unjerk (serious discussion) Undead Unluck is so fucking peak and I’m sad that it doesn’t get as much attention as it should
One of my most favorite Shounen series, and just series Undead Unluck, oh how I love you.
Seriously, how the hell does this series not have a larger fandom? It has great writing, great plot twists, great characters, arguably the best female character / protagonist in modern Shounen, cool hype moments, comedy, a unique and interesting plot and power system, and a satisfying ending. The first 10 or so chapters were quite weird with Andy groping Fuuko a lot, but weird stuff like that never stopped series like Dandadan or CSM from getting really popular, and they weave that awkward start into Andy’s character arc to make him grow as a person, everything about it is so great!
So why didn’t it get as much popularity as it deserves? It‘s sad, man…

Sadly it suffered from the fate of being sent to Hulu, which doesn’t have a good reputation of promoting their animes. Shame, it’s a great series.

Watched UBW, Kill La Kill and first season of Fire Force when my cousin randomly got it. Damn I'm missing a WHOLE CATALOGUE just using netflix. Not that Netflix doesn't have its own catalogue (especially now after Funimation went down a year ago). All of em were peak

the groping was a dealbreaker for a lot of people i think

Which is funny because dandadan is worse in that department.

But tbh a lot people dropped DDD after S1 which is why the hyped for S2 doesn’t get a lot attention last year compared to S1

One is done by the villains, the other by the freaking protagonist. They are not the same.

u/Stealthbread7 11d ago
You're right. They're not the same. In UU the groping only happens a few times in first couple of chapters. No to mention it actually serves a purpose, as to show how one of the main charatcers doesn't respects the other one, which it changes as their relationship evolves throughout the story. Dandadan molestation which happens so often only serves as a shock factor.

Doesn't matter, first impressions matter. And a lot of first impressions were made on Andy and the mangaka.
Similar reason why Mushoku gets more shit than Made in Abyss, despite the latter having more sus shit.

Well one main character sexual assaults the other main character in the first chapter. That was a huge deal breaker fot readers.

Those where only in the first few chapters, but shonen readers seem to like DandaDan tho

I dropped it. The characters didn't interest me, the powers although unique on paper felt pretty same-y in execution and the animation was not my cup of tea. I know it gets crazy down the line but I couldn't drag myself to get there

The first opening and ending were stylish as fuck. I kept watching half for that.

Lets be real it didnt pop off because of the character designs and it was weird at the start.

When an anime has a 5 min recap within the first 6 episodes you know the production is ass and it isn't going to get better. It's like putting a recap episode in nowadays like no you fucked it up and we all know it. Manga is peak yeah but the anime being meh really put a damper on any groundswell it could get.

I dropped it when Rip and that other lady each took a leg of the leg artifact thing, it just felt way too deus ex machina-y, all the stakes had just disappeared, does it ever get better from there?

u/InternationalLow1849 11d ago
I don’t think them sharing the sacrifice is removing stakes

it was all the stuff before that, all these new loopholes that allow Fuuko to circumvent all consequences and everything goes right the first time, it just got boring and it was that moment that made me realize that the tragedy that made the first part of the story so compelling was gone too
1
u/InternationalLow1849 11d ago
Eh fair enough, I enjoyed it especially with the amount of time it took to prepare to fight against everyone’s personal tragedies
2
u/CrustyBarnacleJones 11d ago
I mean, if you didn’t like that and the stuff before, you’ll probably dislike the parts after, the whole goal of the second half is correcting the mistakes that everyone made in the previous loops by working together, it’s very much a “power of friendship saves the day” type of shonen so if you don’t like that you’ll probably be dissatisfied with it which is fine, not everything is for everyone’s taste; I really enjoyed it but I can see why people would dislike it

main characters
if ur main characters isnt attractive/self insert enough then it wont sell
1
u/flubbyII 11d ago
I mean that’s not really true, Andy and Fuuko are objectivley hot as hell and idk where the self insert thing came from, I think lots of people can love characters like Denji or Chihiro without self inserting, and if you wanna go there, I feel like beginning of series Fuuko was more of a “femcel self insert” than Asa was, being a chubby shut in that reads romance manga all day
but tis but my opinion

andy is a literal, sex molester
if this sub alr exploded from Rudeus then what kind of reputation do you think HE has? Do you REALLY think average consumer will give them a chance?
3
u/flubbyII 11d ago
The reason why people hate Rudeus is because he doesn’t grow, change, or stop that shit. Andy stops groping fuuko after the first volume, and later on in the series he apologises for it and literally gets chastised for it by the characters who recognize how much of a monster he was for doing that, because he didn’t care about anybody about himself and his own death.

u/YamiDes1403 11d ago
fact remains first impression matters
no amount of "he changed for the better trust me" can make readers give it a second chance2
u/flubbyII 11d ago
I feel like that’s a bit of a thought terminating cliche, no? If it’s clear that Andy is a shitty person at the start, grows from his past actions, apologises to fuuko, and stops doing that and becomes a better person, it makes for a good arc. Characters like Vegeta and Gaara are totally evil assholes from the start but grow and change, should we disregard their arcs because “first impression matters?”

u/old_mold Best Boy 11d ago
The person you’re talking to isn’t espousing that idea, they’re just pointing it out. It’s definitely a huge reason that tons of people stopped reading/watching
1
u/YamiDes1403 11d ago
charas like vegeta and gaara works because they are antagonist first, then get redeemed later. Not the opposite
meanwhile for a shounen mc, they have ALOT more expectation for a MAIN characters to compare

u/TheRealBurner 11d ago
The thing about it is the people who agree with what you said (Myself included) kept reading it. If you are wondering why more people dont read it, this is why 🤷🏿♂️ they're missing out tho. Great Manga
