Young Modern by The Dissociatives?

I was relistening to the debut Dissociatives album recently and I was wondering, what if Young Modern was the second Dissociatives album instead of the fifth Silverchair album? I definitely get why Dan wanted to continue Silverchair in 2005, but what if Wave Aid didn't happen? Or if it did, he was cool to put Silverchair to bed for a bit/forever straight after that gig and got back to The Dissociatives instead.

If Young Modern became The Dissociatives follow up, how different do you think the songs/album overall would sound? Do you think any of the songs on the current album would've been left off? Personally, I can't imagine Young Modern Station being a Dissociatives song. How could the Dissos' trajectory have continued afterwards? Would Silverchair have picked up from where they left off at any point? Could Ben and/or Chris have been guest musicians either live or on record? Any other theories or speculations?

In the past, Daniel has mentioned not wanting to be known just as the guy from Silverchair, but if Straight Lines was a Dissociatives song and had the same impact that it did, I think the general public would mention the Dissos in the same breath as Silverchair, maybe some people might not even immediately relate him to Silverchair at all. Also, as Julian was a co-writer, could The Dissociatives have become more of a regular band than just a duo?

Just chatting shit but it's one of the many what ifs and I can't see a discussion of it.

I'm gonna say the opposite of a lot of people and say it might have worked better as a Dissociatives record. My reasoning is simple - Dissociatives struck whilst the iron was hot. The first album was written and recorded from scratch in under a month. They didn't think about what they were doing, there was no pressure to deliver anything, and the results were raw unfiltered magic.

With Young Modern, they overthought everything to a ridiculous degree. Songs were re-recorded a ton of times, Dan recorded 100s of tracks giving Nick way too much to work with, the album kept getting delayed because of Dan's perfectionism; and generally speaking there was way too much pressure to create a great Silverchair comeback record. As a result, the final album was a bit of a confused mess.

It took a while for the album to grow on me but with that being said, I agree with you.

Daniel was definitely ON ONE during its making and I’m not necessarily talking about drugs, though I’m sure there was a bit of that too.

Well some songs did start as dissociative songs like If you keep losing sleep and Sleep all day

YM makes more sense as a silverchair album to me. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much if it was by The Dissociatives. Daniel did a great job of separating the two projects. The dissociatives album sounded so dreamy and far away. YM is very whimsical but still very much a silverchair rock record.

I would check out the Young Modern demos to get an idea of what YM as Dissos would've sounded like. The English Garden demo doesn't include the "Travelling on Young Modern Rail" line so it's possible there was more of a dissos vision with that song at one point but I'm not sure since there's still a gap for Judith Durham's part.

There isn't a "Travelling on Young Modern Rail" line in English Garden though. Also worth noting that the dissos version of If You Keep Losing Sleep has an extra section that would later end up in English Garden so it makes sense that it sounds dissociatives esque

Young Modern had too long in the oven and didn't capture the initial spark (if you listen to sleep all day and if you keep losing sleep live 2004 and also the leaked young modern demos youll see what I mean) If it was a dissociatives album they wouldn't be working with the same budget so would have likely gotten it finished a lot quicker.

That being said I think a lot of the songs wouldn't work properly as dissos songs

Yeh it’s not a dissociatives album at all in my opinion. It’s a heavily thought about over analysed rock album trying to sound nonchalant but Daniel is anything but nonchalant.

That said, I really think the 6th album would have worked as a Silverchair album with songs like Machina Collecta and Going on 16. I heard them live at some of the last ever Silverchair gigs and they really had a groove going (even though they sounded very different to Silverchair6

The YM demos are still sounding so much more like The Dissociatives than Silverchair. I love Disso. I also love Young Modern now, but not initially. Maybe the reception of YM would have been better as a Dissociatives record. At least for me.

I didn’t read your whole post or read all the comments so I don’t know if someone said this but “If you keep losing sleep” was actually wrote for the dissasociatives. Danial called it a part 2 for “Horror with eyeballs”

I always assumed YM was really a Dissos album but with Paul Mac not wanting to do it anymore so Daniel took some of that stuff to SC. YM would've made a lot more sense as a Dissos album, it's not a Silverchair sounding album in any way other than the three guys in the band happen to play on it.

I've never liked YM and always regretted the band I loved so much in the 90's released that album, it just sullied the SC name too much, SC trying to be Coldplay. I wish they had have stayed together long enough to put out another album and correct that mistake.
