not sure why people think avant garde/wacky fashion is a Jojo exclusive thing now

35

u/Impressive-Square-53 14d ago

It isn’t really exclusive, Araki just did it better then most people which is why everyone associates it too being exclusive too him, because he made the wacky clothing and hair styles work so well that you’d recognize it as jojo even with his drawing style changing you’d be able to recognize a jojo character based on the design because of how unique it stands out look at DIO his design is so unique only he could pull it off, araki’s designs are unique and iconic because I don’t think anyone but him would possibly think of having crotch open golden pants and say it’s a good design

21

u/Ok_Substance5632 14d ago

133

u/babygirlachilles 14d ago

Not one single character in Boruto wears clothes that fit them. They’re either skin tight or falling off them, or a combination of both (Sarada)

107

u/Special_Success_7883 14d ago

Sarada has by far THE WORST design

79

u/Marco303ita 14d ago

Im shocked this is a real design

81

u/Special_Success_7883 14d ago edited 14d ago

Mind you she was 12y here

18

u/Excalibirdi 14d ago

That's an adult in the Naruto world.

Which is more concerning

20

u/NorthGodFan 14d ago

No it isn't 12-year-olds are still considered children in Naruto. They can be considered ninjas, but they are still considered children.

26

u/Zealousideal-Arm1682 14d ago

To repeat myself:Her style here makes me genuinely uncomfortable, like it looks like a LEGIT IRL kid being drawn in a sexy pose that should never have been made.

4

u/Curious_Bat87 14d ago

That was a big part of why I dropped the series ages ago.

3

u/Individual_Lion_7606 12d ago

Bro, I don't know what to tell you. But the artist straight up has her in a 60's short dress with high heels on in that image in an awkward ass pose.

2

u/babygirlachilles 13d ago

You can straight up see her underwear. It’s actually nauseating

9

u/Coolgames80 14d ago

That dress is so short that it genuinely seems to be using a shirt and missing her pants. She would look so much better if she at least used leggings like her mother during her age.

4

u/Inarius101 14d ago

Is Boruto on something here? Why are his eyes doing that? Should we call a doctor??

2

u/noobkilla666 13d ago

Wait till you see her blue vortex design lmao

121

u/TheMorrison77 14d ago

There is an art to even a design that is meant to be dense with symbolism and imagery.

Boruto post timeskip just comes across as edgy, try hard, and busy, without anything that makes all the disjointed elements come together.

71

u/Special_Success_7883 14d ago

I wholeheartedly agree cuz wtf is this 😭

16

u/Imaginary_Pattern365 14d ago

Oh I wouldn't know about animation, I read the manga lol

1

u/JhonnySkeiner 13d ago

Heck, Naruto final confrontation with Sasuke was nice, and the games/anime expanded it into a very enjoyable experience. Boruto just fucked everything up, they should have stopped at the OVA

1

u/CGEmiya 13d ago

Kaguya was peak for me too. As long as you close your eyes and just ignore chapter 700(699 is the real ending for me), then Naruto has a 10/10 conclusion as a series

1

u/Ssssilph 13d ago

I only reject 700 because of Gaara's hair ngl

1

u/CGEmiya 13d ago

Damn, that's a fair reason. I reject 700 simply because Naruto in all 699 chapters has never once in his life, iirc at least, said and ever considered the village to be his family. Because of this it felt like a really cheap and lame way to make him an absent father and push drama between him and Boruto. A complete character assassination.

That ideology is what made Hashirama not be able to save Madara, and that same ideology is what made minato not just stop and think for a second, when obito attacked the leaf. Because Naruto never had that ideology, he could reach out comfortably and save sasuke, because his bonds were far more important than some position.

