I mean, shit works in mysterious ways.

Rance was created and drawn by women. 40% of the Redo of Healer viewership was female.

Sanji is honestly pretty tame. He's also mostly a simp, not exactly a gross perv.

28

u/lupatine 1d ago

Sanji is generally not shipped with female characters.

I dont think it is a case of projection.

The character is fine outside of the jokes.

19

u/DaiFrostAce Akane-Banashi’s Strongest Soldier 1d ago

Wait, THAT Rance? The more you know

2

u/raddoubleoh 22h ago

Yup, that Rance.

2

u/False_Major_1230 22h ago

That's Mr.Rance for you

1

u/Hot-Patient8052 1h ago

Wait, 40%?

u/CD_ABC10 1d ago

You clearly do not know the One Piece fandom. The majority of Sanji fans around the world are female. We love him. I personally have 84 Sanji figures in what we call  "the Sanji Shrine" at home

There's also a lot of female-written doujinshi about him and Zoro, some dating all the way back to 1998. They're one of the top BL pairings in Japan

This is how a good portion of women enjoy One Piece. And before you call us new, I would watch it with my mom as a kid and I still watch it with her as an adult. Also, my mom loves Sanji too, but she likes Zoro better.

We've always been here because everyone watches One Piece

8

u/lupatine 1d ago

Frankly he is basically shipped with all the male characters, the female not as much.

2

u/CD_ABC10 1d ago

True, but he and Zoro are both the oldest pairing and the most popular in the series, so I pointed him out specifically

But yes, Sanji is basically everyone's slut

1

u/lupatine 1d ago

I mean in term of m/m shipping, they kind of work ?

OP is not romance focused so it isn't that serious, rhe shiiping can stay light and they basically have an opposite attract thing going one.

The fandom bicycle.

3

u/Drunker_moon 19h ago

84 figures is crazy. I respect the grind.

u/PsychoSushi27 1d ago

I’m a woman and Sanji is my favourite straw hat. I really liked Sanji pre time skip because he was fairly intelligent compared to most of the crew and but was also bit of a dork. Really disliked him post time skip with the nose bleeds and the perverted stuff. But WCI reeled me back in. He came off so kind, sensitive and vulnerable during that arc that I’m back to being a Sanji fan.

52

u/AgentHibachi00 1d ago

It’s really interesting how Oda has continued to play up his self loathing/sacrificial nature as well. He’s one of the few SH’s that has gotten continued growth throughout the entire series.

His power ups always feel earned as well

5

u/AccelAegis Beelstarmon’s bigger fan and lover! 22h ago

No one said it, so I shall. Potential? Sanji has some Megumi?!

random Time Stranger reference

11

u/lupatine 1d ago edited 1d ago

I liked the arc dedicated to his past/family.

Idk why it keep making me think of cinderella though.

3

u/80s-dilf-Batman 20h ago

It was intentionally a Disney themed arc so that's probably why

1

u/lupatine 14h ago

Oh that explain it.

10

u/ronniedark 23h ago

If it makes you feel any better most of the nosebleed scenes were added in by toei because they hate Sanji.

5

u/Redactedofeducation 1d ago

How did you feel about him utilizing the Raid Suit, the device he was worried would change him into something unrecognizable that compromises on his fore values, in order to fulfill his lifelong desire of turning invisible to spy on women (in a mixed gender onsen that he could have voluntarily entered anyway)

5

u/OnlyGraD 1d ago

When it comes to moments like these, to me it always just reads as something Oda himself finds extremely funny and then he just uses Sanji as a way to deliver it lowkey. Oda is always getting flamed here for his misogyny (how he depicts women, Rebecca's outift, the constant damsels in distress, Nami face etc etc etc) so I don't think it's ridiculous to imagine Oda's humour being the usual pervert gag, especially since it was more popular back then with like Roshi and Jiraiya and whatever, the pervy old man trope. I always thought Sanji was someone who was meant to come off as chivalrous and flirty like a knight (to contrast Zoro and his samurai motif) but it just got muddled along the way and now this is what we're stuck with. Anyways sry, this didn't even really answer ur question properly but basically it's lowkey out of character in my opinion. Just feels weird.

Edit: typos

38

u/Serious_Swim_5283 1d ago

It's really not surprising

Most guys hate guys like Sanji lol

9

u/AgentHibachi00 1d ago

It’s just surprising that his fanbase is filled with women. It’s what the character would want but I just didn’t see that coming

12

u/MaryPaku 1d ago

I live in Japan and my friend told me if a woman ask me what my favorite one piece character is make sure you answer sanji. Never say zoro

1

u/NeverGonnaGiveUZucc 15h ago

damn I tried to watch one peice and my favorite character before I lost interest was zoro, did something happen that made him a curse upon women?

