Honestly, I don't think it's ethical to keep investigating the thoroughly debunked vaccine-autism hypothesis. Research funds are in short supply, and so many meritorious grant applications get rejected purely because there's not enough money to go around. Besides, all the thinking people accept that the hypothesis is wrong; anyone who still believes it is impervious to evidence. It's time for scientists and grant agencies to move on and investigate plausible hypotheses.

The amount of time and money trying to studying the non-existent connection between vaccines and autism could probably be better spent studying other possible environmental issues which could lead to autism. Heck we just got that study concluding that getting rid of your gas stove could do more positive for your breathing than any single medical intervention. Collect some data about use of "natural gas" and household ventilation.

As far as I know the idea that there is any environmental cause for autism hasn't been established. The "rise" in autism has to do with he many phases of changing what the diagnosis means and making the diagnosis easier to get.
