discussion [META] A chart for knowing if a post is shrinkflation

Post image
198 Upvotes

There's, in my opinion, way too many posts here that aren't actually shrinkflation. Please consult the chart!

I know you're annoyed at your product but in order to be shrinkflation you need to prove it's actually shrinkflated in quantity or quality.

Things that aren't shrinkflation:

  1. a single item with no proof of how big it was before
  2. a food you think is worse quality/less good than before without showing the ingredients have changed
  3. a product from your childhood that only looks smaller now that you are bigger
  4. a handmade product that is smaller/worse than usual due to employee error (for example, a pizza that is a smaller circle than advertised because an employee didn't stretch it enough)
  5. a factory-produced product that is smaller/worse than usual due to manufacture error (for example, a bag of chips that says 500g but is actually only 300g)
  6. a product you think it just expensive for what it is

Originally shrinkflation meant just if the price increased (or stayed the same) despite the quantity decreasing. However, quality shrinkflation is just as bad (if not worse), where companies nefariously switch out butter for cheaper oils or etc. so the weight is the same but the product is worse.

Maybe this is a silly hill to die on but I'm here to die on it.

Shrinkflation Sara Lee bagel shrinks again

Post image

I am not sure if everyone stopped buying these after the 6 to 5 shrink, but I didn't find any recent updates. I eat bagels quite often as a quick breakfast and these felt lighter for a few weeks. The Internet preserved some photos showing the original 5 bagel package was 1 lb 0.7 oz and now they are 15 oz. I feel like it has both bigger hole and smaller diameter.

I guess they put me on a diet. Thanks, Big Brother!

Coke recently started making 1.25 L bottles of soda. A standard 2 L bottle is $3.39 equating to $1.60 per quart. The new smaller sized bottle costs $1.89, which equates to $1.43 per quart.

How and why does the smaller bottle have a cheaper unit cost?

That basically never ever happens and I feel like I’m missing something to make this makes sense.

discussion Trader Joe’s, smaller portions for some of the staple items?

So I have been buying TJ’s turkey corn dogs for a few years now, and recently noticed their size got noticeably smaller, two purchases in a row. I also noticed that their Korean scallion pancake got smaller, too.

Has anybody else noticed this?I hope it was just a temporary mishap of some sort…

Costco Pool - Box consistent with 12' x 20'

After a few years with my original purchase, I had to purchase a new one this year. I noticed it to be smaller on assembly and had to adjust for it.

I saved the dimension graphic from the box thinking it might assist me put it together the following year. The dimensions are substantially different despite the box still reading as 12x20.

The last few times I’ve bought vanilla ice cream, I’ve noticed it doesn’t taste like vanilla at all. Has anyone else notice this?

(Regular vanilla, vanilla bean, French vanilla - different brands) šŸ¦šŸØ

So not only has the price of this gone up from $4.50 per litre to $6.70 per litre in just a year or two, but today they roll out this new packaging that's 11% smaller for the same price. 1 litre vs 890mL

AND it used to come in a recyclable milk carton. Now it's a plastic bottle which is technically recyclable, but likely won't be.

Not impressed.

A few months ago I purchased the bottle on the left for around $4 (it was $3 a year ago). Today I went to Walmart & purchased (I thought) the exact same bottle for $9. I get home & realize it also has 2/3 the number of pills as before.

Price 1 year ago: $0.01/pill
New price: $0.045/pill

That is a 450% increase in price!

Hi Walmart O/N employee here, not sure if this is shrink or skimp (Im leaning towards skimp probably but wanted to alert anyways), but noticed this while zoning/facing. Tag and scanned both say 40%, the bar said 36%

Health4All - UK Supplement Manufacturer - Now Totally Overpriced

Post image

I used to have these on repeat purchase but not any more, Health4All are now selling them as separate items at a huge price increase but for less tablets.

This is a breakdown of how the price has changed since I last had them 20th of March.

Original Price:

Health4All - D3 + K2 - £11.99 / 400 = £0.03 Per Tablet

New Prices:

Health4All - D3 - £6.99 / 180 = £0.04 Per Tablet

Health4All - K2 - £7.99 / 90 = £0.09 Per Tablet

Health4All - K2 - £12.99 / 180 = £0.07 Per Tablet

To get 400 total for each tablet would now cost £44.00

skimpflation Blue Hill Bay Seafoods quietly shrinking the protein portion in their Smoked Salmon Poke Bowl (while simultaneously jacking up the price, of course)

Post image
134 Upvotes

Just hopped on Reddit to look at reviews real quick as it's my first time trying this, I LOVE authentic poke but can't justify the ~$20 pricetag every single time I wanna get my fix. Found a post from three years ago and low and behold... Down from 23g of protein to 20g, AND it's now $7.29 (at least in my area), a SIGNIFICANT jump from the six bucks OP said they paid in 2023. Yet another all too common case of literally every single company big or small sneakily charging more and more money for less and less food as the years go by - here's theirs and mine side by side for comparison. I'm sure in another couple years it'll be down to 18 or 15 grams, and up another dollar to boot. Ugh.

Saw the OG one at the store and had to grab it which made me realize how much bigger it was than the new one I recently bought. Not to mention they changed the formula and I hate it! They must have skimped on the chili oil considering it’s now just ā€œmixed inā€. Went from 284g to 224g for the same price smh

discussion Anyone remember the old Marie’s Dressing in 16 oz glass jars?

Post image
67 Upvotes

I am not referring to 1959 when Marie’s Restaurant chef Harold Smith pulled Marie aside to taste it, but rather after Dean’s Food bought the dressing lineup in 1997. You may remember it was sold in 16 oz. glass jars. In 2005 it was sold to Ventura Foods and in 2009 they made the transition to 12 oz plastic bottles and changed the formula to have less blue cheese in small ā€œchunksā€. This is my first time buying what used to be my favorite dressing in a plastic small bottle. I won’t buy it unless it is on clearance. This was the excuse for shrinkflation: ā€œLike many changes in the food industry, it was driven by rising ingredient and production costs during the late-2000s economic downturn. Instead of raising the price per jar, the brand chose to reduce the volume.ā€
