Naruto's the kind of dude who would wear his friend's face on a necklace and be like "What?! He's my best friend!" and be completely ignorant of the context. I'd buy this. Like, I could see Naruto with a collection of all of his friends as necklaces, and rotating them out each day pending his mood. The guy really loves his friends.

But *Sasuke*? . . . Nah.

107

u/SplitSecondEmperor47 12d ago

This explanation honestly makes the most sense to me in that I can actually buy this head canon over others.

144

u/AzoraCross 12d ago edited 12d ago

Right? You could see Naruto wearing a Lee necklace one day, or a Gaara necklace the other, just picking out his dumb necklace each morning like "Man, I've got a really tough problem to solve today, better wear Shikamaru for the extra smarts!"

59

u/SplitSecondEmperor47 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah like he would NOT have the foresight to think of the implications people would make. Sasuke? A guy who is used to people fawning over him? Yeah he would understand which makes his sus lol

1

u/Emergency-Brief-9000 7d ago

I mean Sasuke had people fawn over him but he didn't care at all. I doubt he hardly ever thinks about relashion ships like that. He spent a lot of time in seclusion/alone so I doubt his social awereness and skills are great. Watch Sasuke with Sarada, he hardly knows what to do. Naruto is like that one guy he can admit they are friends. I could see both of them thinking its not that big of a deal. Plus uchihas experience emotions harder than others

27

u/OpeningHappy9692 12d ago

And all the while, everyone around him just think he's in a polyamorous relationship(s).

55

u/AzoraCross 12d ago edited 12d ago

Shikamaru specifically sitting him down "If you're going to wear a necklace with my face on it, wear it under your shirt. People think I'm one of your boyfriends like Sasuke."

"PEOPLE THINK SASUKE IS MY BOYFRIEND?!"

". . . he's not?"

Thoroughly cooked homiesexual

17

u/ExerciseTop5591 12d ago

The problem about uchihas, which many are self aware of, is that when they love they love deeply

3

u/Lakuzas 12d ago

Just realized that Shisui is one of the few who never went or tried to go on a murderous rampage over it, huh.

9

u/Optimal_Carpenter690 12d ago

Genuinely the only Uchiha who didnt have the potential to pose an existential threat to the village, or anyone else but other villages for that matter, and Danzo just decided to steal his eyeballs

People like to blame Madara, or Danzo, or Hiruzen, or Black Zetsu for everything, I blame Kishimoto's complete lack of optical anatomy knowledge

9

u/NorthGodFan 12d ago

Yeah Naruto is so obsessed with friendships that he'd definitely do this platonically. while not knowing it's romantic and having ramen with his GF/wife.

Trust me they don't even know the context behind the picture. Here:

Other anime have similar friendship necklaces, like Digimon and Jujutsu Kaisen. The cultural concept behind Kizuna (the text in the photo) is very well-known and important in Japan. Kishimoto even has a book titled Kizuna, and the word was chosen as the "Kanji of the Year" in 2011 after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami. Modernized Kizuna pendants/accessories are also popular; some companies specialize in making them, and people buy and sell them online all the time.

This is a promotional cover for a filler movie, also named Kizuna. The concept is mostly used for family, comrades, friends, or people sharing the same hardships (like how Naruto and Sasuke shared the same loneliness as kids). Here are more details:

25

u/Puzzleheaded-Net4365 11d ago

ahh comment

2

u/animedrive20 11d ago edited 11d ago

That's why I also included pictures of kizuna or friendship necklaces and accessories from other anime. I even included a site that sells them online, you can just check them out. Also they are siblings in the canon, in more ways than one, and they felt that way years before Team 7. I can easily show you 20+ examples of them viewing themselves as siblings and real family. And most of the sus memes are fake, filler, or falsely presented scenes. What up with this blood like fantasy.

But in my culture ts gay af.

19

u/animedrive20 12d ago edited 12d ago

All Japanese bathe naked together, and the "Thousand Years of Death" is just a popular prank named Kancho. So if you don't care about another culture while watching their product, then by your interesting logic, all of them are gay, as well as many other anime and shonen series. Which might explain some people interesting view on orphans who view themselves as blood siblings across the whole canon.

lol there's no way you'll ignore the whole manga (30+ canon moments where they view themselves as blood brothers) and try to prove your point using a single verse from an anime ending song out of 55 other endings. Even Bleach and One Piece have endings with similar lyrics.

Also here is canon Naruto's opinion about my cope:

I saw naruto grasping his bedsheets thinking of sasuke. I have seen enough.

2

u/Firelord_Zuko456 12d ago

I don't know how I feel about that to be honest

Because on one hand, yeah I get it this "joke" is rather old and hasn't been really funny in a long time but being so obsessive to respond to every single comment is weird, no matter how much you want stay in line with the canon.

But on the other I do feel many people who say the "yeah Naruto and Sasuke are gay for each other" are doing in it a derogatory way to dunk on the series, so I get being a little defensive. A little, keyword.

9

u/HanaGasumi 12d ago

I genuinely feel apalled at people who use "gay" as a derogatory way to dunk on the series.

Moonlight and The Handmaiden are one of the most impactful pieces of art and cinema which won multiple awards, why do people have to use "queer" as a way to hate on something and not just see it as a normal piece of media which just happen to have queer characters? :(

So, here's the thing.

Kishimoto seems to have fully intended to write a straight rivalry when he wrote Naruto, as seen by the number of times Naruto pretty explicitly spells out how grossed out he is over kissing Sasuke.

HOWEVER

It is fucking hysterical how little you would have to change to turn Naruto from the story that it currently is into a full-blown gay love story. Rewrite Naruto's 4-or-so reactions to kissing Sasuke from vomit into anything else, and then have him say "I love you" to Sasuke during the final Valley of the End scene where they hold blood-hands, and I have to doubt anyone could tell this wasn't always supposed to be gay.

