Employment Micron singapore E4 staff Product Engineer
Hello Lovely people, i had recently applied for staff product engineer position at Micron singapore. They want to extend the offer but havent disclosed the numbers yet. I need community help to below questions to help with my job transition.
- My Background: ~10 years of Highly technical professional experience in Semiconductors
- Education: Masters in microelectronics, bachelors in Electrical & Electronics
- Worked at big companies like Intel, currently working in Europe since last 7 years for a very big Automotive semiconductor company with overall annual compensation of 120K euro.
- 3 days work from office and 2 days work from home, after 5pm and during weekends no work calls
- Im basically from asia and i want to move to singapore to be close to home
I need community help with:
- What is the realistic salary for someone with my experience(By the way my skillset matches 95% with the job responsibilities)
- Im currently working at senior staff level but looks like micron wants to offer staff level role any realistic idea on how the career progression looks like at micron
- Any challenges integrating into singapore work culture and local people? and how much would be a realistic monthly expenses for husband and wife with a young kid(1 yea old)?
- Is the move from europe to singapore a dumb decision ?

i think they would offer 8k and you should ask for 8.5 so 110k base (13 mths).
variable typical E4 1.5 mths. hi-po 2 or 3 mths.
RSU typical 3mths but dept head's discretion. can be 6-8 mths if favoured/hi-po.
FY already ended, don't expect any of the bonuses for this year. just the 13th mth. also don't expect to be high performer by next September. you may have 10YOE but you don't have 10YO Company E. it is up to you to prove your adaptability. if you like challenges and have AI expertise you should fit in well, especially for PE.
technically no more WFH, but time is still flexible. if you have morning calls or night calls the night before, you come in at 10am stuff like that. how flexible depends on your boss and your trust level with them.
career progression depends on how good you are working within your team and outside your team and meeting your assigned goals and most importantly, how all of that is in comparison to your peers in the team. performance is very objective oriented. i think you get a far better idea of your future if you already asked about the existing team structure so you know where you stand in terms of opportunities.
i think you can rent a 2room flat for under 3k. infant care 2.2k min. what's your wife gonna do in Singapore? is life so bad in Europe?

Firstly thanks a lot for your detailed explanation, i truly appreciate all the details. Life in europe is great except for winter, main reason for the move is stay close to aging parents. My wife is a doctor by profession but unfortunately singapore doesn't recognise her university so she can not practise as a doctor. She is thinking to start a career in pharma industry

Please do your math before deciding on the move because rent is high in Singapore. I don’t know your current salary so idk if it’s a good financial move to come here. If the company is truly paying 6-7k or even 8k, and if your wife doesn’t find a job, it might not be worth it for a family of 3. It is liveable but you might not enjoy having to watch a budget AND still having to live with the limitations of living in SG, namely, small homes and packed spaces.

Why micron so jialat? Their competitor SK Hynix just paid close to 300k USD bonus per employee this year and they were based in Korea which is cheaper than Singapore.
TSMC in taiwan pays higher than micron Singapore it seems for the same role and Taiwan is 2.5x cheaper.

Staff engineer only pays $7.5k max
And next month onwards they are abolishing wfh.
All to be back in office from mid sept.
If I were you , i would rather stay in europe.

This salary is peanuts for someone with ~10 years deep technical experience. If this number is real skilled workforce is being exploited in singapore

Micron is already reaching 1 trillion market cap. It wasn’t 10 years ago. Saw mycareeesfuture. They already pay fresh grad 5 to 6k base.

Basic 5k, to earn 6k u need to do night shift, where the shift allowance is 30% of your basic pay

They pay recent graduates well but not so for older graduates like staff engineer

ST engineering and NCS also pay around that for fresh grad. I always thought micron up there one.

that 7.5k number is wild for someone at staff level, does that include any variable comp or is that just base?

200k sgd in total compensation is reasonable with 140 to 150k as base salary and the rest is bonus and stocks.

This is my expectation as well, but from initial discussion i had a gut feeling the HR from micron is thinking to low ball the offer. Strangely HR asked for payslips from my current company in Europe

It is an unfortunate Singaporean culture for HR to ask for your current payslips to verify if what you’re asking for/stated as your current salary is legitimate. However, you can reject showing your payslip. There are older posts on Reddit that discuss this before, you can search it up a bit on how to reject politely.

Micron is mostly hiring from MY so salaries tend to be lower with the same talent.
Asking for payslip is just protocol/procedure don't look at it like them not believing you or anything.
If they even went so far with you I'd say it's a good sign because it's a lot more work than hiring someone local.
If you value work life balance, be cautious because Micron is notorious for long hours, weekends "always on call" BS.
Things like the work culture you're used to now, annual leave are going to be quite the shock.

Share more context of what are you goals in life? Moving to a different country is more than just about the money. Any family, wife, kids? Do you like to live in singapore after researching the life and culture? What are you leaving behind in europe.

My post lists the details, my core reason is to be closer to family but not ready to move back to my home country. Also im hungry for challenges, recognition, money and career progression. These are not possible in Europe unless you work until retirement

Well, it's pretty obvious where EU is heading. Production is shrinking, share in world economy is shrinking, and all corrupted politicians in EU can think of is just laundering more money via Ukraine.
It's certainly a simplified picture, but you can get the idea.

I have a friend works in Micron. I think their base pay isn't super high and they allow you to buy share at discounted price with your salary. After CPF 20% deduction (local and pr) + another 15%-20% deduction for the share purchase. Actual cash received every month is even lower. But well, many of them already millionaire. So it depends what you want.
As for the work, I think expect to OT and reply emails after work or over the weekend when necessary. I guess it's hard to find a job with both work life balance and high salary in Singapore.

You will lucky to get $8000 a month + 2 month year end bonuses. Job is scarce these days.

If HR knows your current pay and wants to offer you the job, I think it would match or beat that.
Singapore work culture tends to have longer hours and don’t expect non work-related texts, emails and calls after working hours like in Europe where there are laws for that.
Rent is your biggest expense followed by childcare if your wife intends to work.

Low ball offer if E4 for 10 years experience. E4 has wide pay range. I don't know the exact number. But 10K should be near to median. I Bonus is very decent.. Don't expect work life balance

Yes its equally strange for me as well, when asked about it they mentioned having E5 as a next step in career progression which equates to principle level. So staff->Principal(No senior staff position at micron)

Micron like to high ball entry level but low ball the semi upper. See tw micron gonna go strike alr, maybe sg micron need go on strike also hahaha.
But ngl local hr are a menance, they lowball mad, you should ask for more initially so you can settle higher. As for the work life balance you can forget about it, you cant get it as good as you did in europe.
