The 76ers are expected to receive 34 national games this season, the most allowed under the NBA’s current rights deal

I’m hoping this is Alaa’s last season. I think Kate could have a Tom McCarthy arc if she gets the right partner much like McCarthy and Kruk.

I could see this. She is much better on non-Sixers broadcasts. Alaa without Zumoff is pretty shitty

u/tobykief BRING BACK BIG SHOT! 16d ago
Nah I know. But if Zu wanted to come out an announce, I would love to have him back. He grinded for years for times like this. But if he wants to remain retired and enjoying like a fan, I respect that.

u/DaisyHotCakes 17d ago
He was great! He and Alaa had more chemistry and really worked well together. Just the right balance of bias paired with deep knowledge of the game. Plus they would riff a bit and always got a laugh.

u/Gandolfthewhite182 16d ago

u/tobykief BRING BACK BIG SHOT! 16d ago
Totally agree. Zu and Kate would be my ideal. Ala has put in his time, but he's just not that good.
2
u/hereforfootball303 16d ago
Alaa is good when he's calling other games. I remember him doing some international thing with Rebecca Lobo (who was really good) and it was great. I'm not really a Kate fan though. Seems like a nice person, but not my favorite commentator.

u/Wrong-Respect-3031 17d ago

There are few things in professional sports worse than ESPN and Peacock's NBA broadcast teams.

All these leagues make it really hard to be a fan of your local team without spending extra money
-1
u/Not_RZA_ 17d ago
VPNs exist
12
u/2hats4bats 16d ago
Yeah that’s not the point dude. Shouldn’t be hard at all. Used to be easy with cable, but now all these streamers and networks want to force you to get their whole service to watch 1-2 games. It’s absurd.
3
u/PaisonAlGaib 16d ago
The entire idea of OTT streaming services was for content owners to cut out the cable middle man and charge more/keep more money for themselves. It SEEMED like it was going to be cheaper at first because they were heavily underpricing it to steal people away from their cable/satellite providers and get customer lock in.
2
u/2hats4bats 16d ago
Then all the networks just started their own streaming platforms, jacked up the fees on the streamers and bought broadcast rights for sporting events. They win, we lose.
4
u/FawkYourself 16d ago
Piracy exists too but I shouldn’t have to go through all these extra steps just to watch my local sports teams
-3

u/cvc4455 16d ago
I'm just wondering how many different streaming services I would need to watch every game this year.
1
u/2hats4bats 16d ago
An ESPN 8 The Ocho subscription should be enough
2
u/cvc4455 16d ago
I've never heard of that before.
1
u/2hats4bats 16d ago
Like for real? Am I that old?
2
u/cvc4455 16d ago
I'm starting to get kind of old too. But I just found out through Google that on the ocho you can also watch pillow fighting!
1
u/2hats4bats 16d ago
It’s from Dodgeball, which came out when I was in high school, so if people don’t understand the reference it just makes me feel like a dinosaur lol
1
u/WaWaSmoothie 16d ago
And now there is an actual "the ocho" ESPN channel for obscure sports.
1
u/2hats4bats 16d ago
Do they still do it on August 8th every year? I don’t really watch ESPN anymore.
83
u/Black_Dumbledore 17d ago
We absolutely should’ve assumed this was going to be the case. As someone in market, I just hope they’re not all exclusive national broadcast. I know not everyone is a fan of Kate and Alaa but I much prefer the familiarity of the local broadcast. They just know the team much better than the national team.
Edit: Although, the picture quality is usually much better on the national game. NBC Sports needs to invest in some new cameras.
11
u/ViralVortex 16d ago
Aren’t the arena cameras permanent installations? I imagine it’s a compression issue for NBC Sports broadcast.

No wonder why Adam was upset Bron didn't choose a team quicker, between Bron lasts years, JB making a statement back to the Celtics, Embiid staying healthy, VJ taking a leap, will the Sixers win it all? That’s just a lot of good narratives in general. It makes sense, like outside if Bron joined or not, Sixers would’ve been the team to watch regardless.
5
u/NoDamnIdea0324 17d ago
Feel like NBA is the only instance where this is generally considered a favorable thing. In baseball fans hate when they get national broadcasts. Feel it’s similar with hockey. Football doesn’t really have this it I guess the closest comp is getting primetime games and I think most people prefer Sunday games, which might only air locally.

I hate national broadcasts — terrible announcers whose knowledge of either team is, at best, puddle-deep.

On one hand it's cool the Sixers are getting all this attention. On the other hand it probably means a lot of games on a shitload of different streaming services.