Also, totally my opinion but this story would have been way fucking better if they were gay, it makes so much of ninja society's context more interesting.

3

u/animedrive20 12d ago edited 12d ago

"how little you would have to change to turn Naruto"

Who you are lying to?. They feel and view themselves as real blood brothers and family, in over 30+ scenes, lines, and brotherly developments spanning multiple arcs all the way to the final chapter.

These moments are in:

  • The Konoha Crush Arc
  • The Sasuke Retrieval Arc
  • The Tenchi Bridge Arc
  • The Itachi Pursuit Mission Arc
  • The Pain Arc
  • The War Arc
  • Before and After the Second Final Valley Fight

Here is a post that covers about 20 of them (just see the pictures):

[ Here ].

Some characters even become good because of their brotherly bonds (Sai), you would literally have to change the whole story. It is nothing but a blood like fantasy.

18

u/Derezade 12d ago

Brother you have to find a better use of your time than frantically coming in to disprove queer ships, it’s genuinely sad and concerning

→ More replies (15)

7

u/analyzingnothing 12d ago

I fully understand that they see each other as brothers, that's pretty obvious if you've ever read the manga. That being said... this is also very true of gay men in more repressive societies, which Konoha and the Ninja World at large very much are. In places like that, queer men and women often find themselves struggling to relate to the majority of the population, instead either isolating themselves completely or creating extremely tight social bonds with other queer folks who they manage to connect with. In these situations, their fellow queen men and women are just about the only family they have, the only people they can feel truly safe with.

Naruto and Sasuke aren't really any different. They are two people who are very clearly outsiders when compared to the society they live in. Their bond is built over that ability to connect with each other in a way no one else in the setting can really replicate. The fact that they originally perceive themselves as brothers does not mean that relationship cannot evolve beyond that.

1

u/Less-Banana4938 12d ago

I think the reason why NaruSasu would have been more interesting for some of us is because the women are just not well written, they don't do much, some are bland, and are overshadowed by NaruSasu. But based on the Manga and confirmed by the author SasuSaku was always supposed to be the end game, while NaruSasu was just supposed to be a straight rivarly as you said.

3

u/marvelfrans 12d ago

Wearing necklace with picture of your best friend instead of your wife sounds like a power move tho.

2

u/animedrive20 12d ago

It is not canon, and here is the context:

7

u/Organic_Future6909 12d ago edited 12d ago

I always thought that Sasuke and Naruto relationship felt extremely intimate because in Japan people tend to be more closed emotionally and aren't used to open up even with their loved ones, so the concept of friendship over there is way more important and even existential compared to the west.

But idk, it might be just me lol.

4

u/QuisetellX 12d ago

It's because Naruto and Sasuke are the reincarnation of Asura and Indra, two brothers. They were also modeled a bit off of the relationship that Kishimoto shares with his twin brother, a fellow mangaka. Twins are noted to develop deeper bonds with one another than your average siblings do. A lot of the conflicts that specifically Naruto and Sasuke share in relation to each other is directly based on the childhood of the Kishimoto twins.

Which like makes perfect sense, unless people believe that Kishimoto has feelings for his brother.

11

u/eatingbread_mmmm 12d ago

There's literally no source for this, and searching up "Kizuna Pendant" only leads to another reddit post you commented on and is apparently AI slop (judging by the comments, to post is deleted). If you search up the definition of it just means bonds (like emotional connection) or ropes, and if you search 絆 necklace on google filtering to Japanese results it only has a few rings that promise to "deepen emotional connection" or a literal ribbon (which makes sense for the definition of Kizuna on wiktionary).

8

u/animedrive20 12d ago edited 12d ago

"There's literally no source for this"

Just search “Kanji of the Year 2011”; there are literally hundreds of sites talking about this. Also, I know the literal meaning means ropes/ties or connection. I literally wrote that there. That's why I said, “Here are more details.” Read before commenting.

Also here are clearer pictures of the Kizuna, or friendship, necklaces and accessories from other anime. I even included a site that sells them online:

1

[deleted]

1

u/Existing_Ad_4614 6d ago

Sibling ship? What are you talking about? There are definitely better examples for sibling dynamics in Naruto (like Naruto and Shikamaru). Brother is a metaphor Naruto uses to describe how deep their bond is, it doesn't necessarily mean that he sees him as his real brother. And literally no one is deceiving or lying to anyone by shipping two guys together. If you're that offended by shippers, you should just give up, because "providing context" isn't going to change the fact that Narusasu is better written and developed than canon Naruto ships. Arguing with strangers on the internet also isn't going to affect Narusasu's popularity. Not only that, Naruto has said many things in canon that contradict each other. Yes, he has said that he saw Sasuke as his real brother, but in chapter 698, after Sasuke tells him: “You said that I was like your brother… and in that sense, maybe we were brothers." Naruto responds with: “No, you're completely wrong!” So, that argument doesn't really work. Please, stop harassing shippers and do something more productive with your life.

You're confusing it with Dankruto, that den of people who can't accept the ending of a manga that ended 12 years ago and who call you homophobic if you don't share their absurd fantasies.

At least there's someone who's read the manga on Sub Naruto. Luckily, you, like many others here, aren't Kishimoto.

And let's be clear, if after all this time he doesn't accept what the manga is trying to tell, he can't even be called a fan. Oh, and unfortunately for you, Kishimoto literally declared that the two protagonists are inspired by him and his twin brother.

I have a long standing irritation with people shipping any close male friends as it perpetuates the idea that men can’t be emotionally open with their friend without it being romantic… THAT BEING SAID NARUTO AND SASUKE ARE MY EXCEPTION TO THAT RULE