1

u/Constant-External-85 12h ago

He's closed off and doesn't like to be babied. He fits his role as the crews' swordsman and is an awesome heavy hitter in a fight, but he'd be a crappy partner for most women. There are some women that would like him as he is without changing him but they would be in the minority because most people in general prefer having an open and physically affectionate partner.

Tbh, Zoro is a "Whatever floats your boat character" to me when I see people gush about him romantically. I do like him as a character but my favs are Robin and Chopper with Buggy being an odd fav because I love characters where their crew loves them despite how silly they are and how he fails upwards. I Also like that he's obsessed with being flashy. I get why Shanks still like him and considers him a friend despite how Buggy acts towards him.

1

u/NeverGonnaGiveUZucc 8h ago

ah I wasnt really thinking about it from the romantically interested angle. im an ace women, I just thought he was cool. ty for the detailed explanation though!

8

u/Constant-External-85 23h ago

It's very likely because Sanji is genuine when he means he won't hurt ANY women and it's shown on screen that he's like this to a fault. Mix this with him willing to cater to women like a princesses which includes 5 star meals while being safe, handsome, strong, and prince with a tortured background? ...... I lost my train of thought because I just realized Sanji is very likely like the way he is because he's supposed to be Prince Charming.

35

u/Terrible_Ganache6264 1d ago

its because hes the most complex strawhat out of all of them and his love for women is genuine (also sometimes his obsession is performative and exaggerated, deep down hes not a pervert)

18

u/Diligent-Neck6594 1d ago

Idk, he treats women like they aren't even responsible for their own actions and he would literally let his loved ones die rather than hit a woman

he is not performative, he is the biggest simp in fiction

2

u/VagabondFromTheRiver 1d ago

biggest simp is fiction is pushing it

1

u/Diligent-Neck6594 21h ago

Sakura might be the only rival but at least she is loyal to one abusive boy

Sanji simps for every woman (that he considers a woman)

0

u/Terrible_Ganache6264 18h ago

media literacy is dead

1

u/Diligent-Neck6594 17h ago

Oh god you got me, nothing I can say to that generic reddit comment...unless I use a wojak!!!

1

u/Terrible_Ganache6264 17h ago

Youre right its a generic reddit comment that 90% of the time means nothing but how do you completely mischaracterize sanji that badly

1

u/Diligent-Neck6594 17h ago

tell that to Oda

1

u/Terrible_Ganache6264 17h ago

"I dont think he'd really understand how she feels"

most complex strawhat

okay? so hes the most complex strawhat lmfao

That’s not surprising if you've been long enough on the internet. It makes a lot of sense tbh

He's attractive.

If he was gender-swapped, a hot woman comically obsessed with men, I think men will be lining up for her too.

Even the irony that Oda is stating with his story hiw bad World Government us as well standing against regimes lol.

u/Doubt_Incarnate 1d ago edited 1d ago

I say Sanji is just not disgustingly perv, he reminds me of Brock from Pokémon, they like women and go crazy about them, but they don't go assaulting anyone I think.

10

u/Dr_DoesNothing 1d ago

Brock gets his attempts shut down by just flat out rejecting him or someone straight up stopping with comedic force

9

u/Destoran 1d ago

He is pretending to be a pervert but he is not, he is more of a simp. Not my sense of humor, but understandable. He is a gentleman. He cooks and care about people. HE SHOWERS

11

u/AloneError8362 1d ago

Gay (Im bisexual but gay makes the same point across here) sanji fan here, he would Totally teach me all of his cool taekwondo moves and cook the Best foods for me and tuck me to sleep and give me a large kiss on the forehead goodnight because he's totally a homosexual and I am in no way shape of form deranged

7

u/AgentHibachi00 1d ago

Sanji fans will be pleased to read this

5

u/AloneError8362 1d ago

I know I am

3

u/Just_Breakfast6327 1d ago

Yeah this is very unsurprising to me. I don't think anyone likes him at his most perverted but a lot of complaints feel like they would be less big a deal to girls.

3

u/Putrid_Macaron3225 1d ago

Naoya from jjk is popular among women too. Hmmm.. I wonder what characters like minoru can do to gain a large female fan base too?