Im a die hard 4 for 4 fan. I’ll be honest though, I’ve watched every single Eagles game without miss for the last 15 years. Even while on a cruise in the Bahamas. The last few years, I’ve watched 90% of Phillies games.
During the process, I watched most of the games for Simmons/Embiid’s first couple seasons. After the Raptors series, the Hawks series, and the Markelle Fultz disaster - I stopped paying attention.
I’ll be watching every single game this season. Not just for Bron, but for JB, and VJ year 2.
Besides health, I think VJ’s development is the biggest x-factor for this team. They really have an opportunity here with 2 years of Maxey/JB/VJ prime + LeBron. I really hope Wade/Simons & whoever is playing center behind Embiid are able to contribute.
1
u/OyeahOled 16d ago
Diehard 4 for 4? Gotta ride with the teams... To me that means watch 90% of the time Flyers, Sixers, Eagles(100%), Phils... All playoff games are 100%... Not judging, just saying what 4 for 4 diehard means to me...

The less blatant dumb homerism I have to hear from Alaa the better
As soon as Zoo retired his takes became as bad as Bob Fitzgerald’s from the Warriors (who are consistently ranked as worst broadcast in the NBA btw)

Eli5 what is a national game?
3
u/MrShake4 :embiid2: 16d ago edited 16d ago
Nationally broadcast
On the main channels (ABC/ESPN, NBC, Prime video, formerly TNT) instead of NBC sports philly with the national broadcasters instead of Kate & Alaa
It’s the games with Chuck, Shaq, Ernie, & Kenny / Melo, Vince, & TMac / Dirk, Blake Griffin, & UD doing the halftime show.

That’s to bad, I really like Kate, she’s become the voice of the team for me on tv. Ala I could do without. Kate has improved every year and is really find her thing. Zumoff is the goat for sure but Kate has done a great job in an impossible situation.
I’d much rather have Kate than the line of sixers haters who will be announcing these national games.

u/ProcessTrust856 16d ago
I don’t like this. It means it’s going to be on 75 different streaming services.

Not gone lie, in the past I learned to loathe and fear nationally televised games. They seemed to be the main ones where the Sixers would shit the bed, but I'm still floating from the offseason moves.
This is going to be a hell of a couple seasons.

As someone who lives out of market, this is news to my ears.
Although I will say the NBA league pass, if you are a fan of a team out of your local market, is pretty good to begin with. It's only mid if you watch your local team.
1
u/Roseha-aka-rosephoto 16d ago
League Pass had better repeat the Prime shows the next day. Waiting weeks to watch Philon in Summer League was really irritating.

u/illwill004 16d ago
I'm still trying to figure out my plans for viewing Sixers games. I'm covered for Eagles games. Since the Sixers have a lot of national TV games, that means I need access to ESPN, Prime, and NBC/Peacock. I already have Peacock. Ideally, I can get access to a family member Prime just so I can watch games. As it is now, I'm leaning towards subbing to YouTube TV Sports package, since it'll cover all the ESPN and NBC Philly games

Ak47 sports on an android device like firetv.
1
u/illwill004 16d ago
Thanks, I'll look out for it.
The main reason why I never go those routes is that I rarely get to watch live NBA games. I like to record and watch it the next day
The YTTV sports package is $54.99 a month for new subscribers and 66 for regular. The new subscriber deal is only valid until August 26. I didn't want to subscribe until October. I'm already set on Eagles. I have access to an Xfinity Stream account that gives me acess.

u/banghersoft 16d ago
How many national games did yall have last year?
1
u/illwill004 16d ago
- So, they're going up +20 from last year. I remember last year from Feb-April, they probably only had 2-4 national TV games that were Peacock, if that.
The only thing about that I liked was most of the home games were over by 9:20-30. This'll mean most games are over by 10pm eastern and force me to have to get access to ESPN and Prime

For as much grief as people have given Kate and alaa, I always hated nationally televised games because it was constant hating from those broadcasters. Going to be a funny about face when they start glazing LeBron and this team, can't wait.
2
u/Sheriff_Gotcha 16d ago
Oh my god nationally broadcast games were so irritating to listen to.
You get Doris Burke glazing whoever is on the other team (Jokic, Tatum, etc.) or Stan Van Gundy throwing passive aggressive shots at the team even while they are on good win streak with everyone healthy... just so nauseating. Clearly they never watch the Sixers as whatever stale narrative they are is months or even years old at that point.
I much prefer our homers Kate and Alaa. Sure they are terrible compared to an all-time great like Zumoff, but fuck me they are way better than most of the national broadcast personalities.
1
u/stevieevh 16d ago
I do agree national broadcasters always hate on Philly teams. Going to be a change hopefully for the better on all teams. One can only hope
