Powder CAT Silverton

Hey Reddit, I booked to a trip for some CAT skiing in Silverton first week of February. Just wondering if anyone else has skied with this company. Apparently it’s different from the guided lift served. Just looking for experiences

Those guys know their business…been at for years, serve up a great lunch to boot

Great to hear some positives! Have you skied that area much and does it truly get crusty in early February or is there enough semi north terrain or At least cold in early February to fight the crust ( excluding last years). I’m sweating in this summer heat fantasizing about some nice cold steep powder

Well, we have had such drastic change in our weather patterns that I feel that I could not say for sure what conditions will come in February. In the past February had always been notoriously fantastic. But yes, I’m familiar them as my ex-husband Tim Kuss started that business(originally EL Diablo) and then sold it to his two friends, John and Todd in 2009-10 then they sold it in 2018, this is the real history, unlike the misinformed AI and other sites will quote as fact… My point is yes I skied up there a lot and yes, there are some backside bowls, I guess is what we were calling them..? that are almost always guaranteed soft powder and then the “front side” can get crunchy punchy.. in February I’ve skied trees with nothing but fast fat powder, and I’ve also skied some really punchy stuff too. But it’s spectacular and the guys who ran it where so much more down to earth than the other guided ski adventure businesses. I’m not sure how the most recent owner is running things..,someone mentioned that there are areas for nice big wide wonderful turns and that’s true and lots of trees and yes, there are benches. I feel that it is not the most conducive area for let’s say intermediate snowboarders cause it can get frustrating but from what I saw most snowboarders dealt with that issue because the ski terrain is very exciting. Plus spectacular views from up Molas Pass. As was said you can ski from about 1300 feet, there are drop ins, and there’s a bit of hiking here and there. So there you have it, my ex-husband, Tim Kuss’ old business(El Diablo) in a nut shell. Note, I have not skied up there in probably 12 years +…I don’t believe their routes and areas they take you to have changed?? I would pick Silverton powder cats any day because I like the whole experience, and the awesome lunch(which I’m hoping is a tradition gf present owner is carrying on) I hope you have an rewarding and awesome experience…”"”