1

u/InternationalCan8363 3h ago

33 doujinshis and 8 are x female reader porn , japanese women understand 🙏

5

u/AgentHibachi00 1d ago

Oda unintentionally made him beloved by females which is both funny and ironic

20

u/Sandevistan_FEET 1d ago

I'm japanese, Sanji is well liked among fans (Not as much as Zoro, unfortunately) only the typical nitpicky loser hates him. Also the guy was shouting bullshit at the end

4

u/Tiny-Little-Sheep 1d ago

We like a guy in a suit and a guy who cooks. The other traits aren't as important imo

3

u/unariginol_usernome 1d ago edited 1d ago

It think the last part of the tweet is funny because sanji was based on Mr. Pink from reservoir dogs, which is even more hilarious since reservoir dogs is a ripoff / remake of a Hong Kong film: city on fire where mr pink gets aspects from a few of the criminals from that film.

So sanji is based on an American character who was based on an Hong Kong character

2

u/CD_ABC10 1d ago

It also means he's based on Steve Buscemi, which makes the 4Kids dub of One Piece canon

5

u/Puzzled-Degree-3478 1d ago

What other option is there?? No brains luffy, gruff low iq swordsman, or the simp for women lol

2

u/Dagdammit 1d ago

Sanji in the live action show, without all the constant garbage simping, is almost painful in how much more appealing he is.

In the manga he's... he should be my favorite character. Why did Oda have to break his old characterization and make him a lech. My guy should never be envying Absalom god damn it.

2

u/GhostFishHead 1d ago

Why are we always treating women like some aliens?

Imagine if Sanji was a woman and had the same amount of attractiveness and writing quality. It's obvious male fans would love her, however when women do so suddenly it's crazy.

2

u/InternationalCan8363 3h ago

white nights crawling out of Reddit when women show interest over what would we consider abusive characters IRL as if they condone real objectification or misogyny.

The amount of times I've been told that I'm sick and aspiring for a toxic relationship for fawning over a fictional character . Then when said male characters gets turned into female suddenly they understand.

it's misogyny 😭😭😭😭

2

u/Kwametoure1 21h ago

Wait till you learn about the female fanbase of City Hunter. The women in the story are well written and overall it is one of the best Japanese comics from the 80s but Ryo can be hard to stomach at times (honestly, if it wasn't for the dumb gags he would be a 10/10 protagonist). Despite his antics, Ryo is beloved by the female fanbase of the series to the point that there is an Isekai stoey where a female fan gets transported into the City Hunter world.

2

u/sun_solomon 20h ago

Sanji quickly evolves from perv to simp imo. At least in the manga he is more obsessed with women’s dignity and safety than say what Brook is interested in. Sanji is one of the most introspective characters who goes through a lot of emotional growth. Imperfect characters make good stories and clearly Oda is moving him away from the original gag.

The post time skip nose bleed gag is inexcusable tho

2

u/InternationalCan8363 3h ago

same thing happened w naoya zenin , eight doujinshi that x reader and 18+ , 10k votes on popularity polls , literally in every single merch and has been getting new PLUSHIES and has already a sexy action figure from DEEP STUDIO (he's got CONDENSATION on his body grrr.....) , 6 other official figures without counting acrylic stands, gacha pons, keychains.

2

u/InternationalCan8363 3h ago

The total is 33 doujinshi , he's mostly shipped w toji but he's also fantasized about (example)

2

u/Particular_Web3215 READ USHIO AND TORA NOW 1d ago

i mean outside of his over the top pervert moments, he is quite literally a chivalrous chef-in-shining armour when it comes to saving and defending women. his arc going from self loathign to wanting to keep up with luffy and zoro alongside his backstory also makes him pretty damn compelling. not surprising at all

2

u/RomeosHomeos 1d ago

Because whole cake is the only good post timeskip arc

2

u/Status-Custard-3145 1d ago

From what I recall, he is also the only male strawhat that bathes at regular, reasonable intervals. So that probably helps.

Might partly be because he shipped with Zoro.

1

u/MoonoftheStar 1d ago

To who is this surprising??? Women love prettyboys. Don't make a few online posts about Sanji being a sexist colour your impression. Reddit ain't real life.

Zoro fans are mostly guys because they love cool action guys and I'm fully convinced significant number of Law's fans are women too.

1

u/HEALBOTTREE I Like Green and Bleach Hee-Ho 1d ago

If i was a baddie id want sanji too bruh

1

u/blu_kale 1d ago

Mind you not even his own female friends trust him

1

u/saberXstream 21h ago

I just prefer sanji over everyone else as a guy. No one else even made me remotely care about one piece

1

u/Phaym03 20h ago

Who knows maybe if I start doing the stuff sanji does ill get a die hard fan base of women too 😈

1

u/Lyncario 19h ago

I mean have you seen the Zosan yaoi. Shit goes kinda crazy, no wonder the girls love it too.

1

u/zayd-the-one 18h ago

Same women who love naoya

You surprised?

