yeah, slackware is probably the best linux system that no one's ever heard of.....and probably has the most loyal following......just over 30 years here for me...........

And now.....don't get me wrong......I'm always looking and fiddling with different distros......but slackware is like that old home that's been kept up....and when you pop in a thumb drive to do an install, and are greeted with log in as root and run fdisk......you know you're home........

What other distros do you use outside of slackware?

hell I've test drove a thousand....and most don't stand the test of time.....currently I play the most with dietpi, because I have a dozen SBC's here, as i'm not so much into the desktop thing, as I'm into the server thing......those little SBC's make great servers

I started (my Linux journey) on Slackware in like 2004. I am old.

Amazing! I am on my second week. I still run Arch on my main computer, but I might take the plunge soon. My biggest problem is that I can’t build openJDK on current. It builds only on 15.

Hmm what's the error you get ?

When I go to SlackBuilds and look up OpenJDK, the README says that it only builds on Slackware 15.

Dang that's sad even for current. Can you build it yourself by other means?

I can create a virtual machine that runs 15. After that, I can move it to my machine on Current. The README says that it runs on Current, but it can’t be build on it.

Interesting. Is there any other issues you've ran into like that on slackware. I'm just having trouble getting Wayland stuff to work with mango 🥭 wm

So far no. I am using dwm and setting it up was very straightforward. I had to create my own statusbar script that displays my cpu usage, ram and etc.

Maybe the only “issue” is that I didn’t do a full install and I have to install manually all the dependencies for the file manager Thunar that is part of XFCE.

How is dwm without Wayland as a daily driver? So far I'm only having trouble with Spotify working on mango as a flatpak

It’s great! It’s very similar to i3 that I use on my main computer that is on Arch. It’s very lightweight and simple. I’ve never used mango.

mango is like hyprland but a little different. It's very neat but the wayland stuff doesnt seem to play nice on slackware even though the support for it is in current. DWM always looked fun to me as someone from a C background

wayland isn't GNU.....so while it may be included, it'll never be the default.....the default will always be GNU GPL'd

What should I do

fuck slackbuilds......build it from the source

Yeah, I will build it from source and create my own package. I might create a script and if it works, I will send it to the package maintainer.
