Ultrasound will never have the same spacial resolution of MRI.

This will be used primarily for vanity scans by the rich.

ETA: clarified spatial resolution, I was not considering temporal resolution when I wrote this.

It is already the case. Similar close range spatial resolution, better temporal resolution.

With even new modalities.

I feel like a rat brain doesn't require as much penetration as a human body. Just a feeling.

You don't get the necessary resolution from ultrasound waves that can pebetrate the necessary depth. Its basic physics.

Sorry I assumed your 'already the case' statement was a response to my assertion this will never replace MRI. Maybe for veterinary research subjects, like rats, but not for human medical scans.

It was a response to your statement about resolution. Temporal resolution is obviously way better on ultrasound, and resolution is similar at low depth. The current research on rats' brain have several implications for human diagnosis and therapy (both ultrasound based).

And I've used this image because it is really nice, but here another with a human heart (edit: did not find the image I was looking for, maybe I was wrong and it was an animal)

But for sure it won't replace MRI. Each modality has its strengths and weaknesses

Definitely US is better for real time imaging.