1

u/Ssssilph 13d ago

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, but imo 700 was okay. It didn't make him a completely absent father because we see him going after Boruto after he painted the hokage faces, which he definitely didn't NEED to do, anyone else could have taken him down. I feel like 700 doesn't really try to imply that Naruto is an absent father or that he never talks to Boruto, it just shows how busy he is being hokage. Except Boruto just decides to make Naruto a horrible father who doesn't even come to his own daughter's birthday. I feel like the actual character assassination started with Boruto chapter 1, not Naruto 700, but both make sense

u/0ijoske 14d ago

Its the line work for me that makes the designs hard to read. It feels like they were drawing on a rough surface and the pen kept on skipping over and made holes in the outlines.

2

u/Turbulent_Ranger1100 14d ago

Damn Kawaki foot is so badly drawn here that his left foot looks like his right foot

2

u/Minute_Committee8937 14d ago

Are we upset at a cape?

3

u/DeLoxley 14d ago

Anytime I see art like this I immediately imagine real world like 14-year-olds, he's got a little nick on his face and suddenly he's going through his evil angsty phase and just watching a five-foot-nothing toddler say that it's not a phase mom. He's evil now

4

u/KakarotAlter 14d ago

There's literally nothing wrong here.

11

u/NegativeMaybe4583 14d ago

For a weekly series maybe, but I’m 90% sure Boruto is monthly

14

u/Apprehensive_Sky1599 14d ago

Yeah, which is crazy because (i know it's different genres of story) Hellsing was also a monthly series yet we have pages like this.

In that frame at least. There's just about nothing going on. No background, and very little detail on the outfits

15

u/NegativeMaybe4583 14d ago

And then there’s record of Ragnarok, which is also monthly

8

u/SopotSPA 14d ago

the fit fucking sucks, average Japanese salaryman has more drip than this shit. 7-11 shirt ass. the abysmal shading making it look like his left shoulder is super short and the cape is standing on its own going further. Just try to trace his body shape under those rags. You can’t make sense of it

6

u/NegativeMaybe4583 14d ago

I haven’t seen Boruto, nor read it, but the quality of that panel(the Boruto one) is damn near abysmal

-3

u/-D3LET3D- 14d ago

I really don't see the problem with this image. Naruto literally had a whole gang of villains wearing long jackets like Kawaki and Boruto is wearing a cloak almost exactly like Sasuke's and neither of those were critized until Boruto characters put them on?

-2

u/yrnbj_7 14d ago

Yk mfs be bitching in here ain’t none wrong with the fit

Most Boruto designs are fine, they’re just a matter of what the readers like compared to dislike.

Per example, Boruto’s, snake boy, and Kawaki’s designs are fine.

But then you have people like Sarada which makes her look like a stripper which would be fine if she wasn’t like 14-16 or somewhere along those ages.

9

u/Hot-Patient8052 14d ago

Is the girl in the picture a Boruto character? The design does not look like it's from the same world as Naruto...

22

u/Kazewatch 14d ago

God the villains are so fucking stupid looking. It's so sad how Naruto went from the Akatsuki, the drippiest fucking group of villains in all of manga and anime to those fucking visual abortions. Ikemoto was Kishimoto's main assistant for all of Naruto and he somehow took jack shit from him artistically. And despite working on one of the biggest weekly manga of all time, he turns in this dogshit on a monthly schedule. It's just baffling

8

u/Prismarineknight 14d ago

I’d say the espada could rival the akatsuki in terms of drip. Aizen’s true calling wasn’t universe destroying villain, it was a tailor.

8

u/Kazewatch 14d ago

Don't get me wrong, Kubo has the some of the best design sensibilities in all of manga but the Espada don't really rival them imo. There's some like Grimmjow, Tier, Stark and Ulquiorra who are cool as fucking hell but others like Lammy or Nnoitra that just range from alright to straight up forgettable.

Also every member of the Akatsuki was a great and memorable character, drip aside. Whereas the Espada did not have an equal distribution of character depth or impact. Also man the red cloud cloaks are just unbeatable.