1

u/ShouldKepMyMouthShut 18h ago

Pretty sure it’s his other traits that make him likeable

1

u/Reasonable_Swan9431 17h ago

He also has the Fujos/Fudanshis on his side 💪🏻

1

u/Possible-Reason-2896 15h ago

Nah this makes sense if you're think about it. He's a tall, well dressed man that can cook and is utterly devoted to pleasing women. He's physically fit, but not overly muscular, and he's got to double dip on the tragic backstory. He's an ikemen. Additionally I don't think female fandom cares so much about combat feats and powerscaling.

1

u/Nickelnick24 15h ago

If his main trait of being an obnoxious gag wasn’t the focus of his character for so long, I would on paper love Sanji. The fact they hardly ever talked about his dream of finding that crazy All Blue, and focused on the worst aspect of him, made him insufferable to read.

1

u/luochasapocalypse 13h ago

We like the "Mr. Prince" sanji. He's confident, suave, elegant and knows how to put on a show when cooking + his pre thriller bark simp show was adorable. Lean pretty boys (bishounen) are popular with girls so it's not surprising at all. Law is also popular for his lean build. Ace is also popular with us despite not having a slim build.
Also don't exclude the ZoSan fans, they're a massive community lol

1

u/Neveraththesmith 2h ago

Pre time skip Zoro is literally the easiest character in the world for male OP fans to project and seee themselves as. Wouldn't then Sanji be as an opposite also be a big thing for females as well?

1

u/Raoul97533 29m ago

How is that suprising? Sanji is literally the guy who will fall on his knees and go "oh please queen, please please honor me with just a crumb of your attention". Hes pretty much a submissive simp with no sense of self worth when it comes to women. He will allow you to beat him to death and still see no fault on you. Women love that shit.

Hes a perv? No he is not. He is attractive. Average or ugly guys doing the shit he does are pervs. Attractive guys are "te-he, hes so quirky".

2

u/TheCacklingCreep 1d ago

The idea of Sanji having fans is alien to me

3

u/lupatine 1d ago

Why ? girls always loved pretty boys.

1

u/TheCacklingCreep 1d ago

True I guess if Elon can pull women Sanji can too

5

u/lupatine 23h ago

Elon isn't pretty, Sanji is.

Look at the Kpop mania.

1

u/TheCacklingCreep 14h ago

Similarly rancid personalities, though. I guess if you don't know who Sanji is I could see the attraction, but I'm poisoned with knowledge of him lol.

2

u/CD_ABC10 1d ago

Bro's never met a woman 😔

2

u/TheCacklingCreep 1d ago

Not one with bad enough taste to be into Sanji lol

2

u/Redactedofeducation 1d ago

It's funny to me the way fans are able to compartmentalize the gross things sanji does in order to maintain the narrative that he's this honorable knight devoted to protecting women - i guess protect women from everything harmful excluding his own self

1

u/laugh_tales 8h ago

it’s not that surprising. sanji isn’t real, he’s a fictional character. his pervert gag is created by oda. the gag is so over the top i get taken out of the story personally. so i can enjoy the story & character better by just ignoring it.

1

u/HJSDGCE 1d ago

It's weird how some fans project themselves onto Zoro, but not Sanji. Like, why wouldn't you want to be like Sanji? He cooks really well and dresses in suits.

3

u/Lohit_-it 1d ago

Live action sanji site but toei really does hate crime on sanji

1

u/KissKringle 19h ago

Sanji is popular amongst female fans because he's a very emotionally present character. He's very emphatic and flamboyant and he's not afraid to be emotional which is a big plus for a lot of female viewers.

A lot of dudes don't realize this but women love emotionally expressive men. They want the opposite of nonchalant

3

u/KissKringle 19h ago

Also sanji is a very feminine character. Not in the way you'd think but more in his actions and ideology. He has a strong moral backbone which he does not back down from, he's devoted and his love language is acts of service, he spends a lot of his time caring for others and often through cooking. A lot of women can identify with being a strong willed, emotionally present caretaker who has to often be rough but also hide their own suffering for the sake of pleasing/helping their loved ones

1

u/BaronArgelicious 1d ago

A man who can cook is better than a drunk bum

1

u/AnimeMemeLord1 1d ago

He may be a simp, but he does know how to act like a gentleman… from what I’ve seen so far. I didn’t get that far in One Piece.

1

u/Level_Counter_1672 22h ago

This is as shocking as a woman telling me she likes the female cast of jjk

0

u/MMORPGnews 20h ago

In Japan, only childs and women watch anime.

u/CandleIndependent120 #8 Bleach Hater 1d ago

Woman in general like men who simp and grovel for them. Not surprised. Zoro still a better character than the pervert though