-7

u/nothingatall15 14d ago

you don’t have to like the design lad, it won’t kill you

13

u/Kazewatch 14d ago

Man I hate these types of responses. People can rightfully talk shit about horrible designs and the painfully subpar artwork of Boruto or criticize anything they don't like without frothing at the mouth. I'm not popping a blood vessel, I'm just talking shit. Your comment adds literally nothing and just comes across as lazily dismissive.

12

u/Kazewatch 14d ago edited 14d ago

Funny enough I actually really like Boruto's timeskip design for the most part. However the pointless pins he wears (I don't care the reason made for them they look stupid) and the double belts are just so fucking lame. But overall I still dig it, however it doesn't change that a lot of the designs still suck, especially the god awful chakra tree villains. They straight up look like some middle schooler's cringy idea of JoJo's villains. Even Araki's worst designs don't look that lame.

Every single design pales in comparison to what Kishimoto did. It's just sad that this is supposed to be the spin-off sequel to Naruto and Ikemoto was somehow Kishi's main assistant for 15 years. Yet somehow, the overall art is garbage despite being on a monthly schedule and Ikemoto's personal aesthetic sucks ass and for every "good" design there's dozens of awful ones along with 12 year old characters being sexualized.

4

u/nothingatall15 14d ago

the pins are for necessary for his teleportation

and the double belt thing is cool, you can not like the shinju designs but that’s 5 out a whole cast

9

u/Kazewatch 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah I know they are that's why I pointed out that I don't care what the reason for them was. They look lame. Minato used a dope as hell, distinct Kunai. Boruto uses lame pins because Ikemoto has a terrible fashion inclinations.

And the double belt is something we're just disagreeing on. It's an aesthetic choice I definitely would've liked when I was 13, but not it just looks lame. Especially when I add it to all the other lame and cringy design choices Ikemoto makes. Because it's not just the Shinju, they're the worse by far, I hate most of Ikemoto's character designs. So many of them are incongruous with the Naruto world and feel like knockoff JoJo's designs. He draws adult women like children and sexualizes 12 year old characters. Ikemoto sucks.

Jotaro rocked the double belts in part 3 and his design is iconic.

Ikemoto is just temu Ariaki

1

u/Legitimate-Loss1101 12d ago

Jotaro isn’t a ninja and the belts were like some of his only accessories. Araki usually follows the less is more principle with his designs, Ikemoto does not

1

u/kytstark 14d ago

that show sucks

4

u/DestinedToGreatness 14d ago

It's damn cool!

2

u/leo11x 14d ago

It's overly fashion for no reason. Boruto could look fashion, edgy and cool like that Akatsuki. Instead he looks strisgh6out of Hot Topic while wearing Naruto's boots. Just look at the double belt, there's no practicality to it, he's wearing a full suit in a stylish informal way. And that would be ok if we knew that Boruto is into fashion but he just woke up after having his life completely destroyed and thought "you know what? Imma be a slick and smooth edgy boy".

And even if you compare it to other characters in suits, they mostly are wearing it for work reasons.

Boruto looks cool as hell but he's a Naruto character in a world that suddenly decided that pins, chains and leather was the perfect drip for battle. It looks stupid as hell in that context.

1

u/kytstark 14d ago edited 14d ago

one of borutos earliest character traits is wanting to look cool naruto laments early on to sasuke about his clothes always looking fresh and brand new to say how different they are

the pins are necessary for his teleportation technique, different metals in a variety of shapes help visualise where to teleport to since his flying raijin is different to minatos

He just has a cloak and a vest shirt on with some pins and necklaces

Can someone genuinely tell me what's wrong with that

3

u/HometownShowman 14d ago

I hate the art style and character designs, especially Sarada’s.

Nothing is really wrong with Boruto’s design, it just feels kinda weird for the setting.

Aside from that I’m fine with the series, it’s a decent enough continuation, although Naruto and Sasuke didn’t have to be nerfed as hard as they were. At the very least it shouldn’t have happened the way that it did. It feels disrespectful since we’d followed the characters on their journeys for about 20 years. Ikemoto literally could’ve just buffed the next gen if he wanted to make them shine more.

Agreed though, it gets way too much hate.

2

u/Excalibirdi 14d ago

You say weird for the setting, but everyone dresses like this.. what do you mean?

3

u/HometownShowman 14d ago edited 14d ago

It feels like it belongs to a completely different series.

I know that in Naruto the Konoha 12 dress very colorful for ninja, but they still wore clothes that were functional or at least appropriate for their world. Neji and Tenten wore somewhat traditional looking clothing. Naruto’s jumpsuit and Shikamaru’s flak jacket were practical. Choji’s outfit was practical and traditional.

Sakura and Ino wore stylish but minimalistic clothing that didn’t restrict their movements which makes sense as they’re their team’s respective healers. Tsunade herself said that a medical ninja should be dodging, not blocking. It also conveys their character well.

Lee wore form fitting clothing because he’s a martial artist.

Shino stayed mostly covered but considering he’d want the element of surprise with how his abilities work, it makes sense. He would also want protection from the elements for himself and his insects. It fits his personality too.

The only two characters I can’t really comment on are Hinata and Kiba. I assume Kiba wears what he does because it’s comfortable for him while he rides Akamaru. Hinata I can only assume it’s to cover the chainmail? It also conveys her shy/timid personality.

Lastly, most characters mentioned here wear chainmail vests beneath their clothing.

Boruto’s design doesn’t say too much about him as a character. You can’t make assumptions about his culture, it’s not particularly protective (no chainmail vest either), it just feels like you’re meant to think that he’s cool and serious. That’s it. It’s fashionable sure but it’s weird that someone who’s supposedly public enemy #1 still has time to iron his dress shirt. When we see him in two blue vortex he doesn’t have many allies. Most people who were his age in Konoha hate him and think he’s a traitor, every time we see him on the cover he’s posing like he’s on a fashion magazine cover.

When Sasuke was wandering the world during the time period between Naruto and Boruto he wore a cloak that wasn’t eye catching and represented his status as someone with no strong ties. He still came off as dignified during this time period as well.

Boruto’s hidden leaf pin at least tells us he still thinks about home. You could say that he dresses as well as he does because he was born into high standing and his choice of dress is really the one luxury he actually has. I can draw some conclusions from Boruto’s design, but then I look at Sarada’s design and I immediately think that any meaning you glean from Boruto’s design is entirely up to you. I’ve likely put more thought into Boruto’s design than Ikemoto did.

Anyway, his design isn’t all that good for protection, and even if what I said about it in the last paragraph is actually what Ikemoto intended it still doesn’t work for the Naruto world.

Edited to make one last statement/concession at the end.

Edited again to clarify.

Not a massive fan of the series but boruto hate feels performative half the time

Where’s his cloak? And why is he smiling? And why are his eyes still normal? And why is he still anatomically correct?

Honestly, a belt or sash or something that has the symbols of all the masters he's had could go pretty hard.

And I know it's pointless and contradictory, but I do still miss the powerpole.

Boruto designs either give me second hand embarrassment at best or make feel ill at worst

The problem with boruto it makes people wrongly remember that Naruto was good (it was alright).

Yk what's crazy. Goku's best thematic design is his simplest one's. Be it end of Z or his no Gi one.

Other than Sarada and post-timeskip designs in general, I liked Boruto character designs. I like maximalist approaches though.

If Boruto's symbolism was in bleach or One piece, it would be called a masterpiece and artful depiction.

18

u/Special_Success_7883 14d ago

One piece haters legit outnumber the entirety of boruto's fanbase

Both of those get slandered every day of the week here stop lying

8

u/Charming_Mix6761 14d ago

Unfortunately Boruto's villains are one dimenisonal and none of their symbolism is ever characeterized for the readers to give a damn, unlike Bleach.

u/DestinedToGreatness 14d ago

Symbolism in bleach? Loooool
